Larose resident and long-time Larose Civic Center volunteer Ted Savoie, will serve as this year’s Grand Marshall of the French Food Festival. Savoie, the son of Sidney and Mathilde Savoie, was raised in Galliano, is a graduate of Larose-Cut Off High School and attended Delgado Trade School. Ted was not a stranger to the boat business because his father began his training as a rider when Ted was six years old. As he got older, his mentors became the captains of other boats. Deckhand, mate, and captain were all jobs Ted Savoie had until 1967 when he was taken into the office operations with United Tugs, Inc., working as personnel manager, port captain and runner. In 1980, Ted Savoie, Larbow Cheramie, and John Trosclair formed Central Gulf Towing, LLC, and operate a fleet of tugboats. Ted Savoie has always been a part of community organizations and held membership in the South Lafourche Jaycees, South Lafourche Chamber of Commerce, (serving as its first president), Holy Rosary School Board, Holy Rosary Church Council, HoumaThibodaux Diocesan School See Savoie Page 3-A

Final design work on the first segment of elevated highway to eventually connect with the Louisiana Highway 1 (LA 1) overpass in Leeville is on schedule and expected to be complete in late spring of next year according to Henri Boulet, director of the LA1 Coalition. Once the design work is completed and approved, Boulet estimates that a construction commencement date from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will be approximately August or September of 2015. The segment, which will cover some 3,400 feet in length, just over a half mile, will run from just south of the Apache dock in Golden Meadow to some 200 feet south of the ring levee below Golden Meadow. The segment will slowly rise to an elevation of 26 feet above sea level when it reaches the ring levee in order to allow space for the levee to be raised in the future if needed. “The Corps of Engineers signed off on the project but we’re having to go to this height in order to allow room for future levee upgrades. We’re glad that it was able to be worked out that these two important projects can coexist,” said Boulet. Work on the elevated road between Golden Meadow and Leeville will use end on construction, meaning the road will be built in segments. Once the half mile, $46 million segment from Golden Meadow south to the levee is completed, the larger six mile segment approaching Leeville will be next up. See Roadway Page 5-A

Felony environmental charges added for Lafourche Parish man accused of theft and criminal damage to property

Investigators within the Criminal Investigation Division of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality booked a Lafourche Parish man on September 11 for the illegal discharge of diesel fuel into state waterways. Garrett Gilliam, 41, of Cut Off, was originally arrested by Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s deputies on August 26, 2014, for stealing diesel from the 1 of 12 pump station located off of Highway 652 in Raceland sometime between the night of August 23, and the morning of August 24. After his arrest, Gilliam admitted to deputies that he stole diesel and intentionally discharged some of it near the pump station to make his stolen load light enough to transport. Gilliam was originally booked on three counts of felony theft and one count of felony criminal damage to property. Following the arrest, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s deputies’ contacted criminal investigators with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality about the incident. As the result of their ongoing investigation, DEQ investigators booked Gilliam with an additional felony charge of knowingly discharging a pollutant to state waterways.

“This is another example of local law enforcement working with DEQ to combat environmental crimes and protect the state’s natural resources,” said Jeff Nolan, Manager of DEQ’s Criminal Investigation Division. “We continue to encourage local law enforcement to contact our Criminal Investigation Division whenever they discover these types of crimes.” If convicted of the crime of knowingly discharging pollutants to waters of the state, Gilliam faces possible imprisonment for not more than three years with or without hard labor, or a fine of not more than $50,000, or both. The mission of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is to protect the environment and public health. Any persons with knowledge of any spills, releases, odors, fish kills, open burning, waste tires and any other types of environmental incidents may contact the department at 225-219-3640 or Toll Free 1-888-763-5424. An arrest does not constitute guilt in a criminal case. All evidence compiled during the investigation is presented to area prosecutors who determine if formal charges are warranted.

TRADITIONS

There are no expiration dates on traditions ‌ some end abruptly, some are erased by time and technology: street sweepers went out with the horse and buggy, gas street lights, (Thomas Edison took care of that), bingo (out by church decree), stoning, witch burning and stockades. Some traditions should have never happened and are best forgotten. Every ethnic group still has theirs ‌ Irish have St. Patrick’s Day and green beer, Italians have St Joseph altars, Germans have October Fest., Mexicans have pinatas (does that count?), and blessing of the fishing fleet for the

Cajuns. Today, two traditions I witnessed, a charivari and boucheries. What is a charivari? Webster’s 1913 Dictionary defined it as “a serenade of noise done with kettles and tin horns meant to annoy, generally when an older person married a young person or widows and widowers who remarried. Practiced in France and brought to Louisiana by the Acadians, the revelers, mostly friends of the newlyweds would gather and serenade them until they “accepted the charivari and welcomed them in, and for an hour or so, they ate and drank while the bride and groom retired.

Annie and Roy, the newlyweds

Lou Lou, the exterminator

To a Cajun, a party is a party is a party. The one I saw was when my bachelor uncle Roy Callais married the widow Annie. About a dozen of their friends gathered, made the expected noise, and after about one half hour, the newlyweds “acceptedâ€? and invited them in. Everybody had a drink or two and it soon ended. I watched from their porch and it was less exciting than expected, but the wedding vows were strong. Annie was a beautician and Roy later became the Registrar of Voters of Lafourche Parish for 20 years. The last years of her life, Roy slept by her bed, told her stories, and read to her, even long after she was no longer capable of hearing or seeing him. Roy passed away a few years after her. A boucherie was a family affair with aunts, uncles and cousins helping with the cleaning, cooking and preparing of the boudin, hogshead cheese, blood (or anemic) stew, crackling and everything eatable, which was EVERTHING ‌ ears, snout, brains, feet, liver, kidneys and stomach (perhaps the squeamish should stop reading now). First, you needed a hog and have someone kill it. In my family, the executor was a kind and gentle person, (think of Hoss Cartwright), Uncle Rosulus “Lou Louâ€? Callais. Why? Because he owned a handgun, everyone else had shotguns, and that would have been, should I say, not as “neatâ€?.

Married to Jane Callahan Savoie for 51 years, Ted and Jane are the proud parents of 4 children: Sonya Savoie Bussola, Simonne Savoie Golden, Sidney Savoie, and Stephanie Savoie Hopkins. Ted Savoie, a long-time volunteer at Larose Regional Park & Civic Center, stated, “I remember attending the very first Bouillabaisse Festival on the grounds at LCO High School and have attended many festivals since then. “I have served as construction worker, booth worker, event volunteer, board member, booth sponsor, and have worked in the fair’s bank for many years. “Although we have a beautiful building, large

Sarah, the Head Guru

Then everybody did what they did best. The men rendered the lard and made “gratonsâ€? in cast iron kettles over a wood fire. The ladies took the entrails to wash in Bayou Lafourche for boudin casings, while others prepared the “grilliadsâ€? (pork cutlets) in fivegallon clay jars and covered them with lard for preservation. Then, as the “coup de graceâ€?, the bladder was dried, filled with air and tossed to the children to play catch for the rest of the day. That left the head, which in my family was given to Aunt Sarah to make hogshead cheese. She would boil and cook it, (hated the smell but loved the results), let it jell, cut it pizza style and after school I would peddle it door to door at 5 or 10 cents a slice. When I mentioned it was made by Aunt Sarah they would often buy another piece, since hers was said to be the best. At the end of the day, every family member would get a portion of the finished produce. The sun was setting, God was on his throne and all was right with the world. Just around the corner, however, lying in wait was four long years of war, separations, rationing, loss of loved ones and thankfully, a bright new world order ‌ for a few years, anyway. It has often been said that every part of the hog was used except the squeal. True that! Too bad we could not have bottled it. Bye now.

grounds, recreational areas, and provide many services to the community, the most amazing accomplishment of the Bayou Civic Club is how it has brought the community together for several decades. “My thanks go out to the people that had the foresight and dreams to make this organization and this facility possible. My other thanks are for the many hundreds of volunteers, both past and present, that have given countless hours to make the Bayou Civic Club and the French Food Festival the success that it is today. “It is my privilege and honor to serve as Grand Marshal XXXVII on behalf of the Bayou Civic Club, the many volunteers and to follow in the footsteps of past Grand Marshals.

Apple iPhone 6 pre-order demand overwhelms supply

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple says it had more than 4 million pre-orders of its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 24 hours, exceeding its initial pre-order supply. The company says the

phones will be delivered to customers starting Friday and throughout September, but many won’t be delivered until October. Phones will be available on a walk-in basis beginning Friday at Apple retail stores. Both phones will also be available beginning Friday from AT&T, Sprint, T -Mobile, Verizon Wireless and other carriers and other authorized Apple resellers. The new phones were announced last week and have larger screens, faster performance, and come equipped with Apple Pay, a contactless payment serv-

Shrimpers back on the job without higher prices

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana shrimpers are back on the water, and most of them returned after three days of what had been planned as a one-week strike for higher prices. After a meeting last Friday, Louisiana Shrimp Association members said they’d keep their boats docked for a week because prices are so low. But WVUE-TV reports that many were trawling again by Tuesday. Warren Delacroix says organizers understand that some people have to make a living. He says that some people stuck it out for the whole time. Fisherman say processors are paying about $1.80 per pound for small shrimp. Association officials say the price was nearly $3 at the start of the season. ___

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (AP) — Thomas Hale Boggs Jr., a son of congressional royalty who evolved into a top-tier lobbyist and prolific Democratic fundraiser and embodied what it meant to have Washington clout, died Monday at his home outside Washington, D.C. He was 73. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., opened Monday’s session by paying him tribute, calling him “an institution in this city. Earlier Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, DCalif., called the home of Boggs’ sister, the journalist Cokie Roberts, to express her sympathies, according to journalist Steve Roberts, Coke Roberts’ husband. His brother-in-law, journalist Steve Roberts, said Boggs died Monday morning at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The cause of death has not been determined, but the family suspected a heart attack. Boggs was the son of the late House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, a Louisiana Democrat, and Lindy Boggs, who suc-

ceeded her husband in Congress after he died in a 1972 plane crash during a campaign trip to Alaska. At Patton Boggs — as the law firm was known until recently — Boggs was responsible for helping shepherd the $1.5 billion federal bailout of Chrysler through Congress in 1979. Boggs ran for Congress once, losing to Republican Gilbert Gude in 1970 in Maryland. ___

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Concerns about water quality and flooding at a Terrebonne water treatment plant have halted a project to install a pump station that aims to improve drainage in Thibodaux. Terrebonne Waterworks Manager Mike Sobert tells The Daily Comet if the roughly $4.8 million project is continued as is, the nearby Schriever drinking water plant will flood and water quality in both Terrebonne and Lafourche could suffer. Sobert lodged a complaint with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. Until his complaints are addressed, Sobert said engineering and construction permits will not be issued. The Lafourche Parish Administration sent its plans for the Dugas Canal pump station to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers to address Sobert’s concerns before the project moves forward.

Tarpons downgrade Hurricanes to a drizzle, score first win of 2014 Casey Gisclair Contributing Writer

South Lafourche’s young football team is learning on the fly, gradually picking up steam as they cruise through the beginning portions of the season. Never was that more evident than in Friday night’s win against South Plaquemines. In the opening drive of the game, the Hurricanes took the Tarpons by storm, turning a third and long play into a 55-yard screen pass for a touchdown and an 8-0 lead. But when South Plaquemines tried the play again later in the game, it was stuffed – a sign of South Lafourche’s continued slow and steady growth. With that growth, the Tarpons’ offense and special teams made plenty enough big plays to control the game and secure a 49-8 win. “We’re still learning,” Skains said after the win. “We got better tonight. We got better this week in prac-

tice. I think we have so many guys out there who just don’t have much varsity experience, so we have some growing pains. The speed is different. The size of the players are different. It’s unfortunate that in our sport, sometimes the best way to learn something is by messing up and making a mistake. But we had a tough first game and we made some mistakes tonight, as well. But we’re showing that we’re learning and progressing – that’s the most important thing.” For South Plaquemines, it was special teams that derailed the team’s hopes at competing on Friday night in Galliano. After allowing the touchdown drive on the opening possession of the game, South Lafourche fired back just three plays later when junior quarterback Harvey Allen scampered 61 yards down the field and into the end zone. After a successful 2-point conversion, the game was tied at 8 with still 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.

Then the special teams gaffes started to take place. After forcing the Hurricanes to punt deep inside their own territory, South Lafourche defender Dylan Grabert blocked South Plaquemines punter Kendrick Smith’s effort, scooping up the ball and taking it into the end zone for a touchdown. After kicker Brannon Lee’s successful extra point, the Tarpons went ahead 15-8. Two drives later, South Lafourche forced another stop and blocked another South Plaquemines punt – this time the ball rolling out of the back of the end zone for a safety to put South Lafourche ahead 17-8. With the possession off the safety, Allen hit junior receiver Shak Dillon on a 33-yard touchdown bomb. After Lee’s extra point, the Tarpons led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. With a big lead in hand, the Tarpons relied on more special teams magic to put the game away. The Tarpons blocked another punt midway through the second quarter, this time with Henri Terrebonne scooping it up and running in for a touchdown. Two drives later, the team got its fourth block, which sailed out the end zone for a safety and a 32-8 lead. “That’s something we really put a strong emphasis on – special teams,” Skains said. “We did a great job there tonight. We really want to be strong in that area. We’re working hard with that unit – harder than we have in years past.” South Lafourche went ahead 39-8 at halftime when senior Justin Doucet scored on a short run. Out of the lockers, South Lafourche iced the game for good when Allen hit receiver Tony Bailey on a deep touchdown pass to make the score 46-8. The final score came late in the game when kicker Kevin Hernandez drilled a 32-yard field goal. With the win, South Lafourche improves to 1-1 on the season. They will take on Shaw at home on Friday night. “We know Shaw has a good football team,” Skains said. “We will get back to

work, focus on having a good week of practice and just continuing to get better from there.” ___

CL overcomes sluggish start, rolls to win

Not many high school teams have their homecoming on the second night of the prep football season. But Central Lafourche did just that this weekend against J.S. Clark, and it worked. The team rolled to 2-0 on the season. The Trojans pounded their New Orleans-based foe on Friday night, roaring to a 37-7 victory. Elite halfbacks Da’Quan Gray and Thomas Wesley did most of the legwork in the victory, combining for four of the Trojans’ touchdowns in what Gray described as a total team win. “It feels good to be 2-0,” he said. “We did it as a team tonight. My line was great. Our defense was great. It was a good win.” For the Trojans, the first half of Friday night’s game wasn’t pretty. Central Lafourche took a 3-0 lead when kicker Brader Dufrene nailed a field goal from 40 yards out. After that kick, the teams traded touchdowns to close the first half. The first came from Wesley, who pushed back the defense and into the end zone to go ahead 10-0. The second came from Clark defensive back Johnny Myers, who stepped in front of Trojans’ quarterback Austin Aucoin’s pass and took it into the end zone to make the score 10-7 at halftime. But out of the lockers, Gray and Wesley took over and pummeled Clark’s defense into submission. That duo, combined with sophomore back Nelton Allen combined for four touchdowns in the final half to turn a three-point halftime lead into a blowout. The Trojans will be home again this coming Friday for a third-straight week in a home tilt with Mandeville – easily the team’s stiffest challenge this season. Congratulations also go out to Ms. Courtney LeBlanc, who was named Homecoming Queen during halftime festivities.

Santiny is football contest winner The first week’s winner of the Lafourche Gazette’s Football Contest is Jonathon Santiny, of 100 Chighizola Lane, Grand Isle. There were 2 entries with 4 wrong, but

Jonathon’s was the closest to the tie breaker. Winners can pick up their $65 check at the Gazette’s office on Hwy. 308 in Larose anytime Monday through Friday between 8 and 4.

Stubbs resigns as Nicholls football coach THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Charlie Stubbs is resigning as head football coach at Nicholls State University, citing “major health reasons” that a university spokesman isn’t elaborating on. A longtime assistant at a number of colleges, Nicholls State was the first collegiate head coaching job for the 59-year-old Stubbs. He took over in 2010, finishing with a 10-38 record in his fourplus seasons. The Colonels lost to Division II Henderson State Saturday, 27-10, falling to 0-3 this year. “For more than four years I have given my best effort to create the climate of change needed to support a winning football program here at Nicholls,” Stubbs said in a statement. “During the past year I have been diagnosed with major health issues, and I know that now is the time to step aside and focus my efforts on my health.” Nicholls State President Bruce Murphy accepted Stubbs’ resignation Sunday. Spokesman Jamie Bustos said he doesn’t know anything more about Stubbs health problems, or what would cause him to resign in midseason. He said the school had planned to announce it Monday, but news leaked out Sunday. Nicholls Athletics Director Rob Bernardi praised Stubbs for improving the

academic success of Nicholls State football players. Under Stubbs, the Nicholls State football program produced a Southland Conference Student Athlete of the Year and the program’s first-ever Capital One Academic First Team All-America honoree. “In many ways, he has advanced our program in terms of the academic success of our students and the overall accountability,” Bernardi said. For that, we are very grateful. We wish him and his family the best.” Bernardi said associate head coach Chuck Hepola will oversee day-to-day football operations until a replacement is hired. Bustos said he’s not sure if Hepola will run the team for the rest of the season or not.

LSU’s Death Valley: Roaring Tiger, shaking stadium

Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge — aka Death Valley ‌ LSU coach Les Miles once called it after a big victory the place where opponents’ “dreams go to die.â€? The place holds more than 102,000 fans. On Saturday nights in the fall — night games are when Tiger Stadium is most rowdy and raucous — there is no louder football stadium in America. Back in the 1980s, a late game-winning touchdown by LSU set off a celebration so deafening that it registered as an earthquake at the Louisiana Geological Survey not far from the Stadium. And that was back when capacity was only about 79,000. Ahead of the 2014 college football season, the AP asked its panel of Top 25 voters, who are known for ranking the nation’s top teams each week, to weigh in on which stadium had the best game-day atmosphere. Notre Dame Stadium, with its Touchdown Jesus, looming over one end zone, and Texas A&M’s Kyle Field also received recognition from the panel. So did Ohio State’s Horseshoe and Auburn’s Jordan-Hare. But the home of a live Tiger named Mike, who sits in his cage on the field before games, right in front of the tunnel to the visitor’s locker room so opposing players must move past him to warmup, was the runaway No. 1 in these rankings.

The Board of Commissioners of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission met in regular session on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Administration Building 16829 East Main Street, Galliano, LA. President Gisclair called the meeting to order and Secretary Cheramie called roll. ATTENDED: Chuckie Cheramie, Perry Gisclair, Kris Gaudet, Donald Vizier, Larry Griffin, John Melancon Jr., Jimmy Guidry, and Ervin Bruce ABSENT: Wilbert Collins Upon motion by Melancon and second by Griffin, the board unanimously approved the minutes for July 9, 2014 regular meeting. Executive Director’s Report Northern Expansion Projects – Engineer John Plaisance reported that the contractor is making some progress driving the timber sheet piles for the deadman on the west side. The contractor is expected to be completed with driving timber sheets within the next few weeks then will proceed to pour the concrete deadman. The plans and specs for the sweep dredging of this bulkhead will be forwarded this week for DOTD’s review. Airport Projects – Joe Wheeler reported that the final inspection for the Glide Slope project will be scheduled within the next two weeks. Vision Communications is on site installing the telecommunications cables now. The Taxiway Centerline Lighting project is on hold. The Apron Expansion project preconstruction meeting with Byron E. Talbot Contractors will be scheduled within the next two weeks. Mr. Breaux reported that the bids were opened on July 22nd for the Pump Station – Pipe Replacement project with the low bid from Low Land Construction of $296,533 (Base Bid $246,933 and Alternate No. 1 of $49,700). He does recommend approval which is later on the agenda. Wheeler reported that the aircraft operations for July were 1932. Port Security and Grant Projects – April Danos reported that there is a change order on the agenda for the TWIC Implementation project for 25 additional days ending August 30, 2014. The CCTV Additional Cameras project is ongoing and we expect completion by August 30th. Other Port Projects – William Evans with URS reported on the Assumption of Maintenance Study stating that they are currently addressing the comments from the draft report submitted last month. He will continue to follow-up with Mr. Autin for the permit approval. Engineer John Plaisance reported on the Storm Harbor Marina stating that the contractor is currently excavating the material in the slips. They plan to complete excavation by the end of August with final completion of project in September. There will be some weather days accessed for this project. Engineer Larry Picciola reported that we are waiting on the State Bond Commission’s cash approval to bid out the N. J. Theriot Road Elevation & Improvements project. Executive Director Chett Chiasson stated that we expect it on their August agenda to approve the $1.4 million. He stated we already have approval from EDA for $1.4 million. We are just waiting on the state to go out for bid. Engineer John Plaisance reported that the Nerby Collins Commercial Marina Bulkhead project is to replace the old bulkhead on the backside of the marina with a PVC upgrade. As he continues on the project design, the grant

consultant is working on the Environmental Review Record. He plans to start advertising in October or November. Engineer Joe Picciola reported on the progress with the Leeville Public Boat Launch. He stated that the concrete ramps were poured and the contractor is now constructing the wharves. Once the wharves are complete, they will flood the area and remove the cofferdam. Update on LA 1 Projects – Henri Boulet reported that the notice to proceed with final design of Segment C in Golden Meadow and the newly identified contingency project Segment E for the Phase II tie-in at the 90% degree curve in Leeville was issued by DOTD last Thursday. 95% Final Plans should be complete in May 2015. From there, it typically takes about 2 months to gain authorization from the FHWA to bid out. DOTD estimates a construction letting date for Segment C in August/September 2015. Should the bid results come in significantly less than the $46 million funding currently allotted for, DOTD would bid out Segment E as a contingency project which will include the widening of the bridge at the 90% curve in Leeville. This is being done to facilitate the tie-in of Phase II’s three lanes as it approaches that intersection from the north, and in the meantime, will provide the traveling public’s industrial trucks a wider curve at that point. That widening would extend about 400 feet from the curve going southward. The state will be conducting a “value engineering” study later this month for the final design of Segment C in Golden Meadow. Value engineering studies are done on projects which cost in excess of $25 million and are done to achieve design excellence. Its objectives are to improve quality, minimize total ownership costs, reduce construction time, make the project easier to construct, insure safe operations, and assure environmental and ecological goals are met. The Coalition has been building support for the project through several large audiences, including exhibiting at the Deepwater Technical Conference, presenting to the American Association of Drilling Engineers and the Gulf Coast Regulatory & Environmental Action Group, and serving as a panelist at a U.S.D.O.E. public hearing for the administration’s Quadrennial Energy Review. As well, we hosted a federal stakeholder event in Washington DC earlier in the summer. Finally, the Coalition recently met with the Chairman of the Governor’s Office on Coastal Affairs Jerome Zeringue and the Executive Director of the CPRA, Kyle Graham to reaffirm the LA 1 Project’s need to receive any qualifying infrastructure funds which may come to the state as a result of the Restore Act. Chiasson requested that the board add to the agenda to discuss the South Lafourche Levee District (SLLD) Lock Operations. Upon motion by Melancon and second by Bruce, with no public comment, the board unanimously approved adding the SLLD to the agenda for discussion. Chiasson stated that the SLLD Lock Operations agreement with the Port Commission was for a 5 year period of $200,000 per year for the SLLD employee payrolls for operating the locks. The final payment of this agreement was sent June 2014. Ronald Callais with the SLLD thanked the board for the cooperation over the last five years. He stated that since the SLLD has limited funds and most funds are going toward levee building the board is thankful for this funding. Callais stated that these funds used were strictly for the lock employee’s salaries. He requested that the board consider renewing this agreement for another 5 years with the same stipulations. Chiasson stated that we will work on a new agreement and have it ready for the board’s consideration at our next meeting in September. Chiasson thanked everyone for being here in the audience and recognized Matt and Jeff from Congressman Scalise’s office and stated that they will be taking a tour of Fourchon after the meeting. hardly assure similar results when Mississippi State (3-0) visits Tiger Stadium. The Bulldogs have scored at least 35 points in their three season-opening victories. Prescott, a northwest Louisiana native who played for Haughton High School, has completed 60 percent of his passes for nearly 700 yards and nine touchdowns against two interceptions. LSU had an opportunity to see the dual-threat skills of Prescott in last season’s game in Starkville. Prescott accounted for more than 200 yards while dividing time with Tyler Russell. Prescott rushed for 103 yards, including a 28yard scoring run. He completed nine of 20 passes for 106 yards. “Prescott is really an explosive player,” said defensive tackle Christian LaCouture, who saw action against Prescott as a backup last year. “You have to stop the run first and convert on the pass later. You see a lot of guys who are a great runner and not a good thrower or guys who are the complete opposite. “Prescott can both run and throw,” LaCouture said. “As defensive linemen, we have to attack the line of scrimmage. Chairman Melancon presented for the board’s approval the insurance renewal proposal for policy period beginning September 25th. James Rome presented the highlights to the board of the 8 lines of insurance renewals received from Jim Lawler with AON. The 1st line Port Liability including Hull, P&I, and MEL from the TT Club no changes. The 2nd line of Airport Operator has no change. The 3rd line of Automobile Liability with Travelers has an increase of 14% with no direct reason for increase except that we cover high speed pursuit police vehicles. The 4th line Workers Compensation with LWCC has an increase of 9.7% which is due to an increase in payroll. The 5th line Vessel Pollution with Great American has no change. The 6th and 7th line Public Officials/EPL Darwin and Police Professional Darwin with Allied World Surplus Lines both have a 10% increase which is due to the increase in employees from 36 to 40. The 8th line Bumbershoot with Star Indemnity has no change. The AON fee has no change and we are in the 5th and final year. The total premium is $392,739.65 which represents a 6.2% increase which we recommend approval. Gaudet questioned the automobile liability that the increase is due to additional vehicles purchased, which Rome replied we did retire some vehicles and purchased some. We are now at 53 units and with the newly purchased vehicles the collision may be part of that factor. Upon motion by Melancon which was second by Griffin, with no public comment, the board unanimously approved the insurance renewal proposal prepared by AON for

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The early season performances of Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott have gotten the attention of LSU coach Les Miles. “Dak Prescott is as good a player as there is at his position in our conference,” Miles said Monday, as preparations began for the No. 8 Tigers’ Southeastern Conference opener against the Bulldogs on Saturday night. “He’s a guy that stands back in the pocket and knows what he’s looking at. He makes the throws and he has the ability to pull it down. He runs with strength. “I don’t know exactly how fast Prescott is, but he carves through the ground very quickly,” Miles added. “When you go to tackle him, you better hit him hard. You better take him off his feet because he’s just a big, physical kid.” The Tigers (3-0) have yielded just 94 passing yards per game in their victories against Wisconsin, Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe. Quarterbacks from those three teams have combined to complete a mere 40 percent of passing attempts with no touchdowns and four interceptions. Yet they know their previous performances

LSU has not lost in Tiger Stadium to Mississippi State since 1991 — the year before the SEC split into divisions. However, Miles knows this is not the same caliber of Bulldogs team of recent seasons. METAIRIE, La. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram has a broken hand. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Monday because the Saints have not disclosed the injury, which was first reported by ESPN. The person says the timeline for Ingram’s return remains unclear. Saints coach Sean Payton, who was asked about the injury on Monday, says he’s following his policy of not releasing injury information until the next NFLrequired injury report, which for New Orleans this week is Wednesday afternoon. Ingram gained 104 yards from scrimmage during the Saints’ 26-24 loss at Cleveland on Sunday, rushing 11 times for 83 yards with one touchdown and catching three passes for 21 yards. He scored two TDs in Week 1. AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

Jack and Bob went skiing. After a few hours of driving north, they got caught up in a terrible blizzard and pulled into the driveway of a farm owned by a very rich widow. They went to the door and asked the attractive lady who answered if they could spend the night there. “Oh, it’s such a terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself. But I am recently widowed,” she said, “and I’m afraid of what the neighbor will say if I let two attractive young men stay in my house.” “Don’t worry,” Jack said, “We’ll be happy if you just let us sleep in your barn if the weather breaks, we’ll be gone at first light.” The lady agreed and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night. Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they left and had a great skiing weekend. Nine months later, Jack got a letter from an attorney. It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined it was the attorney of the attractive widow whose barn they stayed at with Bob. He drove to see his friend and asked him, “Bob, remember nine months ago when we went skiing and stopped over at that beautiful widow’s barn to wait out the bad weather?” “Yes, I do,” said Bob. “Did you get up in the middle of the night, pay her a visit at the house and stay overnight?” Bob, getting a little embarrassed, confirmed that’s what happened. “And did you happen to use my name while you were with her?” “I am sorry buddy, I am afraid I did,” replied Bob whose face turned red by now. “Why do you ask?” “She just died and left me everything,” exclaimed Jack.

When sinkholes open, they can swallow fortunes Bruse Schreiner Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Solid ground isn’t always a certainty. Sinkholes can lurk anywhere, beneath suburban homes, city streets or even football stadiums and museums. It’s basic geology: Sinkholes open when soil collapses into large holes, caused by flowing water in underground limestone. Their toll can be dramatic, swallowing homes, trees or anything else on the collapsing ground — even prized Corvettes. The Southeastern U.S. is prime territory for the geological phenomena — a potentially costly game of subterranean roulette. In Tennessee, a sinkhole opened during renovations on the football stadium at Austin Peay State University. What started as a small hole turned into a chasm 40 feet deep and 40 feet wide as a repair crew dug to find its source. In Kentucky, a sinkhole gobbled eight classic cars on display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. Corvettes, piled like toys in a heap of dirt and concrete fragments, became an Internet sensation, boosting museum attendance. And in Florida — ground zero for sinkholes — Tina and John Furlow were forced from their home near Tampa when a sinkhole caused so much damage that the repairs would have exceeded the value of the three-bedroom house with a nice pool. They now live in a used recreational vehicle. “It has been miserable,” Tina Furlow said. “It is taking its toll on us. We decided we need to get off this merry-go-round.” For every sinkhole that causes property damage, scores open in fields and other obscure places. “In the Southeast U.S., there are hundreds of sinkholes every day and they don’t get reported ... or they don’t cause damage,” said Jason Polk, professor of geology and geography at Western Kentucky University. Earlier this year, sinkholes opened at high-profile spots about an hour and a half apart: the Corvette Museum in south-central Kentucky and the football stadium at Austin Peay State in Clarksville, Tennessee. During renovations at Austin Peay’s Governors Stadium, a sinkhole was discovered where the foot-

ball field meets the track. Workers needed seven days to fix it, said Mike Jenkins, superintendent for Nashville-based Bell & Associates Construction. The hole was plugged with layers of boulders, concrete, smaller rocks and a layer of cloth-like material to prevent moisture from seeping through. Then came another application of rocks, capped by asphalt. “I’m pretty confident that the work we did won’t become an issue again,” Jenkins said. Austin Peay plays its first football game in the renovated stadium Saturday against Chattanooga. At the Corvette Museum, the 60-foot-long, 45foot-wide, 30-foot-deep sinkhole opened in the Skydome display area in midFebruary. The place that showcases automotive engineering will highlight another engineering feat when workers fix the hole. The project is expected to last six months and cost millions of dollars, said museum spokeswoman Katie Frassinelli. The museum will remain open during repairs. Workers will stabilize the sinkhole walls with metal sheets, then fill it with about 4,000 tons of crushed limestone. Grout — a mixture of sand and cement — will be poured into dozens of holes drilled into the rock, supporting steel and concrete pillars beneath the floor. Concrete flooring will complete the project. Elsewhere, in one extreme case, a 37-acre sinkhole opened two years ago in southern Louisiana and has been swallowing land ever since. Scientists be-

lieve it formed after an underground salt dome cavern had some sort of collapse or breach of its outer supporting sidewall of salt. In Florida, the nation’s most sinkhole-prone state, a sinkhole in 1981 swallowed sports cars, parts of two businesses, the deep end of a swimming pool and a three-bedroom Winter Park home. In 2013, a Florida man died when a sinkhole opened under his bedroom. Homeowners often find clues to a sinkhole problem through cracks in the foundation or a shifting floor. When a sinkhole threat has been established, crews can pump a thick grout into the ground to fill the holes. “There are no typical cases with a sinkhole,” said Sandy Nettles, who owns a geology consulting company in the Tampa, Florida, area. “It just depends on where the building is. We get a lot of them that opened underneath a house. You can run around the house and see no evidence of the sinkhole, but the interior of the house is subsiding or collapsing.” The Furlows had no clue a sinkhole had formed on their property until John Furlow fell into the hole beside the house, said his wife, Tina. They tried sticking it out but finally left when her husband developed a lung infection from mold in the house, she said. “We put every penny into that house thinking we would live and die there,” she said.
