Driver succumbs to injuries sustained in head-on crash
HoumaThibodaux area loses 700 jobs for month

Oil industry downturn the reason
Golden Meadow, LA – Shortly after 5:00 a.m. Monday morning, Troopers from Troop C responded to a head-on crash involving injuries on LA 1 near Celestin Drive in Golden Meadow. Both drivers, Taylor Fontenot and Dalton Creppel, sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Creppel, 38-years old of Golden Meadow, later died from his injuries. Preliminary investigation by Troopers revealed Fontenot was traveling north on LA 1 in a 2015 Ford F-250. Creppel was southbound on LA 1 in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. For reasons still under investigation, Fontenot crossed the center line and struck Creppel’s vehicle head-on. Creppel was transported to Lady of the sea General Hospital where he would later succumb to his injuries. Fontenot was transferred to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment. Water fee to increase beginning Jan. 1
Lafourche Parish residents will see a slight increase in their water bills at the beginning of the year. During this year’s regular session, the state Legislature authorized an increase in the Safe Drinking Water Fee beginning on Jan. 1. The current fee will be increased from $3.20 per connection per year for community water systems to $12 per
Both the number of jobs and the number of employed individuals in Louisiana dropped in July, according to seasonally-adjusted data released recently by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Houma-Thibodaux area alone lost 700 jobs last month as a two-year oil-industry downturn continues, new state figures show. The jobless rate for the metro area, comprised of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, was 7.2 percent, down slightly from 7.4 percent in June and up from 5.8 percent a year ago, the Louisiana Workforce Commission reported. “The Louisiana Workforce Commission is working tirelessly in coordination with our partners across the state to put people to work in fulfilling, family-sustaining careers,” said LWC Executive Director Ava Dejoie. In July, the area was down 3,800 jobs compared to a year ago, the figures show. But compared to July 2014, when crude prices began the decline that has decimated jobs locally and throughout the global oil industry, Houma-Thibodaux has lost 8,500 jobs. The number of nonfarm jobs in the area now totals 93,300. In July 2014, that number was 101,800. For the 18th straight month, oilfield jobs were down compared to a year earlier. However, numbers held steady in some oilfield job categories between June and July. See Labor Page 3-A

connection per year. This will result in a $1 increase for all customers. The water system will keep 5 percent of the increased fee. Half of the current fee of $3.20, or $1.60, will be collected for July to December. Lafourche Parish Water District services approximately 32,000 customers with an average monthly bill around $27, officials said.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Hunters and other sportsmen won’t have to pay sales tax when they buy guns, ammunition and an array of outdoor supplies. Louisiana’s annual “Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday” runs from Friday through Sunday. The legislature created the sales tax holiday in 2009 to exempt eligible purchases of guns, ammunition and hunting supplies from all state and local sales taxes. However, as amended during the 2016 First Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature, the state sales tax exemption for 2016 and 2017 is now two percent, meaning eligible purchases are subject to only three percent state sales tax instead of the full five percent. Eligible purchases remain fully exempt from all local sales taxes. Items exempt sales taxes include hunting accessories, firearms, ammunition, animal feed, clothes, binoculars, knives, decoys and other outdoor items.

Local woman urges others to volunteer for Relay for Life
I am a volunteer for The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life events in Lafourche Parish. I am proud to not only raise money, but also to donate my time and money to Saving Lives, Preventing Cancer, and Finding Cures. It’s something that’s bigger than all of us. In 2016, a combined total of $318,973.72 was raised in Lafourche Parish. It is amazing what that money will do. The following is a brief listing (not all) of what your dollars can provide: $25 - free access to 24-hour information and support for one person via the phone, email, and online chats. (Our cancer information specialists fulfilled more than 800,000 requests from people needing information and answers via 1-800-2272345, email, and online chats each year.) $50 - five rides to and from treatment for a cancer patient $100 - a breast cancer patient with one-on-one peer support from a breast cancer survivor. $150 - a trained patient navigator to a cancer patient so they can understand their diagnosis and get the help they need. $500 - a cancer patient and their caregiver five nights of free lodging at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge when having to travel away from home for treatment. We will be kicking off our 2017 Relay For Life season soon, and we need your help. You are never too young, or too old. We have volunteers from ages 5 to 95 – at the young age of 76, I can tell you it is a blessing and very rewarding. There
are jobs for everyone, even if you cannot leave your home or can only give a few minutes a week or month. If I can do it, you can do it! Sheriff: Man confesses in killings of 2 Mississippi nuns
DURANT, Miss. (AP) — A man suspected in the slayings of two nuns found dead in their Mississippi home confessed to the killings, a sheriff said Saturday, in the latest twist to a crime that has horrified people in the small communities where the women served. Rodney Earl Sanders, 46, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, was arrested and charged in the deaths of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said late Friday. Both women were 68. Willie March, the sheriff of Holmes County where the killings occurred, said Saturday he had been briefed by police from the town where the killings occurred and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officials who took part in Sanders’ interrogation. Sanders confessed in the interrogation to the killings and gave no reason for the crimes, March said. ___
With help from goat, wily Clydesdale goes on lam for 5 days
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) —
A dwarf billy goat gave new meaning to the word “scapegoat” when he busted out a surprisingly slippery Clydesdale that went on the lam in California for several days. The nearly 1-ton horse named Budweiser, who goes by “Buddy,” was safely wrangled back into his pen Sunday in the Santa Cruz Mountains on California’s Central Coast. The goat named Lancelot knows how to butt open the stable gate, and did just that Wednesday, letting his best friend escape, owner Tamara Schmitz told the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper. Another Clydesdale, Harry, also fled and was nabbed in a meadow the next day. But Buddy is more wary and wily, Schmitz said. “Buddy’s very elusive,” she said. “He’s not like other horses. He’s not attracted by meadows and other horses. He can stay hidden.” That made him very hard to find. He eluded volunteers from around the Santa Cruz area for five days, with evidence like tracks and loud snorts suggesting he was as far as 3 miles away. The owners even trotted out Lancelot and Harry to try to lure back Buddy, but he didn’t fall for it. They just hoped the horse would stay away from Highway 17, a busy and dangerous road running through the area. A pair of searchers on horseback finally found Buddy hiding amid man-
zanita shrubs Sunday. “When we got him back in the pen, he was particularly frisky and playful and happy,” Schmitz said. “I think he was glad to be back.” ___

During questioning, Spano admitted to having sexual contact with the victim. He was arrested and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with Third Degree Rape. His bond is set at $150,000, and he has been ordered to stay away from the victim.

Driver From 1-A
Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected as being a factor in the crash; however, standard toxicology tests are pending. Troopers want to remind the public to avoid distracted driving and always buckle up. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.

Labor From 1-A
Locally, oil and gas exploration and production jobs totaled 6,800 in July, the same as June but down 1,200, or 15 percent, from a year ago, according to the report. Oilfield service jobs rose by 100 for the month to total 5,900, but that was still down 1,100, about 16 percent, compared to a year ago. Another oilfield-related category called “support activities for transportation,” which includes mostly jobs in the area’s offshore maritime industry, employed 5,500 people in July, down 100 for the month and 600 for the year. Administrative and support services, which also includes mostly oilfield-related workers, employed 3,500 people locally in July, down 100 for the month and 300 for the year. Among other figures in Friday’s report: — Louisiana’s unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in July, down from 7 percent in June and up from 6.6 percent a year ago. — The U.S. jobless rate in July, 5.1 percent, held steady for the month and was down from 5.6 percent a year ago. — Terrebonne’s jobless rate was 7.4 percent in
July, down from 7.7 percent in June and up from 6.1 percent a year ago. — Lafourche posted a 6.9 percent unemployment rate last month, down from 7.0 in June but up from 5.5 percent in July 2015. — Alexandria gained 100 jobs over the month and 200 jobs over the year. — Baton Rouge gained 600 jobs over the month and 9,500 jobs over the year. — Houma lost 700 jobs over the month and 3,800 jobs over the year. — Lake Charles gained 700 jobs over the month and 3,100 jobs over the year. — Monroe gained 100 jobs over the month and 500 jobs over the year. — New Orleans lost 300 jobs over the month and gained 3,000 jobs over the year. The BLS does not report seasonally-adjusted data for Hammond, Lafayette and Shreveport because of changes in those areas’ demographics. Not-seasonally-adjusted data for July showed: — Hammond lost 200 jobs over the month and was unchanged over the year. — Lafayette lost 1,600 jobs over the month and 7,300 jobs over the year. — Shreveport gained 500 jobs over the month and 300 jobs over the year.

Trojans trump Tarpons in jamboree showdown Gazette Sports Reports
Jamborees are often sloppy. But the Central Lafourche football team bucked that trend Friday night at the Thibodaux High School Jamboree, scoring a two-touchdown win over a rival it hasn’t had much luck against in the past several years. The Trojans scored a 23-9 exhibition victory over South Lafourche, using crisp, consistent offensive play to outscore the Tarpons 14-0 in the second half. Trojans coach Keith Menard said he’s happy with how his team played – especially considering the lack of practice time the team throughout the summer has had because of inclement weather. “Offensively, I’m not going to lie – I thought we were pretty darn good,” Menard said. “I was pleased with our offensive line. They opened up holes and did well against their front. We have skill guys. They made some plays tonight, and we’re really

happy with how poised (Jake) Allemand was at quarterback. All-in-all, we’re happy. There’s things we need to fix, but we’re happy.” The Trojans dug themselves out of an early rut to secure the victory. South Lafourche got the ball first and drove straight down the field for points – a long drive capped by a touchdown run from quarterback Jaydon Cheramie. After a successful extra point from Arnold Nguyen, the Tarpons held a 7-0 lead. But the Trojans battled back. Central got points of their own in their first possession when Allemand hit receiver David Robinson for a 24-yard touchdown strike. After a failed 2-point conversion, the Trojans trailed 7-6. “That score was big for us,” Menard said. “The guys battled back and stayed calm and kept their heads in the game.” For the rest of the first half, South Lafourche fought a two-pronged battle. Of course, they battled the Trojans, but they also locked horns with themselves in the form of penalties. South Lafourche committed a litany of first-half penalties on Friday, which often negated large gains and stalled what seemed like prosperous-looking drives. Tarpons coach Brandon Nowlin said the team had more than 100 yards of penalties in the jamboree – a number, which the coach said, isn’t conducive to success at any level. “When the guys watch
the film and see how successful and dominant they can be if they just get out of their own way, I think it will sink in,” Nowlin said. “Give credit to Central Lafourche. They played well. Coach Menard does a great job. But we just gave them too much help. Every time we got something going, we’d have to take a few steps backward. We just don’t have the focus we need yet.” Before halftime, each team had its moments. The Tarpons forced a punt, then scored a safety after the Trojans snapped the ball over their punters head and out of the back of the end zone, which gave South Lafourche a 9-6 edge. But after the special teams mistake, the Trojans stiffened, stopping the Tarpons after the safety and then driving down the field to tie the game on a 37yard field goal by kicker Thomas Loupe. Menard said the sequence after the safety showed toughness in his team. “We never buckled,” Menard said. “After the safety, this entire thing could have gone in the opposite direction. But we finished the half strong, collected ourselves and then came back out with a bang.” That the Trojans did. Central Lafourche controlled the play in the final quarter of the exhibition, taking a 15-9 lead when Nelton Allen capped an 11play drive with a short touchdown run. After forcing a punt, Allen struck again, catching an 8-yard touchdown pass from Allemand, which, after a 2-point conversion, put the Trojans up 23-9. South Lafourche battled back late and tried to tighten the scoreboard, but a lengthy drive stopped short of pay dirt when Cheramie scrambled on a fourth down play and was tackled at the 3-yard-line – just short of the end zone, which allowed the Trojans

to run out the clock and seal victory. But like with any jamboree, the result doesn’t matter in how the 2016 season shakes out. And both coaches know it. Each said they aren’t reading too much into what happened in Friday night’s proceedings, adding that when the teams face each other

again in week 4 on Sept. 23, it will be anyone’s game. “We were missing six or seven guys tonight – some guys who we held out for some disciplinary reasons and different things like that,” Nowlin said. “Those guys had to watch their teammates and classmates tonight go to battle without them. That hurts.
We hope that refocuses our guys. … We feel we’re in good shape and we’re getting better every day.” “We still haven’t won a game that counts yet,” Menard added. “But when you play something, you want to win – whether it counts or not. We did that tonight, so we’re happy with the kids and excited about it.”
LSU’s Miles says less could mean more for Fournette
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU running back Leonard Fournette can live with a lessened workload, if that’s the way coach Les Miles wants it. “It doesn’t matter,” Fournette said Monday when asked whether he wants as many carries as he can get this season. “My main goal is to win the national championship.” The No. 5 Tigers begin a highly anticipated season on Saturday against Wisconsin at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. LSU has loads of talent and experience on both sides of the ball, led by Fournette, a junior running back and a leading Heisman Trophy candidate. Fournette rushed for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns last season — eclipsing 200 yards in a single game three times. But he also carried the ball 300 times and looked a little worn down in November, when defenses were keying on him and he was twice held to fewer than 100 yards. This season, Miles envisions an offense that is more dynamic in the passing game and less reliant on Fournette, but he also expects that approach to benefit his star running back by making defenses less inclined to crowd the middle of the field, close to the line of scrimmage — an area often referred to as “the box,” by coaches. “Balance is a way to remove people from the box and allow us bigger plays,”
BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer
Miles said. “So if we can do the job that we have planned to do throwing the football, then I think you will find that there will be less people in the box and then maybe more productivity out of less carries.” Indeed, when Fournette lines up this season, he’ll do so with an experienced quarterback in junior Brandon Harris and accomplished receivers including junior Malachi Dupre and senior Travin Dural. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst doesn’t seem to think Miles is bluffing when he talks about potentially lessening Fournette’s workload. “He’s got some really good players around him,” Chryst said. The 6-foot-1, 235pound Fournette, whose rare combination of strength, nimble feet and explosive quickness allows him to either run over or dance around would-be tacklers, also could have a greater role as a receiver out of the backfield. That would allow Fournette to operate in space while reducing his exposure to punishing head-on collisions with linebackers toward the middle of the field. Harris recently noted that he’ll be more inclined to opt for short passes to running backs this season when coverage is good downfield because it has become apparent to him that a back like Fournette “can take a 5-yard pass
and turn it into 85.” Miles said Fournette’s workload “will all depend on his conditioning and his health.” “We’re not going to keep him on the field when he’s tired, no matter what,” Miles said. The coach also noted his team is stocked with “maybe the finest tailback group that I’ve been around,” including sophomore Derrius Guice and junior Darrel Williams, who should be able to help LSU maintain a formidable ground game even when Fournette’s getting rest. Amen _________________________ THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention here). Last week I wrote how thousands of my letters, postcards and telegrams received through the years were washed away in Hurricane Hilda’s flood, but the ones criticizing me were saved and hung on my wall. Some were responses to “Letters to the Editor” sent by me which I kept records and newspaper clippings of, a total of 25. They were ALL published, possibly because they were humorous and sarcastic about current issues or tributes to departed friends. They appeared in the Comet, Courier, Gazette, Billboard magazine and even the British journal “Blues Unlimited”. I previously wrote how Joe Silverberg used one as his editorials of the week in the Daily Comet in 1968. Only three were sent to the New Orleans Times Picayune or the New Orleans States-Item and all three were printed with pictures of the subjects added by the editors (see montage). For cleaner copies, send me a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope to 150 West 214 St., Galliano, La. 70354) and I’ll

Carver Meet Ray Griffin, Jr.
Ray Griffin, Jr. of Larose has been carving since 1992. He enjoys carving wooden bedons, miniature boats and old style pintail ducks. Ray sells some of his work to collectors but usually prefers to keep his woodwork. “His proudest carving moments are when his carvings are auctioned and the proceeds are donated to charitable foundations,” he said. As a young boy, Ray hunted with wooden decoys that his father carved. Now, he is able to hunt with his own decoys with his son, Rhett, and daughter, Shay. “It’s really special being able to share that with my children. I also get pleasure out of building miniature
boats. There are so few shrimping boats left on Bayou Lafourche and I want to be part of preserving our culture even if it is only a hand held creation of cypress and tupelo,” he said. Ray is part of a group of carvers that promotes Cajun heritage, decoys, carving and keeping the age-old tradition thriving. The group also sponsors the Cajun Heritage Festival, which is entering its 41st year.
mail you all three. One was about the “Filthy Rich”, an accusation that was hurled then as now, one about cancellation of the “L’il Abner” comic strip, and one about the New Orleans downtown Mississippi River bridges that had just opened. They were satirical and not to be taken seriously. The editors understood this because they called to verify and informed me they enjoyed the humor. Many readers however did not and they responded pro and con. One letter printed by the Picayune called me “stupid” for my opinion. Many readers would probably “Amen” that but here are brief summaries. “Crescent City Connection” bridges. That was a doozy. The name had been selected in a contest and the issue was settled and everybody knew it. I was just expressing my opinion as to what I thought it should have been called. African-American Mayor. Perfectly innocent, right? You would have thought I shot the Pope! Pros and cons came in from both sides. The Picayune printed a few and the editor called me to share the humor. POTUS, Lyndon Johnson’s Secretary of Human Resources Joseph Califano, Jr. stated that a bill in congress to help with college tuition would only help the “Filthy Rich”. Since I had two kids in college it would help me so I listed my salary and sarcastically questioned if I could afford the yacht, mansion and Rolls Royce I needed to maintain my new status of “Filthy Rich”. The editor printed a few responses which urged my boss, Lafourche Parish Assessor Hubert P. Robichaux, to raise my salary. I caught hell for that since he assumed I had publicly complained about my salary, which was not the case. I was forgiven. The “L’il Abner” letter complained about the comic strip being cancelled because the paper considered cartoonist Al Capp too conservative. It was replaced by “Doonesbury” which was drawn by left wing activist Gary Trudeau. The news media supported liberal causes? So what else is new? Many responses, pro and con to that one. Through the years there were many favorable, positive, approving and com-

mending comments about me in newspapers and heard on radio but I will not list them. Why? Well, maybe because I am humble and modest, but mainly because they were political ads when I was running for public office. You need praise to win an election even if I had to pay for it myself. My dime! Well, they were probably all true anyhow. There were some not-so-nice ones about me also but I unselfishly let my opponents
pay for those. Anyway, I prevailed! Today I keep my political opinions to myself, well more than then anyway. But I will make one now. Quote “I am 100% sure that I am 0% sure that I haven’t a clue as to who’s going to win the Presidential election.” Unquote! Next week, a letter on the wall and interviews of famous folks. Bye now! Wedding gift
Martha had a wedding to go to and needed a wedding gift, but she procrastinated and ended up having to come up with something a couple days before the wedding. She thought about it and finally said, “Aha, I have that monogrammed silver tray from my wedding that I never use. I’ll just take it to a silversmith and have him remove my mono-

gram and put hers on it. Voila, one cheap wedding present.” Happy with her idea, she took it to the silversmith and asked him to remove her monogram and put the new one on. The silversmith took a look at the tray, shook his head and said, “Lady, this can only be done so many times. This tray has been passed around half the town already!”

He said maturity has decreased his focus on personal accolades — to an extent. “Overall, those goals are still in the back of my mind,” Fournette conceded, but added that he feels like team goals are far more important, particularly in light of the enjoyment a championship season could bring to fans
in the Baton Rouge area who are in the midst of recovery from recent flooding. “With everything that’s going on with Louisiana I think the championship will help out a lot,” said Fournette, who happened to be speaking 11 years to the day after he experienced Hurricane Katrina as a child in New Orleans. “By us winning that, you don’t know whose life you can change. ... You never know who you can inspire.” ___ AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org AP Sports Writer Genaro Armas in Madison, Wisconsin, contributed to this report.
