Lafourche resident disagrees with TV news report
“The Why” Should Edison Chouest Offshore have to return any of the money? In a word NO! Given time, ECO will turn this money into well-paying careers and help the socioeconomic status of and improve the life of people across the region! I am writing this in response to a Fox 8 report looking into so called “corporate welfare.” I respect that Mr. Zurik is trying to save Louisiana taxpayers money but he is barking up the wrong tree. First, ECO has a proven track record of single handedly, lowering unemployment in an entire region, providing great blue and white-collar careers. The company has coached blue-collar workers into higher paying white-collar employees. My next question is why Mr. Zurik chose one company to single out? What was his motivation to do this? I am of the opinion that Mr. Zurik is at least biased, if not being manipulated. By whom one might ask? The only answer I can come up with is pro socialist forces. There are many social programs he can investigate, that cost the taxpayers billions, yes billions, of dollars if he so chose. One especially comes to mind. Recently, a friend of mine was telling me about his daughter graduating from Loyola. During that conversation he described something I know most of middle class America would find horrifying! His daughter told him that all graduating seniors notified of a meeting. In that meeting “the soon to be” graduates were told how to get on social programs to the tune of $56,000 dollars a year. Needless to say, my friend and I were furious, along with nearly everyone we tell of this abuse of young fertile minds. If one calculates this $56,000 for a mere 100 students, it would equal $5,600,000. Mr. Zurik I would like to know if Loyola is the only perpetrator of such heinous acts against the American taxpayers? Would you please investigate if other colleges are offending students and the middle Class? Vincent J. “Vince” Melvin Thibodaux, LA

Ugly faces
Finding one of her students making faces at others on the playground, Ms. Smith stopped to gently reprove the child. Smiling sweetly, the teacher said, “Bobby, when
I was a child, I was told that if I made ugly faces, it would freeze and I would stay like that.” Bobby looked up and replied, “Well, Ms. Smith, you can’t say you weren’t warned.”

more, School District Business Manager Don Gaudet said. The board will now collect 41.88 mills. A mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of taxable property owned. No one from the public commented during the public hearing. Board members Brooke Huddleston and C. Joey Duplantis were absent. In March board members approved plans to cut $3.5 million from portions of this year’s and next year’s budgets, while also approving a measure asking state lawmakers to give them the go-ahead to ask for a sales tax increase within the next two years. Board officials are preparing to deal with at least $3 million in cuts from reduced sales tax collections. Under the budget reduction plan that was approved in March, the district will freeze new hires and unnecessary out-of-state travel; reduce stipends for evaluations, support attendance and professional attendance; reduce personnel expenditures; and cut from school allotments, child nutrition and the maintenance budget. The state constitution requires parish tax assessors reappraise residential and commercial property every four years. This was that fourth year. Property value is based on recent nearby sales. State law gives the public boards and officials a choice: - Hold a public hearing and roll the rate back even further to take less money from taxpayers. - Forgo a public hearing and keep the “rolledback tax rate, so the districts they oversee collect the same amount of money as the year before. - Hold a public hearing and “roll forward the rates, or millages, and keep the windfall to help pay for public services. The museum also will offer military, families of military and veterans some free tickets to shows at BB’s Stage Door Canteen. Mother cited after child dies in accidental shooting
MARRERO, La. (AP) — The mother of a 5-year-old Marrero boy faces a child desertion charge after the child’s 9-year-old brother accidentally shot him in the head, authorities said Wednesday. Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, said 29-year-old Generra Brown was issued a court summons for the misdemeanor charge because she left the children unsupervised at a Marrero home before the Tuesday evening shooting that killed her son, Melvin Brady. Fortunato said investigators believe that Brown, a home health care professional, was caring for a neighbor across the street when her 9-year-old son found a loaded gun while he and his brother were playing in a bedroom closet. As the older brother handled the handgun, it fired one shot that struck the younger child. The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers responded to the shooting around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Brown dialed 911 after learning about the shooting from the older child. ___
month in the United States. That’s more than what occurred during the entire seven months after President Barack Obama directed his team to prepare for 10,000 admissions from the war-torn country. Total admissions for the current budget year now come to about 7,900, and the vast majority of them are Sunni Muslims, records show. Obama’s call for 10,000 entries this year was criticized by most Republican governors and the GOP presidential candidates, who argued that the government lacked an adequate screening system to prevent suspected terrorists from slipping into the U.S. ___
Education dept.: More students reach English, math ‘mastery’
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s Department of Education says the percentage of students achieving “mastery scores on 2016 standardized assessment tests improved from 33 percent to 38 percent. The overall percentage reaching at least a “basic score increased as well. But education officials say achievement gaps remain unacceptably wide — with lower percentages of black students, students with disabilities and students from low-income households making high scores. Results on this year’s “LEAP tests were released Thursday. State Education Superintendent John White says the tests results are encouraging, given that performance has improved even as the tests and standards have become more challenging. Still, he said the achievement gaps must be closed. And more work must be done to prepare students for post-secondary coursework. Parish president gets first-hand look at area levee projects
Sunday, August 7, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle was on hand Tuesday afternoon with officials from the South Lafourche Levee District and the Terrebonne Conservation and Levee District to see firsthand the progress being made on area levees. Cantrelle visited the site in lower Pointe aux Chenes where the “Reach K segment of the Morganza to the Gulf project is set to begin in the next month as an approximate 1,800-foot section of levee will be upgraded with trucked in dirt to a near 10-foot elevation. This segment, which should be completed by year’s end, will eventually
How to pay bills now a public school requirement in Louisiana
When public school students return to classrooms on Monday they will face a new, mandatory topic — financial literacy. Under a 2016 state law, students will be taught the basics of money management, depending on age and grade. The issue was previously optional for schools. Topics expected to be taught include savings, banking, mortgages, investing, earning and how to buy a house. State Rep. Gene Reynolds, D-Dubberly, who sponsored the bill, said much of the financial literacy taught in civics, business math and other courses is out of date and most kids today don’t have a clue about finances. The legislation was backed and promoted by the Louisiana Bankers Association, which like credit unions, the FDIC and other institutions, offers money management tips online. The measure, House Bill 401, won Senate approval 36-0 and passed the House 90-0.

Rocks
From 1-A
Mel wanted to do something of the like in Lafourche but decided to include inspirational and spiritual messages. “It’s inexpensive, positive and a spiritual way to send good vibes. So many people see the messages and know were sent to them at this point in their life. You can call it a rock but to me it’s so much more than that. It carries a special message to so many, Mel said. After she started the group and things took off, several people posted that they’d like to get together in Lockport to paint rocks. Geaux Create, a family art center in Lockport, offered their place of business for the group painting session. During the event, the Lockport Chief of Police dropped by and asked if the group would like to help others paint rocks during the town’s Night Out against Crime, held on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle dropped in on a session being held in Thibodaux to let the youth and adult participants know that he appreciated their efforts to spread positivity in our parish. A free rock painting session was held on Saturday, August 6 at the Central Lafourche Market as well. On Sunday, August 14, there will be an event at the Cut Off Youth Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise money to buy upgraded vests and equipment for Lafourche police officers. There will also be a free rock-painting booth at the event. “I am just amazed and humbled by how much this movement has gained speed. My heart is happy to see so many little children with smiles and families working together to spread good vibes, said Mel. She went on to say that she hears so many positive stories from people who needed to get the message that was sent to them via rock or from families whose children put down the video games and iPads in order to paint rocks and bring them to different locations. The rules are simple: find rocks and paint them then place them throughout Lafourche Parish. If you want to keep the rock you find, be sure you replace it with a rock that you have painted so that someone else will find one as well. Place all rocks outdoors (not inside stores or businesses). Painters need to remember that since their artwork will be outdoors, they should use paints that are weather resistant (such as acrylic) and to use a clear coat (such as polyurethane spray) to seal it. Participants are urged to take a picture and post it to the parish Facebook group as well as the national one so news feeds will be filled with positive messages. So grab a rock, get to painting and spread the love, Lafourche!

What a Life!
Sunday, August 7, 2016 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Henri Nouwen shows us the face of God in his writing and his actions Henri Nouwen, (1932– 1996), was a Dutch Catholic Priest, professor, writer and theologian. His interests included psychology, pastoral ministry, spirituality, social justice and community. I had the opportunity to hear Nouwen talk at various religious conventions. After teaching at the University of Notre Dame, Yale Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School for two decades, Nouwen went on to work with mentally and physically disabled people at the L’Arche Daybreak Community in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He lived a simple life. His small room had a single bed, one bookshelf, and a few pieces of Shakerstyle furniture. The walls were unadorned except for a few religious symbols. There he found peace. Nouwen looked after a young man named Adam.
He often brought Adam to his talks. Adam was unable to talk or dress himself. He was profoundly retarded. He would drool and grunted loudly a few times when Nouven was giving a talk. Nouwen spent nearly two hours a day preparing Adam – bathing and shaving him, brushing his teeth, combing his hair, guiding his hand as he tried to eat breakfast. These simple, repetitive acts had become for him almost like an hour of meditation. Was this the best use of a busy, talented priest’s time? When asked this question, Nouwen responded, “I am not giving up anything. It is I, not Adam, who gets the main benefit from our friendship. The goal of education and formation for the ministry is continually to recognize the Lord’s voice, his face, and his touch in every person we meet.” He admitted that the messiness of caring for an uncoordinated person did not come easily. Yet he had learned to love Adam. In the process he had learned what it must be like for God to love us who are spiritually bumbling, retarded, able to respond with what must seem to God like inarticulate

In 2010, Schiller founded K9s4COPs to fund the donation of trained K9s to law enforcement agencies and schools around the world in order to offset these concerns. “We are glad to help any way we can,” said Schiller. “K9s4COPs was founded to bridge the gap and ensure that K9 costs never keep an officer from having their K9 partner.” Thanks to the efforts of State Representatives Blake Miguez (R-District 49 and K9s4COPs board member) and Jerome “Zee” Zeringue (R- District 52), Governor John Bell Edwards recently signed legislation creating an available Louisiana license plate for the K9s4COPs or-

Joseph Sebastian; Faithful Captain, Dale Terrebonne; Faithful Admiral, Nathan Arceneaux; Faithful Purser, James Cheramie; Faithful Pilot, Jamie Vizier; Faithful Scribe, David Becker; Faithful Inner Sentinel, John Guidry; Faithful Outer Sentinel, Laurie Callais; One Year Trustee, Telemaque Cheramie, Jr.; Two Year Trustee, Gary Champagne; Three Year Trustee, Terry Cheramie, Jr. Afterwards, Br. Norman “Joe” Legendre, representing Assembly #1878 of Raceland presented a plaque to Rodney Hartman as the Knight of Year. Also, a plaque was presented to Bobby and Susan Granier as the Family of the Year. Brother Arceneaux representing Assembly #0327 presented the following awards: Award of Merit to T.J. Cheramie; Clergy of the Year to Deacon Melvin Marts; Family of the Year to John and Jackie Guidry; and Knight of the Year to Charles “Mike” Callais.

ganization. Proceeds from the sale of the K9s4COPs license plate will assist in placing additional canines in Louisiana law enforcement agencies and schools. “Grand Isle and the state of Louisiana are fortunate to be on the receiving end of K9s4COPs’ generous donations,” said Lt. Gov. Billy Nunngusser. “K9s4COPs is a great program and our law enforcement agencies are better equipped thanks to their efforts.” K9s4COPs has placed over 130 K9s in 33 states and Paris, France. These K9s have removed more than $140 million in contraband from the streets and are responsible for more than 1,850 arrests in barely over five years.
grunts and groans. Working with Adam had taught him humility and the ability to empty himself. Nouwen recognized himself as The Wounded Healer that he wrote of early in his career: those able to bring healing to others while acknowledging personal wounds. His spiritual breakthrough came when he drew too close to a member of his spiritual community that led to his published journal, The Inner Voice of Love, in which he realized that people will try to hook you in your wounds, and “dismiss what God, through you, is saying to them.” Nouwen’s writings are clear. For example, “Choices make the difference. Two people are in the same accident and severely wounded. They did not choose to be in the acci-

dent. It happened to them. But one of them chose to live the experience in bitterness, the other in gratitude. These choices radically influenced their lives and the lives of their families and friends. We have very little control over what happens in our lives, but we have a lot of control over how we integrate and remember what happens. These spiritual choices determine whether we live our lives with dignity.” Another example, “Many voices ask for our attention. A voice says, ‘Prove that you are a good person.’ Another voice says, ‘You’d better be ashamed of yourself.’ There also is a voice that says, ‘Nobody really cares about you,’ and one that says, ‘Be sure to become successful, popular, and powerful.’ Yet underneath all these often
