Gov. Jindal to decide on 2016 White House run in June
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — G o v . B o b b y Jindal will wait until the state legislative Gov. Bobby Jindal session ends in June before announcing whether he’ll enter the 2016 presidential race. The Republican governor’s chief political adviser, Timmy Teepell, said Monday that Jindal wants to stay focused on the final session of his term before deciding about the White House bid. The legislative session begins April 13. Lawmakers must wrap up their work by June 11. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz launched the first major campaign of the presidential election cycle Monday. Other GOP candidates are expected to follow within weeks. Jindal appears certain to run, making regular appearances in the key campaign state of Iowa and continuing a heavy travel schedule around the country, speaking about federal issues. But his poll numbers lag well behind other expected Republican contenders.

The Ted Gisclair Lock gates, located in Larose, have been returned and are being put in place. The two gates have been in Belle Chasse, undergoing improvements. Centaur Construction, LLC was awarded the $1.38 million project to add 5 feet of height to the gates, then blast and paint them. The gates and lock now have a height of 13 ft. above sea level, the same as the adjoining levees.

Assistant District Attorney Lisa Orgeron, along with D.A. Investigator Billy Bourg, hand out domino key chains to Central Lafourche High School seniors as they exit the auditorium Monday morning. A program, called “The Domino Effect”, was given to parish high school seniors this week in an effort to combat distracted driving and to illustrate the far-reaching consequences of impaired driving.
A judge Saturday declared a mistrial midway through testimony in a second-degree murder case of a Cut Off man, saying prosecutors exerRobert Chouest cised poor judgment in their interactions with witnesses. But the trial of Robert Chouest, 31, of Cut Off, who is charged in the May 22, 2013, shooting death of Shawn Galjour, 41, of Larose, will go on (as of press time Tuesday). According to the Daily Comet, an appellate court has overturned state District Judge John LeBlanc’s ruling decision to declare a mistrial on the grounds that the District Attorney’s Office did not violate a sequestration order. Chouest and his attorney, George Ledet, Jr., of Cut Off, returned to Judge LeBlanc’s courtroom Tuesday for an evidentiary hearing. Chouest is charged with shooting Galjour in the head as the victim lay in a driveway next to Chouest’s home on ABC Lane in Cut Off. LeBlanc ruled on Saturday — midway through Chouest’s trial — that interactions between prosecutors and witnesses were improper. But District Attorney Cam Morvant II filed a writ with the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, which agreed with him on Monday. Ledet said he has filed a writ with the state Supreme Court to its opinion on the mistrial ruling.
Randolph will seek re-election as Parish President
“I am proudly announcing my intention to seek reelection as your Parish President. Lafourche Parish has seen unprecedented economic growth in Charlotte Randolph the almost 12 years that I have been in office. The northern part of our parish has seen a tremendous increase in new subdivision development with hundreds of new homes. Our central area has significant new home development plus over $200 million dollars in new industrial infrastructure. South Lafourche continues to shine with essential billion-dollar oil and gas activity at Port Fourchon, the Leonard Miller Airport and the continued growth around Highway 3235. Businesses and residents are currently paying a lower overall tax rate for parish services than when I took office. Yet the number of projects has increased tenfold. Over $100 million has been invested on parish streets, pump stations, and drainage, with local taxes and with external funding from state and federal sources. New bridges cross Bayou Lafourche in Larose, Gheens and Thibodaux, thanks to our work with area legislators. We’re currently working with the state and the port commission for an industrial airport corridor in Galliano. See Randolph Page 6-A

“World War II Epilogue
By 1945 the Allies were prevailing. In the Pacific our troops had captured Iwo Jima and Okinawa, but at a horrible price paid for by some of our local boys. In Europe the Germans had lost their last offensive, The Battle of the Bulge. My brother-in-law Parrison Guidry survived that one. He was drafted at 18, went through basic training, shipped overseas, shot on D-Day, recovered, re-assigned to Patton’s Third Army, got frostbit at Bastogne, recovered, was informed his original squad was wiped out, then honorably discharged. His death, years later, was caused by recurring battle-related injuries. In Europe, General Patton was rolling in from the
west and the Russians were roaring in from the east. Hitler’s demise was eminent, but many Cajuns were yet to die. In the USA came a major shock! On April 12, 1945, President Roosevelt died of a heart attack at age 63. Harry Truman became President and Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945 (V.E. Day). America dropped the Atom bombs on August 6th and 9th and Japan surrendered on August 14th. (V.J. Day). help, friends and enemies alike, and as usual, well, you know the rest. During the war, a black market existed locally. Unpatriotic citizens sold rationed commodities, hurting the war effort. Automobiles had not been manufactured since 1942, but gasoline, tires, shoes, meat, coffee, and practically anything desirable was in short supply. Ration stamps were issued proportionality but were not required for the black market, just money. Shamefully, some locals helped these malefactors by buying their goods, supplied by crooked manufacturers. Even in war, money ruled. Some compared it to bootlegging during prohibition. NOT! Purchasing illegal liquor was tolerated, even condoned because: (1.) The Volstead act was hated and repealed in 1932. (2.) Cajuns enjoyed beer and liquor and some were actually in the business, even relatives. (3.) Illegal liquor was transported by boats, and where were most boats located with outlets to the Gulf and the three-mile limit? (4.) How else could our priest obtain wine to perform mass? I don’t know the answers, I just ask the questions! Most citizens were

Most of the time, some kind soul would give us a ride but walking 4 miles to worship reaffirmed our faith. A person mom knew beckoned to her and they talked. Suddenly, in a loud voice unusual for her, Mom started to denounce the person in French, “tois tet un traitor a tont payee.â€? She didn’t know the French word for traitor but it was loud and clear in English. “Tet s’amis et paron après batte et mourier pour tois, traitorâ€?, and other words I didn’t think she even knew. Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. the public is welcomed to shop around the craft booths and watch the cracklin cooks do their work before buying themselves a plate lunch. D’Lynn Boudreaux, executive director of the COYC, who is in charge of setting up the cook-off, says that many of the visitors like to watch the cooks and get tips from them so that they can try it at home. She says the cooks are always happy to share their knowledge to the interested visitors. “They all have their own way of doing it. Some of them say that you have to wait until the grease gets hot enough to light a match. Others say no that’s not how you do it; they all have a different technique,” said Boudreaux. “The people who are out there cooking the cracklins love doing that. It’s a tradition!” The craft show consists

of a large variety of works from local artists such as wooden toys, specialized candles and outdoor decorations like wishing wells and ashtrays. For the cook-off there are usually anywhere between 10-15 contestants cooking their own version on cracklins. There are three anonymous judges for the contest. The winner of the contest will receive a prize, which is usually a new cooking pot or something else that is associated with cooking, such as a new apron or paddle, along with bragging rights. To register as a contestant call the Cut Off Youth Center at 985632-7616. “They all know each other and they’re all trying to beat each other,” said Boudreaux. Another, similar popular event the COYC will be hosting soon will be Boilin’ on the Bayou. On April 18, cooks will take part in another tasty competition – a crawfish boil-off. For $20 attendees can enjoy all you can eat crawfish. The contestants in this particular event are various teams of four, each sponsored by a different company or group of friends. Each team is required to boil at least two sacks of crawfish, however they are often happy to boil more because of the high attendance rate. “Every event we put on at the Youth Center helps to fund the COYC. Our goal is to create programs that benefit the kids in our community,” said Boudreaux.

Since 2005, we’ve had nine straight years of unqualified audits, with an excellent bond rating. This has allowed us to finance new projects and refinance older projects at a much better rate, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. Recreation programs
are offered for all, including Lafourche on the Move for our valued senior citizens. Walking tracks and new and/or improved free boat launches are available from one end of our great parish to the other. Over $250 million in coastal restoration projects are underway to help preserve our great parish for generations to come. Much more can be gained with my long-term relationship with state and federal officials. The parish now has a Comprehensive Master Plan and a Master Drainage Plan, blueprints for the future of Lafourche. With progress, challenges remain, and I am committed to putting forth the time and effort to continuously improve our great parish. The next four years will be very important for Lafourche Parish, with the fluctuations in the price of crude oil and the resulting layoffs, and budget problems in Baton Rouge and Washington, experience will matter. We suggest public forums, inviting all candidates, at community volunteer fire stations throughout the parish, to allow voters to get to know the candidates for this very important office. These events could be informal and informative. I first ran for office in 2003 because, like many people in Lafourche Parish, I was disappointed with the direction of our parish and of our parish government. Since then, Lafourche has moved from a parish in turmoil, no budgets, no administrators, very little work being done, to a parish others look to model. We can look to the past and see how far we’ve come. Please join with me and together we can make Lafourche even greater. The primary is October 24. I ask for your vote and support. There is only one true goal: to do what is right for Lafourche.”

Local event set for Elmer’s Island July 11
With spring just around the corner, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced they will again host a series of Family Fish Fest events across the state.  In its second year, this program provides a unique opportunity for families to learn fishing basics and participate in activities to increase fishing knowledge and skill. The first 50 registrants for each event will receive a complimentary rod and reel, and the first 100 registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag.   Competitive categories are available for nearly all legal fish species, and every participant is automatically entered into a raffle for outdoors prizes courtesy of event sponsors. Entry for each event is $10 per participant (except for the September 26 event), and includes a t-shirt and lunch.  Participants must provide their own fishing equipment and bait.  Events will begin shortly after sunrise and will conclude by noon. The competition portion of each event will include divisions for all ages and fishing categories for multiple
species, with a boat division at locations that have launch access. Live redfish and speckled trout will be tagged and released by LDWF biologists in conjunction with the Louisiana Cooperative Marine Fish Tagging Program at all saltwater locations. Outside of the competitive arena, numerous additional outdoor activities will be available, including a mobile touch tank, fish identification, fish ageing, knot tying, casting tutorials and arts and crafts.  Robbie the Redfish, LDWF’s fish tagging mascot, will be onsite for photo opportunities and to greet guests.
Local athletes to compete in Thibodaux Regional’s All-Star basketball game The fourth annual Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional’s Bayou vs. River All-Star basketball shootout will be played at Thibodaux High School on Saturday, March 28. The evening will kick off with the girl’s all-stars tipping off at 4:30 p.m. followed by the dunk and three-point shooting competition at 6 p.m. followed by the boy’s game

The workshop is scheduled for June 14 through 19, 2015 at LDWF’s Grand Isle Fisheries Research Lab. Irish-American musician and songwriter to play one night only at Bayou Playhouse
St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continue at the Bayou Playhouse when Internationally acclaimed Irish-American singer, storyteller, song writer, musician Danny O’Flaherty performs live in concert on Saturday March 28 at 8 p.m. for a one night only concert. “Danny is an old friend who I’ve had the honor of working on my projects with,” said Bayou Playhouse Artistic Director Perry Martin. “We were thrilled when he was able to add a date for the Playhouse during his current American tour.” The ballad traditions of Ireland have expanded through his efforts. In addition to performing concerts around the globe, Danny has provided an outlet for Irish musicians at his Irish Channel Center in New Orleans. Danny’s songs range from deep and soulful to silly and poetic. His vocal talent knows no bounds as he sings one style of music as beautifully as the next.

High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. “But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?” After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, “Wedding cake?”

Justices to review sentences for young convicts
WASHINGTON (AP) — The
Supreme Court is adding a new case to decide whether its 3-year-old ruling throwing out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles should apply to older cases. The court was scheduled to hear arguments in a case from Louisiana in late
March, but the state released inmate George Toca after 30 years in prison. The justices on Monday said they would consider a new Louisiana case involving a man who has been held since 1963 for killing a sheriff’s deputy in Baton Rouge. Henry Montgomery was a 17-year-old 10th grader who was playing hooky from school when he shot Deputy Charles Hurt at a park near the city’s airport. The officer and his partner were looking to round up truants. The case will be argued in the fall. ___

Consumer tips for using paid tax preparers
Some consumer tips to help avoid excessive fees or potential fraud when using paid tax preparers, according to the Justice Department, Internal Revenue Service and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: — Make sure any tax refund due is sent to you or deposited into your bank account, not deposited into a preparer’s bank account. — Do not use a preparer willing to electronically file your return using your last pay stub rather than a W-2. — Do not use a preparer who fabricates business expenses or claims bogus tax credits you may not be entitled to. — Ask about service fees upfront. Avoid preparers who base fees on a percentage of your refund or say they can get a larger refund for you than others can. — Never sign a blank return. — Report abusive tax preparers to the IRS, using forms 14157 and 14157-A. — Get help with taxes for free, if possible. If your income is $53,000 or less, if you have a disability or are a limited English speaker, you are eligible for free tax preparation services at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance location: http://irs.treasury.gov/free taxprep/ or call 800-906-

Oil markets, strong production lead US gas prices lower
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average national price of a regular gallon of gasoline has dropped 4 cents in the last two weeks to $2.50. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that falling oil prices and strong production at U.S. refineries led to lower numbers at the pump. The drop during the two-week period ended Friday comes despite labor strikes at some refineries. Los Angeles had the most expensive gas among cities surveyed in the Lower 48 states at $3.29. Charleston, South Carolina, had the cheapest at $2.11. The average national price for midgrade gas was $2.71 and $2.87 for premium. Diesel stands at $2.97, down 5 cents. ___
US oil and natural gas rig count drops by 56 to 1,069
HOUSTON (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. tumbled by 56 this week to 1,069 amid slumping oil prices. Houston-based Baker Hughes said Friday 825 rigs were seeking oil and 242 exploring for natural gas. Two
were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, 1,803 rigs were active. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas lost 36 rigs and Louisiana 18. New Mexico declined by five, North Dakota and Ohio each dropped three and Arkansas and Kansas lost two apiece.
Alaska gained four rigs, Pennsylvania and West Virginia were up three, Colorado and Oklahoma two and California one. Utah and Wyoming were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.

Pollsters From 1-A
The annual survey of public attitudes by the university’s Public Policy Research Lab shows 39 percent of respondents saying they were “very” or “somewhat” confident in state government’s ability to handle Louisiana’s most pressing problems. Nearly 60 percent of respondents said they were either “not very confident” or
is heading in the right direction, while 45 percent said the opposite. Just two years ago, 52 percent of the poll’s respondents answered “wrong direction” with 38 percent saying “right direction.” Asked what the state’s single most pressing problem is, 25 percent said education, 23 percent said the economy. No other problem listed drew more than a 9 percent response. LSU said pollsters surveyed 980 adults by phone from Jan. 12 to Feb. 13. That included 542 interviewed on landlines and 438 on cellphones — including 292 cellphone users who have no landline. Landline respondents were reached through “random digit dialing” to ensure people with and without listed numbers were reached. The overall survey’s margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Fifty-five percent of the respondents said they were about the same financially as they were a year ago; 22 percent said better and 23 percent said worse. Fortyeight percent said business conditions are about the same with 26 percent saying better and 24 percent saying worse. Residents in the southwestern part of the state have the most positive outlook, with 55 percent saying the state is heading in the right direction compared to 42 percent who say the state is heading in the wrong direction. “This is the only region where right direction outpolls wrong direction,” the LSU analysis said. Other results: — While Republicans dominate Louisiana government, 35 percent of respondents consider themselves Democrats. Twenty-seven percent identified as Republican and 28 percent as independent. — Asked what grade they would give Louisiana public schools overall, only 4 percent of respondents said an A; 14 percent, a B; 39 percent, a C; 23 percent,
“not at all confident.” Still, an analysis accompanying the survey said it marked the first time in six years that the number expressing confidence had not dropped. “From 2009 through 2014, confidence steadily eroded,” said the report, which was released Thursday. Overall optimism in the state appears to have grown: Forty-four percent of respondents said the state
