warning citizens that a critical effort to improve levee protection is still on hold. The Larose Floodwall Project, shut down by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in January, is the only area of flood protection in the 10th Ward that is substantially lower than the rest of the system. While elevations throughout the levee district have been vastly improved from a height of 18-19-ft. on the Golden Meadow end to 13-ft. in the Larose area, the Larose Floodwall is only 8-ft. above sea level in one area along the Intracoastal Waterway. In 2008, Hurricane Ike put 5-ft. of water against the wall, threatening the safety of residents inside the levee protection system. SLLD wants to increase the height to 13-ft. to match the nearby levee systems and the locks in Larose. Those plans were put on hold by a “cease and desist” order from the USACE for what they called lack of proper permits. Despite not securing the permit, SLLD had gone ahead with the FloodSee Floodwall Page 6-A

At Tuesday’s public meeting in Mathews, the Lafourche Parish Council introduced an ordinance to buy a boat launch along the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose. Councilman Daniel Lorraine’s recent assertion that the purchase of a launch on the Delta Farms Road was “pretty much a done deal” came to pass as the parish has proposed to spend $310,000 to buy the property owned by the family of Ken Mercer. The launch, which was used by many boaters to access fishing destinations along the Intracoastal Waterway in the Larose area, has been closed in recent months with a prominent “For Sale” sign fronting the property. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is using some of the property as a staging area for a project to improve flood protection in that area. That

project will end soon. Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said an agreement has been reached with the Mercer family and that the deal will be done in 30-60 days. “We plan to make this a first-class launch, with cameras and lighting,” said Cantrelle. Reggie Bagala, Director of Community Services, said that the property is in the process of being surveyed. “It’s actually eight to ten little rectangles of property. We are trying to go through the attorney now and hope to make it functional and open as soon as possible,” said Bagala. At the next public meeting on August 23, the Council will vote on the ordinance which calls for a supplemental appropriation in the 2016 parish budget from the Recreation Fund.

Baton Rouge, La. – Since expanding Medicaid eligibility to cover working adults on July 1, more than 278,000 people have gained access to preventive and primary care through the Healthy Louisiana program. With a goal of covering 375,000 people by next June, the State has reached 73 percent of its coverage target in less than 50 days. “We are improving lives in Louisiana by providing our working poor access to health coverage they’re already paying for with their federal tax dollars,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards. “Louisiana is re-

ceiving national attention for the innovative ways we’re getting citizens covered. I hear from folks every day who say that Medicaid Expansion is saving lives, and, while we have much more work to do, I couldn’t be happier with where things stand today.” According to Dr. Rebekah Gee, secretary of the Department of Health, the true measure of Healthy Louisiana will not be the number of people with health insurance, but the number of people whose lives are improving because they now have coverage.

Words of advice from a Good Ole Cajun Woman!

[Dear Aunt Ka-Me-La]

Dear Tante Camilla, What do you think about those death row inmates suing the state so they can have air conditioning in their jail cells? Signed, Hot Box Dear Hot Box: Hmph, that’s a funny name, Hot Box. The people are naming their kids all sorts of weird things now-adays. Caillou and Co-Co Puffs. I heard of a boy named Conson the other day. Can you believe that? Tante Camilla is just pulling your leg about that one, beb. Anyway, bonjour mes amis. This is Tante Camilla ready to give you some advice. I like that question, me. So venez ici and écoutez. When I read that article in the Lafourche Gazette Wednesday about how them people on death row are suing to get some air conditioner because being too hot makes them more sick, mais, it made my blood boil, me.

Too hot? Too hot? Let me tell you what’s gonna be too hot. Where they going, beb, that’s gonna be hot, hot. Let me tell you something else, we didn’t have no air conditioner in my days. And even after it first came out, daddy didn’t buy one because he said that cold air would make momma malade. My grand-mére only had three toes left between both feet because of the diabetes and she didn’t have no air conditioner. This is what I think they need to do. They on death row, right. Well, if they don’t like sitting in the heat on death row then let them sit in the electric chair for a little while. I bet they won’t complain about how hot it is in their jail cell then. All these fancy pants attorneys and judges need to be passed a callotte. Ain’t nobody got no common sense no more. That’s what’s the matter with this world. Well, that’s all for now, I guess. When I get another question you’ll get another answer. -Tante Camilla

Appraisal firm sets value of former Six Flags theme park Hospital 1st year: 2200 staffers, 230K clinic, ER visits

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — University Medical Center New Orleans says its first year in operation included more than 237,000 visits by patients and employment of more than 2,240 full-time staffer members. A news release Tuesday says its staff dealt with 155,835 clinic visits, 81,330 emergency visits, and 11,736 admissions over the first 365 days. The 446-bed hospital opened Aug. 1, 2015, with the transfer of 131 patients from its predecessor, Interim LSU Hospital. Hospital officials say that the staff has worked with 5,000 residents, medical students and trainees. ___

Governor marks $10M for I-10 ramp to future airport terminal

KENNER, La. (AP) — Officials say Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration has come up with $10 million to start work on a flyover ramp that will link Interstate 10 to the new terminal under construction at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner. State officials tell local media outlets the full ramp project is expected to cost another $90 million, which has yet to be secured. When it’s done, the new flyover ramp will serve as the main entrance for what’s been dubbed the North Terminal, a nearly $1 billion expansion of the New Orleans-owned airport. The $10 million announced Tuesday will pay for design work, rights of way and other expenses. Crews began work at the new terminal site almost six months ago. ___

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Industrial Development Board has released the findings of the appraisal group selected to value the shuttered Six Flags park. Local media outlets reports the McEnery Company of New Orleans submitted its findings to the board on Aug. 4 and fixed the value of the former amusement park at $3 million. An additional 65 acres of undeveloped land that comes with the property is valued at $260,000. The Orleans Parish Assessors Office currently assesses the value of the site at more than $51 million. The appraisal report released Tuesday said the IDB could continue renting it as a movie filming location, list the property for sale, put it up for auction or donate it to the city. ___

Doctor to return library book overdue from the 1970s

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Florida doctor is returning a long-overdue book that he checked out from a West Virginia library and donating $500. WCHS-TV reports that as a child in the mid-1970s, Dr. Michael Kelly checked out “So You Want To Be a Doctor” from the Kanawha County Library. Kelly, a graduate of Charleston High School, is now a successful plastic surgeon in Miami and owns Miami Plastic Surgery. Kelly told the news station that he recently found the book in a bookshelf at his home and is “extremely embarrassed” that it has been checked out for so long. Library officials say Kelly will return the book at 1 p.m. Friday, along with a check to show gratitude for his success. Kelly says he hopes his story will inspire the children of Charleston to follow their dreams. Information from: WCHS-TV, http://www.wchstv.com ___

State to resume publication of Louisiana Conservationist

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A once-popular outdoor

magazine for Louisiana’s wildlife and fisheries enthusiasts is returning to print this fall. For decades since its start in 1917, the Louisiana Conservationist was mailed to the home of hunting and fishing license holders across the state. But publication stopped five years ago under thenGov. Bobby Jindal’s administration. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced Thursday it was resuming printing of the magazine. Gov. John Bel Edwards, in a statement, said the Louisiana Conservationist is “an educational asset” and “treasured portrayal of Louisiana’s wondrous outdoors.” When it resumes, the return to print will be on a smaller scale. It will be done by existing Wildlife and Fisheries staff, printed quarterly and available for free at the department’s field offices around the state, rather than mailed to homes.

To reverse damage of sitting, take a brisk, hour-long walk MARIA CHENG AP Medical Writer

LONDON (AP) — If you spend all day sitting, then you might want to schedule some time for a brisk walk — just make sure you can spare at least an hour. Scientists analyzing data from more than 1 million people found that it takes about 60 to 75 minutes of “moderate intensity” exercise to undo the damage of sitting for at least eight hours a day. Not exercising and sitting all day is as dangerous as being obese or smoking, they found. And the added risk of parking yourself in front of a television for 5 hours or more a day after sitting at the office is so high even the hour of exercise is not enough to reverse the damage. “We cannot stress enough the importance of getting exercise, whether it’s getting out for a walk at lunchtime, going for a run in the morning or cycling to work,” said Ulf Ekelund of the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences in Norway, one of the study’s authors, in a statement. It has been long suspected that sitting a lot, at work or at home, is not healthy. Previous studies have found that prolonged sitting can raise the chances of heart disease, various cancers and an earlier death. In the new research, experts combed through 13 papers with data on factors including how long people spend sitting, their physical activity levels and their television-watching habits. The majority of studies included people older than age 45. All except one were done in the U.S., Western Europe and Australia. Researchers found that people with the highest levels of moderate physical activity — 60 to 75 minutes daily— erased the higher risk of death linked to being seated for

more than eight hours a day. But even that exercise regime was not enough to counter the hazards of also watching more than five hours of television a day. The study’s conclusions suggest that current guidelines from the World Health Organization — which recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day — may not be enough to offset the dangers of sitting. The paper was published online Wednesday in the journal Lancet. Lars Bo Andersen, who co-authored an accompanying commentary, called the new research “very convincing,” explaining that too much sitting increases the risk of problems including diabetes and heart disease because it can make insulin levels spike and might slow the body’s metabolism. Andersen said watching lots of television was probably even worse than sitting at the office all day because it likely includes other unhealthy habits. “A lot of people don’t just watch TV, they eat fatty snacks at the same time,” said Andersen, of Sogn and Fjordane University College in Norway. Andersen said some cultures make it easier than others to squeeze in an hour of exercise every day, noting that in Denmark and much of Scandinavia, about half of all people either cycle or walk to work. But he said that getting the recommended amount of physical activity shouldn’t be overly arduous and doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym for an intense workout. “If you are walking and can feel yourself getting a little warm and your breathing is a little heavier, that’s enough,” he said. “You don’t have to be sweaty and out of breath to get the benefits.”

Wedding gift

Martha had a wedding to go to and needed a wedding gift, but she procrastinated and ended up having to come up with something a couple days before the wedding. She thought about it and finally said, “Aha, I have that monogrammed silver tray from my wedding that I never use. I’ll just take it to a silversmith and

have him remove my monogram and put hers on it. Voila, one cheap wedding present.” Happy with her idea, she took it to the silversmith and asked him to remove her monogram and put the new one on. The silversmith took a look at the tray, shook his head and said, “Lady, this can only be done so many times!”

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Henri Nouwen on the incarnation, forgiveness, trust and God’s love Last week, I gave my readers an overall view of the spiritual writer and author Fr. Henri Nouwen. This week I would like to go deeper into his insights and spirituality. Nouwen on God becoming human. “I think that we have hardly thought through the immense implications of the mystery of the incarnation. Where is God? God is where we are weak, vulnerable, small and dependent. God is where the poor are, the hungry, the disabled, the mentally ill, the elderly, the powerless. “How can we come to know God when our focus is elsewhere – on success, influence, and power? I increasingly believe that our faithfulness will depend on our willingness to go where there is brokenness, loneliness, and human need . . . Often we do not know that the Christ child is within us. When we discover him, we can truly rejoice.” On forgiveness. “To forgive another person

wall project and was about halfway to completion when the order was received. Curole noted that investigation has proven that water actually seeped under the wall during Hurricane Ike because the CORPS’ sheet piles are only down to a minus 12-ft. “That’s what happened in the 17th Street Canal failure,” he said. That failure caused extensive flooding in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. SLLD’s plans call for sheet piles to be driven to a depth of 46-ft. “If we were allowed, we would have the wall in place in one month,” said Curole. “I just want y’all to be aware we know we have a bad spot there. We know the problem and know how to stop it, but don’t have permission. It’s not a good situation,” he said. At a recent levee district meeting, Curole said SLLD is exploring several options to resolve the issue. Senator David Vitter and other members of our congressional delegation have had meetings with the Corps in Washington to expedite the permit. Also, SLLD has enlisted the aid of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to push the permit issue. Curole said his board is even looking into using the court system to help resolve the issue.

“Today we are measuring enrollment. But, we will soon start to look at how many more women are getting mammograms and lessening their risk of breast cancer. We’ll look at the number of people who can see their primary care doctor instead of an emer-

from the heart is an act of liberation. We set that person free from the negative bonds that exist between us. We say, ‘I no longer hold your offense against you.’ But there is more. We also free ourselves from the burden of being the ‘offended one.’ “When we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us or, worse, pull them as a heavy load. The great temptation is to cling in anger to our enemies and then define ourselves as being offended and wounded by them. Forgiveness, therefore, liberates not only the other but also us. It is the way to the freedom of the children of God.” “So forgiveness has two sides: giving and receiving. Although at first sight giving seems harder, it often appears that we are not able to offer forgiveness to others because we have not been able fully to receive it. Only as people who have accepted forgiveness can we find the inner freedom to give it. Why is receiving forgiveness so difficult? “It is very hard to say, ‘Without your forgiveness I am still bound to what happened between us. Only you can set me free.’ That requires not only a confession that we have hurt somebody but also the humility to acknowledge our dependency on others. Only when we can receive forgiveness, can we give it.”

Some of the key enrollment statistics as of August 10, 2016 include: - Total Enrollment: 278,031. - Females make up about two-thirds of the total enrollment: 182,832 females, 95,199 males. - More than 111,400 new enrollees are between the ages of 25 and 39. - The three parishes with the highest total enrollment are Orleans (42,354), Jefferson (33,700) and East Baton Rouge (22,257). - 22,643 SNAP recipients have enrolled. - 66,423 people have enrolled either in-person, online or by telephone. - Average weekday traffic on the Healthy Louisiana website is greater than 4,000 visitors per day with more than 400 online applications completed daily. - Average weekday call volume is in excess of 7,900 calls. The Department of Health will provide additional enrollment statistics as they become available. For more information, including how to enroll, visit Healthy.la.gov.

Golden Meadow to establish a reliable regional water system that will serve local business needs.” This EDA investment will provide sewerage in an area affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike that contains about 150 residential and commercial properties. The investment will help to create a sustainable wastewater treatment system that will support a healthier environment for the region’s workforce.

Nouwen on trust. “Trust is the basis of life. Without trust, no human being can live. Trapeze artists offer a beautiful image of this. Flyers have to trust their catchers. They can do the most spectacular doubles, triples, or quadruples, but what finally makes their performances spectacular are the catchers who are there for them at the right time in

what we do or say, on our looks or intelligence, on our success or popularity. God’s love for us existed before we were born and will exist after we have died. God’s love is from eternity to eternity and is not bound to any time-related events or circumstances. “Does that mean that God does not care what we do or say? No, because

the right place. “Much of our lives is flying. It is wonderful to fly in the air free as a bird, but when God isn’t there to catch us, all our flying comes to nothing. Let’s trust in the Great Catcher.” On God’s love. “God’s love is unconditional. God does not say, ‘I love you, if . . . ’ There are no ifs in God’s heart. God’s love for us does not depend on
