Jamboree plans changed for local prep football teams
A ‘legend’ leaves his legacy

Gazette Sports Reports
For the first time in decades, South Lafourche and Central Lafourche won’t share a football jamboree this fall. South Lafourche head football coach Dennis Skains announced this week that the Tarpons’ annual home jamboree has been canceled for the 2015 season because of an inability to find schools willing to travel to Galliano to compete against the Tarpons and Trojans. South Lafourche High School had previously booked inner-city programs like Miller-McCoy Academy to play in the jamboree. But Miller McCoy disbanded in May, which led the school with a void that it couldn’t fill. The Tarpons will now play its jamboree in Lafayette, while the Trojans will travel to Thibodaux. “It’s really unfortunate, because I know it’s tradition and I know that a lot of the people in the community really looked forward to seeing us play on that first See Jamboree Page 6-A

Sidney Triche’s volunteer help at auctioning has raise millions of dollars for various charities, churches, and causes locally from Lockport to Grand Isle. He started auctioning in 1960. Thousands of local residents, businesses and civic organizations have benefited from Sidney’s auctioning skills. “Our goal is to teach you to be unafraid of the water, to be able to swim,” said Peggy Bagala, a Les Reflections founding member. Our community has yet again lost one of the good guys, something it can ill afford to do, because in today’s world, there just aren’t enough of them. A d r i a n “Boo” Legendre passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 17 at the age of 43. Whether you knew him by Boo, Do-Do, Booster or one of his many other nicknames, you can probably Boo Legendre recount one of his legendary tales of adventure. Boo had a knack for making people laugh, oftentimes at his own expense. He was the life of the party, the office and any event he attended. He always found a way to brighten any situation or turn a negative into a positive. He was always full of life and love and lived to make others happy. But Boo was so much more than just a goofball or a funny guy. He was a passionate man who made others feel truly special. He went above and beyond to help so many people, never asking for anything in return or for glorification. He was an example of how we should all live. First and foremost, Boo loved his family. He and his wife Addy’s relationship truly embodied the concept of holy matrimony, when two become one. They shared everything with one another. Although Boo would oftentimes give her a hard time, playing jokes on her and enlisting the help of his daughters to do so, he always boasted about how she is such an amazing wife and mother. His daughters, Angelique and Angelle, were the lights of his life. Unlike typical teenagers, these girls loved spending time with their Do-Do. He’d take them and their friends tubing in Grand Isle. He’d watch movie marathons and attend cheerleading competitions. He was their biggest fan and they were his. See Boo Page 5-A
Judge: BP payouts to local entities to start soon for spill
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge says BP will begin paying up to $1 billion in settlements to compensate local governments across the Gulf Coast for lost tax revenue and other economic damages they blame on the company’s 2010 oil spill. An order issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said all of the payments to local governments must be made within 30 days. BP’s Macondo well blew out on April 20, 2010, leading to deadly explosions aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and the nation’s largest offshore oil spill. The federal government used a team of scientists to calculate that about 172 million gallons spilled into the Gulf. BP put the number much lower, closer to 100 million gallons. July 15 was the deadline for roughly 500 local governments in five states to decide whether to accept BP’s settlement offers as part of a broader See BP Page 6-A

CODOFIL director encourages French immersion
On a recent trip down Bayou Lafourche on down to Grand Isle, I was not surprised to encounter quite a number of French speakers. We at the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) have always known that your neck of the marshes is arguably the most French in French Louisiana. And speaking of marshes, how about the return of the once endangered Louisiana alligator! The state says that gator egg harvesters are required to return 12% of the new hatchlings to their natural habitat in the marshes. The strategy worked because gators are now thriving. Similarly, the Louisiana French-speaker (Cajun, Native American, Creole, etc.) may also be considered an “endangered species.” How much of the tourism industry in Louisiana is dependent on our French brand? What are our plans for sustaining the authenticity of that brand with future Louisiana speakers of French who will faithfully interpret our values, our way of life? Everything and everyone has an expiration date. Why couldn’t we – why shouldn’t we – do as much for our children as we do for
Due to limited space, community events submitted for publication will be published under the Calendar of Events / News to Use column for free twice ONLY. Any organization or club wishing to have their event published more than twice will have to pay a $10 fee each time the event is published after the two-time limit.
our reptiles? Allow students the opportunity to learn their ancestral language and leverage it for careers in the 21st century. Replenish the marshes. Lafourche Parish has a wonderful French as a second language program taught by very competent teachers. But up, down and across the bayou, French is not a foreign language. Another model that has been in Louisiana for over 30 years is French immersion where students are not taught French but they are taught in French. By the 3rd grade they are functionally bilingual and perform on achievement tests as well, if not better, than their monolingual peers. There are close to 5,000 of these French immersion students in the state today and every one of them is on a fast track to an exciting future. Not in Houston. Not in Atlanta. Right here where they want to be: in Louisiana. If we could have a minimum of 12% of future Lafourche leaders and entrepreneurs fluent in French and plowed back into the natural habitat of French Louisiana (through the local economy), we, too, will thrive. CODOFIL stands ready to help develop this unique renewable resource. Charles Larroque Directeur exécutif, CODOFIL

“In a Small Pond By Leroy Martin
Life Magazine
Two days after the 1952 “All Parish versus “Old Regular Lafourche Parish election, arguably the fiercest political battle of all times, the races for sheriff and representatives were still too close to call and the poll commissioners were still counting paper ballots. Although most races were determined Sheriff Frank Ducos was slightly ahead of Clinton Cheramie, and Dick Guidry was 17 votes ahead of Harvey Peltier, Jr., in unofficial tabulations. My campaign song parody of “Shrimp Boats entitled “Insurance Checks had been played on radio and sound trucks favoring the Kennon/All Parish
ticket against the Spath/Old Regulars in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes. It was mostly about local issues. Keep that in mind. That morning, I answered a knock on my door and in walked sheriff candidate Clinton Cheramie, whose election status was still in doubt. “There’s trouble brewing about that campaign song, he said. “Someone is coming to interrogate you (his words) and I have arranged to meet them at my office tomorrow morning. Do you have a copy of the record? I destroyed mine. “I have one, I answered

and he said “follow me. Walking to the banks of Bayou Lafourche, less than 50 feet from my house, he took the record and sailed it into the water. We thought he had, but it caught the wind and sailed across the bayou unto Highway 308. “Let’s go find it, Clinton said and we jumped into his car, drove two miles north to the Galliano Platoon Bridge, crossed over and drove to the approximate area we thought it had landed. Sure enough, there it lay in a ditch by the road. He picked it up and unsuccessfully tried to cut it with his pocketknife, but it was aluminum coated with shellac so he bent it, stomped it
with his foot and threw again. This time it sank, much to our relief. “I think we’re safe now, he assured me as he drove me back home. “Safe from what I wondered as the situation and his concern began to worry me. I was 21, had never been in trouble and now I thought “for a stupid song? The next morning I met with Clinton and his lawyer and in walked a pretty young lady with a camera and note pad in hand who announced, “I’m from Life Magazine and they want a story about the Governor’s election and especially that campaign song Shrimp Boats about deadheads.
HOUMA, La. (AP) — Police in Louisiana have shot and killed three men in three cities over three days. Each was self-defense, said police spokesmen in Houma, Shreveport and New Orleans. Authorities said an unidentified man shot Monday in Houma pointed a gun at officers after a car chase; Khari Westly, 33, of Shreveport, fired twice at officers on Sunday, and Christopher Olmstead, 60, of New Orleans fought with an officer Saturday. Nobody else was wounded in any of the incidents. Houma is about 55 miles southwest of New Orleans, in Cajun country. Shreveport is about 15 miles from the Texas state line and 280 miles northwest of New Orleans. Houma police, Terrebonne Parish sheriff’s deputies and Louisiana State Police were involved in Monday’s Houma shooting, state police spokesman Evan Harrell told the Courier. A chase after a theft suspect had ended when officers used a deflation device to stop the man’s car, investigators told WDSUTV. The man then got out of the vehicle and pointed a weapon toward the officers, investigators said. Sunday’s incident in Shreveport began when a teenager called, saying Westly had left a Shreveport home after holding her and another teenager at gunpoint for nearly seven hours, according to police spokesman Bill Goodin. Police say Westley returned when his estranged wife showed up to check on the teens, aged 16 and 19 years old. Goodin says Westly fired at least twice at his wife and once at police, then ran away. He says a short chase ended when Westly turned and shot at officers again. Four officers fired back.
They are on paid administrative leave. On Saturday, New Orleans police said Olmstead was driving erratically, crashing through a gate and hitting houses and parked cars in his Lower 9th Ward neighborhood, when a resident flagged down a uniformed detective working on an unrelated case in the area. Olmstead was unarmed but got out of his car and fought with Detective Timothy Bender. Police said Bender fired in self-defense. Dr. Jeffrey Rouse, the Orleans Parish coroner, said Monday that Olmstead was hit in the neck, chest and abdomen by bullets that entered the front of his body. The shooting remains under investigation.

“I wrote and recorded it, I confessed, “but it only played in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, and the Governor’s election is only mentioned once with the line ‘Kennon will win, he’s gonna clean out, the deadheads that are ruining our state.’ Otherwise, it was about local issues. She kept writing and asked me to pose with my guitar, which I didn’t have. “No problem, she said as she handed me a record from an old phonograph in the corner. “Cover the label with your hand and hold it up, she said and took more pictures. Clinton and his lawyer were grinning as she left, saying, “The issue comes out Monday. Life had the largest circulation of any national magazine. Early Monday I went to the drug store and bought a copy. I saw pictures of Kennon and candidates Carlos Spath and Earl Long with their wives and entourage gathered around a
3-A
radio. They looked sad. The headline read: “Long Long Rule Comes To An End. Kennon promised to cut taxes, fire the Long deadheads, and at every stop throughout the state, to the tune of “Shrimp Boats his sound trucks would blare out his own campaign song “The Deadheads are Going. No picture of me, so my ego was bruised, but more importantly she had completely ignored the facts and indicated the song was all about Kennon and that it had been played statewide. I had lost my copy of Life in the Hurricane Hilda flood of 1964, so I held back this column until I hopefully found one. Amazon came through. I bought two for $7.00, (cost then .20 cents) stored one away and used relevant parts from the other to appear with this column. I hope you found it interesting. BYE NOW!

BRIEF State police seek driver who killed pedestrian in Gray
GRAY, La. (AP) — State police are looking for a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 24 in Gray. Trooper Evan Harrell said in a news release that 29-year-old Treyandis Rogers, of Thibodaux, died Sunday morning after being hit by a northbound vehicle. Harrell says Rogers was last seen leaving Houma about 2 a.m. and was walking home. The driver and time of the crash are unknown. ___
Remains of 36 unidentified Marines from WWII battle return
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (AP) — A group called History Flight recovered the remains of 36 Marines killed from the remote Pacific atoll of Tarawa, one of World War II’s bloodiest battles, the U.S. Marine Corps said. A ceremony was held Sunday in Pearl Harbor to mark their return. History Flight has started identifying the remains, and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency will complete the effort, the Marines said. The Marines plan to return the remains to their families after they’ve been identified. More than 990 U.S. Marines and 30 sailors died during the three-day Battle of Tarawa in 1943. Japanese machine gun fire killed scores of Marines when their boats got stuck on the reef at low tide during the U.S. amphibious assault. Americans who made it to the beach faced brutal hand-to-hand combat. Only 17 of the 3,500 Japanese troops survived. Of 1,200 Korean slave laborers on the island, 129 lived. The U.S. quickly buried the thousands of dead on the tiny atoll. But the graves were soon disturbed as the Navy urgently built a landing strip to prepare for an attack on the next Pacific island on their path to Tokyo. About 520 U.S. servicemen are still unaccounted for from the battle. ___
ATM workers forget bag of cash, man drives off with $150K
MAHWAH, N.J. (AP) — Police say a man drove off with a bag containing $150,000 in cash after two employees who were replenishing ATMs mistakenly left it on a lawn in northern New Jersey. Mahwah police say in a news release that the ATM employees had stopped at a business on Industrial Avenue when one of them placed the satchel on the front lawn as he moved items around in their vehicle. They drove off, forgetting the bag. Sometime after 11:15 a.m. Monday, surveillance video shows a passenger in a white van grabbing the bag. The van was seen in other video surveillance pulling into a nearby auto repair business and pilfering used tires. Police say the ATM employees are cooperating with the investigation.

Boo From 1-A
Boo, the son of Earl and Eva Legendre, valued family more than anything. In July 2011 Boo took over his father’s company, The Lafourche Gazette. He was extremely proud to be carrying on the family business, now in its 50th year. Boo was an exemplary boss, caring and respecting his employees, making sure they each knew how important they were not only to business operations, but also as a person. Boo, the son-in-law of Panky and Barbara Christen, was a real estate agent working under his fatherin-law at Century 21 American Realty. Boo recently became a licensed broker and had plans to take over the family business in January. He also was a partner in Coastal Restoration and owned crawfish ponds. Boo was an outdoor enthusiast and often said that his favorite type of work was the type where he could get dirty and enjoy the outdoors. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman and enjoyed offshore trips with his cousin and best friend, Ryan Robichaux, and other friends. Last year Boo brought in the top tarpon, weighing in at 188.10 pounds, and was the winner of the Coon Pop Classic.
Boo would always joke about wanting to be a legend and Ryan would always rib him about how he wasn’t one. “Boo would always say, ‘You can’t spell Legendre without l-e-g-e-n-d,’” Ryan said. “I’d always say, ‘Dude, you ain’t no legend.” Even though it was all done in jest, Ryan now realizes that in a way, Boo is a legend. There are many definitions for the word. A map legend is a guide that gives you information to read a map and help you figure out where you’re going. In life, we all need a guide to help us get to our final destination. Boo’s family and friends hope that others will take his life as an example of how to live our own and let him be our guide, our legend, which will lead us to our eternal home in Heaven. Boo never cared how much money a person had in their bank account, what clothes they wore or whose elbows he could rub. Boo never met a stranger. His funeral, which was attended by more than 700 people, was a testament to how great of a man he was, to how many lives he touched in just 43 years on Earth. What greater testament to Boo’s life would it be than for all of us to act the same way he did; to prioritize family and friends over
money and power. We all need to follow in his example and live like Boo. We need to not only tell people how important they are to us, but to also show them. We need to reach out to people in all walks of life and make a difference, because you never know whom it may help. We all need to strive to be a legend in our own way because we never know how long we have left. “I’m going to be a better man, father, and husband from knowing Boo. If half the individuals that made it to his funeral leave with that and take that and grasp that, this world would be a far better place,” said Ryan. The Legendre family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the support shown by the community following this tragic loss. The calls, cards, hugs and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Jamboree From 1-A
Friday night at home,” Skains said. “But we had some things happen that just made it impossible to continue this fall. Some schools that we usually asked to play no longer exist, and it really forced our hand and made us look to other jamborees.” For the Tarpons, the cancellation will mean a homecoming and reunion for Skains. While in Lafayette, South Lafourche will face Teurlings Catholic, the school that is the host of the Lafayette Jamboree. Teurlings is also Skains’ alma mater. He graduated from the Lafayette-based private school in the Class of 1996. After attending college, Skains returned from the school and was an assistant coach for Teurlings for many seasons, working with the Rebels’ defense. He said it won’t be easy to coach against a school that he knows so well, but added that it’ll be easier to do in a jamboree setting where the end result doesn’t matter in the regular season standings. Teurlings Catholic is a state power. Last season, the Rebels reached the State Quarterfinals in Division I – the most competitive private school playoff bracket since the LHSAA split schools for postseason play. The Tarpons will play the Rebels on a Thursday night (August 27) of the two-day jamboree. The game will be played on ULLafayette’s campus at Cajun Field. No starting time has been set yet. “I think playing on a college field in a big stadium is going to be a great experience for our kids,” Skains said. “And I think playing a team like Teurlings is going to be a big-time challenge for us. I know those guys are going to have a very good team, so it’ll be a good chance for us to see where we stand before starting the season.” While the Tarpons get on a bus and make a twohour drive to the west, Central Lafourche will trek just up the road. With the Tarpons Jamboree now defunct, the Trojans will hop into the multi-team jamboree that plays in Thibodaux. Several local teams compete in the event, which is annually put on by Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. Central Lafourche coach Keith Menard said that the Trojans would have stayed in South Lafourche if the event remained afloat. But Menard added that the opportunity to go to Thibodaux isn’t bad, either, touting that Central Lafourche will see a lot of the top teams in the area at the event. The Trojans finished with a 4-6 record last season. The Trojans also lost several of its key offensive players from that team. But Menard said during spring practices that he expects the Trojans to compete and push for the playoffs in what will be his third season with the team. “We’re going to play hard and give it our best shot,” Menard said. “We know what our goals are, and we believe that we can reach them.”
BP
From 1-A
$18.7 billion agreement with the five Gulf states and the federal government over damage from the spill. Barbier’s order says BP says most local government entities have accepted the settlement with Lafourche Parish being one of them. But a handful of local governments have not accepted to settle and are continuing to fight for more funds. Among those not taking the settlement are Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana and Orange Beach in Alabama. Both locations were heavily oiled by the spill.
Plaquemines, for instance, says that the compensation offered for heavy oiling of its marshland isn’t sufficient. The parish says that about 10,000 acres of parish land was heavily oiled and that in all about 40,000 acres of coastal area was damaged by the spill. Government entities are expected to receive varying amounts in compensation according to how much damage they suffered. Jefferson Parish is expected to receive about $53 million for damage it suffered, the highest expected payout so far. Coastal areas in the parish, in particular Barataria Bay, suffered a lot of damage.
Larose man arrested for aggravated rape of a juvenile in the mid-1980s
A Larose man was arrested for the aggravated rape Danos of a juvenile, which occurred around 30 years ago. Warren Danos, 81, was arrested last week and was released after posting bond. Juvenile detectives were contacted by a woman stating she was victimized by Danos approximately 30 years ago. Through investigation, detectives learned Danos allegedly had sexual contact with the victim over the course of approximately two years, from 1984 to 1986. The victim was less than 10 years of age at the time.
Following an investigation into the matter, detectives obtained a warrant for Danos’ arrest. On Wednesday, July 22, detectives made contact with Danos who refused to

Wind slowed fishing, but Tarpon ’15 still a good time for all Gazette Sports Reports
Weekend winds were stiff, which prohibited the fishing from being as good as it could be at this time of the year. But that doesn’t mean that the 2015 International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo still wasn’t one for the ages. Event organizers, anglers and partygoers all said that the weekend-long event was a success, one filled with fun for everyone involved. Thibodaux native Brett Candies scored the big prize, weighing a 165-
pound, 14-ounce tarpon to take the title for the fish that is the namesake and crowned jewel of the rodeo. Thousands of others didn’t fish at all, but attended for the food, music and spectacle that is one of the biggest parties in Louisiana. “It’s always a great event and this year was no different, rodeo organizer Tommy Ory said. “When you’ve been doing something for so long and when you see so many returning faces every, single year, you

know that you must be doing something right. The winds stayed high throughout the rodeo, which meant that a belowaverage amount of fish were caught to be weighed. But there still were plenty keepers caught in the threedays of fishing. In the Big Game categories, Houma native Jay Voisin won the title as Best All-Around Angler after he placed first with a massive, 146-pound, 2-ounce yellowfin tuna. The fish trumped the 126-pound, 12-ounce fish that William Sigmon caught, which finished as the runner-up. Also winning in the Big Game categories were Pierre Part native Scott Settoon Jr. in blackfin tuna, Cut Off native Cullen LeBlanc in dolphin and Gonzales native Brad Duplessis in wahoo. Duplessis said winning first place at such a prestigious rodeo is something he’ll never forget. His winning wahoo weighed 52pounds, 8-ounces. “It’s a great feeling, Duplessis said. “To catch the biggest fish in something is something I’m obviously very proud of. In the Shoreline Division, Chackbay native Hunter Andras caught the biggest fish, registering a 82-pound, 12-ounce grouper to win the title. The closest battle on the scales came in Spanish mackerel where Denham Springs native Trace Day and Brusly native Cole Rivault tied – each weighing a 2-pound, 14-ounce fish. Because Day weighed his first, he takes home the first-place title. Galliano woman Priscella Duet finished third, finishing just two ounces behind. “It’s always fun to see the competition among the anglers, Ory said. “Some of these are really, really close. The crowd always gathers around the scales and people really enjoy seeing where their fish stand and who is winning on the big board. In the Inside Division, it was a family affair in many of the competitions. In croaker, Hammond’s Louis McKinney Jr., won first, second and third places, weighing one fish at 3-pounds, 6-ounces and two others and 3-pounds. In saltwater catfish, Grand Isle native Mary Jackson won the title with a 6-pound, 4-ounce fish. She also finished third with a 5-pound, 8-ounce cat. Paradis native Michael White Sr., won the title for redfish, weighing a massive 36-pound, 6-ounce fish. In
five-red stringer, Metairie native Gus Wilson won with a string that weighed a combined 36-pounds, 14ounes. He outlasted Terrebonne Sheriff Jerry Larpenter, who finished runner-up with a 36-pound, 4-ounce string. Larpenter owns the all-time rodeo record for redfish stringer. “I’ll try again next time, Larpenter said with a smile when asked of his runner-up finish. Larpenter wasn’t the only lawman smiling on the weekend. The Grand Isle Police was, too. They say that citizens cooperated to make the 2015 rodeo a hit. Police said that there weren’t any major issues with the rodeo, touting that those in attendance were well behaved – especially considering that the island lost power on Saturday night after a strong thunderstorm rolled through the area. On Saturday night, the Ying Yang Twins performed, and as-always, all of the island’s hotels, restaurants and businesses benefitted

The History of Aprons I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes halfhatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought
into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the windowsill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the windowsill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron.
