Hurricane prep sales tax holiday scrapped for this month
T h i s week marks Hurricane Preparedness Week and Lafourche Parish GovW ernment is encouraging all citizens to prepare for the coming 2016 Atlantic basin hurricane season. But they’ll have to do without the extra benefit of the annual sales tax holiday. Louisiana’s revenue department is trying to get out the word that the state won’t be holding a sales tax holiday for hurricane preparedness supplies. The holiday normally takes place on the last Saturday and Sunday in May, exempting hurricane preparedness items, like batteries and lanterns, from state sales taxes. Lawmakers temporarily suspended the sales tax break in a recent special session in which they made a lengthy list of changes to tax exemption programs, as a way to drum up money for the state budget. However, Lafourche Parish Government and emergency management officials still encourage residents to prepare now for See Hurricane Page 5-A

The North Lafourche Levee District will provide equipment to assist the South Lafourche Levee District and Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District with construction and mitigation for two segments of the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection Project from Pointe Aux Chene to Cut Off. According to their website, the NLLD deepwater excavator will be used to support the dredging of Grand Bayou so that dredge material can be used to build up the first lift for Reach K of the levee system, closest to Pointe Aux Chene. The excavator will also be used to create marsh terracing as part of the wetlands mitigation required for Reaches K and L, which connect to the South Lafourche Levee System. “These two segments of Morganza will be very important in providing hurricane flood protection to the western side of Lafourche, from Larose to Thibodaux. Lawmakers OK separate courtroom seating for crime victims
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lawmakers have given final passage to a proposal that would let crime victims, crime witnesses or their family members seek courtroom seating separate from defendants, defendants’ family members or defense witnesses. The bill by Sen. J.P. Morell, a New Orleans De-
mocrat, was sent to the governor’s desk with an 86-0 House vote Wednesday. Morrell has described his proposal as helping to protect victims of domestic violence, who often testify against their abusers. Others questioned whether lawmakers need to tell judges how to seat people in their courtrooms. Senate Bill 320: www.legis.la.gov ___

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Monthly pension checks will grow on July 1 for thousands of retired state employees, public school workers and teachers. Gov. John Bel Edwards signed the cost-ofliving increase into law Thursday. The pension hike, sponsored by Republican Sen. Barrow Peacock, of Shreveport, is tied to adjustments in how the retirement systems pay for raises and administrative costs, aimed at lessening long-term debts. The governor signed all three bills. Nearly 125,000 retirees over the age of 60 will see increases, ranging from 1.5 percent for retired state workers and teachers to as much as 4 percent for retired state troopers. The average monthly increase will be about $30. The increases are estimated to cost $383 million. Senate Bills 2, 5 and 18: www.legis.la.gov ___

House committee halts equal pay bill supported by governor
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lawmakers in the Louisiana House have handed Gov. John Bel Edwards a significant defeat for his legislative agenda, rejecting an equal pay bill that was a cornerstone of Edwards’ campaign for governor.

The Senate had backed the measure requiring private businesses to pay the same wages to men and women who perform the same work. But the House labor committee voted 105 against advancing the bill to the full House for debate. Bill supporters cited statistics showing that women in Louisiana consistently earn less, across

“Most people don’t realize that 94 percent of our shrimp is imported, mainly from countries such as India, Thailand and Indonesia,” said Thomas Hymel, LSU AgCenter/Louisiana Sea Grant extension agent, and director of the Louisiana Direct Seafood program. “But there is no need to abandon your love of shrimp, as you can take steps to make sure you know where your seafood comes from. Carefully reading labels, especially the back of the product, for country of origin is one way. Buying direct from fishermen, or a trusted local retailer, is another.” LouisianaDirectSeafood.com, an initiative administered by Louisiana Sea Grant and LSU AgCenter, provides an online resource for consumers to connect with fishermen in four main coastal areas — Cameron, Delcambre, Lafour che-T err ebonne, and Southshore/New Orleans. Each area has it’s own web site, where fishermen can post their most recent catch for sale, and how to contact them directly. Facebook pages and enewsletters for each region also serve to keep consumers in the know. “There is a reason farm-to-table has become so popular,” said Hymel. “People are looking to make a connection with their food, and with local producers. Seafood fresh off the boat has nutritional benefits, as well as superior taste and texture.” “Though we’re talking up the opening of shrimp season, summer is a great time for all manner of fresh seafood, as crabs get fatter and many species of fish are running like red snapper, tuna, wahoo and king mackerel. Even oysters are available and safe to eat thanks to time and temperature safety rules; plus a new method of off bottom oyster farming produces a delicious summer oyster. How fortunate we are to have all this bounty at our fingertips,” stated Hymel.

Edwards From 1-A
Edwards described the measure as having “tight controls” so it won’t become “a medication that is recommended for every ailment that is out there.” Lawmakers sided with parents who said their children’s medical conditions could be helped with therapeutic marijuana, who talked of moving to Colorado to lessen their children’s suffering and who launched billboards and social media campaigns for the bill. Corkern and her son, who has a rare brain disorder that causes repeated seizures, were on one of those billboards and were a regular presence around the Louisiana Capitol. “Connor’s neurologist in New Orleans feels (medical marijuana) is the last resort for him in order to control his seizures, because we’ve obviously tried everything and the meds just aren’t working for him. They’re making his body waste away,” Corkern said. The Corkerns are from Edwards’ hometown of Amite and attend the same church as the governor, and they had a significant advocate on their side — the governor’s wife Donna — who attended committee

hearings with Katie Corkern and who was on hand for the bill signing. “In terms of lobbying the governor, nobody did that more effectively than Donna did over the last couple of months,” Edwards said. The law passed last year will eventually get medicinal-grade pot to people suffering from cancer and a severe form of cerebral palsy. Mills’ bill adds seizure disorders, HIV, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and other diseases to the list. The bill also sets a Sept. 1 deadline for LSU and Southern University to decide if they want to be the state-sanctioned grower of the product, in an effort to speed the decision-making since the schools get first right of refusal to grow the plant. It also reworks some of the regulatory language to address doctors’ concerns about running afoul of federal drug regulations, allowing a physician to “recommend” use of thera-
peutic marijuana, rather than prescribe the drug. Mills has estimated Louisiana is 18 months to 24 months from getting medical marijuana to patients. The state-sanctioned grower needs to be selected, along with 10 distributors. tion, not aimed at women. He noted strip clubs hire both men and women, and his amendment didn’t specify gender. “People can’t take a joke these days,” he said after the debate ended. While Havard said he respects Stokes, he didn’t intend to apologize to her. “Political correctness is killing us. I’m not going to apologize,” he said. “I figured it would probably offend somebody, but it’s America. You have a right to be offended and get offended.” Rep. Chad Brown, DPlaquemine, also raised concerns about the bill, saying the state doesn’t enact age restrictions on other professions. “I don’t know how we can praise and rejoice the virtues of liberty when it’s convenient and then reject them when it’s inconvenient,” Brown said. Rep. Walt Leger, D-New Orleans, urged support of the bill, saying it could improve lives. “In this type of business, there are young women who are preyed upon because of the circumstances they find themselves in,” he said. The House voted 96-0 for the bill Wednesday — without the amendment attached. Havard and Brown voted for the bill, which heads back to the Senate for approval of a technical change. Bill to raise stripper age passes, after outrage over ‘joke’
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana House agreed Wednesday to block strip clubs from hiring dancers under the age of 21, but only after a lawmakers’ joke that strippers should be young and less than 160 pounds provoked outrage about the treatment of women in the chamber. The Senate-backed proposal to raise the age was described as a way to fight human trafficking. But the proposal prompted snickering and jokes from several lawmakers in the House — and an amendment from Rep. Kenny Havard, R-Jackson, to limit strippers to between 21 and 28 years old and no more than 160 pounds. He quickly withdrew the amendment. But some female lawmakers were not amused. Rep. Julie Stokes, RKenner, stormed to the microphone and said: “Looking out over this body, I’ve never been so repulsed to be a part of it.” Stokes described the amendment as “utterly disrespectful and disgusting” and urged her colleagues to treat women with respect. She said she’s regularly seen women treated differently than men in the House. “It’s got to stop,” she said. Havard said the amendment was a commentary about overregula-

Air Sick
A little guy gets on a plane and sits next to the window. A few minutes later, a big, heavy, strong, mean-looking guy plops down in the seat next to him and immediately falls asleep. The little guy starts to feel a little airsick, but he’s afraid to wake the big guy up to ask if he can move aside to let him go to the bathroom. He knows he can’t climb over him, and so the little guy is sitting
there, looking at the big guy, trying to decide what to do. Suddenly, the plane hits an air pocket and an uncontrollable wave of nausea passes through the little guy. He can’t hold it in any longer and hurls all over the big guy’s chest. About five minutes later the big guy wakes up, looks down, and sees the vomit all over him. “So,” says the little guy, “are you feeling any better now?”

Previous to this Family of the Year award from the state, Stacey and Julie had also been chosen as the 2015-2016 Culture of Life winners. They received this award because of their work with the Baby Bottle Campaign, Crossroads Pregnancy Center, Eucharist processions in and around church, and prolife rosaries after mass on the first Saturday of each month. Stacey and Julie serve Holy Savior Catholic Church in many ways. Stacey attends daily mass when work permits, Julie attends all daily masses, and both attend every mass on the weekends. Both also serve at funerals as a lector, Eucharist Minister, and altar server. They oversee the liturgy for the church, assist for weddings and baptisms when they are available, and help in setting up and picking up after all masses that they attend. Stacey is also the 11th grade confirmation class teacher. He oversees all high masses under the priest’s directions. Julie

ello) Be the person that God made you to be. “All that glisters is not gold.” (The Merchant of Venice) Many things in life appear more beneficial than they really are. We have to learn to choose the eternal values. “O God, O God, how weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!” (Hamlets) Jesus told us, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses himself.” “To be, or not to be: that is the question.” (Hamlet) We all have a choice to be alive or be like dead people walking. We can choose to the best version of ourselves or we can give up on life. “Words without thoughts never to heaven go.” (Hamlet) If our hearts are not in our worship and prayers, then they are meaningless. Jesus said, “True worshipers will the Father in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23) “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” (Hamlet) Often people try to cover up their guilt or the mistakes they have made by protesting to those looking into the situation. “Oftentimes excusing of a fault doth make the fault the worse by the excuse.” (King John) When we make a mistake, the best thing to do is say we are sorry, not make excuses for our actions. “The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” (The Merchant of Venice) We saw the devil quote Scripture when he was try-

teaches 10th grade CCD, and leads the rosary before 7 a.m. mass every Sunday. Stacey and Julie are also great assets to their community. Stacey cuts the grass for the Heart of Jesus Dominican nuns every week, and Julie assists there with yard work. Both bring parishioners to mass that cannot drive themselves or have no other means of transportation. They deliver Knights of Columbus and/or Holy Savior Lenten meals to the elderly and homebound. They frequently visit the nursing homes and hospitals, and they bring communion to the homebound. Both feel that one of the greatest gifts that they have received is the opportunity to pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet with the sick, the elderly, and the dying. Stacey and Julie are most deserving of the honor of receiving the state honor of Family of the Year and are congratulated on this significant award.

William Shakespeare produced 38 plays, 154 sonnets and five narrative poems. We remember him for both his work ethic and remarkable understanding of human nature – two qualities that every Christian should possess. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death, (April 23, 1616), I have pulled together some of his most memorable quotations. “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” (Measure for Measure) We too often live in fear. It causes us not to act or to become the person God wants us to be. Jesus often told us, “Have faith in God. Do not be afraid.” “Have more than thou showest. Speak less than thou knowest.” (King Lear) Have more depth than you are willing to show others but don’t be a show-off trying to prove how smart you are. “This above all: to thine ownself be true. And it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” (Hamlet) Be yourself. God made everyone unique and gifted. Stop trying to be someone else. Look into yourself and find your own gifts and develop them. “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” (All’s Well That Ends Well) Author Howard Behar says, “Our success is directly related to our clarity and honesty about who we are, who we’re not, where we want to go, and how we’re going to get there.” “Certain, men should be what they seem.” (Oth-
ing to tempt Jesus in the desert. “God has given you one face, and you make yourself another.” (Hamlet) We all wear masks but sometimes we forget to take them off and reveal our true selves. “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” (All’s Well That Ends Well) Good advice. “A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” (Measure for Measure) The more people learn about life, the more they realize how much they don’t know. “God shall be my hope, my stay, my guide and lantern to my feet.” (Henry V) Well said. “A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.” Attributed to Shakespeare, not in a play. “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.” (The Merchant of Venice) We should never get tired of doing good, even in our wicked world.
