Range to close for September for levee construction
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — When the doors closed on the candidate sign-up period for the fall elections, Secretary of State Tom Schedler said it seemed “crazier” than usual. A few days later, when he received the data, he understood why the three-day qualifying felt so slammed. Louisiana has more offices up for election and more candidates on the November ballot than for any election over the last 23 years, according to a tally provided by Schedler’s office. To make it even more complicated, the secretary of state is seeing significantly more objections filed to candidacies winding See Election Page 5-A

Gheens man charged with violating new law named in honor of local shooting victim
A Gheens man arrested for domestic battery on Friday, September 5th, is the first person in the parish to be charged per a new law named for a local shooting victim. Michael Head, 46, of 310 Gracie Lane, was charged with violating Louisiana Revised Statute 14:95.10, which prohibits someone previously convicted of domestic abuse battery from possessing a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon for 10 years. The statute was created by House Bill 753, also known as the Susan “Pixie” Gouaux Act, which was signed into law earlier this year by Governor Bobby Jindal as part of a package of multiple bills aimed at preventing domestic violence. Just after 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at Head’s residence on Gracie Lane. Through inves-
tigation at the scene, deputies learned Michael Head had been arguing with his wife when the altercation turned physical. At one point, Head allegedly pulled his wife’s hair and slammed her to the ground, but he eventually fled the residence. While they were at the scene, deputies discovered a Michael Head rifle on the floor of the living room. Deputies were unable to locate Head at that time and obtained a warrant for his arrest. On Friday, September 5, deputies made contact with Head at his residence, and he was taken into custody without incident. See New Law Page 5-A
The South Lafourche Levee District and Eymard’s Shooting Academy have reached an agreement that will allow construction to continue on ongoing levee projects. Levee District General Manager Windell Curole said an agreement has been reached with range owner Hugh Eymard to close the range for a month to allow contractors safe access to work on the section directly in line with the shooting range. The agreement must be approved by the levee district’s board. The range is located just off La. 3235 in Galliano. The levee sits several hundred yards behind the range’s targets. The levee district is working to raise the levees along the western flank of the system to between 13 and 16 feet. Curole said his employees have expressed concerns traveling down range from the shooters. He emphasized he isn’t against shooting ranges but wants to avoid putting his workers in the line of fire. With approximately 200 people participating, the Pushing Paddles for a Cure event held Sunday was an overwhelming success, raising well over their goal of $10,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The event was established in 2012 in the name of Dillion Shicksnider who, at the young age of 16, lost his battle to the disease. All funds collected were donated to MDA to be distributed to research and development in hopes of one day finding a cure.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday, Sept. 5, at the Gators on the Bayou Sports Bar, located at 12436 Hwy. 1 in Larose. Gators on the Bayou serves up delicious food such as wings and burgers and also offers a full bar, eleven flat screen TVs and a 102-inch hi-def projection screen so sports lovers can watch football games, pay per view sporting events and more! Pictured is manager Michelle Chouest (center) cutting the ribbon. Behind her is owner Ben Peterson along with Gators’ employees and Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office representatives.

“In a Small Pond By Leroy Martin
“Hard times, good times and the Blues
In the last two years of the 1930’s, and the first two of the 1940’s, the quality of life in Cajun Louisiana remained stable; peace but no prosperity since the Depression still had the nation in its grip. Bonds of friendship between neighbors and communities existed along with the fact that we were all in the same boat, so let’s sink or swim together. Religious, hardworking and united with old traditions, the Cajuns fared better than others. To visualize the territory, take a Louisiana map and draw a line from Marksville in the north, to Lake Charles in the west, to Boothville in the east, and back to Marksville. Within the mostly rural areas of that triangle resided the Cajuns of Louisiana, ancestors of a people forcefully deported from their Acadian homeland generations ago. For this we are eternally grateful. Although generally believed, President Roosevelt did not single handedly end the Great Depression. World War II did, and at a great cost to all. F.D.R., however, was a great leader and just who we needed in those dark times. He united the country in a common cause as never before or since. He probably saved democracy as we know it, and should be fondly remembered for that. Remember the three pictures on the walls: Jesus, FDR and Huey. As for the Cajuns, most every family had a cow, and sometimes a goat, for milk
and ice cream, chickens for eggs and Sunday dinner, a garden patch for vegetables and pigs for boucheries. To illustrate the era, I quote from an old Jimmie Rodgers’ blues song: “We got pigs at the trough, tators in the patch, and corn in the crib and hens about to hatch. A bull and a cow and a mule and a plow, and there ain’t no hard times here.â€? Maybe we didn’t have all THAT, but his songs spoke for the masses. It was said that a typical store order at that time was “a sack of flour, a jug of wine and the latest Jimmie Rodgers record.â€? I read that quote in over a dozen books, so there had to be some truth in it because he sure was popular, selling millions of records during hard times. As a singing star, he was then what Elvis later became. He died of tuberculosis in 1933 and I later became good friends with his widow ‌ but that’s another story. As for our quality of life, we had no electricity, phone, water, gas or auto repair bills because we read by kerosene lamps (we called it coal oil that sold for 15 cents a gallon), cooked on a wood stove, communicated by rural free delivery, had 3 cent stamps, used our roof to collect water in our cistern (the mosquito larval were lagniappe), and who had a car? The doctor would make house calls at $3.00 a visit and accepted eggs for payment. We had a 5-cent block of ice delivered daily
Depression-era photo of Martin’s grandparents, Irma and Paul Callais
for the icebox. Seafood was plentiful because everyone had at least one fisherman in the family, and we shared, not facebook sharing either. Like the hit song of the times said, “who could ask for anything more?â€? And the boucheries ‌ Ah! The boucheries ‌ crème de la crème! Next week I’ll describe this joyful event in graphic details with a warning, not for the squeamish! Some years ago while attending an assessor forum in St. Louis, Missouri, an oil company representative asked me, not
Jimmie Rodgers
derogatively, but in casual conversation, “How did you Cajuns fare out during the Great Depression?â€? “Not too goodâ€?, I answered. “Sometimes all we had to eat was fried and broiled jumbo shrimp, tenderloin trout, boiled crabs and crawfish, oysters on the half shell, jambalaya, gumbo, fried chicken, pork chops, boudin and ham steaks, all chased down with home brewed beer and wine, and ‌â€? “Stop, enough!â€? he said. “I feel so sorry seeing how you all must have suffered.â€? We had a good laugh and ordered another round. I don’t have any words of humor that would top that. Bye now.

The range opened in October 2013 and is the only one in the state that can boast targets 800 yards down range. Behind that sits the range’s protection berm. Another 400 yards behind that sits the levee, which is a few feet higher than the berm. Previously, Eymard argued one would have to wildly overshoot the target to have any chance of reaching the levee. Eymard’s Shooting Academy will close the range for the month of September so the necessary improvements can be done to upgrade the protection levee. Eymard said the shooting range should re-open on October 1.

battery on February 15, 2011, and therefore, could not possess a firearm per the new state law. Deputies confirmed Head received a letter sent by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office informing him of the new law and that he could not possess a firearm for 10 years due to his 2011 conviction. Head was charged with domestic abuse battery and possession of a firearm or carrying of a concealed weapon by a person convicted of domestic abuse battery. He is being held in lieu of $15,000 bond as set by Judge Walter I. Lanier III. Michael Head is the first individual to be charged for the violation of the new statute created by House Bill 753. The bill was named in honor of Susan “Pixie Gouaux who was shot and killed on December 26, 2013, during a shooting spree by her former son-in-law, Ben Freeman. Freeman also killed his wife, Denise Freeman, and his former boss, Ochsner St. Anne Hospital CEO Milton Bourgeois, before taking his own life that night. Gouaux’s husband, Lafourche Parish Councilman Phillip Gouaux, and their daughter, Andrea Gouaux, were both shot and injured in the shootings that night along with Bourgeois’ wife, Ann. In addition to the 10year prohibition for those convicted of domestic abuse battery, the bill further prohibits those subject to a protective order from carrying a firearm for the duration of the order.

Election
From 1-A
their way through the courts and more candidates dropping out of races after paying their filing fees. The history-making election cycle is causing Schedler to consider recommending changes to the timeline for candidate signups — and is certain to have names on the ballot in the Nov. 4 election of people who were deemed unqualified to run or have dropped out of the race. “At some point we’ve got to pull the trigger and let that ballot go to print, and that’s it, he said. “We al-
ready know that it won’t be cleared up by the time for ballots to be printed. Voters will be deciding dozens of judgeships, two seats on the state’s utility regulatory agency and 43 district attorney positions. Across the state, people will select mayors, school board members, police chiefs, city councilmen and other local officials. At the top of the ballot is the U.S. Senate race, with Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu trying to win re-election amid tight competition, and all six U.S. House seats. Overall, more than 2,400 offices are up for election, with 4,400 candidates signed up. At least 60 contenders have withdrawn so far. Meanwhile, objections to 53 candidates’ qualifications were filed in court, including allegations that people don’t live where required to run for a specific office or that they have unpaid ethics fines and can’t run again. “When I talk to people who have been around here 20, 30 years, no one can ever recall 53 challenges, Schedler said. The lawsuits seem to be a sign of the times, where opponents seek to have candidates thrown off the ballot as a means of defeating them. The tactic already has proven successful in getting some contenders disqualified. About 10 weeks separate the close of the election registration period in August and the November election. Because federal elections are on the ballot, tighter timelines kicked in governing the paper ballots sent to Louisiana voters overseas or members of the military stationed away from home. Schedler said those already went to the printer quickly after qualifying. More ballots for the voting booth are being printed every day. Any votes cast for a candidate who has been either disqualified or who formally withdrew from the
Wednesday, September 10, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
race will not be tallied, Schedler said, taking away potential votes for other candidates. Notices will be inserted with paper ballots identifying any candidates who are no longer in the race by Sept. 20, when the ballots are mailed. At polling places, similar notices will be posted near the sample ballot and commissioners should direct voters to a list of candidates who should no longer be considered, said Schedler spokeswoman Meg Casper. Also, sample ballots online and on the office’s mobile app will be up to date with the current slate of candidates, for those willing to do their research. But the secretary of state thinks the experience with elections this fall warrants a larger change. He’s
5-A
planning to ask state lawmakers next year to set the candidate qualifying period two weeks earlier, to give elections officials more time to get caught up with disqualifications and withdrawals, so the ballot can more accurately reflect the field of true candidates. Pushback is expected from some lawmakers, who likely will view an earlier candidate registration period as creating a longer — and more expensive — campaign period. Schedler acknowledges that as a candidate for re-election next year, he’s not thrilled with the concept. “This at least needs to be looked at, because our job is to make things easier for the voter, not more complicated, he said.

Trojans roll in home opening win; Tarpons fall to state power Casey Gisclair Contributing Writer
Central Lafourche head football coach Keith Menard wasn’t afraid to tell reporters his disappointment with how poorly the Trojans played last week in the South Lafourche Jamboree, calling it one of the most disappointing performances in his short career as the team’s coach. Menard’s vocal frustrations must have sent a message to Central Lafourche’s players. Because riding off the disappointing effort, the Trojans rebounded and won the first game of the regular season. Thanks to a dominant defensive effort, Central walloped Franklin in the opening game of the season in a dominant 24-0 victory.

The Trojans limited their foe to just 75 total yards in the win – a total 180 from the team’s 22-0 exhibition loss a week prior against Belle Chasse where Central Lafourche was routinely gashed for big plays in the running game. “I thought we did a nice job tonight – a nice start to the season, Menard said after the win. “I thought we really set the tempo on defense with how we sort of dominated the line of scrimmage and caused some problems for them. It wasn’t perfect. We still have plenty to work on. But to start the season, I think it was a job well done. The Trojans controlled the game from its earliest minutes. The first points in the victory came on a nine play, 80-yard opening drive that Central capped with a one-yard touchdown run from halfback Da’Quan Gray with 7:03 to go in the first quarter of play. A failed two-point conversion attempt gave the Trojans a 60 lead. The talented Trojans’ ball carrier set up his own score a few plays before the touchdown with a 46-yard scamper that put Central deep into Franklin territory. After a quiet end to the first quarter, Central added seven points to its lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Austin

Tarpons crushed by state powerhouse
While Central Lafourche rejoiced a season-opening victory, the South Lafourche football team was busy struggling against arguably the best public school in all of Class 4A. The Tarpons traveled to Algiers on Friday night for a non-district battle with Landry-Walker. The opening minutes were competitive and exciting, but by halftime, the drama was over as the Chargin’ Bucs roared to an easy 54-15 win. The loss marks the second-straight year that the Tarpons fall to LandryWalker to open the season. The metro-based public school scored a 7-0 victory to open the 2013 season in Galliano. “Landry-Walker is a great football team, South Lafourche head football coach Dennis Skains said. “They did some things that gave us some problems and we had some breakdowns and some other things that we have to correct going forward as we get ready for the second week of the season. Early in the game, it
looked like South Lafourche was prime for an upset of the Chargin’ Bucs, who opened the season ranked as the No. 3 team in the state in Class 4A. Landry-Walker fell behind 2-0 on their opening drive when senior defensive tackle Marvel Bourgeois plunged through the line of scrimmage and sacked the Chargin’ Bucs’ quarterback in the end zone for a safety. After yielding a touchdown to fall behind 8-2, the Tarpons fired back again when junior quarterback Harvey Allen rushed for a 13-yard touchdown to put South Lafourche ahead 98. Allen set up his own touchdown one play before when he broke through the line of scrimmage and scampered 63 yards deep into Landry-Walker territory. But after the early onslaught, the Tarpons had no answer for the Chargin’ Bucs, who dominated the rest of the game. LandryWalker’s up-tempo, fastpaced offense scored 38-straight points in the final 17 minutes of the first half to send the Bucs into halftime with a 46-9 lead. From there, LandryWalker slowed its tempo and ended its scoring onslaught in the second half, getting just a lone thirdquarter touchdown to go ahead 54-9 Not wanting to go home without a fight, the Tarpons’ offense showed pride in the final seconds, driving down the field and scoring a touchdown on the game’s final play on a six-yard scamper from Allen – his second touchdown of the day, which sent the game to its final score. The Tarpons will return home this week and play host to South Plaquemines at 7 p.m.

Aucoin connected with receiver Logan Maronge for a 44-yard touchdown strike. Kicker Brader Dufrene’s PAT lifted Central’s lead to 13-0 with 10:19 to go in the opening half. After forcing a change of possession, the Trojans added eight more points to their tally when halfback Thomas Wesley scampered 67 yards past Franklin’s defense and into the end zone. A successful twopoint try put the Trojans up 21-0 – a lead they carried into halftime. In the second half, the tempo of the game slowed down greatly as Franklin’s offense continued to struggle and the Trojans worked to salt away the clock. The final points of the game came late in the third quarter when Dufrene buried a short field goal to run the score to 24-0, which turned out to be the game’s final margin. With the win, Central Lafourche will stay at home this week for a non-district matchup with J.S. Clark. Menard said he wants his team to continue to build leading into district play. “Just keep progressing, Menard said. “We want to correct some of our mistakes and keep working. We have a long road to go, but it’s always good to get the first one. We’re happy about that. ___

Skains said the opening-week blowout loss is a disappointment, but after viewing the film, he noticed something that he sees as a positive. “We saw the tape and saw what we expected to see, Skains said. “And that’s that we have some guys here who are a heck of a football player. We will work hard to correct our
mistakes and we’ll make sure that we’re lined up properly and all of those things. “But there’s no one in here that’s going to get discouraged or quit or anything like that. We still have all of our goals ahead of us and that’s the thing that I love about these kids – there’s no quit in them. None at all.

Saints aim to correct fundamental errors BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro rattled off some of the basics of tackling that are taught in youth football as he discussed where the focus of New Orleans’ defense should be this week. “We’ve just got to get back to fundamentals,” Vaccaro said Monday. “Keep your eyes up. Wrap up. Take it back to Pop Warner.” Vaccaro was not alone in suggesting that New Orleans’ season-opening, 3734 overtime loss at Atlanta had a lot to do with the basics. “As far as game-planning, schemes, it’s not about that,” pass-rushing outside linebacker Junior Galette said. “It’s high effort and tackling better. “It does not matter who we’re playing, we’ve got to go out there and take it,” Galette added. “We’ve got to have that same mentality every week — and we’ll have that.” This Sunday, the Saints (0-1) will play at Cleveland (0-1), which is also coming off of a close loss to a divisional foe, 3027 at Pittsburgh. With so much season remaining, the Saints don’t want to blow last weekend’s setback out of proportion, but they also made it clear that there’s a sense of urgency to clean up the areas that cost them what was very nearly a valuable road victory. “You can look at it as, there’s enough time to improve,” Saints defensive tackle Akiem Hicks began.

“But there’s also enough time to get worse. “We’re still the New Orleans Saints,” Hicks added. “We don’t expect to ever lose, especially the first game of the year. So that’s definitely going to touch you and that’s definitely going to make you want to come in the next week and perform better.” The Saints have high hopes this season for a defense that ranked fourth in the NFL in 2013, allowing 399.4 yards per game. The unit has most of its top young players back and added star safety Jairus Byrd in free agency. The defense is also in its second season under coordinator Rob Ryan, so players are expected to be more comfortable with their scheme. Yet New Orleans allowed the Falcons to pile up 568 total yards on Sunday. Matt Ryan set a Falcons franchise single-game record with 448 yards passing. Cornerback Keenan Lewis said that in addition to working on their tackling, Saints defenders need to communicate a little better. “We’ll get it fixed,” he said. “First game — sometimes they go like that.” He added that Ryan and his receiving corps, featuring Julio Jones, Roddy White and Devin Hester, deserve some credit. “They’re one of the best in the league as far as their receiving corps and their quarterback,” Lewis said. The Saints also struggled to get pressure on Ryan, registering just one sack.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Ryan has “always been a difficult sack,” but added, “With the amount of times he threw the football, we’d like to see more disruption than that. I think we need to be better in that area.” Payton wasn’t too critical of his offense, which gained 333 yards in the air and 139 on the ground, and produced some big gains, such as Marques Colston’s 57-yard reception. But the coach lamented the fact that New Orleans could not do better than field goals on a pair of early drives inside the Atlanta 35, and that the offense committed a pair of costly turnovers.
The Saints were inside the Atlanta 20, looking to build on a 20-17 lead, when Drew Brees threw an interception in the end zone in the third quarter. Then in overtime, Colston fumbled away a first-down catch in Saints territory, setting up Atlanta’s winning field goal. “We felt like we were pretty balanced and moved the ball well,” center Jonathan Goodwin said. “Of course, you want to eliminate the two turnovers, and in those first two drives, get touchdowns instead of field goals. Things like that can come back to haunt you.” Indeed, they did. Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL

BRYAN LAZARE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — When LSU has looked to air it out, the results have been promising. Evidence is mounting that the 10th-ranked Tigers’ young quarterbacks and receivers can provide balance to an offense that was expected to rely heavily on the run. Now it sounds like Miles is going to keep pushing his top two quarterbacks to expand their repertoire when LSU hosts unbeaten Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night. Sophomore Anthony Jennings has thrown for 427 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions so far, solidifying his hold on the starting quarterback job ahead of freshman Brandon Harris. “Anthony has done the things that we would expect him to do,” Miles said Monday. “There are things we’re going to ask him to do and he needs to do those. That’s what his focus is and that’s what we want it to be. He’s done a great job to this point and he needs to continue to improve.” Harris, meanwhile, played five series in LSU’s 56-0 demolition of Sam Houston State last weekend and strung together five confidence-building completions for 62 yards and one touchdown. That performance only seemed to encourage Miles to stick with a two-quarterback system, even if Jennings
takes the majority of the snaps. Jennings, meanwhile, said he doesn’t like to view Harris as competition for the job, but rather as a teammate who is trying to help LSU win, just like he is. “It’s up to the coaches to decide when and who is in the game at the time, but I have the utmost confidence in myself and in him to lead the Tigers to victory,” Jennings said. Harris’ scoring pass was an 8-yarder to true freshman Malachi Dupre. Both Dupre and Trey Quinn, another true freshman, caught two passes apiece. The Tigers are hoping that pair will round out a receiving corps currently led by redshirt sophomore Travin Dural, who has six catches for 291 yards and four TDs, and redshirt freshman John Diarse, who has four receptions for 77 yards and a score. LSU was expected to field a run-heavy offense — at least early this season — because of the inexperience lost in the passing game after the departures for the NFL of senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger and junior receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. Certainly, LSU is handing the ball off more often, rushing on 105 of 144 total plays. But LSU has more total yards and touchdowns through the air (489 yards, six TDs) than on the ground (460 yards, five TDs). See LSU Page 10-A

Audit: State pays high lease rates to Saints owner 10-A
Wednesday, September 10, 2014 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana state agencies are paying above-market rates to rent office space from New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, and the state is paying $625,000 for space it isn’t using, according to an audit released Monday. Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera’s office reviewed the lease, which was negotiated by Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration in 2009 as part of a package of incentives that replaced a previous state deal with the NFL team. The deal keeps the Saints in New Orleans through 2025 and scrapped direct cash incentive payments the state had been making to Benson, in exchange for improvements to the New Orleans Superdome and the office lease arrangement. The Jindal administration has said the deal saves the state millions it would have paid under the old deal, while also keeping an economic driver for the state. Louisiana entered into a long-term lease to rent about 323,000 square feet of office space in downtown New Orleans from Benson’s company Zelia LLC, consolidating state agency leases from around the city into one building, now called Benson Tower. Agencies moved into the building in February 2011, and the lease runs through December 2025. The audit says the state pays annual rent of about $7.5 million and another $625,000 for vacant space, up from about $4.6 million in 2010 before the rental deal with Benson. “Lease costs, including amounts paid for vacant space, have nearly doubled since 2010 and exceed cur-

rent market rates for comparable properties in the New Orleans area,” auditors wrote. Before moving agencies into Benson Tower, the state paid an average of $17.66 per square foot of office space. If agencies had stayed in their previous locations, they would now be paying an average of $19 per square foot, the audit says.
To Benson, the state this year is paying $25.12 per square foot, and the rate can increase yearly with an inflationary adjustment, according to the audit. Mark Moses, director of the Jindal administration’s Office of Facility Planning and Control, defended the office lease arrangement. He said the reworked deal with the Saints saved

has been trying to sublease the vacant space the state is renting and is working on a list of possible tenants outside of state government. Purpera’s office warns that the state could run into trouble using federal dollars to pay for the abovemarket rate rental price and could be forced to repay the money. “State agencies have expressed concern with the Division of Administration
that annual rental rates charged to federal programs may not meet the definition of reasonable and cost-effective under federal program guidelines,” auditors wrote.

Not that Miles is disappointed. In fact, the running back corps, which features seniors Terrence Magee and Kenny Hilliard, is looking increasingly deep, given contributions made by freshmen Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams. Fournette ran for 92 yards and one touchdown, and caught two passes for another 32 yards against the Bearkats. Darrel Williams, playing for the first time, had 14 carries for 65 yards and a score. The early contributions of true freshmen receivers and running backs are main reasons Miles sounds increasingly optimistic about how quickly his youngest players are coming along. “The growth that is needed to take place there certainly is being done,” Miles said. “As soon as you get a young guy on-field game experiences, it drives home the teaching point you have in the practice schedule. “The youth of our team needs to understand the things they do in practice makes a difference in what they do on Saturdays,” Miles added. “This team is improving daily. I have to make sure that continues. If that continues, we may not be only a pretty good team today, but we may be good enough later, too.”
Louisiana more than $280 million that it would have otherwise paid in cash subsidies, while also getting Benson to invest in vacant property and generating millions in economic activity for the region. “The New Orleans Saints are an important part of Louisiana’s culture as well as an economic driver for New Orleans and the rest of the state,” Moses wrote. Chick-fil-A restaurant founder died at age 93
ATLANTA (AP) — S. Truett Cathy, the billionaire founder of the privately held Chick-fil-A restaurant chain that famously closes on Sundays but also drew unwanted attention on gay marriage in recent years because of his family’s conservative views, died early Monday, a company spokesman said. He was 93. Chick-fil-A spokesman Mark Baldwin told The Associated Press that Cathy died at home surrounded by members of his family. Cathy opened his first postwar diner in an Atlanta suburb in 1946 and by 1967 he had founded and opened his first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta. Over ensuing decades, the chain’s boneless chicken sandwich he is credited with inventing would propel Chick-fil-A expansion to more than 1,800 outlets in 39 states and the nation’s capital. By early 2013, the company says on its website, annual sales topped $5 billion as the chain offered up a taste of the South that went beyond chicken to such offerings as sweet tea, biscuits and gravy. Under the religiously conservative founder, the chain gained prominence for its Bible Belt observance of Sunday — none of its hundreds of restaurants are open on that day, to allow employees a day of rest. Its executives often said the chain made as much money in six days as its competitors do in seven. _____________

The duchess was being treated at Kensington Palace for severe morning sickness, Clarence House said. She suffered from morning sickness during her first pregnancy with Prince George, who was born in July 2013. Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “delighted by the happy news that they’re expecting another baby. U.S. gas prices fall, extending summer decline
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A national survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped 2 cents over the last two weeks, to $3.46, bringing the decline to 25 cents over the last 11 weeks. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that falling crude oil prices drove the declines, although the drop was more moderate than earlier this summer. If crude prices don’t rise, Lundberg says prices at the pump may fall more as refiners shift to winter-grade gasoline, which costs less to produce. Baton Rouge had the lowest price among cities surveyed in the lower 48 states, with $3.11 a gallon. San Francisco had the highest at $3.88 a gallon. The average price for a gallon of midgrade gasoline was $3.67 a gallon, and premium was $3.83. _____________

Edwin Edwards in the race for the state’s 6th Congressional District seat. Monday’s announcement acknowledges that the conservative southeast Louisiana district, now represented by Republican Bill Cassidy, is “challenging terrain for a Democrat. It makes no mention of the four-term former governor’s corruption conviction and the eight years he spent in federal prison. Cassidy is giving up the seat to run against Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in the Nov. 4 election. cheese Extra-virgin olive oil Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds. Cut into 1-inch chunks (there’s no need to remove the edible skin). Arrange on a baking sheet and spray or brush with olive oil. Season with the salt and pepper. Roast 10 to 15 minutes, until tender. Allow to cool. Fill a large pot with water, add salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until just tender. Drain, rinse and set aside.
Remove the leaves of the kale from the stems and cut into large pieces. Set up a steaming basket over boiling water and steam the kale just until it is bright green, about 2 minutes. Remove and plunge into ice water to stop the cooking and keep them bright green. Toast the pine nuts in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat until light brown, 3 to 5 minutes. (Stay nearby while you are toasting. Left unattended, the nuts can easily burn.) Combine the pasta, kale, squash, and pine nuts in a large bowl. Toss, and then add the cheese. Taste and adjust the seasonings.
