South Lafourche Airport debuts new logo, brand
(GALLIANO, LA) – The Greater Lafourche Port Commission has launched a new logo and brand identity for its South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport, complete with a new entryway sign visible from Highway 308 at the front of Airport Road in Galliano. The new logo and branding are designed to give greater prominence to the Port Commission’s airport, which is the fastestgrowing airport in the state of Louisiana, and its surrounding industrial park. “We really wanted to highlight the growth taking place at the airport by coming up with a logo and a brand identity which clearly belongs in the Port Fourchon family but stands on its own. The South Lafourche Airport is a critical link in the transportation chain for Port Fourchon and beyond, and we feel that the new logo shows that very well,” said Chett Chiasson, Executive Director of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission. The airport logo, created by the W.L. Gaiennie Company, prominently features the South Lafourche Airport’s identifier code, GAO, as well as a stylized arrow streaking above it See Airport Page 5-A

The Lockport Kaycee Ladies Auxillary held their annual garage sale this past weekend at the K.C. Home. Pictured are Cadan Williams and Chance Breaux checking out the goodies at the sale. The Town of Lockport will also host the annual Main Street Market this Saturday at the Bayouside Park from 9 to 4. A variety of items will be available for purchase such as clothing, jewelry, pottery, lawn ornaments, purses, wood crafts, plants, etc. A large food court will also offer a generous menu of food and drinks. This year, the La-Terre Master Gardeners, a volunteer organization under the direction of the LSU AgCenter, will be on hand to share their knowledge on gardening, and will include guest speakers, educational displays and a plant sale. The event is free and open to the public.
BUSINESS Spotlight
Fourchon Transportation Services offers Port workers an option
Port Fourchon is home to approximately 250 companies, with an average of 4500 employees working between day and night shifts, seven days a week. Approximately 15,000 people per month are flown to offshore locations supported by Port Fourchon. So where do all of those workers park? Companies at Port Fourchon are utilizing valuable working space within their facilities
The brave men and women of Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 are presenting a brand new fire station dedicated to protecting residents. The grand opening of the new station will be Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The state-of-the-art station is located at 17475 Hwy. 3235 in Galliano, two miles south of Walmart. The free event is open to the public and will offer finger-foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, and gratons as well as plastic firefighter helmets for the kids. More importantly, the public will have a chance to tour the station, as well as the station’s two new fire trucks, and see where the parish’s dedicated firefighters work and sleep. The ribbon cutting and station blessing will be held at 1 p.m. “I like showing people that they have 24-hour fire protection because a lot of people don’t know that. Come tour the station and see what you’re paying for. Taxpayer funding is not going to waste,” said Fire Prevention Officer Jada Pitre. For this grand opening Fire Chief Freddy Guidry wants to do something a little different than traditional openings. Instead of cutting a ribbon with a pair of scissors they plan to cut fireline tape with a firefighter’s axe. The new fire station has been a $1.8 million investment. See Fire Station Page 6-A
to accommodate vehicle parking, both for their own workers and those parking to travel offshore. In 2012, Dwayne Rebstock realized the need for a transportation system that could carry workers to and from Port Fourchon and free up much needed space for business growth. He developed Fourchon Transportation Services, LLC (FTS) with the goal of providing affordable crew transportation via 15 passenger vans to and from the Port to many locations along the Gulf Coast Region. Aside from having workers vying for prime parking space, especially on rainy or scorching See FTS Page 6-A The Wallace Center, 3603 Hwy. 308 in Raceland, hosted a free Youth Art Day this past weekend with 19 attending. Pictured with special project co-coordinator Heather Benoit is A’terriyona (Dora) Lawson, painting a sun and Lauren Joseph, showing off her painted flower.

About 35 children per day attend the program thus far.
Anyone interested in getting involved in this or any other program at the center is asked to email Benoit at benoithe@lafourchegov.org or visit Facebook at facebook.com/beyondthebellraceland for more information. The next Saturday event scheduled to take place at the Wallace Center is a Community Health and Wellness Day on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from Blue Cliff College in Houma will be conducting wellness exams and performing physicals, glucose, diabetes and blood pressure tests. “In a Small Pond” By Leroy Martin
World War II -
In 1942 my Dad, Roosevelt Martin, was driving his Texaco truck, loaded with 55-gallon drums of gasoline and oil to the Bayou Rigaud dock in Grand Isle. I was riding shotgun … literally! Because of his valuable cargo, he had been advised to bring a weapon. He found an old, rusted double barrel shotgun, not loaded, which could not have been fired even if it had been, and laid it on the seat between us. I felt like Gabby Hayes next to Roy Rogers in a movie, Dad Gum it! As we arrived in Cheniere, a barricade and two armed guards stopped us and demanded credentials. We encounted another one at the foot of the Caminada Bridge. After clearing those, I
★
saw more soldiers, a military vehicle, a navy blimp flying high overhead and Jeeps patrolling the beach. It was quiet an experience for a 12-year old kid. This was not cowboys and Indians nor cops and robbers … this was the real thing! Dad had been there before, but had been warned that anything he saw was top secret, and he did not want to upset my mother. We finally reached the dock and reported to the dock master, an old friend. The truck was unloaded under armed guards. His friend handed Dad a pair of binoculars and said, “Look west, Roosevelt.” Dad looked and then handed them to me. I saw black smoke, which we had been smelling, and we heard explosions coming

from the ship’s direction. “That’s ammunition or gas drums going off,” he explained. “It’s been burning for 3 days and it’s the fourth one this month. A sailor told me that one of their planes had spotted a U-boat and shot at it and might have sunk it.” The Atlantic and the Pacific oceans might have prevented an invasion. But Roosevelt Martin and son now knew that America HAD been invaded by submarines, from our own Gulf of Mexico. In recent years we learned from research by Mr. Charles Christ of Houma that from 1942 to 1943 a fleet of over 20 German U-Boats operated in the Gulf and sunk over 56 oil tankers from Texas and Louisiana refineries. A Nazi U-Boat, the U-
166 had been sunk on July 30, 1942, by the Coast Guard PC-566. It remains there today, buried with its crew of 42, a rare victory early in the war. “Don’t tell your Mother or anybody else any of this or we could go to jail,” Dad said. I obeyed, and I never shared the whole story with anyone … until today. Another story about the war happened to my good friend, the late Dick Guidry. By this time, I was living in New Orleans but Dick related it to me many years later and in a recent interview told the press who printed it. Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cut Off had a German priest who spoke favorably about the Nazi regime from the pulpit, and was believed to have a short wave radio to spy for them.
Mathews, LA – The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter (LPAS) in Thibodaux experienced another successful Saturday opening with five cats and dogs finding their forever homes, according to shelter manager Hilary Knight. When combined with the adoptions from the Saturday opening in February, LPAS has adopted out eight animals with even more going to rescue groups. Additionally, eight people have signed-up for Lafourche Parish’s Spay/Neuter Program thanks to the Saturday openings held in February and March. Knight said these openings wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the efforts of
community volunteers. “The volunteers put up an awesome play area in the front of the shelter that will be used as a doggie meet and great area. We hope that next month will be even more successful,” she said. The next Saturday opening is scheduled for April 4. On this day, the shelter will be once again be open from 8 a.m. to noon for adoptions as well as spay and neuter signups. To volunteer and learn more about LPAS, call (985) 446-3532, visit facebook.com/LafourcheParishAnimalShelter or click on the Animal Shelter link at lafourchegov.org.
From left: Oil tanker burning in the Gulf as seen from Grand Isle, and the U-Boat 166 fleet flag.
It had gotten to a point where a crowd gathered at the church demanding his resignation. He appeared to be in danger, and Dick, then 14 and an altar boy, was driving his parents’ coupe (before driving age) and drove to the back of the rectory, smuggled the priest into the trunk and drove off, thereby possibly saving his life. I remember that coupe. It had a very small, cramped back seat where a few years after the war Dick and I sat when attending LSU football games with his parents, John L. and Lillian Guidry. His brother Bobby was a student there. Dick’s
brother Lloyd and sister Rosie Harris completed the family. Mr. Guidry was a community leader and today Nicholls State University’s John L. Guidry Stadium is named in his honor. After a new priest took over tempers cooled and things returned to normal. This event had been unusual for the God fearing and gentle Cajuns but this was war, our soldiers were dying, and America was united as never before in a just cause. Next week, World War II, part 3. BYE NOW!

through blocks in original port logo colors. The Port Fourchon logo is at the start of the new airport logo, representing the airport’s beginnings under GLPC as a service point for port users. “The logo was designed to give you a definite sense that this airport is taking off and is able to serve as an extension of Port Fourchon into the aviation business, supporting our tenants across the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico, added Joe Wheeler, Airport Manager. Since GLPC acquired the South Lafourche Airport in 2001, flight operations have increased from 550 in 2001 to 23,879 in 2014. They are set to double once Chevron’s $30 million Gulf of Mexico Aviation Logistics Center is completely operational by 2016.
The GAO airport complex also includes a 1,200 acre industrial park, which is the site of several airport upgrades in the works including a new terminal building, hangars, runway strengthening, and a connector road linking the airport and industrial park to LA 3235, enhancing its connection to Port Fourchon and continuing to improve intermodal transportation and commerce in the region. “The Port Commission takes its mission to foster economic development for the good of the community very seriously, and the incredible growth at the South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr., Airport is a great example of that commitment to our mission. We hope that people in the community and in the industry see this new logo as a symbol of that growth and possibility, said Port Commission President Perry Gisclair.

BRIEF
The bull market for stocks is 6 years old
NEW YORK (AP) — In 2009 the stock market was filled with panic. The housing market had collapsed. Lehman Brothers had gone under and General Motors was on the verge of bankruptcy reorganization. The U.S. was in a deep recession, and stocks had plunged 57 percent from their high in October 2007. Fast forward six years, and investors are enjoying one of the longest bull markets since the 1940s. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index has more than tripled since bottoming out at 676.53 on March 9, 2009. The bull has pushed through a U.S. debt crisis, an escalating conflict in the Middle East, renewed tensions with Russia over Ukraine and Europe’s stagnating economy. So has this bull run its course? Most market strategists haven’t yet seen the signs that typically accompany a market peak. Investors are yet to become rash, or overconfident. ___
Deadly World War II firebombings of Tokyo and other Japanese cities largely ignored
TOKYO (AP) — It was not Hiroshima or Nagasaki, but in many ways, including lives lost, it was just as horrific. On March 10, 1945, U.S. B-29 bombers flew over Tokyo in the dead of night, dumping massive payloads of cluster bombs equipped with a then-recent invention: napalm. A fifth of Tokyo was left a smoldering expanse of charred bodies and rubble. Today, a modest floral monument in a downtown park honors the spirits of the 105,400 confirmed dead, many interred in com-

mon graves. It was the deadliest conventional air raid ever, worse than Nagasaki and on par with Hiroshima. But the attack, and similar ones that followed in more than 60 other Japanese cities, have received little attention, eclipsed by the atomic bombings and Japan’s postwar rush to rebuild. ___
Survey: US gas prices jump 21 cents a gallon in 2 weeks
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of a regular gallon of gas has jumped 21 cents in the past two weeks to $2.54. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the price is still 97 cents per gallon less than a year ago. Los Angeles had the highest-price gas in the lower 48 cities surveyed, at $3.48. California saw prices jump a whopping 57 cents. The low national average was in Baton Rouge at $2.16. The average national price for midgrade gas is $2.74. For premium, it’s $2.90. Diesel stands at $3.02, up eight cents. ___
US oil and natural gas rig count drops by 75
NEW YORK (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. fell by 75 this week to 1,192 amid depressed oil prices. Baker Hughes said Friday 922 rigs were seeking oil and 268 were exploring for natural gas, with two listed as miscellaneous. The count is down from a year ago, when 1,792 rigs were active. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas lost 32 rigs; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania lost seven each; Colorado lost five; North Dakota lost three; Kansas, Louisiana and Utah lost two; and California, Ohio and Wyoming each lost one.

Lafourche official seeks lower speed limit on La. Highway 308
THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — A Lafourche Parish Council member says the parish should ask the state to lower the speed limit on Louisiana Highway 308 from Raceland to Lockport. Councilman John Arnold tells The Daily Comet that some residents who live near the highway believe a lower speed limit will make the highway safer. The current speed limit is 55 miles per hour. Arnold wants the parish council to ask the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to change the speed limit to 45 miles per hour. Highway 308 is one of the two major roads that stretch along Bayou Lafourche. It is a popular route for tractor-trailers and other drivers looking to avoid traffic congestion on Louisiana Highway 1.

Fire Station From 1-A
It is extremely important to the area, especially during hurricane season. Most of the firefighters stay behind, even during the worst storms. The way this new station has been constructed will ensure both the safety of the firefighters and the ability for them to respond at a moment’s notice. “We evacuated for one storm and after that I said never again. We worried about anyone left behind. We hurried back in 40 mph
winds. Now we don’t have to worry about that anymore. We can stay and be safe,” said Fire Chief Guidry. For the purpose of staying during hurricanes, Guidry said that when they were in the planning phase he wanted the station to look like a WWII bunker. The walls are nearly a foot thick of solid concrete, and state-of-the-art emergency response command centers will be located on both the first and second floor. To protect against flooding, the second floor can run completely independent from the first floor

with its own generator. There are no windows on the second floor to make it impervious to the high winds of any hurricane. The firefighters live on the second floor, which has its own kitchen, den, and two separate sleeping quarters with four beds each. At all times there will always be at least six firefighters ready to go along the bayou with at least four at this station and two in Port Fourchon. “We signed up to protect our community, not to bail when it gets bad,” said Pitre. “This fire station will help keep us safe so we can do our best to keep the community in which we live and love safe as well.” Every year in October, during Fire Prevention Month, the Galliano fire station hosts an openhouse event with tours of the station and training grounds. The Fire District also exhibits live action firefighting training for the visitors to see. The grounds offer a massive amount of training from fighting house fires, to rappelling, to vehicle rescue, to dealing with meth labs and much more. The training provided there is some of the best in the country. The Galliano fire station has trained Coast Guard teams in firefighting from all over the country as well as some international units. The fire station also implements a number of programs geared towards fire prevention such as public fire education lead by Pitre. One program they have implemented is giving out and installing free smoke detectors. Presently, Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 is number two in the state for installing smoke detectors, second only to New Orleans. “Our goal is to put ourselves out of business, and the way to do that is to educate the public about preventing fires,” said Guidry. The fire department is also hosting its second an-
nual 5K run on March 28 at the Golden Meadow Park. The proceeds go to Firefighters for Life, a Relay for Life team, and from there go directly to the American Cancer Society. Last year they managed to raise $3,000 to combat cancer. The fire department is always looking for new paid and volunteer firefighters, dispatchers, and anyone who wants to serve their community. “For these courageous men and women, working for the fire department is not a job; it’s a passion. I can’t see myself doing anything else,” said Pitre.

From 1-A
hot days often seen in the area, Fourchon Transportation Services can also help commuters save on fuel and toll tag costs, vehicle wear and tear, overspray, limestone dust and a plethora of other things related to daily travels and parking at the Port. In the 37-mile span from Larose to Fourchon, there have been hundreds of accidents on the road due to rushed, tired and pre-occupied drivers travelling to and from work. “With FTS, workers can sit back, relax and even get in a few more minutes of shut-eye. The busses are equipped with USB plugins for charging electronic devices as well as a 30-inch monitor providing local information to crews,” says Rebstock. On April 1, Fourchon Transportation Services is launching a Port Shuttle Service via a 29-passenger bus for workers. A Park-nRide option is being developed in the Galliano area and a second Park-n-Ride is planned to open in Larose by the end of the year. “The planned transit shuttle route will start with five to six bus stops in the Bayou Region, home to a vast majority of Port workers, as well as the three
major hotel chains and stops at all dock locations at the Port. Busses will operate from 4 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week from Galliano to Fourchon and then from Larose to Fourchon once the second Park-n-Ride opens,” says Rebstock. Workers getting off their shift will be able to jump on the shuttle for their trip home when it stops to let off workers who are going to their shift. The busses will run a loop route at morning crew change from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. and evening crew change from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. In between crew change times one shuttle bus will continue this route while a second bus will return to and remain at Port Fourchon and will run a Port route, which will be a 30-minute looped route that will take the shuttle bus around the Port. This Port loop will allow workers a hop-on / off type of shuttle service that will bring them anywhere they need to go within the Port. “This is a much-needed public service at a very fair price for those living and working in south Lafourche and Port Fourchon,” says
Rebstock. “Port Fourchon is the pulse of our local community and we want to get workers there safely and cost effectively.” For more information on Fourchon Transportation Services, LLC visit www.fourchontransportation.com or call 985-4753309 or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/fourchontransportation.
