Special column journeys down memory lane
A special guest column is making its debut in today’s edition and will be a regular Leroy Martin feature in coming editions. Most of you know the name Leroy Martin but what many of you may not know is Mr. Leroy’s interesting stories and journeys. As a past public official, singer, songwriter, radio personality, record producer, and last but not least, father, Mr. Leroy’s journeys and the role he played, many times ‘behind-the-scenes’, helped countless artists and musicians and made wonderful friendships and associations throughout his career. From the king himself, Elvis Presley, to local greats Pott Folse, Dudley Bernard, Harry Anselmi, and everyone in between, we hope you enjoy Mr. Leroy’s stories as much as we enjoy bringing them to you. Look for “In a Small Pond”, the name of his column, in this and future editions as we journey down memory lane.

Reeling in a catfish is Cody Louviere from St. Amant during the 4th Annual Casting For Kids Fishing Tournament held at Boudreaux’s Motel in Leeville Saturday. Cody and other young anglers braved the nasty weather to attend the tournament. This Thursday, the granddaddy of all fishing tournaments begins with the International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo. The weather shouldn’t be a problem for the thousands who will descend on the Island in search of fish and fun.

Fishing frenzy …
Three people, including a Golden Meadow Police Officer, were arrested in connection to a methamphetamine investigation. Officer Ashley Pollard, 37, and his girlfriend, Anna King, 31, both of 113 West 82nd Street in Cut Off, were arrested Monday along with Pollard’s brother, Courtney Pollard, 33, of 2016 South Bayou Drive in Golden Meadow. The Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force began actively investigating the case in April. Through the investigation, agents learned the Pollards allegedly produced methamphetamine for personal use, and King purchased pseudoephedrine and other products for methamphetamine production. Agents obtained arrest warrants for all three individuals, as well as a search warrant for the

bruising on the child’s body and learned Gaudet had allegedly punched the child. Through questioning of all parties involved and further investigation, detectives discovered a history of alleged physical abuse of four children, all under the age of 13, by Triche and Gaudet. Detectives also learned Gaudet allegedly forced three of the children to engage in sexual activity with him. Detectives made contact with Triche and Gaudet on Wednesday, July 16. Following questioning, both were placed under arrest and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Gaudet was booked with three counts of Aggravated Rape and four counts of Cruelty to Juveniles with Force/Violence (Child Endangerment).

A south Louisiana tradition returns this weekend as the town of Grand Isle prepares to host its annual International Tarpon Rodeo. Established in 1928, the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo is believed to be the oldest fishing tournament in the United States. During rodeo weekend, the population of Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island swells from approximately 1,300 residents to 15,000, maybe even 20,000, tourists, anglers and party-goers, since the event is more than just a fishing contest. Annually, anglers from throughout the south and indeed the nation come to the waters off Grand Isle to compete in a fishing competition for a number of different species including tarpon, blue marlin, wahoo, dolphin, barracuda, and yellowfin tuna, just to name a few. Anglers also fish for numerous shoreline fish such as speckled trout, redfish and white trout. Awards are given for first, second and third places in all categories except tarpon, blue marlin and the big-game tag-and-release division. The tarpon category will award 10 places, and there will be two places in the blue-marlin category. Rodeo entry fee is $40, which includes a hat and rodeo program. This year’s rodeo president is Ricky Templet, and admiral of the fleet is John Georges. In addition to fishing, the rodeo is renown for its festivities off the water as well and is sometimes referred to as one giant block party, with plenty of music, live entertainment and great food. There are craft vendors, merchandise booths and plenty of entertainment and events for everyone. See Tarpon Rodeo Page 8-A

“In a Small Pond By Leroy Martin
An introduction ‌ Welcome to a new column which will be about people I have met and events I have encounted during my 47 years in the Lafourche Parish Court House and my lifetime in the music business. In 1963 I wrote a column for the Lafourche Parish Press called “File Gumboâ€?, which lasted until the Lafourche Comet bought out the press and later became the Daily Comet. Thus ended my first venture in journalism. I must have been good however, because here it is only 50 years later and I’m asked to write another one. To begin, for the generations who don’t know me, or care, (must be a whole bunch), a short biography. I was born August 4, 1929, the year of the big crash. They still don’t know if I caused the Great Depression or the depression caused me. My father Roosevelt (named after Teddy, not FDR) was a fisherman and my mother Helen, (named after her grandmother, Helen Cox), was a housewife. I have only one sibling, my sister Betty who now lives in Lafayette, and has three daughters, Vickie, Ann, and Amy. In 1942, we moved to New Orleans where my dad worked at Higgins Industries building landing crafts during World War II. He left trawling during the 1938 shrimp strike that is depicted in Glen Pitre’s movie “$8.50â€?. When the war ended, we moved back to Golden Meadow where I graduated from Golden Meadow High School in 1946. There were only 11 grades then. The house I was born in was then in Golden Meadow. When they incor -

porated the town, we were left out by 2 city blocks. It later became Galliano, but our address then was Cut Off, so, technically I lived in three towns without moving more than 600 feet from where I was born. Guess that didn’t hurt when I later ran for public office. My first job after graduation was in the oil fields working for Jimmie Wood, wildcatter. The local boys did not get the better jobs, so one day, when I was 17, after hauling pipes knee deep in mud, I came home and waiting with my dad was Edless Ledet of General Seafood, a Boston company having a base in Golden Meadow with boats named “40 Phantom No. 1, No. 2,â€? etc. I left a $50 a week job for $25 a week, but oh joy ‌ out of the mud, and behind a desk as a filing clerk. When General Seafood closed their base, I went to work for Golden Meadow Diesel, Mr. Joe Bagala and Harold Rome for $30 a week as a stock clerk. In 1952, my best friend, Dick Guidry ran for State Representative and I played music and wrote campaign songs for him. He won by

17 votes and became and still was the youngest member ever elected to that body. When he passed away recently, we lost a great public servant who did so much for our area. I miss him a lot. Anyway, Dick had promised the people of South Lafourche to station a driver’s license examiner here so they would not have to go to Thibodaux. Gov. Bob Kennon, a reformer, had passed a driver’s license law requiring written and oral exams to obtain a license. In the past, a license was only a revenue law and you could get one out of any deputy sheriff or state trooper from the front seat of his car. (More about that and my political and musical experiences in future columns.) If you wish to comment, good or bad, I’m at leroymartin1929@gmail.com. See, I don’t hide my age. Join me next week and remember cher, you pinch the tail and suck the head, not the other way around!
Pedestrian killed on La. 1 in Raceland
State police say a pedestrian died while walking into the path of a vehicle on Louisiana Highway 1 in Raceland Saturday night. Trooper Evan Harrell said an investigation revealed that David Bergeron, age 29, of Raceland, along with two friends, were standing off the west side of LA 1 waiting to cross. For unknown reasons, Bergeron attempted to cross the highway and walked directly into the path of a 1997 Ford F-150 traveling south. The F-150 was being driven by Billy Duet, age 51, of Raceland. Bergeron was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Duet, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured in the crash. Alcohol use or impairment is unknown, but routine toxicology tests are pending for Bergeron. Duet submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.

Both sets of figures were released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The number of unemployed Louisianans rose by almost 2,000 in June to about 105,000. The labor force shrank, as did people reporting they had jobs. ___

BRIEF
Saltwater fishing license cost to increase
For the first time in 14 years, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will increase its license fees for recreational, saltwater fishing from $15 to $22.50 on August 1.   The increase places Louisiana firmly in the middle of saltwater license fees among Gulf States.  The Department expects to generate an additional  $2.25 million annually, which will be used to fund the agency’s LA Creel program. The Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana, with LDWF support, sponsored a bill to increase license fees. The bill was introduced by Rep. Stuart Bishop, passed the 2014 Legislative Session, and was signed by Governor Jindal on June 19.  The license fee increase contains a sunset provision where the increase will have to be revisited in 2018. ___
La. jobless rate rises in June for second month
Louisiana’s job market softened in June, as the unemployment rate rose for a second month in a row and payroll growth slowed. The state’s jobless rate rose to 5 percent from 4.9 percent in May. Louisiana’s unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in June 2013. A separate survey shows employers added 2,500 workers to payrolls in June. That’s healthy growth and yet another record high, but slower than the big 8,500-job increase recorded in May. Louisiana remains below the nation’s 6.1 percent jobless rate.
Louisiana hunting regulations pamphlet available online
The 2014-15 Louisiana Hunting Regulations pamphlet is now available online through the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website. To access the document go to http://www.wlf. louisiana.gov/hunting/regulations. The printed version of the publication will be available in early August. The 2014-15 pamphlet contains all dates and regulations that pertain to small game, deer and turkey hunting on private land and state wildlife management areas. Dates and regulations pertaining to hunting on some federal properties within Louisiana are also included. New Orleans putting smoked butts in a better place
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In New Orleans, discarded butts are being turned into something useful. The first of 50 cigarette butt recycling receptacles was installed at a downtown intersection Monday. Developers of the program say New Orleans is the first U.S. city to participate in a largescale recycling effort launched in Canada last year. New Orleans Downtown Development District spokeswoman Devona Dolliole said a one-day sweep in 2011 turned up nearly

7,000 cigarette butts downtown. That adds up to a lot of cigarette butts. The organic materials, such as tobacco and paper, are composted. Cigarette filters, though they look and feel like fiber, are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic. Once collected, they are shredded and bio-toxins removed with the use of gamma radiation. The filters are then melted into plastic pellets for industrial use in the same way a plastic bottle would be recycled. ___
Hunters can purchase duck stamps Aug. 1
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will begin offering federal duck stamps to waterfowl hunters as an online option, starting Aug. 1, 2014. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently selected Louisiana, along with Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Virginia to provide this federal E-Stamp option to their hunters. Hunters who purchase the federal E-Stamp online starting Aug. 1 may use the confirmation number given at the time of purchase for 45 days from the date of purchase. Within that time frame, a U.S. Postal Service certified, federal duck stamp will be mailed to the hunter. To purchase a federal EStamp online starting Aug. 1, go to www.wlf.louisiana. gov/licenses/hunting-licenses. Hunters will also have the option to purchase a temporary federal E-Stamp from any retail vendor selling hunting licenses. The temporary stamp issued at the time of purchase will allow the hunter to legally harvest waterfowl while awaiting an actual stamp that will be mailed to the license holder’s address.  After the 45 days, the customer must carry their federal duck stamp while hunting.

Tarpon Rodeo From 1-A
This year’s master of ceremonies will be Fox 8 weatherman Bob Breck. Festivities shift into full gear on Thursday with fishing beginning at daybreak. The rodeo pavilion, located at the end of the island where LA Highway 1 ends, near the Sand Dollar Marina, opens at 11 a.m. with registration, food, merchandise, educational booths, and the always popular children’s crab races. That evening, at 7 p.m., is the President’s Welcome Party open to the public with boiled shrimp and a cash bar. Entertainment will be provided by the Rockin’ Dopsie band. Fishing continues on Friday and so do the festivities at the rodeo grounds. From noon to 4 p.m., entertainment will be provided by DJ Captain P. Fans of the popular TV show Swamp People will get to meet R.J. and Jay Paul Molinere for autographs and photos from 3 to 5 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Cowboy Mouth from 6 to 8:30 p.m., followed by Foghat from 8:30 to 10 p.m. On Saturday, the Molineres make a return visit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Captain P from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wiseguys will perform at the pavilion from 6 to 8 p.m. At that time Bob Breck will present the rodeo awards for top fishermen
and women and also the grand prize winner of the boat, motor and trailer. At 9:30, Wiseguys will again take the stage to continue the party. Fish caught during the rodeo are displayed after they are weighed in at the Grand Isle Pavilion all 3 days of the event. The fish are iced down and are either donated to Baton Rouge food banks or the Louisiana Dept of Wildlife & Fisheries uses them for studies. Anglers are hoping to break the rodeo record for the largest tarpon landed at 206 pounds by Johnny Guidry of Galliano in 1973. For more information on the Rodeo, visit tarponrodeo.org.

Stress Disorder he says he developed following overseas deployments with both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. Agents also made contact with King and Courtney Pollard on Monday and placed them under arrest. During a subsequent search of the Cut Off residence, agents discovered additional evidence of the manufacturing process. All three were placed under arrest and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. They were booked with one count each of creation/operation of a clandestine laboratory for the unlawful manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance.

All three were released on Monday after posting bond. Judge F. Hugh Larose had set Ashley Pollard’s bond at $10,000 and had set King’s bond at $5,000, while Courtney Pollard’s bond had been set at $25,000. Courtney Pollard’s criminal history includes 14 prior arrests for several charges, including various battery charges, drug possession and several counts of contempt of court. Ashley Pollard and King do not have prior criminal histories. Golden Meadow Chief of Police Reggie Pitre said Ashley Pollard has resigned from the Golden Meadow Police Department and issued the following statement regarding Pollard’s arrest: “I am sorely disappointed in the actions of this former officer. The Golden Meadow Police Department has no tolerance for criminal behavior, and we want to reassure the public that this officer’s actions are not a reflection on our department as a whole. My sincere hope is that this ultimately results in him getting the treatment and help he needs.”

He is currently being held in lieu of $350,000 bond as set by Judge F. Hugh Larose. Triche was booked with four counts of Cruelty to Juveniles with Force/Violence (Child Endangerment). Due to the nature of the investigation and the age of the victims, no further details will be released regarding the alleged incidents or the nature of the relationships between the offenders and victims.

Lawsuit
From 1-A
the lawsuit was filed in Baton Rouge district court, seeking an immediate suspension of the standards in schools. “Unless an injunction issues herein by the Court, needless time and resources will be expended in the teaching, testing, learning, and financing of Common Core, all to the detriment of the citizens of Louisiana,” the lawsuit says. The lawsuit alleges the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, or BESE, and the state education department did not follow Louisiana’s Administrative Procedures Act for rolling out the new standards in classrooms. The act requires public notice, a 90-day comment period and legislative oversight, provisions that have been followed prior to other changes that have been made to education standards in Louisiana, the legislators said. “We find nowhere in statute that gives them an exemption,” Geymann said. Education board President Chas Roemer and Education Superintendent John White said BESE isn’t required to follow the Administrative Procedures Act. “The premise of their complaint is false,” Roemer said. “We adopted the standards clearly, and we followed the law.” White cited a 2012 law that requires the state to use nationally recognized content standards, saying Common Core is the only set of standards to meet those criteria. The legal challenge is part of a continuing struggle over the Common Core standards, which have become controversial since BESE adopted them in 2010. The standards, grade-by-grade benchmarks of what students should learn in English and
math, have been adopted by more than 40 states. Gov. Bobby Jindal, a one-time Common Core supporter and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, now opposes the standards as a federal intrusion into local education, echoing criticisms levied by tea party supporters around the country. But he and other Common Core critics have been unable to persuade BESE to change course. Lawmakers also upheld use of the standards earlier this year. Jindal has suspended state contracts used by the education department as a way to stop the purchase of
testing material aligned with Common Core. “Though we were not involved in the filing of this suit, we support these and other efforts by legislators to ensure the law is followed,” the governor said in a statement. Without following the Administrative Procedures Act, the lawsuit says citizens “were denied their procedural due process rights to have their comments and concerns heard” before adoption and use of the standards. The lawsuit was filed by 13 Republicans, two Democrats and two legislators without party affiliation.

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent. 2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.” 3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a little salted. 4. A dyslexic man walked into a bra. 5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says: “A beer please, and one for the road.” 6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?” 7. “Doc, I can’t stop singing The Green, Green Grass of Home.” “That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome.” “Is it common?” “Well, It’s Not Unusual.” 8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, “I was artificially inseminated this morning.” “I don’t believe you,” says Dolly. “It’s true; no bull!” exclaims Daisy. 9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either. 10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you’ve heard this bull before. 11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn’t find any. 12. A man woke up in
a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, “Doctor, doctor, I can’t feel my legs!” The doctor replied, “I know, I amputated your arms!” 13. I went to a seafood disco last week... and pulled a mussel. 14. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh. 15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, “Dam!” 16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Not surprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it, too. 17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them

One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named ‘Ahmal.’ The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him ‘Juan.’ Year’s later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds: “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.” 19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (oh, man, this is so bad, it’s good) ... a super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis. 20. A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large. 21. And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
