Company plans $800 million LNG plant at Port Fourchon
GALLIANO, La. (AP) — Officials are planning an $800 million liquefied natural gas plant and export terminal at Port Fourchon. The Greater Lafourche Port Commission and one of the port’s tenants, Energy World USA, announced the proposed development Tuesday in a news release. Energy World USA’s proposed facility will eventually produce up to 2 million tons of LNG per year for export, as well as operate a separate smaller scale liquefaction plant geared towards providing LNG to fuel the next generation of Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) powered by LNG and operating in the Gulf of Mexico. “While it is still very early in the planning and regulatory process, we are excited to be able to tell the community and our tenants about this potential opportunity to continue to keep Port Fourchon at

Blake Forsythe started a new job bright and early on Thursday morning. It’s a position that both he and his bosses hope that he has for a long, long Blake Forsythe time. S.L. Football Coach The Tarpons named Forsythe their head football coach this week, ending a month-long search to find a replacement for Brandon Nowlin, who was dismissed after 2016 – his only season with the team. Forsythe, 26, was the offensive coordinator at H.L. Bourgeois this past season, helping to guide the team to the Class 5A State Playoffs, despite facing one of the most challenging districts in the state. The new coach was picked out of the pool of nine candidates who applied for the job. He started his position on Thursday, calling the job a dream come true for both he and his family.

The announcement comes as the Houma-Thibodaux area continues to reel from an oil bust that has stripped an estimated 12,000 jobs from the local economy since mid-2014. The facility would be constructed on a site of up to 150 acres located on portowned property to the west of Belle Pass, which is located outside of the existing port development. South Lafourche Bank Mourns Loss of Board Chairman Joseph Leonard, III LAROSE – For more than three decades, Joseph P. Leonard, III, was a leader and source of inspiration for the board of directors, officers, stockholders and employees of South Lafourche Bank, now known as SL Bank. Mr. Joe, as he was affectionately known, was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of SL Bank on September 16, 1985. As a member of the board, he was always willing to help out, and his diverse background was an asset to our organization. He was elected to serve as Chairman of the board of directors from 1994 until 1998. Then upon the untimely passing of Nacis J. Theriot, the former chairman of the board, Mr. Joe was once again called upon by his fellow board members to serve as Chairman of the board of directors, a position he held from May 2012 until his untimely death in December, 2016. Those who knew Mr. Joe, including his fellow board members, officers and employees of the bank, would like to take this opportunity to share his legacy. Mr. Joe, born in November 1940, was originally from Golden Meadow but resided in Larose for the past 45 years. Early in his career, he worked as a deckhand, roustabout, roughneck, and dispatcher. It was those experiences that helped shape him professionally, as he later became a Personnel Manager with Danos & Curole. In 1977, he and his wife, Becky, founded Cajun Trucking, Inc., a company they ran together until they decided it was time to semi-retire. Upon the sale of Cajun Trucking, Inc., Grand Isle Shipyard, Inc., asked him to remain on as a consultant and in addition, he served as a consultant to the super port, LOOP, LLC. SL Bank President/CEO Sharon St. Pierre, stated that during his tenure as chairman, “SL Bank enjoyed growth of more than 55%, a significant rise by any measure.” “Mr. Joe was a beloved man, a great mentor and an advocate for our community.” In addition to his Chairman duties, he was elected to the Lafourche
Parish Police Jury, served as a member of the South Lafourche Levee District and was a commissioner for Lady of the Sea General Hospital. He was also a founding member of the LA 1 coalition and served on numerous other boards and commissions. Board Secretary, George J. Ledet, Jr., said “Mr. Joe always referred to me as “Tee Boy”. I know that he was a man well respected in our community, by people he touched daily, by the employees and officers of SL Bank and by our board members. Mr. Joe was always there to provide guidance, not just to me, but to all of us, always there to listen and most of all was most generous with his time. As a man, as a friend, he will be missed.” Our loss is nothing compared to that of his family. Mr. Joe was married to Rebecca Nicol Leonard for 53 wonderful years. Together they have two sons, Kirk Leonard (Lillie) and Joshua Leonard; he has two granddaughters, Taylor Leonard and Renee’ Leonard Bruce (Brandon) and one great granddaughter, Addison Bruce. We all know that Mr. Joe was proud of his contribution to our community, we know that he was proud of his accomplishments with SL Bank, but we know that Mr. Joe was most proud of his family, a family he loved and cared for. He leaves a wonderful legacy behind and his family is his greatest legacy, by far. As an organization, we, the board of directors, officers and employees of SL Bank will miss Mr. Joe and are so honored and privileged to have had him as a leader and member of our family. A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrrgerrr Kiiing.”

Council From 1-A
“Don Matherne served 25 years in the military and finished as a Major. He couldn’t work for Lafourche Parish for six months? Mr. Cantrelle could not properly answer one question at the budget meeting last year. Were hitting rock bottom and we keep digging. We are trying to move ahead but we keep having to drag this administration along,” said Melvin. Armand Autin said he recently received 24 calls regarding a pumper not manning his pumps. The pumper was found to be on his shrimp boat instead of at work. He was subsequently fired, but Autin says Cantrelle then hired him back. Jerry Lafont stated he has a recorded conversation of a local contractor who says Cantrelle asked the contractor to get Lafont to “negotiate a contract” with the parish so he could be arrested. Lorraine wanted to amend the resolution to state that the president and the council were equally to blame for the question of “no confidence”, but his amendment failed with only Bourgeois and Lorraine voting yes. On the “No Confidence” resolution, six voted in favor with Lorraine against, and Bourgeois and Michael Gros abstaining. The last resolution of the night was a request to District Attorney Cam Morvant to give his opinion on whether Cantrelle’s latest moves are in line with the language of the Home Rule Charter. During discussion of this measure, it was admitted by Lafont and other members that Cantrelle has already hired former Finance Director Tommy Lasseigne as the Interim Administrator and Paul Robichaux as Interim Director of Community Services. In a letter dated February 2 and read at Thursday’s meeting, Morvant advised Cantrelle that pending further investigation his appointments may be improper. Lafont read the letter into public record. Morvant stated that Cantrelle should be “cognizant of the possibility that pending the issuance of the requested opinion, any actions taken by you with regards to appointing an interim administrator
and an interim department head, and any actions taken by these appointments may be null and void. Furthermore, you and the interim appointments may have legal ramifications.” At Thursday’s meeting, neither Cantrelle nor any of his administration was present.
Coach From 1-A
Prior to the job at H.L. Bourgeois, Forsythe also spent time as a coach at E.D. White. As a player, Forsythe was a standout lineman at St. Charles Catholic – a multi-year contributor for longtime Comets coach Frank Monica. “I’m very excited for this opportunity at South Lafourche,” Forsythe said. “It is a great community with a blue collar mentality that loves their football.” For Forsythe, the objective is clear: bring stability to a Tarpons program that’s been in rough waters for the past several years. Forsythe is the third head coach the Tarpons will have employed in three seasons – a rare spat of instability for a program that had just four head coaches from 1966-2003. A LaPlace native, Forsythe graduated from St. Charles Catholic, then attended college at Nicholls State University. During his time in college, he immediately dove into coaching, starting his career with E.D. White, where he learned under Kyle Lasseigne and the rest of the Cardinals staff. He then went to the Braves in 2015 and called plays for an offense that became prolific on his watch. Forsythe utilizes a lot of shotgun formations, but he incorporates power runs and veer principles in a lot of his packages, despite the spread-out look. With the Braves, Forsythe helped groom quarterback Jude LeCompte, who was one of the top athletes in the entire state in the past season – a player that routinely rushed for 100 yards or more on Friday nights. H.L. Bourgeois scored 40 or more points in three games in 2016, including a thrilling comeback victory over Central Lafourche. With the Tarpons, Forsythe can likely replicate that feat. The Tarpons were just 3-7 last season, but they heavily battled the injury bug throughout the year,
which significantly altered the team’s results. Offensively, the Tarpons return several starters, including halfback Corbin Allen, lineman Chad Cheramie Jr. and split end Brock Bailleaux, who is expected to change positions and move to quarterback. Defensively, South Lafourche brings back guys like Terry Hunter and Jeremy Rogers, both of whom will contend for District MVP honors. Principal Gaye Cheramie said she’s excited to see how Forsythe utilizes the talent the team has in its locker room, touting that the new coach’s ability to get the most out of players was one of the main factors that prompted the hire. “(He) brings with him an enthusiasm and love for the game,” Cheramie said in an emailed statement. “Coach Forsythe is a welcome addition to the South Lafourche family.” Forsythe has already started his job in Galliano, and he will be teaching health courses, in addition to his football duties. Forsythe will immediately take over the Tarpons offseason program, before leading the team into spring football practices later in the school year.

The EWI group is engaged in the business of developing, constructing and operating in property investment, infrastructure, power generation and energy related projects. EWI has a controlling interest
in the Australian public company Energy World Corporation (EWC). “The Energy World family of companies has over 20 years’ experience in the safe production, storage, transportation and delivery of LNG to its customers in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and we are looking forward to bringing this expertise to Port Fourchon,” said Kevin Blount, President of Energy World USA. The proposed facility could represent an investment of upwards of $800 million, making it the largest single initial investment in the history of both Port Fourchon and Lafourche Parish. Job estimates and a project timeline have not been finalized, but Chiasson estimated a few hundred construction jobs would be created, as well as a few dozen permanent jobs once the project is completed.
Lee From 1-A
Two adults gathered five children into a bedroom to attempt to protect them from Lee who retrieved a .22-caliber rifle and fired three rounds. Deputies recovered the rifle and spent casings from inside the residence. Lee was arrested and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with seven counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder and three counts of Aggravated Assault. His bond is set at $170,000.

According to the recent State of Tobacco Control 2017 Report from the American Lung Association, the State of Louisiana received a failing grade (“F”) across several categories when it comes to helping Louisiana smokers. 12-year-old boy arrested in Arkansas clerk’s fatal shooting
FOUKE, Ark. (AP) — A 12year-old boy arrested in the fatal shooting of a convenience-store clerk in south Arkansas is facing a capital murder charge, a prosecutor said. A newspaper carrier found the clerk unresponsive early Thursday at a gas station in Fouke, about 140 miles southwest of Little Rock and near the state’s borders with Texas and Louisiana. The Miller County Sheriff’s Office said the clerk, identified as 21year-old Christa Shockley, was pronounced dead a short time later. The boy was arrested later Thursday and police recovered the gun they believe used in the shooting. The boy is being held in a juvenile detention center on preliminary charges of capital murder and aggravated robbery. Generally speaking, a juvenile can be held until his or her 21st birthday. In some cases, such as capital murder, a judge can decide whether release is then appropriate or if the individual should serve time in an adult prison.

PRAYERS
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going to battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves shall never die a sudden death or be drowned or shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail so be sure you really want what you ask. AMEN ________________________

LSU’s Orgeron lands a highly Crime Stoppers tip leads to drug bust in Galliano A n multiple charges after sevWhen deputies arrived rated maiden recruiting class anonymous
Sunday, February 5, 2017 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
By BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU coach Ed Orgeron’s maiden signing class with the Tigers reflected his reputation as a strong recruiter — even if the Louisiana native acknowledged he wasn’t pleased by some near misses in his home state. “Obviously, we lost some guys at the end we’re very disappointed in, but we feel like we have a great recruiting class,” said Orgeron, who took over on an interim basis when Les Miles was fired four games into last season. Orgeron was hired on a permanent basis two days after a victory at Texas A&M in LSU’s regular-season finale. Among major recruiting analysts, LSU’s class ranked in the top 10 nationally — no small feat for a coach who spent the entire regular season fending off negative recruiting by competing programs. LSU’s 2017 class was highlighted by defensive standouts at safety, linebacker, defensive end and offensive line. Orgeron also locked up a pair of promising quarterbacks, hoping to strengthen what has been a position of weakness for LSU the past three seasons. But three top Louisiana prospects that LSU pursued hard — receiver DeVonta Smith of Amite, defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis of Monroe and linebacker Chris Allen of Baton Rouge — not only all left the state, but all went to rival Alabama, which LSU has not defeated since the 2011 regular season. Additionally,
only eight of 23 signees were Louisiana natives. “Obviously we have work to do and (Louisiana is) always going to be our primary area,” Orgeron said. Other things to know: Top 25 Class: Yes. Best in class: DB JaCoby Stevens of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. At 6-2, 200 pounds, Stevens demonstrated play-making ability on balls in the air and was a strong tackler against the run. Best of the rest: Jacob Phillips, LB, Nashville, Tennessee; Tyler Shelvin, DT, Lafayette, Louisiana; Austin Deculus, OL, Cypress, Texas. Citing Phillips, Orgeron asserted, “We got the best middle linebacker in the country.” That will be important with Kendell Beckwith heading to the NFL. Late addition: DE K’Lavon Chaisson of Houston, Texas, chose the Tigers over Texas. One that got away: Marvin Wilson, DT, Houston, Texas. The top-rated defensive tackle in the nation chose Florida State. How they’ll fit in: Linebackers will come in and play immediately, particularly Phillips because of a lack of depth. Chaisson gives them a successor to Arden Key, widely projected as a 2018 NFL first-round draft choice. Quarterbacks Lowell Narcisse of St. James, Louisiana, and Myles Brennan of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, will give new offensive coordinator Matt Canada options to choose from and push returning starter Danny Etling. ___
Nicholls fills needs in 2017 recruiting class
THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University head football coach Tim Rebowe released the names of the 2017 recruiting class on Wednesday afternoon at the Colonels’ Signing Day Press Conference presented by Rotolo’s at the Harold J. Callais Memorial Recreation Center. Rebowe, in his third season at the helm of the Colonel program, revealed the 12-member class, which included three midyear signees and nine local Louisiana high school recruits. While Rebowe has continued to bring in student-athletes from the region, he specifically targeted New Orleans as five recruits came from the greater New Orleans area. The mid-year signees

include two linemen – one offense and one defense – and a kicker. Joining Nicholls next season from the junior college ranks are - Bradston Burnside (Hattiesburg, Miss./Hattiesburg/East Central CC), Lorran Fonseca (Hercules, Calif./Hercules/Contra Costa CC) and Demetrius Gleaton (Pope, Miss./South Panola/East Mississippi CC). With the large recruiting classes from 2015 and 2016, the program was limited in numbers for this year’s group. Headlining the signees are all-state honorees Dontaze Costly (St. James/St. James), Dai’Jean Dixon (New Orleans/Edna Karr) and Danquan Edwards (New Orleans/De La Salle). The rest of the group – Hunter Bell (Chalmette/Chalmette), Kohen Granier (Destrehan/Destrehan), Grid Isidore, Jr. (Slidell/Salmen), David Mosley (Metairie/Archbishop Rummel), Everett Rodrigue (Houma/Terrebonne) and Zach Trahan (Houma/Vandebilt Catholic) – received several accolades including all-district and all-region. The Colonels will begin spring practice on Friday, March 17, and their annual Spring Game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11. What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Jesus commissioned his followers to “make disciples of all nations”
I recently attended a four-day-Convocation for priests in the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese. We looked at our goals and objectives for the next five years. One handout we received was entitled “Nine Dimensions of a Fully Mature Missionary Disciple.” When Jesus was leaving this earth, he commissioned his followers, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:18-20). The following nine characteristics are found in a mature disciple of Christ. 1) RELATIONSHIP: I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that has changed by life and serves as my rudder. Relationships are at the heart of our spiritual life. If we don’t have a personal relationship with the Lord, we need to spend more time in prayer so we can develop an intimate kinship with our creator and redeemer. This will give us a purpose in life. 2) CONVERSION: I have allowed Jesus to reshape my lifestyle. I no longer live in a me-centered world. I live in a Christ-centered world. I try to get in touch with those things in my life that are not of God and replace them with things that are pleasing to God. I realize that conversion is a daily lifelong task. 3) GROUNDED: I firmly ground my personal experience of God in the Bible’s objective truth and the teachings of the church. This means I take time to read spiritual writings regularly. 4) DISCERNING: I am docile to the Holy Spirit and I want God’s will in my life. I discern daily what God wants me to do in life. I long to stay in relationship and in communion with God. “Heavenly Father, lead me, guide along my way.” 5) HOLINESS: I am committed to a lifestyle of holiness, prayer and virtue. I will daily practice the virtues of Faith, Hope, Love, Chastity, Patience, Kindness, Humility, Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice. I am also committed to serve the needs of others and be responsible for the care of God’s creation. 6) WORSHIP: I am committed to worship God every week because the Almighty has been so good to me for sending his Only Begotten Son into the world to teach us how to live. Jesus also died for us so we can be free. I am committed to become a true worshiper in spirit and in truth and not just a spectator. I understand what goes on at Mass or a worship service. 7) COMMUNITY: I need people in my life who want my holiness as much as I do. Others know me and they hold me accountable to my commitments to Christ, the Church and my vocation in life. I find rest, peace and strength in those I associate with, and I try to give them peace, strength and encouragement. 8) OTHER PEOPLE: God loves people and so do I. I see others as human beings, not as categories or objects. I follow Jesus’ directive. “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved
you, you must also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). St. Paul echoes that when he says, “The entire Law is fulfilled in a single decree: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself” (Gal. 5:14) 9) EVANGELIZATION: I long for others to know Christ. I know my testimony about how Jesus has touched my life and I share it with others. I believe that evangelization is talking about someone, not something. These nine characteristics can be an examination of conscience for where you are and where we have to go in the spiritual life.
