Pedestrian struck and killed in Lafourche Parish
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. Monday evening, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a fatal crash that involved a pedestrian on North Service Road in Lafourche Parish. The crash took the life of 26-year old Jace Sevin of Lockport. The investigation revealed that a 1995 Acura Integra was traveling west on North Service Road, east of LA 653, in Raceland. The Acura was being driven by 18-year old Jean Claude Pierre of Raceland. As the Acura was traveling, it struck Sevin in the westbound lane. Pierre, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured in the crash. Sevin was transported to St. Anne Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries he sustained in the crash. Mid-level drug dealer and associate arrested as agents seize $6,000 in cash and cocaine
Narcotics agents have arrested a mid-level drug dealer and one of her known associates. Victoria Cheramie, age 26, of 322 W. 107th Street in Cut Off, along with Avia Chouest, age 28, of 125 Louviere Lane in Golden Meadow, were arrested on Wednesday. Agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force were conducting surveillance in the Raceland area Wednesday after learning through investigation that Victoria Cheramie might be traveling to the New Orleans area to retrieve a quantity of cocaine. Cheramie is considered to be a mid-level drug dealer in the south Lafourche area and was wanted on two outstanding warrants for distribution of crack cocaine. At around 8:45 p.m., deputies with the Proactive Police Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle fitting the description of a vehicle Cheramie would reportedly be driving.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The books on Louisiana’s last budget year have been closed, but it took a bit of borrowing from this year to make the numbers work. To fill gaps in the budget that ended June 30, the treasury had to dip into dollars slated to pay for state agency operations this year. Treasurer John Kennedy said the state used $24 million from this year’s budget to plug last year’s holes. That’s part of a continuing balancing act used by Gov. Bobby Jindal and state lawmakers that relies on patchwork funding from items like property sales, legal settlements and hurricane recovery spending reimbursements to keep state programs and services operating. Jindal’s top budget adviser, Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols, said Tuesday the budget was balanced and the borrowing was only temporary. “We always knew that fiscal year 2014 was fully funded,” she said in a statement. But Kennedy said there’s a “structural deficit” in the state’s annual spending plans, relying too heavily on uncertain sources of cash and scrambling to fill gaps when the money doesn’t arrive as expected. “At some point, the maneuvers and tricks are going to run out,” he said. While the 2013-14 budget year closed June 30, the year didn’t close for accounting purposes until Aug. 14, and number-crunching has been going on since then to determine how things wrapped up. Jindal and lawmakers balanced last year’s $25 billion budget with more than $400 million in piecemeal financing, plugged into what is called the Overcollections Fund, a sort of catch-all fund in the treasury. Most of that money was earmarked for the state’s public colleges, and the Jindal administration had to take a series of loans from other treasury funds to pay for higher education operations until the dollars arrived. AVONDALE, La. (AP) — The IndyCar series has committed to an April 12 race date for next season’s inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana. Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne joined IndyCar president Mark Miles and other government officials for a formal announcement of the date and other details about the event on Wednesday afternoon at NOLA Motorsports Park, which will host the race. The IndyCar series confirmed in May that it planned to bring a race to the New Orleans area in 2015, but the race calendar for next season had not been set at that time. The 2015 race — the marquee event of three days of festivities and qualifying at the track beginning April 10 — will take place on the same weekend as the French Quarter Festival, a popular music festival held in and around the historic neighborhood for which it is named. “It’s something that was discussed at length,” Miles said. “All the feedback was that it would be fine and there will be ways to do some marketing together.” See IndyCar Page 6-A

“In a Small Pond” By Leroy Martin
“Pop, Shrimp, and Stamps”
First, many thanks for the emails, Facebook and land line comments, even the one from the United Arab Emirates—-and that’s pretty far! This “pop rouge” story centers on the brand name M.B.C., a popular soft drink bottling company that was located in Lockport and owned by the Caillouet family. It was the most popular brand of soft drink in south Lafourche, with the possible exception of Coke, known then only by its formal name Coca Cola. The “pop rouge” was actually a strawberry soda, but no one called it that. They made other flavors and were also distributors of national name brands, but “pop rouge” and M.B.C. orange were by far the most popular. The orange had small bits of orange pulp in it. This was my favorite and I’d give $100 (they only cost a nickel then) to have one right now, and although I’m a type two diabetic, I’d risk a few sips. Mr. Caillouet often made the trip with his route men and one day I heard him say at my grandfather Paul Callais’ grocery store, “people often think M.B.C. means “Made by Cailliout” but actually it’s the initials of my mother’s maiden name.” I kept the craving for many years, and one time at a conference in Chicago I ordered an M.B.C., orange with my meal. As the waiter stared blankly, my boss at the time, Lafourche Assessor Hubert Robichaux, had a good laugh and never let me forget it. The red dye used to make “pop rouge” was eventually taken off the market by the F.D.A. and it then became “pop clair” (clear). The tiny bits of orange pulp were not compatible with modern machines and eventually the company was sold to Barq’s of New Orleans and the brand disappeared from the market. What a pity. In the 1930’s my grandfather opened a gas and grocery store on Highway One in front of his house. When he died in 1939, and with the threat of war bringing gas rationing, blue or red stamps were required for all purchases. The stamps were issued by the government according to family size or job priority, along with other rules and regulations. When the stamps came about, the family closed shop. I remember the gas pump had a glass dome on top which contained fuel dispensed by gravity, and had to be refilled with a hand crank. That was my job after school and on weekends. The thirties were extraordinary years as were 1940 and 1941, until December 6. The next day, December 7, 1941 was the “Day of Infamy,” and our lives would never be the same again. America was united in fighting a “just” war. For the sake of humanity, good prevailed over evil. But during that time, here in the Cajun communities, life went on as usual, if you consider a few hurricanes, some flooding, a paved highway, electricity

and a shrimp strike to be usual. At that time, a 210pound barrel of headless shrimp would bring the trawler five or six dollars so they went on strike, demanding $8.50.
The big shrimp buyers asked “how greedy can they be?” (They sure were greedy … that’s approximately 4cents per pound! WOW!!!) I feel I have been given the privilege of documenting my generation and I will try to make you visualize the prominent personalities I have met, the humorous and the tragic events that I witnessed and the ventures I have been involved in. I doubt very much that I am good enough to do this, but if you stick with me, I’ll give
it my best shot. So much to write about and so little time to write it! In the coming weeks, a boucherie, a charivari and how the common pig contributed so much to mankind. All these things in my head makes me wonder——did a light bulb appear over Thomas Edison’s head the first time he thought of inventing one or can anybody tell me where next year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will be held?

Budget
From 1-A
According to the treasurer’s office, more money poured into the Overcollections Fund than was originally expected, about $419 million, including more cash than anticipated from an anti-fraud initiative in the Department of Revenue. The problem is that Jindal and lawmakers budgeted $443 million from the fund in last year’s budget, according to the treasury, spending more than was projected to be available. Nichols said the patchwork financing “can sometimes face delays and come in a little later than we expect. “But, I don’t consider that a shortfall. FY14 was fully funded and FY15 will be as well, she said. The Jindal administration and lawmakers gave themselves a little padding for this year’s budget, which could help address any gaps. Task force agents arrived on the scene to assist, and Cheramie was taken into custody. She was found to have a bag containing approximately 29.2 grams of cocaine, $3,000 in cash, and drug paraphernalia in her possession. The street value of the cocaine was also nearly $3,000. Agents then executed a search warrant at Cheramie’s West 107th Street residence. Upon arriving they discovered Avia Chouest, one of Cheramie’s known associates, to be at the residence. Chouest also had two active warrants for distribution of crack cocaine and was immediately taken into custody. Agents found additional drug paraphernalia

Cheramie was additionally booked with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of persons under 17 years old. She is being held in lieu of $131,000 bond as set by Judge Walter I. Lanier III. Chouest, meanwhile, is being held in lieu of $65,000 bond as set by Judge John E. LeBlanc, and she is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole. Cheramie’s last arrest was in October 2013 as part of Operation Crackin’ Down where she was charged with two counts of distribution of crack cocaine. Narcotics agents indicate their investigation into Cheramie is still continuing and additional arrests in connection are possible.

NOLA Motorsports Park had requested dates during either late March or in June, which are generally slower periods for the New Orleans tourism industry, but the racing series was unable to make those dates work for its 2015 season. IndyCar, the top North American-based open wheel racing series, has an agreement to bring races to the track for at least the next three seasons, though the hope is to make it a long-term annual event. Miles said the New Orleans area race will continue to be in the spring in future years, but the exact dates could be moved. “We want to be in cities that are compelling for our sponsors and our fans and New Orleans has that kind of reputation, Miles said. “Everybody knows New Orleans is that kind of place and people want to be here for fun. “Our objective is to get beyond the hardcore race fan and build the sport through acquiring more fans, Miles added. “So being in the right places and making sure people have a good time is part of the recipe. NOLA Motorsports Park is a private, $60 million facility about 14 miles southwest of downtown New Orleans. It features a 13-
turn, 2.67-mile road course that has already hosted AMA motorcycle racing and Indy Lights, as well as the Pro Mazda and USF2000 series. The track is also undergoing $2.6 million in improvements designed in part to increase the number of passing opportunities and also to meet the safety standards of high-spec racing, such as IndyCar or NASCAR. The state has also committed 4.5 million from its tourism budget to help with marketing. The track is owned by Dr. Laney Chouest, whose family owns Edison Chouest Offshore, a south Louisiana company which designs, builds and operates supply vessels for offshore oil and gas facilities around the world. Chouest said the track will launch a smartphone application for the race which is expected to allow fans to do everything from finding rest rooms and concession stands to following along with telemetry from the track, such as cars’ speeds, sector times and the G-forces they pull around turns.

Tarpons roll Miller-McCoy, Trojans struggle against Belle Chasse By CASEY GISCLAIR Contributing Writer

the first half played between the teams. With the Tarpons leading 14-0 in the final minutes of the opening half, Miller McCoy standout Gerald Edwards took a kickoff 75 yards to the end zone to cut the Tarpons’ lead to 146. But when McCoy kicked the ball back to the Tarpons, South Lafourche oneupped their foe, as Harvey Allen took the kick and ran it 80 yards for a score. It was a touchdown that served as the icing on the cake for South Lafourche’s 27-12 win – a victory filled with lots of positives and negatives, according to Tarpons coach Dennis Skains. “I thought that we played pretty well, Skains said following the game. “There were some breakdowns and some mistakes, but other than that, we thought the kids started fast, which is something we

emphasized throughout the week. We loved their effort and were happy with a lot of things, but we know that we have to get back to work and continue to improve in all areas. For the Tarpons, the early minutes of the jamboree were arguably their most dominant. South Lafourche struck first in the game, driving the ball 53 yards on nine plays – a drive capped with a four-yard touchdown run from senior halfback Sean Bouzigard. Benjamin Reaux’s successful extra point lifted the score to 7-0. After forcing a turnover later in the opening half, the Tarpons’ offense got back to work when senior Justin Doucet took a jet sweep to the end zone to make the game 14-0. After Doucet’s score is when McCoy got their only points of the opening half on the 75-yard kickoff return from Edwards, which was matched by Allen’s return to make the score 21-6. That lead ballooned even more in the final seconds of the half when junior safety Larry Mack intercepted Lions quarterback Melvin Johnson and took the ball 32 yards into the end zone to make the score 27-6. Throughout the game, the Tarpons generated pressure with their massive front-7, which led to the Lions’ offense being discombobulated throughout the jamboree. Skains said the defense’s effort was a high point in the evening. “We showed flashes of greatness there, Skains said. “We have to work on some things and clean up a lot of the mistakes that we made, because it was far from perfect. But as a coach, when you see those flashes, it’s always promising, because you know that it exists and you know the potential that’s there. We’re going to keep working with them and try and get a few guys some more experience to get everyone ready for the start of the season.
In the second half, the action slowed down as both teams mixed in a lot of backups to prevent injury on the sloppy, soggy field in Galliano. Miller-McCoy scored the only points in the final 15 minutes on a 4-yard touchdown run by Alexander Formen – a score set up by a Tarpons’ turnover. With the jamboree win under its belts, South Lafourche will now look forward to week one of the season. The Tarpons will travel to play Landry-Walker on Friday night in a game that might be the toughest of the season for South Lafourche. Landry-Walker defeated the Tarpons 7-0 last season and are expected to be among the best teams in Louisiana for Class 4A. “It’ll be a challenge. They have loads of athletes, Skains said. “We need to put in a good week of practice and get better every day so we can be prepared to win in what will be a challenging environment. ___

Owens, Air Force run over Nicholls in 44-16 win 8-A
Wednesday, September 3, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
NEAL REID Associated Press
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) — After a promising start, the incessant, pounding rushing attack of Air Force proved to be too much for Nicholls. Jacobi Owens rushed for 233 yards in his Air Force debut and Devin Rushing scored two short touchdowns, helping the Falcons beat the visiting Colonels 44-16 on Saturday and drop Nicholls’ record against FBS opponents to 321. It was the Falcons’ 19th straight win over a team from the Football Championship Subdivision. Nicholls forced Air Force to punt on its first two possessions before Weston Steelhammer sacked Colonels quarterback Kalen Henderson in the end zone for a safety. After a sub-par punt by Nicholls, the Falcons made it 9-0 on a Garrett Brown 5-yard run. “We are going to have to throw it to get it out of there, because I didn’t feel like we could run it out of there on them,” Nicholls coach Charlie Stubbs said. “We just hesitated on it, and they got a nice safety. They got great field position, took
it down and wow.” The Colonels rebounded to tie the game 99 with 13:20 left in the second quarter after Tobias Lofton ran untouched into the end zone from 18 yards out and Francisco Condado booted a 37-yard field goal. It was as close as the Colonels would get. Air Force used its methodical ground game to reel off the next 35 points and build a 44-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Falcons finished with 539 yards rushing, the team’s highest total since 2011. “They got out on the perimeter on us with those pitches on the option and got us out in space,” Stubbs said. “When you get defenders out in space, you’ve got to be tremendous tacklers and be able to get off blocks. We weren’t able to do that.” Henderson, who led the Colonels to a victory over Western Michigan last year, was held to 136 yards passing and was sacked four times. An inability to finish drives plagued Nicholls, and Henderson felt his squad could have kept the game closer in the first half. “We did leave a lot of points out on the field, I think at least two touch-

downs,” Henderson said. “I don’t think anything they did took us out of our game. We were still having some good drives, but it was just one or two plays on each drive that were just making us sputter a bit.” The Colonels lost starting center Brandon Holmes to an injury earlier in the week in practice, and Stubbs said backup Ashton Duhe suffered a broken hand in the first half that took him out of the game. Third-string Brian Hernandez, a true freshman, was called upon to help direct Nicholls’ offense. “We’re battered and bruised,” Stubbs said. “Making all of those calls against all of those fronts, I commend that young man, because the (Duhe injury) happened before halftime.” Owens’ output was the most ever by a Falcons player making his first start, breaking the mark of 218 set by Cody Getz in 2012. It’s also the seventh-most yards in a game all-time at a school known for its vaunted ground game. The Falcons improved to 8-0 in openers under coach Troy Calhoun, who earned his 50th career win at the Academy. Garrett Brown, Broam Hart, Shayne Davern and Paco Solano also scored TDs for the Falcons. Davern is making the switch from linebacker to fullback this season. The Colonels added another touchdown in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter when backup QB Beaux Hebert connected with Darryl Watson II for a 10-yard score. Nicholls has a difficult

After the game, Trojans coach Keith Menard said he was left scratching his head and wondering why his team can’t take their Agame to the playing field. “I’m disappointed,” Menard said. “There’s no question I’m disappointed. I thought we had two great weeks of practice and then we came out and we played like this. I don’t have an answer for that. The good news is we start fresh. We’re 0-0, and we have a week to fix our mistakes.” Self-inflicted wounds are what crushed the Trojans in Friday night’s game. Central Lafourche forced four turnovers throughout the 30 minutes of play between the teams. But a litany of pre-snap penalties, missed blocking assignments and three turnovers of their own kept the Trojans from scoring in the game. On the other side of the field, missed tackles and busted coverages allowed Belle Chasse to put the ball into the end zone three times. The final score of the game for Belle Chasse came when the Cardinals blocked a Central Lafourche punt and took it in for a score to make the game 20-0. A successful 2-point conversion brought the game to its final tally of 22-0. The Trojans open the season on Friday night at home against Franklin. Menard said he knows his team’s effort has to be better for the Trojans to win. The coach admitted that it’d be hard for the team to play much worse than it did on Friday. “It’s all up-hill from here,” Menard said. “The good news is we played pretty bad in the jamboree last year and then came out and played a good first game to start the season. So we’re going to get back on the practice field and look to do the same thing this time around.”
start to its season, playing five of its first six games on the road. “We’ve got our boat loaded, because we’ve got Arkansas next week,” Stubbs said. “It doesn’t get any easier for us. If we can weather the storm, I really think we can get in the hunt in the Southland Conference.”
Saints cut Bailey, Meachem, both kickers
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints included 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, veteran receiver Robert Meachem and both kickers among their final preseason roster cuts Saturday. Receiver Nick Toon was among several young, relatively unproven players who survived the last round of cuts before the Saints begin preparations for their Sept. 7 regular-season opener at Atlanta. Others still with the club include undrafted rookie cornerback Brian Dixon; linebackers Kyle Knox and Kasim Edebali; and offensive lineman Senio Kelemete. New Orleans also held onto to veteran defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick. The Saints brought in Bailey after he was released by Denver. However, Bailey struggled with a foot injury and saw limited action in only the final two preseason games. Meanwhile, Patrick Robinson, a 2010 first-round draft choice, came back strong from a knee injury and apparently won the job. The Saints did not immediately indicate what their intentions were at kicker after their decision to cut both veteran Shayne Graham and rookie Derek Dimke, but they could have in mind one of a number of proven kickers cut by other clubs. When they find a kicker, they’ll have to either cut another player or put one on injured reserve.
The Larose-Cut Off football team, cheerleaders and dance team members recently got together to create spirit signs that they displayed north of the Intracoastal Bridge on LA Highway 1.

5 things to know about Louisiana’s election MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Here are five things to know about Louisiana’s Nov. 4 ballot, which includes all six U.S. House seats and a heavily watched battle for the U.S. Senate: LAST ELECTION IN THE COUNTRY Louisiana has a unique “jungle primary system in which all candidates, regardless of party, run against each other and the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff if no contender gets more than 50 percent of the vote. That means while states around the nation will wrap up their congressional election cycle in the Nov. 4 general election, several of Louisiana’s congressional seats aren’t expected to be
decided until a Dec. 6 runoff. Depending on the results around the country, a December runoff in Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race could decide which party controls the chamber. SENATE RACE SPENDING Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race is expected to be the highest-spending congressional election in the state’s history. Already, Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu has raised $14.1 million this election cycle, while her chief Republican challenger, U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy, has brought in $8.6 million. Tea party favorite Rob Maness, a Republican and retired Air Force colonel making his first bid for office, has picked up more than $1.3 million in donations, according to the

most recent fundraising reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. The figures don’t include millions of dollars in advertising poured into the state by third-party groups. EASY RIDE FOR SOME INCUMBENTS Five of Louisiana’s six U.S. House members are running for re-election: Republicans Steve Scalise, Charles Boustany, John Fleming and Vance McAllister, and Democrat Cedric Richmond. The sixth, Republican Bill Cassidy, is trying to oust Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu from her seat. McAllister is trying to rebound from a cheating scandal and faces a crowded field of opponents. But the state’s four other House incumbents haven’t attracted any well-funded challengers. FOUR DECADES LATER Attention on the competition for the open 6th District congressional seat has centered on one man: former Gov. Edwin Edwards, the popular 87year-old who left federal prison only a few years ago. A Democrat who shaped the Louisiana political scene for half a century, Edwards is best known for his four terms as the state’s governor. Many forget Edwards once served four terms in the U.S. House. But he’d return to a much different Washington than he left 42 years ago. Edwards was in Congress from 1965 to 1972, first elected when Lyndon Johnson was president and ending his House tenure when Richard Nixon was in the White House. CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES Louisianians may need to do some studying before they head into the voting booth. Also on November’s ballot, but often overlooked by voters, will be 14 proposals to rewrite the state constitution. The secretary of state’s office has a list of the amendments that voters will face online at: http://1.usa.gov/1zbqRrH.

BRIEF La. business owner arrested in missing funds case
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Denham Springs business owner is charged with 62 counts each of computer fraud, bank fraud, theft, identity theft and monetary instrument abuse. Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Col. John Fortunato tells the Advocate that Kristin Koenig was arrested Friday after one of her clients reportedly discovered more than $500,000 missing from its accounts. Koenig owns Accurate Business Services LLC. Fortunato says Koenig allegedly wrote checks to herself rather than the companies with which her client was doing business. Fortunato says Koenig allegedly had changed her client’s computer records to indicate the checks were going to the companies owed, but she diverted the funds for her own use instead. It was not immediately clear whether Koenig has an attorney. ___________
Halliburton reaches $1.1B oil spill settlement
HOUSTON (AP) — Halliburton says it has agreed to pay $1.1 billion to settle a substantial portion of plaintiff
claims arising from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The settlement, which is subject to court approval, will be paid into a trust until appeals are resolved over the next two years. Halliburton was BP PLC’s cement contractor on the drilling rig that exploded in the Gulf in April 2010, killing 11 workers and triggering the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. The deal will settle claims assigned to Halliburton as a result of BP’s settlement in 2012 and punitive damages from the loss of property or commercial fishing activity resulting from the oil spill. ___________

Shaun the shaggy Aussie sheep finally shorn smooth
SYDNEY (AP) — Shaun the shaggy Australian sheep has at last been shorn smooth. But the woolly wanderer wasn’t the wooliest of them all. The sheep apparently had been hiding for years on a farm on the island state of Tasmania and had never been shorn. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday that Shaun lost 23.5 kilograms (52 pounds) of wool at his first haircut. Owners Peter and Netty Hazel had hoped Shaun would beat a record held by a now-deceased New Zealand sheep named Shrek. Shrek rose to fame in 2004 after he was found hiding in caves on his farm, having evaded the annual shearing roundups for seven years. He had 27 kilograms (60 pounds) of wool shorn off his body.

Goodwill store staff discovered the skull while sifting through donations on July 16. A spokeswoman says it could have been gifted up to a week prior to its discovery. In addition to the challenge of raising a child without another parent in the household, single mothers face many of the same challenges faced by married parents, only they must do so on just one income. Stress is a reality for many single parents, and much of that stress can be traced to the financial burdens of single parenthood. Single parents often find themselves looking for ways to save money, and the following are a handful of ways to do just that. * Resist the urge to

overextend your budget. Many expenses, such as groceries and housing, are necessities. But single parents know there is also tremendous pressure to spend money on things that have nothing to do with need. For example, come the holiday season, single parents may feel pressured to buy youngsters everything on their holiday wish list. It’s easy to succumb to such pressure out of guilt or in an attempt to make sure kids don’t feel cheated when they receive less gifts than their friends. But if succumbing to such pressure will stretch your budget, this might have grave consequences down the road. The same approach can be taken when making big-ticket purchases. If a new car will bust the budget, then shop for a preowned model, ideally one that is dealer certified and still covered under its original warranty. * Explain your financial situation to your kids. Keeping kids in the dark about your finances may lead to trouble or create undue stress. For instance, if kids are not aware that money is drug in presence of persons under 17 years old. tight, then they may struggle to understand why they can’t have the latest musthave sneakers or fill up the grocery cart on trips to the store. But single mothers who explain the idea of a budget and define that budget for their kids will likely find their kids are willing to cooperate and make good partners with regard to staying within the budget. * Pay bills on time. Allowing bills to go unpaid or routinely paying them late is only adding stress to a situation that, for many single mothers, is already stressful enough. Interest payments and penalties for paying late can quickly add up and turn a significant but manageable bill into an albatross that can loom over your finances for months if not years. If your credit card bills have already spiraled out of control, consult the credit card company to see if you can work out a payment
plan in which interest will stop accruing so long as you continue to make agreedupon monthly payments. Companies may be willing to work with you, and such a payment plan is less likely to have a negative impact on your long-term credit, something that cannot be said for declaring bankruptcy. * Trim entertainment costs. Another way for single mothers to save money is to trim the amount of money they spend each month on entertainment. Cable television has become increasingly expensive in recent years, but single mothers have alternatives that can be considerably less expensive. In lieu of paying for cable television, single mothers can subscribe to a streaming service, such as Netflix or Hulu Plus, that charges a fraction of what cable companies charge but still offers a substantial amount of current content.
The aging process has a way of making people riskaverse. Financial advisors typically recommend that men and women steer clear of risky investments as they age, and men and women over 50 often make lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of developing certain medical conditions. As women age, some may feel exercise is simply too risky. Hormonal changes brought on by aging decrease a woman’s bone density, and that fact makes many women over 50 hesitant to embrace exercise. But exercise plays a key role in helping women over 50 secure their long-term health and reduce their risk of injury. * Exercise promotes independence. Some women feel that exercising after 50 increases their risk of injury, which can make them overly dependent on their loved ones. But exercise, in particular strength training, slows bone deterioration, helping bones stay stronger longer and reducing a woman’s risk of suffering a potentially debilitating injury. Independence is especially important to seniors, many of whom spent years planning their retirements and awaiting the day when they would be free to travel at their leisure. Daily exercise can help women maintain that independence by reducing their risk of injury and other ailments that can be confining. * Exercise can improve sleep. Some women who are fighting fatigue may feel that routine exercise will only make them more tired. But exercise actually improves energy levels and makes it easier to get a better night’s rest. Numerous studies have shown that routine exercise can im-
prove sleep quality and even increase energy levels throughout the day, something that should raise an eyebrow among women who do not exercise but routinely find themselves fighting fatigue. A more quality night’s rest improves vitality, making it easier for women to exercise and make it through the day without feeling fatigued. * Exercise benefits those with limited mobility. Women over 50 with limited mobility may feel that exercise serves no purpose because of their disability or physical condition. But even women confined to wheelchairs or those forced to walk with a cane or walker can benefit from cardiovascular exercise and even light strength training. Such exercises can improve a woman’s range of motion while reducing her risk of heart disease. * It’s never too late to start exercising. Many aging women feel their time to embrace exercise has long since passed. But it’s never too late to start exercising. Women should take a conservative approach when exercising after a long hiatus, beginning with a slow walk around the neighborhood or a local park. Walking is a great beginner’s exercise, as it provides a good cardiovascular workout while working a variety of muscle groups. As your body readjusts to physical activity, gradually increase the intensity of your exercise sessions, adding some strength training, ideally under the supervision of a professional. Always stretch immediately after each exercise session, and give your body ample time to recover, especially when you begin your new regimen.
Exercise and the older woman

Fishing Trip
A man called home to his wife and said, “Darling, I have been asked to go fishing up in Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so could you please pack enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and fishing box. We’re leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! Please pack my new blue silk pajamas.” The wife thinks this
sounds a bit fishy but being the good wife she is, did exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he came home a little tired but otherwise looking good. The wife welcomed him home and asked if he caught many fish. He said, “Yes! Lots of salmons, some bluegills, and a few swordfishes. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?” The wife replied, “I did, dear. Your new blue silk pajamas are in your fishing box!”
