Low-cost counseling available to clients below poverty line Gazette Staff Reports
The New Life Counseling Center’s mission statement reads that the local facility seeks to “make a positive difference in the lives of children, youth and adults in the South Lafourche community.” This past week, the counseling center got assurance that it will be able to do exactly that both now and into the future – thanks to a sizeable grant that will allow the facility to expand its services to clients. New Life recently announced that it was the recipient of a $6,000 grant provided by the Bayou Community Foundation – money that will go toward providing counseling for as little as $10/session for natives with incomes below the poverty line. O n Thursday evening, A u g u s t 8th, a Toast & Roast BanSidney Triche quet will be held at the Larose Civic Center to honor one of this community’s outstanding citizens. For more than 60 years, Sidney Triche has been an active and vital part of the civic, cultural and business success of the south Lafourche area. “Sidney’s commitment to church, community, and family is worthy of recognition,” said Brent Duet, a member of a committee made up of community leaders who wanted to bring attention to this man’s life long contribution to our area. The committee decided to pay tribute to Sidney by having a fun Roast & Toast dinner at the Larose Civic Center to recognize all he has done and to raise some funds for a few of his favorite charities. Monies raised at this event will go to the Bayou Civic Club, Inc., Holy Rosary Catholic School, and Fish the Bayou, (Dusty Richardel Scholarship Fund). Individual’s tickets are $50 each. Corporate sponsors will pay $1000 for tables of 12 and be invited to a Meet & Greet pre-event. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Larose Civic Center at 985-693-7355. See Triche Page 6-A

The Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo was by all accounts a huge success. Kaylie Bourg is pictured with rodeo weighmaster Marty Bourgeois. This was Kaylie’s first year fishing the rodeo in the adult fishing category. Kaylie has been fishing since the age of 5 in the children’s division.
Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo a hit Gazette Sports Reports
The weather stayed dry. Of course, that meant the temperatures stayed warm. And the fish in the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding marshlands of Golden Meadow, Leeville and Fourchon cooperated and bit the bait. Combine that with a large turnout, lively bands and an abundance of food and drinks and one can easily state the obvious: the Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo was a serious hit. The annual rodeo took place throughout the Independence Day weekend at Moran’s Marina in Fourchon. Hundreds of thousands of fish were caught and weighed during the three-day event, which crowned champions in multiple categories. At night, musical acts entertained the crowds, which turned out in droves to support the event, which enjoyed its first year under its new re-

branding efforts – a successful one, according to folks who organized and helped plan the week. “The week has been a big success,” 2015 Rodeo Admiral Eddie Callais said. “We’re a family event. That’s something that we will always be. We had a lot of kids compete. We had a lot of kayakers compete. We gave all the kids who fished a rod and a bag with some tackle. It’s all been great. We’ve all had a great time and a very enjoyable week.” On the final day of weigh-ins, it was a Baton Rouge man who snagged arguably the fish of the week. J.J. Tabor, of Baton Rouge, hauled in a massive, 206-pound, 3-ounce grouper that wowed the audience at the weigh station. See Rodeo Page 6-A

Some students could see higher fees at NSU this year
Some Nicholls State University students could pay higher fees this year according to Nicholls President Bruce Murphy. The authority to raise fees on individual programs is new for colleges and universities. State lawmakers passed House Bill 151 this year, which is a “way to generate revenue for high-cost programs,” state Higher Education Commissioner Joseph Rallo said. Murphy has been critical of the practice of raising tuition and fees to offset fewer state dollars. He has instead turned his focus to increasing the university’s declining enrollment See Nicholls Page 7-A

Cut Off man arrested for kidnapping A Cut Off man was arrested after kidnapping a juvenile early Sunday morning. Kaleb Bruce, 21, was arrested following an investigation into the incident. Through investigation, detectives learned two male juveniles of ages 12 and 15 were walking along West 163rd Street in Galliano during the early morning hours of Sunday, July 5, when Bruce pulled up alongside. Bruce, who was known to the boys, then allegedly grabbed the 12-year-old and placed him in the rear seat of his vehicle. He also had placed a duffel bag over the boy’s face and tied his hands together. Detectives learned the boy was able to escape within about 15 minutes and called for help. Detectives made contact with Bruce and questioned him about the incident. Bruce admitted to being on West 163rd Street and making contact with the juveniles. He said he went there to enter into a physical altercation with a man who was related to the 12-year-old boy. After obtaining consent to search Bruce’s vehicle, detectives

Political Campaign Songs II
The world my generation inhabited in the 1950s and 60s was greatly different than today. Radio was still dominant but television would soon relagate it to a niche of only music and talk, a mere shadow of its former self. There were no PC’s, IPhones, IPads or even IHops. One of the few things we had in common were theme songs. Every form of entertainment, bands, radio and TV programs, movie cartoons, serials, short subjects, (March of Time, Three Stooges, newsreels, etc.), had its own theme song. Radio had Dragnet … Dum De Dum Dum, and The Long Ranger’s William Tell Overture. Television had Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch which most people knew by heart. Movies had The Godfather
theme and Jaws, which still shivers my spine, and political campaigns such as FDR’s “Happy Days Are Here Again”, “I Like Ike”, and JFK’s “High Hopes”, sung by Frank Sinatra. In Lafourche Parish, we followed the custom and my custom was to seek customers to write custom songs for: “Insurance Checks” to the tune of “Shrimp Boats” for Senator Caillouet; “South to Louisiana” for Robichaux/Landry; “I Got The Fever” for Dick Guidry; “Open Up Your Heart” for Francis Dugas; and “I Got A Tiger By The Tail” for two separate candidates, all with appropriate and timely lyrics. In 1968 boat magnate Minor Cheramie ordered two, one for Sheriff Eddie St. Marie and one for Gover-
nor John McKeithen, both running for re-election. What a dilemma as St. Marie was actively opposing my boss, the assessor, so I couldn’t be identified. Solution? I hired a singer from Lafayette and eliminated all credits. No one ever knew … until now! It was evident that the sheriff and governor and my other clients were all going to be re-elected. Confession: I did not vote for all of the candidates I wrote songs for, but all’s well that ends well. I also wrote songs for friends running for civic club offices like my fellow employee Lillian Duet, running for District President of her women’s club and Police Juror Larry Uzee, running for District President of the Lions Club and two songs for the Thibodaux Fireman’s fair requested by Thibodaux Mayor Warren Harang, Jr. I sang a Dixieland number with Ted Hoffman’s Band and Vin Bruce sang a Cajun one. Well financed, we recorded with two bands in a real studio. All the others were recorded at home or KTIB. Both candidates won and … well, the Thibodaux Firemen are always winners. My clients received praise for the professionalism of the records. Profes-
sional? Expensive? Yes and no. Today karaoke has made music tracts available to anyone. Not then! Having possession of such material was unheard of, but here’s a secret: I recorded on a 2tract recorder with a separate recorder playing the music tracks as we listened and sung with earphones. How were the music tracts acquired? No larceny involved. A friend of mine was a recording engineer in Nashville and sold me music tracts of hits by the biggest stars including Buck Owens and Eddie Arnold. The charge was $50 per and I had to pick from those he engineered. Legal? For me, yes. For him, I don’t know, I never asked. I wrote appropriate new lyrics, recorded over the music tracks and “Voila” a campaign song with a wellknown hit melody was born. For St. Marie and McKeithen I used the same music tract, Buck Owens’ “I’ve got a Tiger by the Tail” Examples: “Let’s all vote for Eddie St. Marie, let’s give him another victory. As our sheriff he won’t ever fail. Law and order will prevail”. And: “Let’s all vote McKeithen once again. We all know that he deserves to win. He will serve us all through thick or thin. Let’s all vote for Big John once again.” If you’re curious, a single-track medley is available for MP3, PC or IPhone on ITunes. Next week, I find a cowriter, a most prominent citizen. BYE NOW!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service is offering an Elvis Presley greatest hits CD to go along with a new commemorative stamp. “ELVIS FOREVER” will be available online and in select post offices beginning Aug. 12 along with the stamp, which features a black-and-white image of the young “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The stamp and CD are part of this year’s Elvis Week celebration in Memphis, Tennessee. The RCA/Legacy Recordings album includes 18 Elvis hits and a new performance of “If I Can Dream.” The Postal Service featured Elvis on a stamp in 1993, one of the most popular commemorative stamps of all time. ___
Man shoots off firework from top of his head, dies instantly
CALAIS, Maine (AP) — A 22-year-old man who was drinking and celebrating
the Fourth of July tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, killing him instantly, authorities said Sunday. Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend’s home in eastern Maine. Staples, 22, of Calais, a small city on the Canadian border, placed a reloadable fireworks mortar tube on his head and told his friends he was going to light it. But his friends urged him to stop. Staples’s brother Cody told the Daily News of New York that he was a few feet away when his brother lit the firework and was the first to come to his side after it exploded. “There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there,” said 25-year-old Cody Staples, who called it an accident. In Montana on Saturday, a 32-year-old man was killed at a Billings home in a fireworks accident involving a mortar tube. And in New Jersey, a 52-year-old man blew off a large piece of his left leg below the knee when he set off a tennis-ball sized firework in Leonia. ___
Exhibit opens about black experience in WWII
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — About to be overrun by Germans, a young black lieutenant called in an artillery barrage on his own position, knowing he’d be killed. It was the only way to hold off the enemy. The sacrifice by 1st Lt. John Fox is one of many endured by the 100,000 African-American service members during World War II and is now the focus of an exhibit at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Titled “Fighting for the Right to Fight: The African American Experience in WWII,” the exhibit runs from July 4 through May 30, 2016. It describes discrimination before and after the war as well as in the military during World War II. The exhibit also includes an original 8 1/2 -

Alligator kills 28-year-old Texas man during swim
ORANGE, Texas (AP) — A man was killed early Friday when an alligator attacked him during a late-night swim at a Southeast Texas marina, according to police. Orange police Capt. Robert Enmon said Tommie Woodward, 28, suffered severe trauma to a limb when he was attacked early Friday morning at the private marina, which is along a bayou extending from the Sabine River near the Louisiana line. Orange County sheriff’s deputies and a Texas game warden found his body nearby about two hours later. Police said Woodward, who lived near the marina in Orange, was swimming when it appears he was bitten soon after he jumped in. The owners of the marina recently had spotted a large alligator on a few occasions, and put up a sign warning people to stay out of the water. They estimated that animal was longer than 11 feet. Authorities are not hunting the alligator but a private effort may be launched to capture it, he said. ___
1 coastal Louisiana parish not settling with BP
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The newly announced BP oil spill settlement covers the federal government, the five Gulf states and “the vast majority of local governmental entities” in those states. However, the government of one of Louisiana’s hardest hit areas, coastal Plaquemines Parish, says it has not yet agreed to a settlement. The parish juts out into the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana’s southeastern tip. Oil from the 2010 spill fouled sections of its marshy coastline. In a Thursday news release, the parish government said it could not, in good conscience, settle for the amount it was being offered. Without saying how much it was offered or how much it seeks, the parish said it wants to be able to rebuild pelican nesting grounds and recover millions of dollars in spill-related administrative costs. ___

Baton Rouge will become the home of Brown & Root’s new global headquarters. Company officials announced Monday Brown & Root’s executive team will move from Houston and oversee operations of the company’s more than 6,000 employees, which include the 325 Louisiana employees in Baton Rouge, Mandeville and St. Rose. State officials say the company is expected to bring a total of 925 jobs to Louisiana over the next decade. To secure the project, the state offered Brown & Root a tax incentive package which included a $1.8 million grant to reimburse relocation costs and lease support for the corporate headquarters. Established in 1919 in Texas, Brown & Root moved to Louisiana in 1947. The company has since been a provider of industrial maintenance, engineering and construction services. ___
Phoenix firefighters pull man out of chimney
PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix firefighters have rescued a man who became stuck after trying to re-enter a house through the chimney. Fire Capt. Aaron Ernsberger says it took 30 minutes Sunday morning for firefighters to free the 23year-old man. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Ernsberger says the man’s friends locked him out of the house as a prank. The man thought he could get back inside through the chimney. Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 3 a.m. Phoenix Fire Department video shows firefighters chipping away at a chimney wall and pulling the man out. The man, completely covered in soot, was able to walk but appeared to be limping.
How 5 Gulf Coast states will divide BP oil spill settlement
Wednesday, July 8, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Most of the $18.7 billion proposed settlement that BP reached over its 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill would go to five Gulf Coast states, if the deal is approved by a judge. A portion of the settlement is not assigned to any particular state. Here’s how the state-specific money breaks down, with payments to states being made over nearly two decades:
ALABAMA Alabama would receive $2.3 billion. Gov. Robert Bentley said the settlement would steer $1.3 billion for coastal environmental restoration. He said some of the $1.3 billion has already been paid to the state. Another $1 billion for will go to the state’s general fund as compensation from economic damages from the spill. Bentley said that money, which equates to $55.5 million a year, will help the cash-strapped budget, but will not solve the state’s current fiscal crisis, with lawmakers facing a $200 million deficit next year. FLORIDA Florida would receive $3.25 billion, with about $2 billion for economic loss and the rest distributed throughout the state to environmental projects such as beaches and piers. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Florida would receive more than $400 million for economic losses in early 2016. Three-quarters of that money would go to Triumph Gulf Coast, a trust fund set up by the Legislature, to help the eight counties in the Florida Panhandle that were most affected by the spill. The final 25 percent of the money would be distributed throughout Florida by the Legislature. The remaining money would be distributed over the next 17 years. LOUISIANA Louisiana would receive at least $6.8 billion, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said. Caldwell said the $6.8 billion includes $5 billion for natural resources damages, at least $787 million for civil penalties under the federal Clean Water Act and $1 billion for economic damages caused by the oil spill. Both the natural resources damages and Clean Water Act penalty dollars are expected to be largely used for coastal restoration projects, wetlands and wildlife habitat repair, and environmental rehabilitation. State lawmakers last year agreed to use the economic damages money to refill Louisiana’s “rainy day” fund and an elderly trust fund that had been drained to plug budget gaps. In addition to the $6.8 billion, Louisiana also would receive a share of $600 million BP has agreed to set aside to pay for assessing environmental damage and other state expenses. Caldwell said that would include reimbursement for attor-

neys’ fees and other state litigation expenses. MISSISSIPPI Mississippi would receive about $2.2 billion, Gov. Phil Bryant and Attorney General Jim Hood said. That includes $1.5 billion announced Thursday and $659 announced previously. Most of the $1.5 billion would go toward environmental restoration, with a portion to economic development. The Legislature would decide how to spend $750 million over 17 years. The $659 million announced earlier includes payments to cover environmental damage and other projects. The state Department of Environmental Quality says money will cover several projects, including restoration of marshes and artificial reef habitats, preservation of streams. The department says about $10.4 million will be spent at Infinity Space Center, a tourist attraction run by NASA at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County. TEXAS Texas would receive more than $788 million, Gov. Greg Abbott said. More than $638 million would be used for restoration projects, Attorney General Ken Paxton said. The remaining $150 million would compensate the state for economic damages. In its lawsuit against BP, Texas had argued the oil spill cost the state a variety of tax revenues, including sales taxes, hotel occupancy taxes and mixed beverage taxes. The suit also claimed the spill reduced revenues at three state parks and injured, destroyed or contaminated coastal habitats and a variety of wildlife. Officials with two centers in Texas that are conducting research on the Gulf Coast region in the wake of the oil spill said the settlement money would help with their work.

It won first prize by an astounding 200-plus pounds, outweighing the 5pound, 9-ounce grouper that Jonathan Lindley, of Thibodaux snagged. The victorious grouper was easily the largest fish caught in the entire shoreline division, which had seven total categories. It helped Tabor earn the rodeo’s Outstanding Shoreline Division Fisherman Award. The Baton Rouge native also won the title for King Mackerel, weighing a 45pound, 6-ounce fish. “It’s awesome, Tabor said of the successful rodeo. “We had a great time, and the grouper was huge. As soon as it was hooked, we had an idea that it was a pretty special fish. In the inshore division, a well-known local name shined, as Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter took home first, second and third place for Rat Reds. He weighed fish of 8pounds, 14 ounces, 8pounds, 1-ounce and 7-pounds, 13-ounces to take the title. Sheriff Larpenter also won Rat Red Stringer, weighing in at 36-pounds, 6-ounces. In the kid’s division, Cut Off native Austin Danos also hooked a nice rat red, winning the title

with a 7-pound, 6-ounce lunker. The 2015 rodeo was the first in this annual event’s history that was enjoyed indoors with air conditioning. The rodeo featured a fully cooled tent that provided hospitable conditions to everyone in attendance. That, plus a satellite television system in the tent allowed folks to watch fish being weighed without needing to go outdoors and endure the heat. It all added up to creating a hospitable, home-like feel, which is exactly what Callais and his group were looking for. He said that he wanted to thank all of the event’s sponsors and supporters for allowing things to go as smoothly as they did. “We’re going to take what we did this year and work hard to try and do even better next year, Callais said. “People are telling us they’re having a good time and that they can’t wait to do it again next year.

All donations are tax deductible. Sidney Triche is a life long resident of Larose. He was born in Delta Farms in 1937. His father was an outdoorsman, trapper, and fur buyer who later became a barber. Sidney attributes his love for fishing and hunting to his dad. He also says a hard work ethic and generous spirit came from his father. His mom was a strong spiritual influence teaching him the importance of God and family. Going to church every day during Lent and serving as an alter boy every Sunday while coming from a strong family must have paid off. Sidney has served as a Lector at Holy Rosary Church for 33 years and has been married to Annette Guidry Triche for
58 years. In high school, Sidney participated in FFA and 4H Club activities such as chorus, the debate team and public speaking where he won state recognition. That ability would follow him favorably throughout his life. He also played six-man football at LCO and won the state championship in 1952. He attended SLI a couple of years but returned to Larose to get married, become a barber, and work alongside his dad for 9 years. Sid married Annette in 1957 and they had four daughters, Cyd, Michelle, Lilly and Carmen. Living in a two-bedroom house and working as a barber, he knew he had to find a better job. That opportunity came when he met a New York Life Insurance agent who encouraged him to sell life insurance. It didn’t take Sidney long to rise to become one of the top NYL agents in the United States. This year Sid celebrates 50 years with New York Life. Another long-term commitment Sidney has made is as a member of the Lafourche Parish Water District. He has served on the board for 44 years, and president for the past 21 years. Sidney’s community involvement has probably touched every family in the south Lafourche area and beyond. Here are a few of his activities: - First president of the South Lafourche High School Booster Club - Selected Small Businessman of the Year by the South Lafourche Chamber of Commerce - President and General Chairman of the Golden Meadow Tarpon Rodeo - President of the Nicholls Colonel Club with Vernon Galliano - Represented New York Life Ins. on the National Political Action Committee in D.C. Elected to the Lafourche Parish School Board from 1962 to 1968 - One of the originators of the Krewe of Versailles – serving as King in 1988. - Volunteered as an auctioneer for community organizations since 1960 Sidney Triche is being honored for his years of service to the community he lives in. Besides his personal involvement in family, church, and a successful career, he is most valued as an auctioneer for just about every local festival, fair and civic club from Lockport to Grand Isle. He has helped to raise millions of dollars locally for charities, churches and good causes. A later article will focus on the organizations he has helped and more about his very active participation in this community. Please make plans now to help us honor Sidney Triche.
Counseling From 1-A
The grant lasts from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 or however long the $6,000 lasts in providing discounted rates to local clients. According to New Life Counseling Center Executive Director Matt Dickinson, the entire process has been a gamechanger in providing locals with the help that they may need to overcome the many difficult obstacles that occur throughout life. “We charged based on a sliding scale based on one’s income, and our lowest fee right now is currently $45, Dickinson said. “But what this grant will do is it’ll pay $35 of that $45 for people, meaning that they can get our services for as little as $10 if they can provide proof that their income is on the poverty line or below it. “We’re excited about it. It’s a great thing. We just need to make sure that we can get that information out to the public now so that everyone knows that this is something that’s available – right here on our bayou.
holds a Ph. D in psychology and counseling. Dickinson said he will do his due diligence on the project, as well – specifically in terms of finances. The overall goal, of course, is to increase the quality of life and the experiences of everyone locally so that we can be a happier, more united community. Dickinson said he smiles with pride every time he sees a client come into the facility and gets the much-needed help that he/she needs. That feeling of pride becomes even warmer and stronger when the client then progresses and finds that balance and happiness that was lacking. To know that this can happen to more people around the area is something that Dickinson said he and the entire staff at New Life Counseling Center is proud of and will never take for granted. “When those things happen, it’s definitely awesome, Dickinson said. “We’re one of the only counseling firms that’s this far south. This is something that we’re proud of and something that we hope can take care of a lot of the people who live in our area. To schedule an appointment with New Life Counseling Center, call 632-7797.
The Cut Off-based facility is one where folks can get any number of counseling services. Dickinson said that New Life offers parenting, relationship, substance abuse, anger management anxiety and depression counseling, among other offerings. “We pretty much run the gamut in respect to our counseling services, Dickinson said. That wide range of expertise means that almost anyone locally in poverty with a demand for a counselor can benefit from what’s being offered. According to the grant, the poverty line for an individual is anyone with an annual income at or below $11,770. For each dependent added to a family, the annual income per family rises by $4,140. The proposal was titled “Access to Care because New Life “believes that is what this program offers to the underserved in our community. It then states that “funding would allow us to serve many additional families each month who could not otherwise receive counseling. “We have a lot of people who come in and they just can’t afford that $45 fee, Dickinson said. “It’s unfortunate. But with this, a lot of those people who couldn’t get help will now be able to do so. Clinical Director Kristyn S. Carver will oversee the project. She is a licensed professional counselor, board-approved supervisor and she also

Yellowfin Elite Series coming to Lafourche Parish Some of the best redfish anglers in the country are going to try their luck in the fish-happy brackish waters of Lafourche Parish this weekend. When it’s all said and done, the one who is crowned champion will walk away with $10,000 cash. The Academy Sports and Outdoors Yellowfin Elite Series will hold the “Lafourche Open” this weekend in Leeville from Thursday, July 9, to Saturday, July 11, at Topwater Marina. A total of 40 anglers will compete in an event which will pay out $10,000 to the winner and will be filmed, produced and aired on Destination America. Anglers from all over the South will compete for the prize, but there will be locals on hand, too – many, many locals. Paul Dufrene IV is the circuit’s 2014 Angler of the Year and fellow South Lafourche High School graduate Lance Reynolds has enjoyed big-time success, as well. Raceland native Chad Billiot is also expected to compete in the weekend, which will mark the series’
Gazette Sports Reports
final stop in Louisiana before heading out west to Texas to complete its season. “It’s really a blessing,” Dufrene said of his opportunity to fish professionally in addition to his work at Dufrene Building Materials. “It’s a chance to stay competitive in something and we all have a lot of fun. … There’s a lot of strategy that’s involved. It’s more than just catching fish. It’s competitive, but it’s a blast.” “What an awesome experience,” Reynolds added. “Coming from such a competitive background playing sports, red fishing allows me to continue this competitive nature against the very best that there is to offer.” And this event will bring them all right here to the salty shores of Southeastern Louisiana. The Yellowfin Elite Series has been rapidly growing and expanding throughout the past few years in the south. About five years ago, outdoorsmen and businessmen Pat Malone and Will Fowler, with HT3 Outdoors, decided to delve into redfish tournaments after previously doing bass fishing events.
There have been a few evolutions of the format and name changes along the way, but in 2014, the Yellowfin Elite Redfish Series was born, which is the circuit still in place today. The rules of the tournaments pit one angler per boat in a head-to-head competition. When it’s all said and done for a given week, the person who logs the most weight within their string of fish is declared champion and given the prize money. Over the long haul, anglers are given points based on how they finish, and the results of the Lafourche Open will count toward that tally in the 2015 season. Since starting the Yellowfin Elite Series, countless local anglers have competed in the events – most of whom have competed favorably and have done our area proud. At press-time, all of the top four anglers in the 2015 Yellowfin Elite Series points chase were from our bayou. Former NFL player and South Lafourche graduate Nicky Savoie holds the lead with 787 points, followed by Dufrene, Reynolds and Billiot, who lag back with 786, 782 and 769, respectively. Penalties are given to fishermen who weigh dead fish, and there’s a limit of five fish per day per angler. All 40 fishermen will compete in the first two days of the tournament, but only the top tier will compete on Saturday – the day the champion is crowned. Camera crews will be on-site for all three days, which promises to give locals a fishing experience like this area has never seen before. The whole thing is considered amazing to those who do it. Both Reynolds and Dufrene said they never expected to fish professionally. But they love it. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to be considered a semi-pro angler,” Reynolds said. “I started fishing tournaments because of the competitive nature and opportunity to compete against the very best. Boy, has it been a fun ride so far.” “It’s really something that’s memorable,” Dufrene added. “You get to know a lot of the other guys and you just make a lot of good memories. I’m really blessed for this opportunity, and I look forward to continuing in the future.”
more students. Since the 2010-11 academic year, Nicholls’ tuition increased by 10 percent each year. Last year Nicholls increased tuition for in-state students 13 percent to $3,617 and for out-of-state students 10 percent to $8,740. This year, that increase isn’t necessary, officials said, as lawmakers were able to make up most of a $608 million gap they began the legislative session with. Early projections had Nicholls losing more than $12 million in state money, but the final cut to Nicholls is about $73,000, Murphy said.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — After waiting about as long as possible, the state of Louisiana began selling marriage licenses to samesex couples and agreed Thursday that they could file joint income-tax returns and get both parents’ names on their children’s birth certificates. Although most parish clerks of court had been selling same-sex marriage licenses since last Monday, the state Office of Vital Records, which sells most marriage licenses in New Orleans, didn’t do so until Thursday. That office is part of the state Department of Health and Hospitals. The records office, along with the Department of Revenue, waited until U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman threw out his earlier decision in several consolidated Louisiana cases. Feldman had been among a few federal judges who previously had upheld state laws against gay marriage. Feldman’s order Thursday was largely procedural, since the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled six days earlier that marriage is a fundamental right under the U.S. Constitution. On Wednesday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned his earlier ruling in several consolidated cases. The state health and revenue departments said in news releases emailed Thursday that they are complying. In addition to filing new joint returns, “married same-sex taxpayers may amend prior state returns,” the Department of Revenue noted. Taxpayers in Louisiana can amend state returns within three years of the filing deadline for the original tax return or two years from the tax payment, whichever is later. Married same-sex couples also will be able to get both of their names on their children’s birth certificates, whether the child is adopted or born to one member of the couple, said Kyle Duncan, attorney for the Department of Health and Hospitals. It will continue not doing so for unmarried couples, whether

heterosexual or same-sex, he said. Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration had recommended waiting 25 days after the Supreme Court ruling to act on the Supreme Court’s decision, but most parish clerks of court began doing so Monday, and virtually all had done so by Wednesday. The state holdout didn’t prevent same-sex marriages from being conducted in New Orleans — Louisiana’s first gay marriage was Monday in Orleans Parish Civil District Court after the couple got their license in neighboring Jefferson Parish. “I am so very pleased that Gov. Jindal’s continued attempts at scoring points with Iowa voters were ignored by clerks of court, who continued to comply and implement the Supreme Court ruling this week,” said Chris Otten, chair of the Forum for Equality Louisiana, a plaintiff in the suit. “The clerks, not Gov. Jindal, show the true spirit of Louisiana.” Jindal, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, is currently campaigning in Iowa. In Red River Parish, about the only parish which had was not writing same-sex marriage licenses Thursday morning, Clerk of Court Stuart Shaw said that afternoon, “We are going to abide by the laws of the state and the United States government.” The head of Louisiana State Police said earlier that members of same-sex couples who want their married name on their driver’s licenses can make that change starting Monday. Col. Mike Edmonson said computers had to be reprogrammed to change men’s last names and to check the changes with Social Security records. People changing their names need to bring in their certified marriage license and proof that they’ve changed the name in Social Security records, he said. Those will provide information state police need for the computer check. Replacement four-year licenses cost $13; the new six-year license is $17.

Lockport man arrested for setting house on fire and stabbing dog Wednesday, July 8, 2015 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
A Lockport man was arrested after officers learned he set a house on fire last Wednesday night. Duane Ryan Jr., 24, was arrested following the incident and also faces an animal cruelty charge after he allegedly stabbed a dog. Just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, officers responded to a house fire in the 300 block of Justin Street in Lockport along with firefighters from the Lockport Fire Department and the Vacherie/Gheens Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze, but the residence was a total loss. Through investigation, officers learned Duane Ryan had been living at the residence for the past few months with his girlfriend. Officers learned Ryan had become irate following a verbal altercation with friends. He grabbed two knives from the kitchen and walked outside to confront the men who immediately fled the scene. At some point, Ryan allegedly stabbed the pet dog near the eye with one of the knives, and he allegedly poured gasoline inside the interior of the house. Ryan’s girlfriend took the dog and left the house. Ryan later contacted his girlfriend and threatened to set the home ablaze if she did not return.
A short time later, she learned there was s m o k e c o m i n g from inside her residence and Duane Ryan, Jr. proceeded there to check. Officers arrived at the home shortly after she did and, after learning what had transpired, took Ryan into custody. Ryan was charged with simple arson of an inhabited dwelling and aggravated cruelty to animals. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked accordingly. His bond has not yet been set, but he is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole due to a parole violation. Ryan had just been released from a three-year prison stay in February for charges of burglary and auto theft, and he was placed on parole. Ryan’s criminal history dates back to 2008 when he was arrested for carnal knowledge of a juvenile in the same month he turned 17 years old. He has been arrested 10 other times, all in Lafourche Parish, for charges such as burglary, attempted robbery, theft, assault and battery.
The Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal ruled on Wednesday, July 1st, that the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office is entitled to see certain mental health records of a second degree murder suspect, overturning a prior ruling of the trial court. The court of appeal ruled that test data compiled by Dr. Marc Zimmerman during his evaluation of Traveyon Blackledge must be turned over to the State, so that its own expert witnesses can evaluate the results. Blackledge is one of three co-defendants charged in the September 22, 2013 murders of Nikki Landry and Harry Lefort. The Hon. Jerome J. Barbera, now retired, ruled that under formal rules of discovery, the State was not entitled to the requested materials. The State of
Louisiana filed an application for a writ of review, seeking to have that decision overturned. “We are satisfied that the First Circuit has agreed that we are entitled to these records,” said District Attorney Camille A. Morvant, II. “Our hope is that once this decision becomes final, we can resolve all of the pending pre-trial motions and set a firm jury trial date in the near future.” The next scheduled court date in this matter is August 28, with the matter now assigned to the Hon. Walter I. Lanier, III. In the interim, the defense has the right to seek either a rehearing at the First Circuit or ask the Louisiana Supreme Court to review the decision.
Appeal’s Court rules DA’s office entitled to view mental health records of 2nd degree murderer

Joining her husband Aging Aunt Mildred was a 93-year-old woman who was particularly despondent over the recent death of her husband. She decided that she would just kill herself and join him in death. Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly, she took out his old Army pistol and made the decision to shoot herself in the heart, since it was
badly broken in the first place. Not wanting to miss the vital organ and become a vegetable and a burden to someone, she called her doctor’s office to inquire as to just exactly where the heart would be on a woman. The doctor said, “Your heart would be just below your left breast.” Later that night, Mildred was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her knee.
