Elmer’s Island closure extended due to recent weather delays
Recent weather conditions have made dredging in the Gulf of Mexico unfavorable. These unexpected weather delays have extended the Elmer’s Island closure by 8 days to August 30th. The slow-moving weather system that has caused unprecedented flooding in parts of our state is also responsible for these construction delays.

Several local drop-off sites still accepting donations for flood victims
One of the most beautiful aspects of Cajun life is how individuals band together to help those in need. Though Louisiana has taken a catastrophic hit, stories of hope, love and compassion have shined through the bleakness. With the Lafourche area spared from rising flood waters that pushed our brother and sister Cajuns out of their homes in other parts of the state, natives in the southern part of the state jumped into action organizing donation drop off sites, donation hauls and even rescue missions with their own boats. Most websites and organizations say that the main need at this moment is for water, food (including infant formula), toiletries and personal hygiene products (adult and infant) and cleaning supplies. Some shelters are only taking certain items as they are being bombarded with too much of one thing, such as clothing. Listed below are some of the other supplies sought for the thousands of people who have taken refuge in shelters throughout the state:

In February, more than 65 years after its construction, the Larose Fire Dept. building was demolished to make way for a new state-of-the-art 3,500 sq. ft. fire station which will house Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 (LPFD3) personnel 24/7. The two-story building, established in 1948 at 12595 E. Main St. in Larose, alongside East 6th Street, housed one fire engine and the equipment needed for the volunteers to fight fires in the Larose area. “It was hard seeing something that has been a local landmark for so many years being destroyed, but it has become inadequate compared to modern standards. The only fire truck that fit in the old building is one from 1982. The height of the building was about six feet too short for newer fire trucks,” said LPFD3 Asst. Fire Chief Kully Griffin. While the new firehouse was expected to open in late October or early November, the new station should be open by the beginning of next year, according to those involved with the project. The metal frame has gone up for the new building, and Fire Chief Freddy Guidry said the siding

has spent three nights in two different shelters since her family fled the flooding at their Baton Rouge apartment complex. And she doesn’t know how many more nights they will be sleeping on cots inside the downtown arena where hundreds sought shelter. Taylor probably could stay with relatives in White Castle, a town about 30 miles west of Louisiana’s capital city, but three of her kids are enrolled in Baton Rouge schools that could reopen next week. “This is where I live. I need to be home,” she said. Taylor is one of thousands of people across southern Louisiana displaced by catastrophic flooding and now struggling with where to live. An additional evacuation recommendation was made in Vermilion Parish. Gueydan Fire Chief Evans Bourque told The Associated Press early Thursday that residents in about 60 to 70 homes in an area outside the levee system there were being urged to evacuate amid rising water. Bourque said he did not know how many people the evacuation included but said it was less than 100. See Plight Page 3-A

Parish gives helping hand in relief efforts
Mathews, LA – Lafourche Parish Government has played its part in relief efforts to assist neighboring parishes in the wake of the devastating floods last weekend. This week, in conjunction with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, the City of Thibodaux and the Good Samaritan Food Bank, several trailers full of supplies were collected and delivered to Ascension and Livingston Parishes. Another delivery of goods to Lafayette Parish was made on Friday. “All these donations and deliveries were the result of generous giving by untold numbers of individuals, businesses, schools and organizations throughout Lafourche Parish. Chère Tante Ca
Words of advice from a Good Ole Cajun Woman!
[Dear Aunt Ka-Me-La]
Dear Tante Camilla, My grandkids, who are now 12 and 16, never come to visit me anymore. I just don’t understand why my daughter-in-law doesn’t make them come over out of respect. Do you have any advice on how I can talk to her about this? Signed, Lonesome Gram Dear Lonesome Gram: You must be a Texian with that last name or from the West Bank. I never heard of no Grams down here. Anyway, bonjour mes amis. This is Tante Camilla ready to give you some advice. So venez ici and écoutez. First of all, beb, getting along with daughter-in-laws can be tricky, so this is what you gotta do. You call your son to come over to eat some of his favorite food for dinner when he takes a little break from work, maybe cook a good gumbo or some sticky chicken, something you know his wife can’t cook good like you. Maybe a ragu patat with some butcher sausage. I think I saw it was on sale in the sale papers. Chére bête, I’m starting to get hungry now just thinking about that. I might have to eat me a Little Debbie cake after while with a cold glass of milk. Ah-bain, when he comes over, you take your Gazette and roll it up real tight and put it in the pocket of your housecoat. After you fix his food and he
sits down, you come up behind him and ta-gow. You rap him across the head real hard like he was a big ole’ muskrat. Let me tell you why: He was the one that you gave birth to and took care of all those years, not his wife. I was lucky to have a good mother-in-law, but my cousin Maybelline, phew Lawd, her mother-in-law was mean, mean to her. So don’t be like that. You tell him that he needs to start picking you up to go to the baybay’s baseball games or dance recitals or whatever they’re in. Because look, at 12 and 16, they never home anymore. You gonna have to chase them to see them. That’s just how it is now-adays. It’s not like the good ole’ days when everybody would go to mamére and papére’s house after church
on Sunday and play with all the cousins. People just don’t have time for all that. So if you want to see the grand baybays, then you gonna have to put on a nice camisole and make your son take you with them. Well, that’s all for now, I guess. When I get another question you’ll get another answer. -Tante Camilla

Plight From 1-A
With an estimated 40,000 homes damaged by deadly flooding, Louisiana could be looking at its biggest housing crunch since the miserable, bumbling aftermath of Hurricane Katrina a decade ago. For the Baton Rouge area, it was a blow on top of what has already been a tough summer starting with the shooting death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling on July 5. The death of Sterling, a black man, at the hands of two white police officers incited widespread protests in which nearly 200 people were arrested. Then on July 17, a lone gunman shot and killed three law enforcement officers and wounded three others outside a Baton Rouge convenience store. The suspect, Gavin Long, an Army veteran from Kansas City, Missouri, was killed by police. The dead officers all had lived in the area of Denham Springs, a quiet bedroom community near Baton Rouge. Then the rains hit. People now are staying in shelters, bunking with friends or relatives, or sleeping in trailers on their front lawns. Others unable or unwilling to leave their homes are living amid mud and the ever-present risk of mold in the steamy August heat. Many victims will need an extended place to stay while they rebuild. Countless others didn’t have flood insurance and may not have the means to repair their homes. “I got nowhere else to go,” said Thomas Lee, 56, who ekes out a living as a

drywall hanger — a skill that will come in handy. His sodden furniture is piled curbside and the drywall in his rented house is puckering, but Thomas still plans to keep living there, sleeping on an air mattress. Exactly how many will need temporary housing is unclear, but state officials are already urging landlords to allow short-term leases and encouraging people to rent out any empty space available. Terri Ricks, deputy secretary for the Department of Children and Family Services, which helps organize sheltering efforts in parishes, said the state is talking with parishes about possibly running a long-term shelter in the region if needed to give people a place to stay while they repair and rebuild. “Nobody wants to do a long-term shelter,” she said. “We want to get people in a more permanent situation.” The Federal Emergency Management Agency, whose very name became a punchline during Katrina, said it will look into lining up rental properties for those left homeless and will consider using temporary housing units. But FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate gave assurances that the temporary units won’t be the old FEMA travel trailers — a reference to the ones brought in after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that were found to have toxic levels of formaldehyde. The flooding that struck the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas left at least 13 people dead. More than 30,000 have been rescued, and at least 70,000 have registered for federal disaster assistance. At the height, 11,000 people were in shelters, though that figured dropped to 6,000 by Wednesday. Those with flood insurance will be in a much better place to begin rebuilding — but there won’t be many of them. Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said it was shocking that only 12 percent of the homes in hard-hit Baton Rouge were covered by flood insurance, and only 14 percent in Lafayette. Donelon, however, said he understands why the state’s “large population of working poor folks” wouldn’t pay for flood coverage when lenders tell them it’s not a requirement. Many flood victims

said they weren’t required to have flood insurance and didn’t have it, since nothing remotely like this had ever happened before. One of those people was David Ellis. He and his wife closed on their new house in a Livingston Parish subdivision last Thursday afternoon. It started flooding the very next day, water ultimately rising above three feet inside his home. Like many of his neighbors, Ellis didn’t have flood insurance. He said he was told he didn’t need it. Friends have launched an online fundraising campaign to help repair the new home. “I hate asking for help, but having somebody do that for us is awesome,” he said. ___ Kunzelman and Deslatte reported from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

you to them for again showing our great spirit as a parish and our willingness to always help a neighbor in need,” said Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle. Cantrelle specifically thanked Homeland Security Director Josh Champagne and the entire Office of Emergency Preparedness staff for coordinating the donation and delivery effort and to Arabie Trucking and Gaubert Oil for providing the transportation to get the goods to their locations. “We have great corpo-
rate citizens who are always ready to lend a hand at a moment’s notice. Thank you to our ‘Cajun Cavalry’ for showing true South Louisiana spirit,” he said. Cantrelle also thanked Parish Administrator Don Matherne, Public Works Director James Barnes and their staff for their efforts in monitoring the possibility of backwater flooding in the Choupic area. “We were and still are proactive and took steps to address the waters should they rise. So far, everything looks good in that area and we will continue to watch it closely,” said Cantrelle. “This week, the unwavering spirit of our people in stepping up so generously to donate in times of need and our employees who also step forward in these times doing countless tasks show the true spirit of our people, and how if we all work together, can make great things happen for our parish,” said Cantrelle.

quired.” Because of the changes, Guidry expects the station to cost a little over $1 million, paid for with tax dollars. Previous estimates put the cost at just under $1 million. Fire District 3, Lafourche’s only paid fire department, was established in 1959 and took over all fire departments in the district’s boundaries. Its coverage area runs from 2 miles north of the Intracoastal Waterway to just before Grand Isle and also includes the Lafourche section of the BourgLarose Highway. Employees work in three shifts, living at the fire stations for 24 hours at a time. “There are so many different situations that our firefighters are involved in and trained for; it’s much more than just putting out fires. Last year we took 770 calls. That averages to two emergency calls each day,” said Guidry. The new 3,500-squarefoot station will house four firefighters at a time and include living quarters and two trucks. It will have a housing unit for the four on-duty firemen and a large garage that will house a ladder truck and a pump truck as well as equipment needed for any given situation. Ben Thompson, project manager for Thomassie Construction, said he expects the building to be complete by the end of the year.

Each year the LPFD3 holds an open house in the fall so people can view their equipment, meet personnel and learn about fire prevention. In the last few years, anywhere from 600 – 1200 people have attended the open houses. “We’re here to keep residents in our district safe. We hold a strong sense of community and willingness to help, plus running into a burning building and saving lives is a feeling like no other,” said Guidry. PRAYERS
HURRICANE PRAYER To avert storms & hurricanes Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen ______________________ PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going to battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves shall never die a sudden death or be drowned or shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail so be sure you really want what you ask. G.O. ______________________

Nungesser calls for private donations and volunteers, creates portal Wednesday, August 21, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser agreed to Gov. Edwards’ request to lead the statewide effort to coordinate private donations and volunteers throughout the state and between parishes. Nungesser’s office has created a portal for residents and organizations to register and offer donations and to volunteer in support of recovery efforts throughout Louisiana. In addition to food and volunteers, many organizations are in need of monetary donations and links have been added to www.VolunteerLouisiana.go v to those organizations in need.
The Lt. Governor’s Office has reached out to each parish to begin the coordination effort and determine needs. Below is the information for food donations and volunteers: Food: Any group or corporation intending to donate, cook, or serve food can email donate@crt.la.gov and they will be connected to the parish nearest them or with the most need. Volunteer: Any individual or group wanting to volunteer can go to www.VolunteerLouisiana.go v and register. Following registration, the individual will be connected with an organization in need of volunteers.
Surfin’ the is comprised of cute, funny and at times heartwarming stories and photos that are found circulating the internet. Oftentimes there are no known authors of the material. The Lafourche Gazette does not take credit for the writings in this column. We’re publishing it to simply put a smile on our readers’ faces.
Paying it forward
A young pastor was sitting in a restaurant eating lunch. He opened a letter he’d just received that morning from his mom. As he opened it a twenty-dollar bill fell out. He thought to himself, Thanks, Mom, I sure needed that right now. As he finished his meal, he noticed a beggar outside on the sidewalk leaning against the light post. Thinking that the poor man could probably use the twenty dollars more than he, he crossed out the names on the envelope and

The man picked it up and read the message and smiled. The next day, as the pastor enjoyed his meal, the same man tapped him on the shoulder and handed him a big wad of bills. Surprised, the young pastor asked him what that was for. The man replied, “This is your half of the winnings. Persevere came in first in the fourth race at the track yesterday and paid thirty to one.”

“Our culture is deeper than these floodwaters and I have never been prouder to be a Louisianian than when neighbor was helping neighbor these past few days. Just as we have done in previous disasters, the people of Louisiana will stand strong and rebuild,” said Lt. Governor Nungesser. “We stand united today in our call to all citizens of Louisiana and America to continue to provide support and aid our brothers and sisters in need.” This is a major incident which will require lots of volunteer efforts as well as financial support. Twentyfive parishes in Louisiana

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Baptism makes us children of God and part of the heavenly family
Some people assume that once they are baptized, then they can just sail along for the rest of their lives on the grace of their baptism. This would surely make baptism into some kind of magical event, instead of being the faith event that it is. Baptism brings us into the community of faith. We become children of God. We become part of God’s family – God is our Father, Jesus is our brother, the Holy Spirit guides us through life. As we grow in faith, God expects us to give some energy to the faith we have received. If we stop nourishing it, our faith may die. If we see our faith as a rigid and motionless reality, something that does not move or grow, then everything becomes quite simple. All we need to do is get ourselves baptized, carry out our basic religious obligations, sit back, and wait for the rewards to pour in. We hope to enjoy a sense of peace in this life, and eternal happiness in the next. This is the image of faith is similar to money that we deposit in the bank. Once it is in the bank, we can forget about it until we need it. It gains interest for us, and we do
not have to do anything with it. This is the choice of those living a faith life that is shallow and superficial, with no real depth. This kind of faith seeks only the comfort and security that come from religion. It avoids the hard questions of life and is frightened if anyone challenges or questions any aspect of it. This is not the kind of faith we find in the lives of the people in the Bible. In the Scriptures, faith is pictured as a difficult journey to unknown places. God called Abraham to set out on a journey to a place to which he had never been. His only guide would be God. He needed to spend plenty of energy. He had to be alert as he moved from place to place. The hardships and insecurity of travel in those ancient times were well known. Being on a journey was not anyone’s idea of a vacation. You might not come back alive! Danger was all around. On such a journey you could not afford to be distracted. We fight against distractions by being focused. Whether we are driving a car or walking on the side of a highway, or operating some dangerous machinery, we all have to practice the art of being focused. Without it, we can quickly fall into dangerous and perhaps fatal situations. Having a focused faith involves seeing the faith implications in every human situation. We shouldn’t let our life in the world distract us from God’s plan for us. Faith is belief. Faith is trust. Faith is living lives that reflect our belief and

our trust. Faith requires that we be attentive to life and to all that life brings our way. Our faith believes that God is to be found anywhere and at any time. A person with this kind of faith senses that his or her response to every person and every situation is ultimately a faith response. This is so because he or she believes that God is made known through the ordinary events of life. Maybe a neighbor is in

need, a family member in distress, a threat to the environment, an obvious injustice – all these things require our ready response as people who trust that God is present everywhere. When we make a response to these persons and situations, we do so with a belief and a trust that we are being sent by God who supports us as we reach out in love. God will give us the grace we need to overcome any situation.
