Mayor Joey Bouziga addressed the Parish Council about the money Oct. 23 and again Nov. 14. On both occasions, Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said he would look into the matter but added that local government did not have the money available. LPB program to feature Vietnam veterans’ memories in their own words

During the 60s and 70s, thousands of Louisianans served in a war that divided our nation. When it was over, more than 58,000 Americans had died, and nearly 1,000 were from Louisiana. Now 50 years later, Louisiana’s Vietnam War veterans and their families are sharing their memories with Louisiana Public Broadcasting in a powerful new documentary. The Vietnam War: Louisiana Stories features 14 veterans and family members who relay, in their own words, how the war impacted their lives. Premiering Tuesday, November 28 at 7 p.m., the program spotlights some of the 80 plus stories told to LPB in their Baton Rouge studios, around the state, and online. Since July, LPB has recorded oral histories from Vietnam veterans and others affected by the war. These stories are posted online at www.ladigitalmedia.org as part of the state’s Louisiana Digital Media Archive. LPB will continue recording oral histories

through June 2018. Veterans who would like to schedule an interview may do so by calling (225) 767-4204 or (800) 2728162, ext. 4204. Stories can also be shared on LPB’s website at lpb.org/Vietnam. Veterans, families, and friends have also signed LPB’s large-scale movable map of the Vietnam War Theater in honor or memory of military service. The Vietnam War: Louisiana Stories is sponsored by Louisiana Companies, Querbes & Nelson, the Louisiana Forestry Association, the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Foundation for Excellence in Louisiana Public Broadcasting. The program is produced and directed by LPB’s Tika Laudun, and the online editor is Keith Crews. LPB’s activities supporting the broadcast of The Vietnam War were made possible by a grant from WETA in Washington, D.C. The Vietnam War is a production of Florentine Films and WETA, Washington D.C.

TRMC sponsors playground equipment to area schools

Thibodaux Regional Medical Center recently sponsored new playground equipment for Raceland Lower and Upper Elementary Schools as part of its ongoing initiative to improve the health and wellness of the youth in Lafourche and surrounding parishes. According to the Centers for Disease control, Louisiana ranks fourth highest in the U.S. in childhood obesity, which often leads to chronic, preventable conditions in adulthood such as heart disease and diabetes. “As a community health care leader, we are committed to helping improve the health and wellness of the children in our area,” said Greg Stock, Thibodaux Re-

gional CEO. “Exercise and nutrition education can have a very positive impact on the health and wellness of our youth.” Raceland Lower and Upper Elementary School Principals Tina Guidry and Rebecca Johnson expressed their gratitude. “Thank you Thibodaux Regional for sponsoring this playground equipment for our school,” Guidry said. “Our students truly deserve this.” Johnson added, “Thank you to Raceland Upper Fourth Grade Teacher Danielle Benoit for her initiative, time and effort in working with Thibodaux Regional to help make this happen for our students.” “Our students work hard to meet the ever-increasing standards we

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Carnival Cruise Line plans to swap ships between Galveston and New Orleans to increase both ports’ capacity for shortterm cruises starting in 2019. The Miami-based company says the 3,646passenger Carnival Dream will move from New Orleans to Galveston, increasing the Texas port’s capacity for 4- and 5-day cruises by 22 percent. At the same time, the 2,974-passenger Carnival Valor will move from Galveston to New Orleans. The cruise line said in a news release last week that will increase New Orleans’ short-term cruise capacity by 10 percent. Both changes are scheduled in May 2019. ___

US rig count up by 8 this week to 923; Wyoming up 4

HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by eight this week to 923. That’s up from the 593 rigs that were active a year ago. Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes said Wednesday that 747 rigs sought oil and 176 explored for natural gas this week. The weekly tabulation, normally released on

Friday, was distributed early this week because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Among major oiland gas producing states, Wyoming gained four rigs while Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas were up one apiece. Utah declined by one. Alaska, Arkansas, California, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404.

A believer in Christ, he became very active in the ACTS retreats and attended mass regularly. Cantrelle also said there is no cooperative endeavor agreement between the parish and Golden Meadow. But Councilman Corey Perrillioux pointed approval of money to pay a company for the Yankee Canal levee earlier this year as an example of the parish paying for emergency projects after the fact. “I’d love to help, but not at the detriment of my employees,” Cantrelle said. “I have more holes in my budget than Swiss cheese. I can’t give raises to my employees. That was promised by a previous administration. He should have gotten it then. I want to help, but first of all I have to help the workers and people of the parish.”

Medicaid From 1-A

who make up nearly one-third of the state’s population, about half of them children. “If these contracts expire and there is no managed care system in place in February, starting Feb. 1, the entire Medicaid program will be in chaos. There will be services that start getting denied immediately to Medicaid beneficiaries, so we think that clearly meets the requirement established in law,” Block said Tuesday. The emergency contracts require approval from the Office of State Procurement, a contracting office in the Edwards administration. The health department made the formal request Monday. Block notified House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry of the plans in a letter. Henry said the contracts spend “an astonishing amount of money to put in the hands of the governor alone.” “It’s not in the public’s best interest to circumvent Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget approval for a contract of that value,” he said Tuesday. Henry has led GOP opposition to the contracts. He and other Republicans have questioned whether the health department is doing enough to monitor and squeeze savings out of deals that annually account for one-quarter of the state’s operating budget. They point to audits suggesting the agency isn’t properly supervising the managed-care companies and to comments that the health department has too few staff for the oversight. They’ve sought changes, mostly to give the legislative auditor’s office more explicit authority to review managed-care records. Edwards accused House Republicans of being obstructionists, and the administration refused to change the extensions brought before the budget committee. In the emergency contracts, Block said language was added to spell out the legislative

auditor “currently has the authority” to dig into the records. Henry and other lawmakers have said they don’t want to abandon the insurance-based model enacted by Jindal in 2012 and return to the previous system of directly reimbursing doctors and hospitals with a fee paid for each service rendered. They haven’t offered a backup plan if the current contracts expire. The intention wasn’t to let the deals lapse, Henry said. “Our thought process was never to stop the contracts from being signed. The strategy was to make sure we were being prudent with taxpayer dollars,” he said. Block said Louisiana couldn’t revert to the prior model if the managed-care deals lapsed because the health department doesn’t have the needed staff, federal approvals or agreements with health providers. Also, the Medicaid program uses millions from a tax paid by managed-care organizations to draw down additional federal cash. If the contracts aren’t in place, those dollars disappear, and the Medicaid program would run out of money in April in a budget year that runs through June, Block said. ___ Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte

Shoppers From 1-A

Look for a secure checkout. Make sure all online purchases are made on a secure website. To confirm a site is secure, check the URL address and make sure there is an “s” in https://. Then, check the lower-right corner for the “lock” symbol before paying. If there are any doubts about a site, right-click anywhere on the page and select “Properties.” This should show the actual website address, and the dialog box will reveal whether or not the site is encrypted. Pay with a credit card. Purchases made with a credit card provide the most protection. Using a credit card usually allows shoppers to dispute unauthorized charges or charges for items not received. Watch out for lookalike websites. In a scam known as “cybersquatting,” crooks steal or slightly alter the website address of a well-known company to launch a copycat site that looks exactly like the real site. The primary function of these fraudulent websites is to collect your credit card information in order to steal your identity or to sell fake or inferior counterfeit goods. Be wary of too-goodto-be-true contests and

5-A

prize promotions. Consumers should be suspicious of any email, message, or post on social networks promoting giveaways or contests that seem too good to be true – such as free highvalue gift cards, tablets, and smartphones. These “contests” are often scams designed to bilk consumers out of money and/or to collect consumers’ personal information for sale to other scammers. Read the fine print. Broadly worded promotional offers and advertisements often mislead consumers into paying full price for items they believed were on sale. Consumers should carefully examine internet deals by reading any and all fine print in the promotional materials, identifying the exact brand and model number on sale. Keep records. Always print and save records and/or receipts of your transactions. For more consumer tips or to report a scam, please call General Landry’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 800351-4889 or visit www.AGJeffLandry.com.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you have reached a crossroads where everything you have dreamed and worked for has finally converged. This is the time to enjoy the fruits of all your labor. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, rather than looking at the differences between you and someone else, look at the similarities. This is a great way to begin a friendship.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd No matter what age we are, we have to be ready to meet our Loving God

A couple weeks ago our nation experienced another dreadful mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The gunman killed 26 people and wounded 20 others after he opened fire during the Sunday service. The shooter started firing shortly after the service began at 11:00 a.m. He was armed with a military-style rifle, and within minutes, many of those inside the small church were either dead or wounded. The victims ranged in age from one to 77, and among the dead were several children, a pregnant woman and the pastor’s 14-year-old daughter, Annabelle. It was the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s

history. Many families lost multiple members. When you look at the list of those who died, it’s a cross section of that small community. There was a 5-yearold, a 7-year-old, an 11-year-old, a 13-yearold, a 16-year-old, plus people in their 30’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. They were at church to pray to God, listen to God’s word and worship God in spirit and truth. They were probably all prepared to meet their loving God although that’s not the reason they went to church. If they went to church for genuine spiritual reasons and got into the church service, I’m sure God was pleased with their worship. They were ready to meet their Maker. Jesus told us a parable about the wise and foolish bridesmaids. He said, “Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.” All ten were present, their dresses gorgeous and their lamps glowing. They waited for the bridegroom together, but when he was delayed, they became drowsy and slept. All ten behaved in

and enriches all those who possess her. Spiritual Wisdom requires a preparedness that we see in deeds of

love and mercy. These deeds are done in obedience to Jesus’ command to feed the hungry, welcome strangers, clothe

the naked, care for the sick and visit the imprisoned. Ask God for the gift of Wisdom.

the same way, which lets us know that Spiritual Wisdom cannot be judged by outward appearances. Jesus then says, “Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.” Half had high Spiritual Wisdom; five had low. It is not their presence that makes the difference, nor their enthusiasm, nor even their watchfulness – Jesus tells us that all became drowsy and slept. No, the difference is in their readiness. At midnight they heard a shout: “Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!” The bridesmaids all popped up and jumpstarted their lamps. The foolish bridesmaids, who had forgotten to bring flasks of oil with them, ran low and had to ask the wise bridesmaids for a refill. When the spiritually wise women expressed their regrets about sharing, the foolish attendants had to make a run to an all-night oil dealer. By the time they finished their errand, the door to the wedding feast was shut and locked tight, and when they begged to be admitted, the bridegroom answered, “Truly, I do not know you.” All were prepared for the celebration. Only half were ready for the waiting. The parable stresses the need to be patient during the waiting. According to Jesus, the mark of Spiritual Wisdom is readiness: readiness in the face of long waits; readiness when life tests our patience; readiness when we are worn out and tired and unable to keep our eyes open; readiness when pain threatens to overwhelm us, when grief makes us feel as if we are drowning, when boredom dulls our senses; readiness when Christ seems distant and when his return seems delayed. The sign of spiritual wisdom is to be prepared for tough times and ready for rough roads ahead. Yet, the gift of wisdom makes life bright
