Sentencing delayed again for convicted Cut Off man
Officials warn of possible scam involving parish animal shelter
Parish officials are cautioning residents about misleading solicitations regarding the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter. Several residents have reportedly received phone calls and mail solicitations where the caller/sender is asking for funding and suggesting that the money helps fund the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter. The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter is operated and maintained by Lafourche Parish Government through funding provided in the annual budget. Lafourche Parish Government does not solicit any additional funding from residents by phone or otherwise. Anyone who receives a phone call or correspondence wherein funds are being solicited on behalf of the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter should consider it a scam and report it to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985) 448-2111.
S e n tencing for R o b e r t Chouest, 32, of Cut Off, who Robert Chouest was convicted of second-degree murder in a 2013 shooting, was delayed Tuesday for the second time. Chouest is now set for a hearing and possible sentencing May 20 before state District Judge John LeBlanc. Judge LeBlanc found Chouest guilty Jan. 29 for shooting Shawn Galjour, 41, of Larose, in the early morning of May 22, 2013. Galjour, as reported in the Daily Comet, had been lying in Chouest’s grandparents’ driveway near the defendant’s home on ABC Lane. Chouest faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence. His formal sentencing was originally set for Feb. 24, but it was delayed because his attorney, George Ledet Jr., of Cut Off, requested more time to file post-trial motions. On Tuesday, LeBlanc agreed to give Ledet 30 more days to file those motions after Ledet said he was still working on them. It was Chouest’s second trial in this case. See Chouest Page 3-A

Sheriff ask Council to reinstitute TDC policy
Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre addressed the Parish Council on Tuesday, asking them to reinstitute the “Traffic Calming Device (TDC) policy. TDC’s, or speed bumps, are “safe, effective, affordable, and ubiquitous, said Webre. Because of the geographical characteristics of our parish, with atypical subdivisions featuring long streets without stops, speed bumps are necessary, he said. “I am an advocate of speed bumps since 1992 when the first ordinance was introduced. Simply writing tickets every day does not solve the problem of speeding. He explained the process by which a citizen or group can request speed bumps. First, an application must be made by a resident(s) requesting the devices to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. If 50% or more of a neighborhood agree with the application, LPSO conducts a traffic analysis in that area. If the need is there, two-thirds of those residents must agree to the placement of the devices.

A package is sent to the Council for approval, and Public Works would then install the speed bumps. “Each year, LPSO appropriates $50,000 out of our budget to help fund the program, said Webre. In the past, the parish typically matched that amount. Although the program was terminated in 2012, it was later reinstated without funding in the same year. But Councilman Jerry Lafont noted that the funding amount would be exhausted right away as each device costs about $2000. “$50,000 will do one subdivision. Look at back of LCO (Larose-Cut Off School). We ate up that budget in one area, he said. Lafont asked Webre to consider putting more money into the program. With a matching amount from the parish, the program could be more effective, he said. Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle was in agreement with Webre. “I think we have the money, and it’s a good idea, he said. See Council Page 3-A

Letters and Opinions America needs the message of Easter By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist
The story of Easter is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Biblical story is about his crucifixion, burial and resurrection from the grave. His victory over the grave brought exhilaration to his disciples and other Christians who were beaten down by fear and exhaustion. After seeing Jesus again their strength and lives were renewed to go forward and live their lives proclaiming Jesus as the way to Knowing God and experiencing peace. Ever since the first Easter many more have found new life and renewed strength in the message of the risen Christ. The noise level of our country is often shattering. We are engulfed by the noise of politicians, cable news, negativism, human failure and comparing ourselves to others. All people experience disappointments and pain. All of these and much more are a part of this life. You can’t escape it and the more you live the more you will experience. As humans we have grown gifted in adding to each other’s hurts. We hurt with our speech, indifference and sometimes with outright condemnation. Jesus was the recipient of cruelty from the hands of the supposedly good people of his day. They were the religious crowd. They hated Jesus and pushed for his death. Some of the best people I’ve met in life go to church. Some of the meanest people I’ve met go to church. Billy Graham said years ago that the Devil doesn’t fight churches but that he joins them.
You can find Jesus in most churches and you can usually find the devil. Wherever you find people you will find good people acting like people. People act like people at church, political gatherings and places of employment. Jesus was different. He acted like a man, but he was different. There was something incredibly renewing, saving, life giving and joyful about being around Jesus. The disciples loved him and loved being around him. How many people do you love being around? By the way are you fun to live with? Does your spouse or children enjoy being around you? We want to spend time with some people. Some people just drain us. They look like a commercial for an iodine bottle. They are miserable and make everybody else miserable. I don’t want to be that kind of person. I don’t want to be around people like this either. Jesus came to live. He died. He was treated the
way ISIS would treat someone, except these were supposedly the good religious people of his day. There was nothing good about them. His story is one of overcoming the grave. He brought joy to people like Thomas who touched his hands and exclaimed my Lord and my God. Jesus was already in the practice of giving joy and new life. He gave it to a woman caught in adultery and was about to be stoned. He gave joy and new life to a leper who no one else would touch. He gave joy to the beaten down, the ostracized and those frazzled out by life. This year why not take some time and focus on Easter? Jesus once told his disciples, “The Thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” John 10:10. We need Easter in America. We have become a discouraged nation. We need some new life and joy. This was the message and life of Jesus.

Chouest From 1-A
The first, held last year, ended with the jury unable to reach a verdict. The jury forewoman said in court last year that the majority had voted guilty. Chouest later waived his right to a jury trial, meaning LeBlanc was to determine his fate. Chouest testified during his trial that he’d been up for three days and consumed crystal methamphetamine, five rocks of crack cocaine, about six beers and several pain pills. He said he told his grandfather right after the shooting that he thought he’d shot an alligator. Galjour’s father also testified during the trial that his son was known to walk the streets after drinking. Toxicology tests showed the victim’s bloodalcohol concentration was .140.
Council From 1-A
Councilman Daniel Lorraine asked that parish administration talk to Webre and come back to Saturday, April 2 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Larose Regional Park (985) 693-7355 (985) 360-8112

Council with a supplemental appropriation, effectively rescinding the “moratorium on the devices. “We need to grant him (Webre) his wishes. Not everybody’s happy with them, but 95% are. It works, he said. To the arguments against speed bumps, Webre offered to debunk some so-called myths about them. That there is a “liability issue, or chance the parish could be sued over someone being injured from crossing the devices, Webre said there have been no reported cases of any municipality or any part of government being held liable since the program started in 1992. To the argument that TDC’s inhibit the operation of emergency vehicles, Webre said LPSO is the largest and most frequent “first responder in the parish and that the safe arrival of emergency units is more important than being “reckless in responding to emergencies. “Safe arrival outweighs any perceived hindrance by speed bumps; slowing down takes maybe 10 seconds. In the long run, it saves lives, he stated. Webre also reminded the public there is a process for removal of the devices as well if people don’t like them. “TDC’s are a cost-effective safety measure for residential streets. Please revisit this program, he said.
Disc Disorders & Chiropractic
The disc is a small cartilage pad situated between spinal bones. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer & shock absorber for the spine.
Since spinal discs have a very poor blood supply, they depend upon the circulation of joint fluids to bring in nutrients and expel wastes. If a spinal joint loses its normal motion and this pumping action is impaired, the health of the disc deteriorates. Like a wet sponge, a healthy disc is flexible. A dry sponge is hard, stiff and can crack easily. This is how many disc problems begin.
Discs can deteriorate, bulge, herniate and/or rupture. This can be quite painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, interfering with their function.
The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to help restore proper motion and position to the spinal joint. Besides reducing the bulging or herniating of the disc, better spinal function helps reduce inflammation and allows the healing process to begin.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Two North Carolina teenagers abducted by an uncle have been found in Louisiana, authorities said. ‘Blaze pink’ may soon be a clothing option for La. hunters
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Hunters tired of wearing all that bright orange may soon get another option. Louisiana lawmakers are considering adding “blaze pink as an alternative to the traditional “hunter orange that

hunters are required to wear under state law. Blaze pink is a bright fluorescent pink color. Bogalusa Rep. Malinda White, a hunter who sponsored the bill, says she thinks the addition would encourage more women to hunt. The Democratic lawmaker says Wisconsin has passed a similar provision allowing the fluorescent pink clothing items in addition to the bright orange. The House natural resources committee passed White’s bill without objection Wednesday, sending it to the full House for consideration. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries supports the proposal.

Brown’s Dairy to close its New Orleans milk-processing plant
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Brown’s Dairy is phasing out production at its milkprocessing plant in New Orleans and moving operations to Hammond, the company said Tuesday. Dean Foods, which owns Brown’s Dairy, said in a statement that 185 jobs will be cut when the processing plant relocates. The move is necessary to “enhance manufacturing capabilities in the area, the statement said. Brown’s Dairy was founded in New Orleans in 1904 and was originally known as Brown’s Velvet. Milk processed in New Orleans is distributed throughout Louisiana and in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. In addition to milk and chocolate milk, Brown’s Dairy also produces eggnog, whipping cream, fruit drinks and tea.

The journey of life may not be known with each passing day. But the God of all creation, through his son, has made us a way. That is accepting Jesus Christ, His redemptive son. We can cry in Victory, it is done. No more can the enemy lead us as children who are lost. For Christ made the way at Calvary’s Cross. So call upon the Lord and though the chain of life be broken. With the forgiveness of all sin, Heavens door has been open. Til we meet again, Happy Birthday Son. We all love and miss you. __________

Breaking Bad News
A man goes on a twomonth business trip to Europe and leaves his cat with his brother. Three days before his return he calls his brother. Brother 1: “So, how is my cat doing? Brother 2: “He’s dead. Brother 1: “He’s dead!? What do you mean he’s dead! I loved that cat. Couldn’t you think of a nicer way to tell me! I’m leaving in 3 days. You could have broke the news a little easier. You could have told me today that she got out of the house or something. Then when I called before I
left you could have told me, ‘Well, we found her but she is up on the roof and we’re having trouble getting her down.’ Then when I call you from the airport you could have told me, the fire department was there and scared her off the roof and the cat died when it hit the ground. Brother 2: “I’m sorry, you’re right, that was insensitive. I won’t let it happen again. Brother 1: “Alright, alright, forget about it. Anyway, how is Mom doing? Brother 2: “She’s up on the roof and we’re having trouble getting her down.

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Atheist’s research leads him to believe in Jesus’ Resurrection
The following-abbreviated article, “How Easter Killed My Faith in Atheism” by columnist Lee Strobel is quoted with permission from Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly. It was the worst news I could get as an atheist: my agnostic wife had decided to become a Christian. This was not part of the deal when we got married! I thought she was going to turn into some sort of self-righteous holy roller – and I didn’t want anything to do with it. But over the following months, I was surprised – and intrigued – by the positive changes in her character and values. Finally, I decided to take my journalism and legal training (I was legal editor of the Chicago Tribune) and systematically investigate whether there was any credibility to Christianity. I quickly determined
that the resurrection of Jesus was the key. Why? Because in a variety of ways, Jesus made divine claims about himself. He told a crowd in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” He was saying that he and the Father are of the same nature or essence. The audience understood what he was asserting – they picked up stones to kill him for blasphemy because, “You, a mere man, are claiming to be God” (v. 33). True, anyone can claim to be divine. But if Jesus backed up his claim by dying and then rising from the dead, then that’s pretty good evidence he was telling the truth. The apostle Paul recognized this centrality of the resurrection. “If Christ has not been raised,” he said in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “your faith is futile; you’re still in your sins.” So over a nearly twoyear period, I explored the historical data on whether Easter was myth or reality. I didn’t merely accept the New Testament at face value; I was determined only to consider facts that were well-supported historically. As my investigation unfolded, my atheism began to buckle.
Was Jesus really executed? We have evidence so strong that even atheist historian Gerd Lüdemann said Jesus’ death by crucifixion is “indisputable.” Is the resurrection a legend? Not a chance. Experts tell us it took more than two generations of time in the ancient world for legend to develop and wipe out a solid core of historical truth. Yet we have a report of the resurrection – that Jesus appeared to named eyewitnesses, including a skeptic and an opponent whose lives were changed 180 degrees – which scholars have dated
to within months of Jesus’ death. Was Jesus’ tomb empty? Scholar William Lane Craig points out that its location was known to Christians and non-Christians alike. He said if it hadn’t been empty, it would have been impossible for a movement founded on the resurrection to have exploded into existence in the same city where Jesus had been publicly executed just a few weeks before. Besides, even Jesus’ opponents implicitly admitted the tomb was vacant by saying that his
body had been stolen. But nobody had a motive for taking the body, especially the disciples. They wouldn’t have been willing to die brutal martyrs deaths if they knew this was all a lie. Did anyone see Jesus alive again? We have at least eight ancient sources, both inside and outside the New Testament, that confirm the apostles’ conviction that they encountered the resurrected Christ. Jesus appeared to groups of people on three different occasions – including 500 at once! Was this some other
sort of vision? This wouldn’t explain the dramatic conversion of Saul, who was an opponent of Christians, or James, the once-skeptical half-brother of Jesus. Each saw the risen Jesus and later died proclaiming he had appeared to him. In the end, after I had thoroughly investigated the matter, I reached an unexpected conclusion: it would actually take more faith to maintain my atheism than to become a follower of Jesus. That’s why I’m now celebrating my 32nd Easter as a Christian.
