BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s expected deficit for last year is driven at least partially by people and businesses cashing in on more tax refunds and credits than anticipated, Gov. Bobby Jindal’s chief budget adviser said Friday. Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols said it’s likely the state closed the books on the last budget year in the red. But she said the numbers aren’t complete, and she wouldn’t release any details about how large she expects the gap to be in the 2014-15 fiscal year that ended June 30. House Speaker Chuck Kleckley and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Fannin have both said they’ve been told by the Jindal administration that the state ended last year with a deficit. Among the causes, Nichols said tax credit and refund filings are higher than expected, particularly in the film tax credit program. “The largest issue that we’re working to finalize is just the general accounting of everything and how the tax refunds play into that number,” she said. Lawmakers enacted a new cap on the film tax

Animal shelter closes temporarily
The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter closed some of its services this week after a dog that had been kept there tested positive for a bacterial disease called leptospirosis. Shelter Manager Hilary Knight said a dog came into the shelter on Sept. 8 and left 12 days later. During that time, the dog showed signs of liver failure that staff members attributed to heartworms, a much more common condition than leptospirosis in our area, Knight said. A rescue group that had taken the dog discov-
ered it had leptospirosis and notified the shelter Friday. Knight said the shelter will be closed to the public until at least Thursday giving the staff time to determine if other animals have been infected with the disease, which is contagious to animals and humans and is primarily spread through urine, Knight said. Knight said that in addition to continuing routine cleanings with bleach, the leptospirosis vaccine See Shelter Page 7-A

The 2nd Annual “La Fete des Vieux Temps”, or Festival of Old Times, will once again be held this weekend, October 2, 3 and 4. La Fetes Des Vieux Temps will be held at the Lafourche Parish Tourist Center in Raceland at the junction of LA 1 and Highway 90. Craft booths will line the entrance to the existing pavilion already on the site, housing both bands and food booths. “This festival is all about preserving our community,” said festival chairman Terry Arabie. “We wanted to preserve our culture while having our own festival in the central part of the parish that incorporates the best elements of the older festivals.” “We wanted to bring back all the great foods from our area’s festivals … the ones we all remembered and love,” Arabie said. “Fresh, made-at-the-fest cracklings, white beans and alligator sauce piquante, shrimp, and seafood of all kinds.” Beverages will be plenty with beer and soft drinks on the list. The Festival will also feature great Cajun food, live music, pay-one-price rides, several booths of handmade crafts, an old fashioned hog boucherie, a Sauce Piquante cook off, (contact Woody Collins at 985400-9298 to enter), a cane syrup mill, and auctions. What makes this festival different than most festivals will be the demo area. Featured attractions include boats from the Traditional Wooden Boats Museum, basket weaving, moss doll and garfish demos, sugar cane syrup cooking, along with dancing from members of the United Houma Nation. And don’t forget the Cajun dancing! One thing the organizers are extremely proud of is the mass that will be held on Sunday, October 4th under the pavilion at 9 a.m. “Volunteers, auction items, setting up the booths, tearing down … we can always use help,” says Arabie. “We are not doing this for monetary gain or to get rich by any means. So any help is greatly appreciated.” See Festival Page 3-A
Andre Adams, of team Geaux Tiger, enjoyed cooking up his special green onion sausage fried rice during the 2nd Annual Hibachi Cook Off and Car Show at the Larose Civic Center Saturday under the pavilion. Competition featured five categories: rice, meat, seafood, open and dessert. Visitors where able to sample contestant’s dishes, participate in cooking demonstrations, dance to live music and enjoy the many classic and custom cars and rat rods on display. Staff photo by Babs

Tax Credit From 1-A
credits in the current budget year to help close a massive shortfall and protect public colleges and health care services from steep cuts. A maximum of $180 million in film tax credits can be cashed in annually. The cap kicked in July 1 and expires after three years. Nichols said it’s likely people filed for film credits earlier than usual to ensure they could use them, rather than risk running into problems with the cap. The Jindal administration will disclose the size of the deficit in mid-October, at a meeting of the joint House and Senate budget committee. Treasurer John Kennedy said his office has done preliminary estimates that suggest the shortfall will top $100 million. Auditors will comb through the figure, with a final number not expected until January. If lawmakers and the Jindal administration wait to deal with the deficit until the auditing is complete, that would leave the problem to a new governor and new Legislature, elected this fall. Jindal is term-limited. His successor will take office in mid-January. But Nichols said the governor has already enacted hiring and spending freezes in this year’s $25 billion budget that could help close the gap left from last year. She said it’s possible the Jindal administration could do more to address the shortfall. “I’m certainly not saying we won’t take action,” she said. Any deficit will have to be closed before the end of the current budget year, which closes June 30. Word of the latest gap comes as Jindal is running for the GOP presidential nomination and pitching himself as a strong man-

Study finds Asians will surpass Hispanics as largest immigrant group heading to US
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a major shift in immigration patterns over the next 50 years, Asians will have surged past Hispanics to become the largest group of immigrants heading to the United States, according to estimates in a new immigration study. The study looks in detail at what will happen by 2065, but the actual tipping point comes in 2055. An increase in Asian and Hispanic immigration also will drive U.S. population growth, with foreignborn residents expected to make up 18 percent of the country’s projected 441 million people in 50 years, the Pew Research Center said in a report being released Monday. This will be a record, higher than the nearly 15 percent during the late 19th century and early 20th century wave of immigration from Europe. Today, immigrants make up 14 percent of the population, an increase from 5 percent in 1965. The actual change is expected to come in 2055, when Asians will become the largest immigrant group at 36 percent, compared with Hispanics at 34 percent. White immigrants to America, 80 percent back in 1965, will hover somewhere between 18 and 20 percent, with black immigrants in the 8 percent to 9 percent range, the study said. ___
THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — A Thibodaux woman remains jailed after lying about a killing and driving off in a sheriff’s patrol car as deputies investigated. Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says Loralyn Boudreaux, 34, approached deputies Thursday evening screaming about a death, telling them that the killer and victim were still inside a neighboring house. When deputies went inside, Webre says Boudreaux sped away in their patrol car. Deputies found the abandoned car more than a mile away, finding Boudreaux arguing with a man outside a house. As deputies arrested her, Webre says Boudreaux punched one in the face. Webre says deputies found guns and drug paraphernalia at the first house, later finding what appears to be methamphetamine. Boudreaux is jailed in the Lafourche Parish on multiple charges, with bail set at $32,000. ___

Multiple media outlets report that about one year ago, law enforcement officials were looking for Jovaughn Jackson, now 20 years old, for violating his parole. While searching his house, police found a note that read, “Catch me if you can.” Jackson became the Hammond Police Department’s most wanted person with 21 outstanding felony warrants. Police say they found Jackson early Monday morning hiding in a house’s crawl space while authorities were surveilling homes in a neighborhood where they believed Jackson to be. Officers arrested Jackson on 7 burglary counts, eight firearms counts and various other felonies. ___

Tarpons top Trojans in thriller Gazette Sports Reports
Friday night’s annual date between South Lafourche and Central Lafourche was a thriller – an exciting game from start to finish that kept fans on the edges of their seats on both sides of the jampacked stadium in Mathews. But when the final whistle had blown, it was the Tarpons who had again gotten the best of their cross-town rivals, handing Central Lafourche its first loss of the season. With the Tarpons up 27-21 late in Friday night’s

game, Central (who was out of timeouts) pushed the ball all the way down to the Tarpons 6-yard-line with 51 seconds to play. But instead of the Trojans getting a go-ahead and likely game-winning touchdown, the South Lafourche defense stiffened. The Tarpons bottled up a run play on first down and then sacked Trojans quarterback Austin Aucoin on second down, dropping him to the 11-yard-line. After the sack, the panicked Trojans rushed to the line of scrimmage to try and spike the ball to stop the clock, but they never got there in time. As Aucoin took the desperation snap, officials blew their whistles because the scoreboard clock read 0:00. The game was over and the Tarpons had won 27-21, improving to 2-2 in the process, while dropping Central Lafourche to 3-1. The coaches on both sides shook hands and shared a moment after the game, each showing their mutual respect for the other. When asked to comment, they both said that Friday’s battle was one of the reasons why high school football is so special. The Tarpons have now

You can’t ask for anything more,” South Lafourche coach Dennis Skains said. “We played well and found a way to win. That’s a good Central Lafourche team out there. Coach Menard does an excellent job, and he’s a pain in the neck to scheme against. Our kids worked hard and got better this week. We made our share of mistakes, but we buckled down at the end and kept them out of the end zone.” “We just ran out of time,” Trojans coach Keith Menard added. “We made too many mistakes, and we knew South Lafourche would be ready to play. What a game. In this rivalry lately, it seems like South Lafourche always gets the big play to win the game, and they did it again. But the fans got their money’s worth. What a game this one was. Next time, we need to just make a play to go win it at the end.” Indeed it was a great game — one in which the Tarpons used all three phases to have success. The Tarpons got the ball first and drove the ball down the field for a touch-
down – a short scamper by junior Jaydon Cheramie to take a 6-0 lead. The Trojans battled back and went straight down the field on their first drive to take the lead on a four-yard scoring run by halfback Nelton Allen. After a successful extra point, Central Lafourche led 7-6 late in the first quarter. But after that, the Tarpons led the rest of the way. After the teams traded unsuccessful offensive possessions, South Lafourche blocked a Trojans punt. Henri Terrebonne hopped on top of the ball in the end zone to give the Tarpons a 13-7 lead after a Brannon Lee extra point. The Tarpons extended that lead to 20-7 at halftime thanks to a long option pitch from Cheramie to halfback Corbin Allen that ended in an easy touchdown run. “We had a great offensive scheme this week,” Skains said. “Coach (Jared) Landrum did a great job trying to figure out their blitzes. We were able to time a few right and pop out some big plays off of those to get our offense moving the ball down the field.” But it was far from over. The Trojans got the ball first to start the second half and scored easily – a
68-yard pass from Aucoin to receiver David Robinson that cut the lead to 20-14 after an extra point. But on South Lafourche’s first play after the touchdown, the Tarpons answered back on a 67-yard touchdown run from Allen to put South Lafourche out in front 2714 with 10 minutes in the third quarter. “When they came back and scored on that very first play, that was a huge play in the football game,” Menard said. “That changed everything.” The Trojans never quit and fought until the end. Nelton Allen scored on the first play of the fourth
quarter to make the score 27-21. That set the stage for the late-game heroics. Central Lafourche started its drive inside their own 20-yard-line with just less than two minutes to play. They worked it all the way to the South Lafourche 6-yard-line, but never got closer and then ran out of time. “This means a lot to our kids,” Skains said. “This is bragging rights. Those seniors will be talking about this one for a long, long time.” South Lafourche will travel to take on Plaquemines on Friday while the Trojans will host H.L. Bourgeois.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre’s son, Jay, turned his first collegiate catch into a 38-yard touchdown in Colorado’s 48-0 rout of Nicholls State on Saturday. Jared Bell picked off two passes for Colorado and Nelson Spruce set another school receiving record. Even with starting running back Michael Adkins II out, the Buffs ran for 358 yards and five TDs and outgained the Colonels 636 yards to 166. Colorado took 71 of its 93 snaps in Nicholls’ territory and the Colonels took just three of their 56 snaps in Buffaloes’ territory.
“We’d get it to the 30 or 40 but we couldn’t get it across the 50,” Nicholls State QB Tuskani Figaro said. The Buffs led 24-0 at halftime but they also stalled twice just shy of the goal line. Christian Powell fumbled at the 2 following a 12-yard run and linebacker Hezekiah White recovered. And Liufau was stuffed on a fourth-and-inches sneak from the 6. Those were the only highlights for the Colonels (0-3), who lost for the 21st straight time.

No. 9 LSU trying to address errors before they get costly BRYAN LAZARE, Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU coach Les Miles wants his players to realize that the margin for error their talent has given them early this season will shrink as the stakes rise, and that sloppiness will eventually catch up to the ninth-ranked Tigers if they don’t clean up mental errors soon. “We have a talented team which can be dominant at times, Miles said. “But, we play too close because of those penalties. LSU committed 14 penalties in a 34-24 victory at Syracuse last Saturday. On offense, there were four false starts as well as an illegal formation penalty, the last of which nullified an 87yard touchdown run by Leonard Fournette, who still finished with 244 yards rushing and two TDs in spite of that. In addition, five major penalties against the defense occurred during all three Syracuse touchdown drives. Safety Rickey Jefferson and cornerback Kevin Toliver were called for pass interference. Toliver nullified an interception by Jefferson. Nickel back Dwayne Thomas was called for grabbing a face mask. Defensive end Lewis Neal and linebacker Deion Jones were hit with personal foul penalties. Three weeks into the season, the Tigers are averaging nine penalties for 86 yards per game. “We’re on it, Miles said. “We’re going to work at it and get it fixed. Miles said that the crowd noise at the Carrier Dome was a likely factor in the false starts. Yet one of his offensive linemen offered a different reason. “False starts are the result of a lack of focus, senior offensive tackle Vadal Alexander said. “You can’t have penalties like that. The crowd noise is less a factor. There are techniques we have to handle crowd noise and we didn’t use them. That was a case of us not being focused. Despite remaining unbeaten, the Tigers (3-0) dropped in the Top 25 Poll from eighth last week to ninth this week as they prepare for a visit by Eastern Michigan on Saturday night. The Tigers said their sloppiness wasn’t limited to penalties at Syracuse, but also execution. Even though Fournette had a huge day running the football, the holes were not there as often as the previous week against Auburn. Fournette met more resistance at the line of scrimmage, sometimes using his strength to plow through it, sometimes not. Fournette had 17 yards in losses against the Orange defense. In addition, quarterback Brandon Harris was sacked twice. The Tigers offensive line had yielded only

Saints say close results in 0-3 start leave reason for hope BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro hears the panic in the voices of football fans in and around New Orleans. He does not, however, hear it in the locker room. At least, not yet. The Saints are winless after three games, but they’ve been competitive in all three, giving them at least a measure of hope they can find a way to start winning in time to remain relevant in the NFC. Their next chance comes Sunday night in the Superdome against the Dallas Cowboys. “You know it’s coming when some team’s 0-3; the sky is falling outside of here, Vaccaro said. “You know we are going to hear it, but we just have to stick together and focus on Dallas. We have a great locker room. We are all pretty close, a lot closer than last year. So I think this adversity isn’t as big an issue as it would have been last year. Last year, the Saints lost their first two games. They wound up 7-9 and out of the playoffs. This season, NFC South foes Carolina and Atlanta are already 3-0, meaning the Saints are already three games out of first place. “It’s certainly a hole. There is no way to sugarcoat that, coach Sean Payton said. “We can’t go play this game quick enough and because, listen, there is that since of urgency to get a win. Then again, the Saints have at least one reason to be pleased that kickoff isn’t until Sunday night as opposed to, say, Thursday night. That reason is the health of quarterback Drew Brees, who on Sunday missed his first start because of an injury in his career (although he was benched based on performance during his first few NFL seasons with San Diego). Brees is optimistic he’ll return soon from a bruised rotator cuff in his right
(throwing) shoulder, but Payton said Monday it was too soon to say when exactly that would be. Then again, Payton has often displayed an inclination to preserve any element of mystery he can in the week leading up to a game. “I would say optimistic, and yet we’ll just pay attention to his symptoms and strength, Payton said about Brees’ chances of playing this Sunday. “I don’t know that there’s more clarity. The thing that’s positive is the progress daily. If Brees cannot play, the Saints can at least be confident in their ability to move the ball regardless, given the numbers backup Luke McCown put up in his first start since 2007. McCown went 31 of 38 for 310 yards in a 27-22 loss at Carolina. He had the Saints in range of a goahead touchdown inside the final two minutes, but his pass intended for Brandin Cooks in the end zone was intercepted by Josh Norman, who made a leaping, twisting catch. New Orleans got the ball back with just 10 seconds left near midfield, setting up — for the second straight week — a final desperation pass as time ran out. The Saints also had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes of their Week 1 loss at Arizona, but could not move the ball and wound

heavily favored; the Tigers opened as 46-point favorites. Regardless of the score, Miles wants to see his team play a cleaner game. “We will bring awareness of the penalties to the players, Miles said. “They
have goals for the season. It’s about our path and what we want to accomplish as a team. All in all, I am very glad to be in the position we are in right now. We are in pursuit of a penalty-free game and that’s what we’ll do.

Cornerback Brandon Browner, who has played for the past two Super Bowl winners, insisted his latest
club has the talent to turn the season around. “You need to continue to come to work with a positive attitude and try to get better, he said. “We’ve been in every game so far. It’s come down to the last two minutes. We just have to find a way to finish at the end of the game. ___

Horse Sense
An out-of-towner drove his car into a ditch in a desolated area. Luckily, a local farmer came to help with his big strong horse named Buddy. He hitched Buddy up to the car and yelled, “Pull, Nellie, pull!” Buddy didn’t move. Then the farmer hollered, “Pull, Buster, pull!” Buddy didn’t respond. Once more the farmer commanded, “Pull, Coco, pull!”
Nothing. Then the farmer nonchalantly said, “Pull, Buddy, pull!” and the horse easily dragged the car out of the ditch. The motorist was most appreciative and very curious. He asked the farmer why he called his horse by the wrong name three times. The farmer said, “Oh, Buddy is blind, and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn’t even try!”

“In a Small Pond By Leroy Martin
Hal, KTIB and me
Having been challenged in court since 1948 by radio station KCIL in Houma, La Terre, Inc., Ferdinand Block, President and partners Joe Silverberg, Ed Jackson and Sam Lawson finally obtained an FCC license and an engineer, Art Backman, who built and put KTIB on the

air on December 24, 1953. On December 20, 1953, Mr. Block came to the Assessor’s office and asked me to host a Saturday afternoon program on KTIB. So, that Christmas Eve, I knocked off at noon from the Assessor’s office and met Mr. Art Backman at the new station located
on the second floor of the Lafourche Comet building on Jackson Street. “Mr. Block told me about you, he said, and before I could say a word he handed me a stack of records and said, “I’ve been here since sunup and I need to go to lunch, fill up three hours with whatever music you find, and out the door he went. I had broadcast with my band many times from a studio but I knew nothing about a control room with dials, switches, tape machines, turntables and a teletype spitting out news 24 hours a day. But Mr. Backman thought I did. I was scared to death but I put a 78 RPM record on, switched on the mike and declared to the world: “Heyeee! A big howdy comon sa va to my cousans, couseens, unts and ancles (sic). This is Leroy Martin with Country Correl and here’s Lafourche’s own Vin Bruce with his Columbia hit Fille de Village. I collapsed in my chair and muddled through three hours making every mistake and faux pas in the book. Finally Mr. Backman returned so I put on a record and said, “That’s it for me, so long and save your confederate money, boys, the South’s gonna rise again. Not political correct but those were my opening and closing remarks for the next 30 years, although at the time I was sure they
would never let me enter the building again. Mr. Block and partners now owned a radio station with two apprentice announcers, an engineer/manger who knew little about the business, and maybe a cajun Disc Jockey, although that term was not yet in use. Successful in their businesses, the owners were about to enter a world they knew little about ‌ show business! It might have been divine intervention that caused a young man named Hal Benson to apply for a job in January 1954. He had a resume that included experience in radio broadcasting, news, interviews, programs, sales, sports and management. The La Terre businessmen had been around the block (no pun intended) a few times, so he was hired. It was evident immediately that he knew radio inside out and within two weeks, Mr. Backman was gone and Hal Benson became manager. KTIB was off and running. The first thing he did was bring down two crackerjack radio personalities from Memphis who had worked with him, Jean Bettis, a writer, broadcaster and office manager, Marie Servino, sales manager and program director, and experienced WDSU announcer Roy Hill. They revamped the programs, adding a talk show dialogue, book and movie revues, contempo-
rary music, put the emphasis on local news, and Hal began remote broadcasting live high school sports. Mr. Benson called me to his office. He was nice and articulate and asked me, “What do you do on your Saturday afternoon show? “What do I do? Have fun, play records, chat on the phone with the listeners and play their request like Ernest Tubb, Tommy Dorsey or Bob Wills. “You combine Ernest Tubb and Tommy Dorsey? He asked. “We’ll do something about that but now
read this. I did and thought what is a Neilson survey? “Mr. Benson, I answered, “I really don’t need this job. I’m sorry I messed up. I was doing something I knew nothing about. Good luck on your new job, but I quit, and got up. “That’s not what I called you about, He said. His next words brought me a life changing experience that I’ll tell you about later. BYE NOW!
