BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Leaders of the Office of Motor Vehicles assured state lawmakers Friday they are working to shrink wait times for people renewing their driver’s licenses and registering their vehicles, amid complaints that some customers have been stuck in line for hours. Lawmakers said they’ve received complaints that waits have spiked for people seeking to handle routine tasks. “The general public feels like that with the fees they pay for licenses that there are enough dollars there that the office should have less wait times, better service,” said Rep. Jim Fannin, R-Jonesboro, chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget. Col. Mike Edmonson, who oversees the Office of Motor Vehicles as head of the Department of Public Safety, told lawmakers that he was enacting changes to speed up visits to locations around Louisiana.

Agents seize car, drugs and cash in arrest of two fugitives

Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force agents seized a car, drugs and cash in the arrest of two fugitives now facing additional charges. Calvin Robertson Jr., 30, and Jenna Toups, 26, both of Raceland, were arrested Thursday at a Raceland residence. Task Force agents learned through investigation Thursday that Robertson and Toups were located at a residence on Danos Street in Raceland. Toups had two active warrants for distribution of methamphetamine, and Robertson had an active warrant for second degree battery following an incident earlier this year wherein he allegedly struck a relative on the head with a handgun. Robertson and Toups were arrested and taken into custody per the active warrants. When asked whether any illegal items were in the room, Toups

told agents she had a pipe in her purse, which agents then recovered. Agents discovered the pipe contained a small amount of suspected methamphetamine. As he was being taken into custody, Robertson attempted to reach for a pair of pants. Inside the pockets of those pants, agents discovered several small plastic bags, two containing suspected cocaine, one containing suspected crack cocaine, one containing suspected heroin, and another con-

Sunflower seed field sends ripples of joy Marc C. Kimball Contributing Writer

And God said, “Let the Earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the Earth. And it was so.” Shelia Danos knows this verse from the book of Genesis. She has taken it to heart and her reflections go there often as she walks across her garden. Growing up amidst 240 acres of land including pastures for cattle, canals for crawfish and perch fishing and sugar-cane fields, just two miles south of Lockport, Shelia has seen God’s miraculous power, specifically when it comes to cultivating crops and bringing in a harvest. Her father grew a vegetable garden. She’s seen it her entire life and it flows through her soul. Her gardening efforts began small in clay pots on a patio. But, in 1975 when she moved to her present home, she expanded her plantings into the flower beds that surrounded her home. Gardening was always a part of her life. Since her early 20’s, her life was dedicated to being a wife, mother and homemaker. Her gardening had to

wait. As her children grew and took on lives of their own, her house became less full and somewhat quieter. Shelia moved towards her basic nature and went outside to put her hands in the dirt more often. After all, gardening and planting is inherent to her French ancestry – she’s descended from a long line of French farmers. In 2000, she enlisted the help of her father-in-law, 84-year old Jim Danos, affectionately referred to as “Paw”. He was there to help with a large tractor, attachments and the laborious process of tilling the land when she designed and planted her first garden which she calls her “healing garden”. It was her first planting attempt outside of her earlier locals of clay pots and her home’s flower beds. “We have a quiet understanding, a mutual relationship over the land. Paw loves to be out on his tractor and truly enjoys working the soil,” she said. Later that same year, the concept of a garden on the property expanded to include a citrus orchard, a tree lined path and a grove of trees. Paw would dig up and till the plots of land then hand them over to Shelia. See Sunflowers Page 7-A

WASHINGTON (AP) — A suspenseful election night is one thing, but what if it stretches out for a month? Or into next year? A handful of tight races in states with quirky election laws make for the headache-inducing possibility that Election Day will come and go without deciding which party controls the Senate. If that happens, brace for a fierce runoff election and possible recounts that could make for an ugly holiday season in politics and government. The main reason for uncertainty: Louisiana’s election laws. Strategists in both parties say a Dec. 6 runoff is likely because Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu and top Republican challenger Bill Cassidy will struggle to exceed 50 percent on the crowded Nov. 4 ballot. In Louisiana’s “jungle primary,” all candidates — regardless of party — run in November. If none exceeds 50 percent, the top two finishers head into a Dec. 6 runoff. It’s not implausible that control of the Senate could hang on a Louisiana runoff. Republicans need six more seats to claim a 51-49 Senate majority. A 50-50 split would let Vice President Joe Biden break tie votes and keep Democrats in charge. Republicans are strongly favored to win three races where Democratic senators are retiring: West Virginia, South Dakota and Montana. Their best hopes to pick up three more seats are in the four contests where Democrats seek re-election in states President Barack Obama lost: Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina. Republicans are also making strong bids in Iowa, Colorado and New Hampshire, which Obama carried. If Republicans win two of those races, plus the three where they are heavily favored, then all eyes and lots of campaign money would turn to See Senate Page 7-A

Wedding

Mom, my favorite teacher and books

Throughout my life, my elementary school years have rested gentle on my mind. I fondly remember my dedicated teachers, Miss Nettles, Miss Bourgeois, (Mrs. Luke Cheramie), Miss Bolden, Miss Waguespack and Miss Weldon. I’m sure they were not any better than today’s teachers (O.K. Lisa?) but they were more scrutinized by the public and held to higher and more stringent personal standards than today. Most of them lived in Mrs. Inez Rizan’s boarding house, next door to the school. Like most boys my age I read comic books. I had the original Superman, Action Comics No.1 and the first Batman, Detective Comics No. 27 ‌ but those went to the World War II paper drives. They sold for a dime and the two I mentioned are today worth $500,000.00 apiece. (Oh! Yi Yi!) My reading habits improved when, in seventh grade, my teacher Miss Waguespack assigned me a book.

“It’s a little advanced for you, but give it a try,â€? she said. I read it over the weekend, gave a report which got me an “Aâ€?, and my parents celebrated for a week. The world opened for me and I have been a voracious reader ever since. In this book about the French Revolution, I read the greatest opening and closing lines in literary fiction history ‌ “It was the best of times, it was the worst of timesâ€?, and, “It’s a far far better thing I do than I have ever done, it is a far

better place I go to that I have ever known.â€? It was, of course, “A Tale of Two Citiesâ€? by Charles Dickens. I didn’t give up my comic books cold turkey, but my reading tastes improved. Now, back a few years to my first day in third grade. I was dazzled by it all because I had not yet mastered the English language. (My readers can tell that I still haven’t). The door opened and in walked a beautiful young lady who wrote on the blackboard “my name is Marion Weldonâ€? and told us “you may call me Miss Weldon.â€? The jaw of every male 9-year old third grader hit the floor. They were smitten, and so was I. Of course I shrugged it off, after all there was the language barrier. She couldn’t speak French and I could hardly speak English, and she was very old ‌ at least 19, I guessed. I started to like school because of her and she became and has always been my favorite teacher. I found out that she was from a prominent Thibodaux family, but this was still the Depression, and a teacher went where she was assigned. She soon got to love Golden Meadow, was wooed and won by young Jack Egle, who later became the Mayor of Golden Meadow. Their son, Dick Egle, became the first elected President of Lafourche Parish. Miss Weldon must have been proud. I didn’t see her much for the rest of her life, she was busy teaching, raising a family and becoming the first lady of Golden Meadow. Her son, Dick and his sisters entrusted me with her wedding day picture and told me “she was a warm and caring person.â€? Many years later, I visited my mother at the Cut Off nursing home. It was her 89th birthday and I had written and recorded a song for her called “Helen,â€? which I sang as a nurse wheeled her around. It was, so far, a joyful day. Then I noticed a lady sitting in a wheel chair, not moving and staring straight ahead. “Who is that?â€? I asked a nurse. “That’s Mrs. Jack Egle,â€? she answered. It was my favorite teacher! I later learned that she had Alzheimer, and her son, Dick told me that, “It had turned her personality around 180 degrees.â€? I watched her awhile, and as I was leaving, my eyes were moist, and a tear flowed down. No, not for my mother ‌ mom and I had a nice afternoon, she laughed, enjoyed my singing, (well ‌ my mother, you know), and was in great spirits, but the tear was for my beautiful third grade teacher and through my eyes, that day, she still looked the same as when she walked into my classroom, many, many years ago. Bye now.

Daryl Purpera’s office on Monday released a nonpartisan overview about the English and math standards used in Louisiana’s public school classrooms. The 30-page report describes development of the standards, gives a sample of the changed teaching and outlines other states’ use of Common Core. The report also provides an overview of the Common Core lawsuits filed in Louisiana. More than 40 states, including Louisiana, have adopted Common Core, which describes what students should know after completing each grade. Gov. Bobby Jindal opposes the standards, saying the Obama administration has manipulated use of Common Core to try to control local education policy and curriculum. ___

La. tax amnesty collections expected to be harder

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield says delinquent taxpayers seeking to take advantage of Louisiana’s latest amnesty period will be allowed to pay their backowed debts through an installment plan. Barfield hopes offering that new option will help generate more interest in the amnesty program, which needs to drum up $100 million to keep this year’s state budget in balance. The tax amnesty runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 14, offering people the ability to settle tax debts with half the interest and no penalties charged. Louisiana brought in $452 million from a similar amnesty last year, but Barfield told the Baton Rouge Press Club that expectations should be lowered this time. He says the remaining delinquent taxes are harder to collect. Details about the tax amnesty program are available at www.ldrtaxamnesty.com.

She said Edwards should get a good show of voter support, but declined to offer her own, saying: “He’s running his campaign. I’m running mine. Landrieu was asked about Edwards after endorsing Democratic U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond in the 2nd District. Edwards is one of 13 candidates on the ballot for the neighboring 6th District and the most prominent Democrat. Earlier this month, the state Democratic Party announced its support for Edwards, who served four terms as governor and later jail time on a corruption conviction. ___

2 Louisiana companies’ Navy contracts total $26.8M

offshore vessels and defender boats. The Naval Sea Systems Command says the work is to be done by October 2015 at Umm Qasr Naval Base. Offshore Service Vessels Inc. of Cut Off is getting an $8.8 million, one-year extension to its charter of maritime support vessel MV C-Champion. The Navy’s Military Sealift Command is exercising an option on its contract for the vessel, which is used to launch and recover, refuel and provision, and help with limited maintenance for small boats. The Pentagon says the C-Champion works worldwide.

Lafourche Parish residents are eligible for discounted spay and neutering services. Pet owners will pay a fraction of the total cost. Visit the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter at 934 Hwy. 3185 in Thibodaux, or call 985-4463532. Shelter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Residents must provide a photo ID and proof of residency in Lafourche Parish. If the animal was adopted from the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter, documentation must be provided. All appointments must be made at the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter. Email lpas@lafourche gov.org for more information. The most important thing to know about spaying and neutering is that it saves lives. In every community in every state, there are animals sitting in shelters waiting for homes. Only about half of those dogs and cats will ever get one. The other half will be euthanized. Each year, about 3.7 million animals are euthanized (American Humane Association). Five in 10 dogs and 7 in 10 cats in shelters are euthanized simply because there is no one to adopt them.

Sunflowers From 1-A

“Two years ago, he tilled the second plots I pointed to. I would ask and he would happily oblige by preparing plots for me to expand my gardening efforts,â€? says Shelia. “In 2012, my son Dirk and granddaughter Ava were there to plant a vegetable garden which included wildflowers and a few sunflowers with me.â€? It was an experiment of sorts. Shelia had never cultivated sunflowers before. The fall garden followed that very same year with two extra hands helping, her daughter Denise and Kennedy, Ava’s younger cousin. With the same affectionate enthusiasm, Paw pulled out his tractor and equipment again to begin making plots. “He had a new vegetable garden, and his old, abandoned vegetable garden had lain fallow for some time,â€? says Shelia. After he worked the soil, he turned it over to Shelia and that is where the sunflower field was born ‌ sort of. “This year I pointed to a third plot of fallow land and we did it again!â€? Shelia now had the blank canvas she needed to begin planting and realized she wanted to cultivate something that would bring a little extra joy into her life. She decided on sunflowers. Yup ‌ an entire field of gorgeous, yellow sunflowers. When one thinks sun-

flowers, they usually think bags of salted seeds sold in grocery stores. When Shelia thinks sunflower seeds, she thinks of beauty, joy and the miracle contained in that tiny vessel of life. “Planning, planting and blooming! The entire process truly brings me joy,â€? she says. Her husband Reed and daughter Denise caught the thrill and the infectious enthusiasm. They joined her in the field and helped plant the multitudes of sunflower seeds. Little did Shelia know that her idea of planting a field filled with hundreds of beautiful sunflowers would have a ripple effect, bringing joy to so, so many others! Within eight to ten weeks, around mid-June, the sunflowers sprouted and grew and grew! From one of those tiny seeds, a sunflower plant grew to a height of 13 feet. She refuses any credit. “It’s the miracle of that tiny seed,â€? she says. “There is power in that seed. The soil, water from the rain, the sun ‌ that one seed produces seeds in multiples,â€? she added. As part of an exercise with her granddaughter Ava, they counted the seeds from just one larger sunflower. “That one seed we planted produced a beautiful sunflower bearing somewhere over 1,000 seeds,â€? she said. “It’s truly amazing!â€? It’s an objective lesson from the creator himself, if we take the time to see it.

The lesson: We cannot out give God. What we give Him, he gives back multiplied many times over. “I have seen fields of sunflowers before in France,â€? she says. “To see it here behind Paw’s barn was just truly amazing,â€? she added. Shelia called professional Houston photographer and long-time friend Pauline Plaisance Forester. “I told Pauline we had something amazing here,â€? Shelia says. Pauline came down and scheduled multiple photo shoots during that last week of June. “Individuals, kids, families ‌ it seemed like Pauline took thousands of photos in that wondrous sunflower field,â€? she says. “It was glorious to see all those people enjoying the sunflowers. “Those tiny seeds we planted brought me joy and just rippled out,â€? she says. “The photographs Pauline took are in people’s homes, in their living rooms hanging on their walls, adorning their mantles, continuing to ripple out joy.â€? Shelia cut some of the sunflowers and made bouquets which she arranged in various vases. She then photographed them and sent friends and family emailed notes with her beautiful sunflower bouquet pictures attached again rippling out joy. Denise cut some of the sunflowers and made bouquets she delivered to friends and relatives. The joy of the tiny seed didn’t end there! Shelia also painted bouquets of sunflowers from the photos she had taken. Painting is a new skill she is still acquiring. About six years ago, she took up painting under the helpful tutelage of local artist Tracey Wiseart-Plaisance. Wiseart-Plaisance was at the Danos’ house to paint a mural in Shelia’s dining room. “After she agreed to paint my dining room mural, I asked if she would also teach me how to paint,â€? she says. “Tracey never taught art to anyone before, and I had never painted before.â€? Since the two began their mentor/student partnership Shelia has completed several paintings featuring her beautiful sunflower bouquets. “It appears the gift of that tiny seed is still rippling joy,â€? she says with a beaming smile underlined with humility. The miraculous joy of the tiny sunflower seed

hasn’t stopped. Paw was at it again in early August. “We just planted another field of sunflowers, she says. This crop of sunflowers is expected to be in full bloom at the end of October, beginning of November. “We have a wonderful growing season in the fall, she says. “We planted more of the darker sunflower colors for the fall, she added. There are various types of sunflowers in numerous fall colors – amazing deep, rich shades of orange, burgundy and reds in infinite combinations as well as multitudes of deep, rich golds and magnificent browns. Who knew sunflowers come in colors other than yellow? This is an experiment of sorts for Shelia. “I have never planted sunflowers in these colors and have never tried growing them in the fall, she said. “We have a wonderful fall and winter growing season here so I figured why not try? The anticipation is wonderful, she says as her face beams with excitement and she visualizes the rows and rows of autumnal-colored sunflowers that are soon to sprout. “Planting brings me joy. And, the ripples of joy from the sunflowers keeps going, she added. The fact Shelia has shared her wondrous story here is proof those tiny seeds are continuing to ripple out joy even to you, our readers, and our community!

Senate From 1-A

Louisiana if there’s a runoff. “And I don’t think there’s any chance we don’t go into a runoff in Louisiana, said Brian Walsh, a Republican adviser in Senate races. A major GOP campaign

Wednesday, September 24, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

group has reserved $4 million in Louisiana TV air time after Nov. 4, anticipating battling Landrieu through Dec. 6. Waiting for a make-orbreak Louisiana outcome would deeply affect the postelection congressional session scheduled to start Nov. 12. Congress must appropriate money in November to keep the government running, and it may revisit the president’s continued authority to arm Syrian rebels, among other things. If Republicans think they will control the Senate in the new Congress set to convene Jan. 3, they may want to limit action in the Democratic-controlled lame-duck session. It’s almost certain that Republicans will retain their House majority. Georgia’s Senate race could have an even messier outcome than Louisiana’s. GOP nominee David Perdue is thought to have a modest lead over Democrat Michelle Nunn in the race to succeed retiring Republican Saxby Chambliss. But there’s a Libertarian on the ballot, who might win enough votes to keep Perdue and Nunn from reaching 50 percent. That would trigger a runoff Jan. 6, three days after the new Congress’ scheduled start. It requires a lot of “ifs. But a scenario in which Republicans entered the new Congress with a 50-49 Senate majority, while awaiting a Georgia outcome that could soon return them to the minority, would further roil an already bitterly partisan government. If nothing else, “it would make for a bad Christmas for everyone, said GOP strategist Ron Bonjean. A recount of a Georgia runoff result, should there be one, would extend confusion even deeper into

7-A

2015. A candidate may request a recount if the margin is less than 1 percent of all votes cast. Alaska presents another possibility for an inconclusive Nov. 4 Senate election. Alaska traditionally counts only about twothirds of its total vote on election night. State law postpones counting most absentee and questioned ballots until a week after the election. Twice in the past six year, a Senate winner in Alaska wasn’t declared until at least two weeks after Election Day. This year, the state features one of the nation’s tightest races. First-term Democratic Sen. Mark Begich faces Republican Dan Sullivan. Obama lost Alaska by 14 percentage points. Of all the high-stakes “what if possibilities, campaign professionals see a Dec. 6 Louisiana runoff as the most likely. Landrieu has scrapped to win three Senate terms, but the state has trended Republican in recent years. “If Louisiana is the deciding seat, pity anyone watching television in the state that month, said Matt Bennett, who has advised several Democratic candidates. “They will be blitzed with more ads, from campaigns and outside groups, than they could possibly imagine. Generally, Republicans fare better in runoffs because their supporters tend to vote regardless of the date, weather or levels of publicity. But an intensive, welltargeted get-out-the-vote operation could save Landrieu, Bennett said, “and the Democrats clearly dominate in the technology and coordination of their ground campaigns. Follow Charles Babington on Twitter: https://twitter.com/cbabington

Tarpons, Trojans crushed in bleak week 3 By Casey Gisclair Contributing Writer

The look on South Lafourche head football coach Dennis Skains’ face said it all. For the second time in three games, the Tarpons’ defense was battered and bruised by its opponent, resulting in another lopsided loss for the local prep football team. As the coach addressed reporters after the game, an obvious look of frustration and fatigue were in Skains’ body language as he struggled to find answers for why his team played so poorly in Friday night’s 56-15 defeat at the hands of Shaw – a game that dropped the Tarpons to 1-2 on the season. The coach was straight and to the point after the game, saying that the team has no choice but to keep progressing and to get better. “Shaw did a great job, but what’s most disappointing is that we played pretty poorly, Skains said

after the game. “We just played really, really bad. Defensively, we’re playing a system that is really simple. What we’re doing isn’t complicated. We want the kids to not have to think too much. We just were scrambling to find an answer for them and we just couldn’t do it. We have to keep working and we have to get better. It’s not going to get any easier – that’s for sure. For South Lafourche, the tough night started bright and early. The Tarpons won the coin toss and deferred possession to the Eagles, who took the ball for the opening drive. With possession, Shaw drove down the field and scored on a deep bomb from quarterback Matt Keller to receiver Bryson Simmons to take a 7-0 lead – one of three touchdowns for Simmons on the night. After a South Lafourche punt, Shaw hammered the Tarpons on the ground, capping a lengthy drive with a 35-

yard touchdown run from halfback Trey Ragas to go on top 14-0 in the late first quarter. Not wanting to go down without a fight, South Lafourche drove the ball down the field and scored one of its two touchdowns of the night on a short scamper by quarterback Harvey Allen, who also ran in the 2-point conversion to make the game 14-8. Allen was a bright spot on the night of struggles for the Tarpons, rushing for 70-plus yards and passing for more than 200 yards. But that was as close as South Lafourche got as the Eagles scored touchdowns on eight-straight drives to start the game to take a 42-15 halftime lead – a margin that got only got worse in the second half when the Eagles put the game away for good. The Tarpons’ second touchdown of the game came in the second quarter when Allen hit receiver Audie Pitre on a deep touchdown pass. With the loss, South Lafourche now heads into Bayou District play. The Tarpons will travel next weekend to play a road tilt with East St. John – a team that stole a heartbreaking win from South Lafourche last year. Skains said his team needs to play better against a solid Wildcats squad filled with explosive playmakers like LSU commitment Xavier Lewis. “They’re a good football team, Skains said. “We have to get better. We’re not going to give up. We’re not going to quit. The only thing I know is to keep working – that’s it. That’s what we’ll do – keep working. When in adversity, that’s what you do to get out of it. You keep working and you keep pushing and you fight your way out of it. That’s what we’ll do. ___

Trojans fall to Mandeville in final pre-district tune-up

Just like South Lafourche, it was a slow start that plagued Central Lafourche in its final nondistrict game, as the Tro-

jans fell 34-7 in a home date with Mandeville. The Skippers roared out of the gates early and grabbed control of the game in the first quarter, roaring to a 17-0 lead in their first three possessions. Mandeville controlled the tempo of Friday night’s game throughout, dominating in the trenches on both offense and defense. The Skippers pounded Central Lafourche for nearly 300 yards rushing, while limiting the Trojans to just 41 yards rushing in the game. “They beat us up front, Trojans coach Keith Menard said. “We said all week that we needed to stop their rushing attack and we just didn’t do it. They did a nice job and deserve some credit, but we’ve got to be tougher up front and better in the trenches. After the shaky start left Central Lafourche in a big-time rut, the Trojans stabilized their efforts in the second quarter when halfback Thomas Wesley plunged into the end zone from one-yard out to make the game 17-7. Mandeville threatened before halftime, but a Central Lafourche interception derailed the Skippers’ chance for points, sending the game to halftime at 177. Out of the lockers, the Skippers recovered from the turnover and took control of the game for good, scoring two touchdowns and adding a late field goal to push the game to its final 34-7 margin.

Saints defense better in 20-9 win over Vikings 2-B

Wednesday, September 24, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZTTE

BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Saints’ defense was starting to look like a liability in coordinator Rob Ryan’s second season. That is, until New Orleans hosted a Minnesota team that was missing its star running back coming in — then lost its starting quarterback in the first half. Playing in the comfort of the Superdome, where New Orleans hasn’t lost since 2012, the Saints kept an opponent out of the end zone for an entire game for the first time this season, yielding three field goals in a 20-9 victory over the Vikings. “We don’t want to let them down there at all, but when you do, you can’t give up a touchdown, Saints middle linebacker Curtis Lofton said. “You’ve got to force field goals, so we did a great job with that and finding a way to get a stop. Peterson left Minnesota indefinitely during the past week to address child abuse charges, and then quarterback Matt Cassel broke his left foot after a 5-yard scramble early in the second quarter. The Vikings (1-2) turned to rookie Teddy Bridgewater, who was supposed to be their QB of the future, not the present. Such developments didn’t hurt a Saints defense that was on the field when New Orleans (1-2) lost leads inside the final seconds of its first two games this season. “Just getting the win itself boosts your confidence, Lofton said. “We’ve been 0-2 and it hasn’t been all cupcakes and clowns. Now, all the work you put in pays off on Sunday. In Week 1, New Orleans’ defense was plagued by missed tackles while yielding 568 yards and 38 points in Atlanta. In Week 2, communication cross-ups and untimely penalties contributed to Cleveland piling up 334 yards and 26 points. The Saints held Minnesota to 247 yards, with edge pass rushers Junior Galette and Cam Jordan each getting a sack. The Vikings also gained only 59 yards on the ground, but said they’d have to figure out how to overcome the loss of Peterson and execute better close to the end zone. “We can’t look at (Peterson’s absence) and make excuses, running back Matt Asiata said. “We got into the red zones a few times and just didn’t capitalize. You put yourself in great position to score and we didn’t do it. Here are some things learned from the Saints’ triumph over Minnesota: B R I D G E WA T E R ’ S DEBUT: The rookie QB out of Louisville will be running Minnesota’s offensive for the foreseeable future now that Cassel has fractured bones in his foot. Against New Orleans, he led two field-goal drives, going 12 of 20 for 150 yards. He also proved elusive under pressure, scrambling for 27 yards. “I missed a couple of easy throws, but overall I thought it was a good performance, Bridgewater said. “Moving forward, I think I am definitely going

to be ready. BREES’ BRAVADO: Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who passed for 293 yards and two scores, looked ready for a fight after being body-slammed on a penalized sack by Captain Munnerlyn. Brees shoved safety Robert Blanton, who had piled onto Munnerlyn’s takedown, and the moment seemed to spark the Saints. The penalty resulted in a

first down near midfield and Brees connected with Marques Colston for an 18-yard score a few plays later. “If you want to fire this team up, that’s the guy to go after, right tackle Zach Strief said of Brees. RUNNING ROOM: With Saints leading rusher Mark Ingram sidelined by a broken hand, New Orleans finished with its fewest yards rushing of the young season with 108. Still, the Saints got timely production from Khiry Robinson, who rushed 18 times for 69 yards. Coach Sean Payton showed a balanced approach to his play-calling,

with 32 runs to 35 passes. CLAMPING DOWN: After giving up two early touchdowns, the Vikings’ defense demonstrated its ability to adjust and slow the Saints’ normally prolific offense. Minnesota was within one score while keeping New Orleans off the board from late in the first quarter until early in the final quarter. And New Orleans’ last TD may not have happened if Munnerlyn’s late third-quarter sack hadn’t been flagged for roughness. DOME ADVANTAGE: The Saints continue to be very difficult to beat at

home. They’ve won nine straight games in the Superdome — 18 straight under coach Sean Payton, who was suspended in 2012

when New Orleans last lost at home. ____ Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

The loss marked the first of the season for Central Lafourche, who started the season hot with wins over Franklin and Clark. The Trojans will open Bayou District competition on the road with H.L. Bourgeois – a game slated for Terrebonne High School’s stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. But those wishing to attend that game should consult with Central Lafourche High School before Friday, because the Braves have had to move some of their home games to other venues this season because of poor field conditions at Terrebonne due to the recent rain events in the Houma area.

Loss to Miss St. yields QB questions for LSU BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — In LSU’s worst game of this young season, reserve quarterback Brandon Harris looked better than ever in the little playing time he had. The freshman’s stirring performance in the dying minutes of a humbling 3429 loss to Mississippi State begged the question of what might have been if the young quarterback with the big arm had more snaps. And with the Tigers sliding from a No. 8 ranking down to No. 17 this week, it sounds like coach Les Miles is considering that question seriously. “He definitely gave a strong performance when he came in,” Miles said. “We are still going to look at the overall body of work and the things that we can do with him.” Mississippi State, which went from unranked up to No. 14 in the AP Poll on Sunday, appeared to have LSU down for the count when the Bulldogs kicked a field goal to make it 34-10 early in the fourth quarter. Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott was having his way with an LSU defense plagued by communication problems and missed assignments in giving up 10 plays of 20-yards or more, including touchdowns of 74 and 56 yards. But just inside the final two minutes, Harris found fellow freshman Malachi Dupre for touchdowns of 31 and 30 yards in a span of just 27 seconds. The first score capped a 95-yard drive that took only 1:48 as Harris also hit on passes of 19, 13 and 25 yards while mixing in a 7-yard run. The second score came just two plays after the Bulldogs fumbled in their own territory. Unable to recover an onside kick with 1:27 to go, LSU still got the ball back on its own 20 with 20 seconds left after a punt through the end zone. Harris quickly found Travin Dural for a 22-yard gain and then scrambled 12 yards before spiking the ball to stop the clock with about 5 seconds to go — enough time to roll out and launch a Hail Mary attempt. Will Redmond’s interception at the goal line as time ran out finally ended the threat and secured the Bulldogs’ first victory over LSU since 1999, and first triumph in Death Valley since 1991. “Give us a couple more yards, a couple more seconds and I don’t know that we wouldn’t have won that game,” Miles said. “That’s just maybe a coach being very optimistic.” Jennings had been solid under center for the first three games, hitting just enough key passes for a comeback victory over Wisconsin before cruising through a pair of lopsided victories against overmatched Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe. Against, Mississippi State, however, Jennings was under constant pressure an appeared hurt after Ethan Pocic, a fill-in starter at right guard,

didn’t pick up stunting defensive end Preston Smith, who stormed into the backfield unabated for a jarring sack. Jennings returned and played into the fourth

quarter, but through the first three quarters, LSU had only 211 total yards, including 98 passing, and accounted for only a field goal as the Tigers fell behind 31-10. Jennings finished 13 of 26 for 157 yards and no touchdowns. He was also sacked three times and took some heavy hits on designed quarterback runs, and Miles indicated that Jennings’ blockers hadn’t done him a lot of fa-

vors when he noted that a lack of “protection is something that makes every quarterback struggle.” New Orleans couldn’t run the ball much either, for that matter, finishing with 89 yards. LSU players were predictably diplomatic in their assessment of the quarterback situation. “Brandon made some plays, and that is what is expected of him,” Dural said. “Coach Miles has

done a great job on letting those two guys have a week of practice to see who’s ready. I can’t say if Brandon should get a starting job. “Every week we go to practice, and those two guys battle,” Dural added. “Whichever one looks like they have the most talent and the coaches feel are most prepared will earn a starting spot.”

The following resolution was jointly offered by the Council: RESOLUTION NO. 2673 A RESOLUTION BY THE TOWN OF GRAND ISLE EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT OF CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 3 (ACT 871 OF THE 2014 REGULAR SESSION OF THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATURE) AND CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 10 (ACT 436 OF THE REGULAR SESSION OF THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATURE), CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS TO ASSIST MUNICIPALITIES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BLIGHTED PROPERTY. WHEREAS, the Town of Grand Isle relies on various sources of revenue to fund services to its citizens, including an annual property tax millage assessed to owners of real property located within the municipal limits and; WHEREAS, the sale of adjudicated property and other aspects of a tax sale is a very complicated process in which many municipalities do not have

the staff nor the necessary resources to ensure the compliance with the requirements to ensure the constitutional protections of the property owners and the public entity and; WHEREAS, currently over 40 public bodies have opted to use cooperative endeavor agreements with private third parties to assist in the tax sale process and; WHEREAS, on January 28, 2014, Louisiana State Supreme Court in the matter of Jackson et al v. City of New Orleans 2012-CA-2742, 2012-CA-2743, January 28, 2014 which in summary, stated the City of New Orleans ordinance authorizing a cooperative endeavor agreement with a third party was unconstitutional based on the provisions of Article 7 Section 25 of the Louisiana Constitution to provide that only the tax collector or their employees may perform the functions of a tax sale and; WHEREAS, the decision in Jackson et al v. City of New Orleans could jeopardize existing cooperative endeavor agreements and in response to the decision, the Louisiana Municipal Association supported HB 488 by Representative Johnny Berthelot which seeks to clarify that pubic bodies have the authority under the Louisiana State Constitution should the body opt to enter into such a contract and; WHEREAS, the ability to enter into a cooperative endeavor agreement with a third party for the purposes of assisting municipalities with the tax sale process has many positive aspects including the ability to protect the constitutional rights of property owners, create a more efficient and less costly process for local governments, and also to ensure that property owners fulfill their obligations as taxpayers; and; WHEREAS, on June 23, 2014, HB 488 became Act 871 and will be placed on the November 4, 2014 election ballot as Constitutional Amendment 3 for the voters of the State of Louisiana to consider whether an authorized agent of a tax collector can assist in the sales tax process and any fees charged may be included in the cost; and WHEREAS, on June 26, 2013, HB 256 became Act 436 of the 2013 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, a measure in which the Louisiana Municipal Association gave its full support and will appear on the November 4, 2014 election ballot as Constitutional Amendment 10 and; WHEREAS, Act 436 seeks to provide for an 18-month redemption period in any parish other than Orleans, for vacant property sold at a tax sale which is considered blighted or abandoned and; LET IT HEREBY BE RESOLVED that the Town of Grand Isle supports the passage of both Constitutional Amendment 3 and Constitutional Amendment 10 on November 4, 2014 as both constitutional amendments will provide valuable tools for municipalities and parishes to address the blighted property issues throughout the state in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of their citizens. Vote thereon as follows: YEAS: Ray Santiny, Lafont, Clifford Santiny, Jr., Resweber, Bladsacker NAYS: 0 ABSENT: 0 This resolution was declared adopted this 9th day of September, 2014. Edmonson cited “express lanes set up at larger OMV offices to deal with simple tasks like license renewals, the expansion of a privatization effort that allows people to renew licenses elsewhere and improvements to the website so people can do more business online. “We continue to work toward bringing that wait time down, Edmonson said. He said the average wait time was 30 minutes or less, but he acknowledged that he was giving special attention to an office in New Orleans where the time in line can be much longer. Sen. Ed Murray, D-New Orleans, said he waited nearly four hours for service at his local motor vehicles office, the one singled out by Edmonson as a problem area. “We need to do something, because it was awful for people to wait three and four hours just to renew a driver’s license, Murray said. Rep. John Bel Edwards, D-Amite, said in rural St. Helena Parish only one worker staffs the OMV of-

fice. Edwards said people have reported going to the office to find it closed because the employee was administering a driving test. Edmonson said the agency is moving staff around to alleviate lengthy waits. He said in small offices they’ve started to set aside specific days for driving tests so the office can send in another employee to help out. A report issued earlier this year by the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Office said wait times have shot up as Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration dropped staffing levels amid continuing budget cuts. When Murray asked if Edmonson needed more people, he said no. Edmonson said the office plans to set up an incentive pay plan to give bonuses to workers that help cut wait times and improve customer service. He said the agency also is trying out self-service vehicle registration kiosks at some locations and is continuing to expand a privatization program that allows outside contractors, known as public tag agents, to handle driver’s license renewals for up to an extra $18 fee.

La. jobless rate rises even as more have jobs JEFF AMY Associated Press

Louisiana’s unemployment rate jumped again in August, as job seekers flood into the labor force faster than they can find jobs. The state’s jobless rate rose to 5.8 percent, up for the fourth straight month. Louisiana’s unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in July, but remains below August 2013’s 6.2 percent. The labor force rose by 15,000 people in August, while about 5,500 more people reported having jobs.

A separate survey shows employer payrolls rose by almost 2,000, slowing after months of stronger gains, but yet another alltime high. Both sets of figures — adjusted to cancel out seasonal changes — were released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The report found 123,000 Louisianans were unemployed in August, up from about 114,000 in July and below the 131,000 in August 2013.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A state appeal court has ruled for New Orleans over control of coastland that brought in $8 million in 2012, including rent from Port Fourchon. The 52,000 acres of coastland includes the land on which the port was built, and has been controlled for a century by the Wisner Donation Trust created by philanthropist Edward Wisner. Much of the revenue goes to the city and the rest to Wisner’s heirs, the Salvation Army, Tulane University and the former Charity Hospital, now controlled by LSU. A 4th Circuit Court of Appeal panel ruled 5-0 Friday that Wisner meant the trust to end Aug. 4, 2014, as attorneys for the city contend. Wisner’s heirs, joined by The Salvation Army and LSU, have been trying to get the courts to declare the trust perpetual, citing a 1920 state law that lets any charitable trust to continue unless a specific provision that would “dissolve, abolish or destroy” the arrangement. The city argued that the 100-year term of the original Wisner trust qualified as such a provision, and the district court and the 4th

Circuit agreed. “The trust provisions set forth a 100-year term for its existence,” Judge Roland Belsome wrote for the appeals court. “Thus, the trust will end on August 4, 2014.” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu hasn’t said what he thinks should happen if the trust is closed, The Advocate reported. City Attorney Sharonda Williams couldn’t be immediately reached and the Wisner heirs’ attorney, Dan Lund, declined to comment Friday, NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reported. The heirs could ask the Louisiana Supreme Court to hear the case.

Arrest reports

The following information is based on reports from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Those individuals have been booked with, not convicted of, the offenses shown. Thibodaux Police Department Joshua Clement, 34. Fugitive. Golden Meadow Police Department Brian Keith Rogers, 39. Domestic abuse battery w/child endangerment.

The 4th Circuit also upheld a ruling by Civil District Judge Pro Tempore Melvin Zeno that Landrieu had not breached his duty to the trust and could remain its trustee. But it overturned Zeno on another matter. Zeno had ruled that Landrieu does not need the trust’s advisory committee to approve city projects for the money; the 4th Circuit said he does need such approval. If the trust is dissolved, the assets apparently would be divided among the entities now getting revenue from the trust.

Checkpoints scheduled for Thursday and Friday, results announced from last week

Pictured is Lieutenant Mark Adams speaking to a driver during a DWI checkpoint on Saturday, September 20. Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will be conducting multiple checkpoints in Lafourche Parish again this week and announced the results of last week’s checkpoints. Deputies will conduct a Highway Safety Checkpoint on Thursday, September 25, and will be checking motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations, expired inspection tags, and other violations. Then on Friday, September 26, deputies will conduct Seat Belt and DWI checkpoints where they will be checking for the aforementioned violations as well as drivers who are possibly impaired. Thursday’s Highway Safety Checkpoint wraps up the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office’s twelve-month campaign to raise awareness for those types of violations and make the highways of the parish safer for all motorists. A similar twelve-month campaign will be announced soon and will begin in October. Last week, a total of 957 vehicles passed through the

Highway Safety Checkpoint conducted along the northbound and southbound lanes of LA Highway 20 near its intersection with LA Highway 304 in Chackbay on Thursday, September 18. During that checkpoint, deputies reported 12 seat belt violations, 10 expired motor vehicle inspection stickers, three improper child restraints, two persons driving under suspension, and one driver with an expired license. Deputies charged three people with Driving While Intoxicated during a DWI checkpoint held this past weekend along the northbound and southbound lanes of LA Highway 1 near Fantastic Acres Boulevard in Raceland. A total of 1,300 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which began Saturday night and continued into the early morning hours of Sunday, September 21. Deputies also charged motorists with three seat belt violations, two child restraint violations, and seven other violations, and they issued nine warnings.

Used Car

A blonde wanted to sell her car, but couldn’t find any buyers. She called her friend for advice, and her friend asked her how many miles she had on her car. “235,000 miles,” the blonde replied. Her friend told her that was the problem. But the blonde’s friend told her that her brother is a mechanic and could put

back the miles to whatever she wanted. So the blonde went to the mechanic and told him to put the miles at 40,000. Two days later the blonde’s friend asked her if she sold the car since her brother dropped the miles. The blonde told her, “Why would I sell the car? There are only 40,000 miles on it!”
