BATON ROUGE—Even after a public expression W of distress by a state legislator, Gov. John Bel Edwards decided Wednesday to leave a Louisiana National Guard support team at the Texas border until mid-July. “I, like many people, am deeply disturbed by the unnecessary and abhorrent policy of separating children from their families,” Edwards said. But Edwards added that the Louisiana team, which responded in May to a routine request to assist Texas with border security, would finish its job. Louisiana sent assets along with eight other states. Edwards issued his statement after disturbing images emerged out of southern Texas. President Trump said Wednesday that he See Governor Page 3-A

Another vehicle misjudges the confusing highway intersection Tuesday evening at LA 1 in Larose near the Ted Gisclair Floodgate and where the old Larose pontoon bridge once stood. It’s not the first time a vehicle just continues straight on the roadway instead of making the sharp left turn that continues along LA 1. It’s confusing, especially for people traveling from out of Photos by Babs town.
Commission seeking support for Leeville community
Norby Chabert which created it for promoting tourism and conservation efforts in Leeville. But since that time, its immediate goals, namely holding quarterly meetings, creating a seal or “brand”, or even preparing a budget have mostly been unfulfilled. The board’s members have struggled with how to seek money, either from public or private sources — until its latest meeting. On Monday, June 18, Chairman Don Griffin presented to other board members an updated draft of a proposed tourist brochure which, in addition to displaying a map of Leeville, will include a short history of Leeville, fishing tips, pictures of the public boat launch site and a list of local merchants and their locations. The Commission hopes the brochure will create more interest in Leeville as a fishing destination. Without a budget, the Commission will seek to use ad space on the brochure to help defray the printing cost.

Grand Isle State Park: The top mom-approved place to fish and boat in Louisiana
In a list made for moms, by moms and facilitated by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, (RBFF), Grand Isle State Park has officially been named a top, mom-approved place to fish and boat in Louisiana. Thanks to its fish-filled waters and family-friendly amenities, Grand Isle State Park officially has the mom-approved seal of approval. RBFF searched for places that have everything a family needs to experience the great outdoors – play areas and family-friendly amenities, picnic areas, safe water and boat access and of course, plenty of fish to catch including redfish, spotted seatrout and southern flounder. A nationwide survey of thousands of
moms revealed the list of top mom-approved places to fish and boat, which includes a comprehensive list of family-friendly fishing holes in all 50 states, which can be found at www.takemefishing.org . See Grand Isle Page 3-A

Supreme Court ruling that paves the way for states to collect more sales taxes from online purchases has upended shaky tax negotiations among lawmakers in the Louisiana House. Louisiana has laws aimed at being able to take in taxes from online shoppers and already collects some sales taxes from retailers like Amazon. Lawmakers hoped the high court decision Thursday could help the state broaden those collections and eventually mean more money for the state treasury. But the Supreme Court decision simply added more confusion to already uncertain discussions. It’s unclear how long it could take for such sales tax collections to begin, or how much money the treasury could collect. Disagreement also emerged about whether Louisiana has several key provisions on the books to match the requirements involved in the Supreme Court ruling for online sales tax collection. “It’s not going to result in immediate income to the state,” said Republican Rep. Jay Morris, a Monroe lawyer. Still, the ruling was a central topic of discussion Thursday in the House, where lawmakers in a special session are haggling over sales tax measures aimed at lessening steep budget cuts that hit in July. One tax bill failed in an evening vote, while a second bill was pulled from consideration. Republicans already reticent to support taxes circulated news of the ruling — and talked about the possible income it could generate — as a reason to vote for a lower-dollar sales tax proposal or to vote against taxes entirely. LETTERS AND OPINIONS
The Community organizers are at it again By: Attorney General Jeff Landry
Just when I thought political hypocrisy could not hit a lower point, Eric Holder came along to prove me wrong. Last week, Holder and his National Democratic Redistricting Committee filed a federal lawsuit accusing Louisiana of using gerrymandering to dilute the strength of black voters. This leftist political organization backed by former President Barack Obama argued our State should have concocted a way to create another majority-black Congressional district. In the most ironic twist of fate, Holder and his liberal cronies ignored the fact that Louisiana’s Congressional district map was approved by the United States Department of Justice led then by Holder and Tom Perez – the current Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Yes, that is correct: Holder and Perez found the plan approved by our Legislature to be completely lawful under the Voting Rights Act. Now these liberal crusaders are suing our State to prevent use of the very map they previously cleared. Instead of winning elections at the ballot boxes, the Left is attempting to use litigation as their means to victory. Since they are unable to win on ideas and policies, they have resorted to legal claims that Louisiana dilutes the votes of our black citizens. For eight years, the Obama-Holder-Perez Administration unlawfully used their authority to take over police departments, proliferate sanctuary cities, and encourage men to use girls’ bathrooms in public schools. Now that they are out of power in government, this merry band of community-organizers is abusing our judicial system to advance their radical agenda. Their junk lawsuit – seeking to enjoin Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia – represents nothing more than political hypocrisy. It invokes the use of discrimination during Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and even David Duke’s 1991 gubernatorial campaign; yet it fails to provide any clear evidence of current

While liberal groups will surely use this lawsuit to gin up racial animosity and fill their coffers, our State has to unfortunately use our precious tax dollars to defeat it. Border pain and our children By Glenn Mollette
Lots of outrage has been seen and heard around America over the treatment of families illegally entering the United States. President Trump has signed an executive order to keep the families together. I’m not sure where Americans want to keep these families who took a great risk to enter our country hoping to gain entrance quickly and illegally. It did not work out for them. I know quite a few people who live in our country who have moved here from Mexico, Myanmar and other parts of the world. They are working very hard and are very supportive of the laws of America. Breaking the law always has some penalty or repercussions. I’m all for keeping border families together. I would never want to see children ripped away from a

mother or father. Those crossing the border for the most part are very desperate people in search of a better place. Every day people fill out the necessary paper work, go through the proper channels and enter our country. Millions of them are now working a job that many Americans no longer want to work which is very sad for our country. However, it’s good for those who want to work it seems. What do we do with these border families now? Do we keep them in full service hotels or house them at a resort property in Disney World? They have left third world countries where conditions apparently were not very good. How much can we be expected to do for people showing up demanding entrance to America? What would you do for people showing up at your front door demanding lodging and meals and even health care? It’s hard for most people when family shows up unannounced. I found it interesting watching the outcry of demonstrators and different media personalities. I have wondered where are the daily cries over how America treats our children and unborn children? Right now while I am writing this there will be about 3000 legalized abortions in America. Add that number times 365 days in our country. There were 652,639 legalized abortions in 2014 according to the Center for Disease Control. Seven thousand children are abandoned
each year in the United States. China is said to have over twenty million orphans. How many babies and children spend their first five years in daycare and then are raised essentially by the school? It’s a tough day for America’s families who are trying to financially survive. However, money, things and attainments never take the place of time with children and families. It’s easy to see this looking back. I’m glad there are Americans who have verbalized their pain concerning the importance of children and parents being together. It’s important. Maybe there will be some outrage down the road on the state of America’s families who enjoy the privileges daily afforded to our families but for different reasons don’t treat their children very well.

Tax Talks From 1-A
Lafayette Republican Rep. Stuart Bishop pulled his sales tax proposal from consideration permanently, saying he couldn’t reach the twothirds vote for passage. He said the court ruling made reaching the vote count harder. “That changed some minds today,” Bishop said. Later in the day, the House rejected a second sales tax bill, which fell 10 votes short of the 70 needed. Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras declared his chamber was at “an extreme deadlock,” and he urged continued talks as the House left for the night. “What we need is movement from the two corners,” Barras said. “No one has budged in the last three days.” Lawmakers returned Friday. Morris noted the online sales tax case has to go back to a South Dakota court for more decisions before it could affect sales tax collections in any state, including Louisiana. Scott Drenkard, with the conservative, nonpartisan Tax Foundation, said Louisiana’s laws don’t dovetail with the court ruling. “For Louisiana, this is something that lawmakers should be looking at in the long term, but this does not help you in this special session at all, sorry,” Drenkard said. Republican Rep. Nancy Landry, a lawyer from Lafayette, disagreed, telling her colleagues: “I think we’re going to see revenue right away.” Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson said she will move ahead with efforts to start collecting the online sales tax, though she didn’t have a timeline for enforcement and she acknowledged retailers could sue and “drag this out.” It’s the third special session this year, called by Gov. John Bel Edwards in the hopes of renewing some expiring sales taxes to fill state coffers and avoid deep reductions across college campuses and state programs only days away. Two prior special sessions failed to broker a tax deal. This special session, which must end Wednesday, June 27, centers on whether part of a 1 percent sales tax should be continued next month, when the state’s sales tax rate is scheduled to drop from 5 percent to 4 percent. Competing proposals involving renewing 0.4 percent or 0.5 percent of the tax, the equivalent of 10 cents in sales tax charged for every $100 purchase. Edwards and House Democrats want to renew half the 1 percent tax, a proposal previously backed by the Senate. House Republican leaders have fallen behind the 0.4 percent renewal rate. A bill containing the 0.5 percent rate failed in a 60-40 vote, with GOP leaders and most Republicans in the chamber opposed. The 0.5 percent renewal rate would raise
the $506 million needed to fully finance the upcoming budget. The 0.4 percent would raise more than $420 million. ___ Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte

Roussell and Guidroz were determined to be the primary suspects in both investigations. It was believed they had stolen the gun during the ride to the store and stole merchandise at the store upon arrival. Also on Monday, deputies responded to a residential burglary on Jason Street in Larose. Deputies learned Roussell had arrived at the residence that morning asking to perform work for cash but was denied. A woman left the residence and returned later in the day to find it had been burglarized. She contacted two family members to assist her at the residence. As the three were traveling in a car, they encountered Roussell walking along the road, and noticed a bag stolen during the burglary in the vicinity. They confronted Roussell about the burglary, but he denied involvement. The woman retrieved the bag stolen from her residence which contained items stolen during the burglary. At that time, Roussell brandished a handgun and pointed it at each of the three individuals, threatening them. The woman returned home after the incident to contact the sheriff’s office. Shortly after 4 a.m., deputies located Roussell at a family member’s residence, and Guidroz was present also. After deputies questioned them about the stolen firearm, they were both placed under arrest and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center for booking. Roussell was charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of Domestic Abuse Battery, Simple Burglary of an Inhabited Dwelling and Shoplifting. His bond is set at $98,000. Guidroz was booked on charges of Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Shoplifting. She was also booked on a warrant for a parole violation in Texas. Her bond on the local charges is set at $40,000, but she is being held without bond due to the parole violation warrant.

would reverse part of his zero-tolerance policy for people illegally crossing the border and having their families separated. During a House committee meeting Wednesday, Rep. Gary Carter, D-New Orleans, asked Louisiana National Guard Adjutant Gen. Glenn Curtis if he had any personnel at the southern U.S. border. Gen. Curtis said Louisiana has one heli-
copter and three soldiers at the border to assist with security. Curtis added that these assets are not in any way involved in enforcing the policy of separating children from their parents. Carter was still disturbed by Louisiana providing any form of ancillary support for this policy and urged the Guard to recall the assets immediately. But the governor delayed removal of these assets until the end of their mission in July. In closing, Edwards said, “I urge Congress and the President to act quickly to end this crisis.”

“We need to get the ball rolling. We need to generate funds for this commission,” said Commissioner Kip Plaisance. Griffin vowed to begin the process of hitting all the 19 businesses and half-dozen charter fishermen in Leeville, seeking advertisement. “Once we get this down, we’ll have something to hang our hats on, something to show the other people in Leeville,” he said. District 9 Parish Councilman Daniel Lorraine suggested that Griffin, or other board representatives, attend a Tourist Commission or Greater Lafourche Port Commission meeting to seek funds. In the meantime, he said: “I will try to consult with the parish’s grant writer for his input. I will try to put some money in next year’s parish budget.” It was also noted by Plaisance that Tourist Commission Chairman Timothy Bush offered funding at a 2017 Leeville Commission meeting, but that offer needs to be pursued more aggressively, he said. Commissioner Bob Gourges noted the positives which the Commission has helped to generate. “We had a rocky start, but a lot of good has happened for Leeville. We have a $2 million dollar boat launch. If you would total the people who park at Boudreaux’s Motel and then go and count the trucks and trailers at the public launch, you’ve got more people coming into Leeville than you ever had,” said Gourges. Hopefully, the printing of a Commissionsponsored brochure will spur even greater numbers of visitors to Leeville.

Alabama, Mississippi refuse money for Amtrak resumption
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Plans to resume passenger train service on the northern Gulf Coast suffered a setback with Alabama and Mississippi refusing money for the
project. Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi had to pledge almost $35 million total over three years by Thursday to be eligible for the same amount in federal funds that would enable Amtrak trains to run from New Orleans eastward to Mobile, Alabama. But Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey refused, and a leader with the Southern Rail Commission says Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant never responded to the request. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards had committed to spend as much as $8 million on the project, saying it would provide “tremendous benefits” to the region. Amtrak suspended service east of New Orleans after Katrina caused heavy damage in 2006.

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Watching and reflecting on an old movie can raise life’s deep questions
I recently watched the movie “Rebel Without a Cause” starring James Dean and Natalie Wood. The movie hit the screens in 1955, that’s 63 years ago. I think I saw it twice when it originally came out but that was decades ago. The only thing I remember well from “way back when” were the two violent scenes. Jim Stark (James Dean) and the gang leader were playing “chicken.” They were to ride toward a cliff in old cars and the one who got out first was “chicken.” The gang leader’s coat got caught on the door that prevented him from opening his door. He ended up at the bottom of the cliff dead. The other violent scene was at the end of the movie when Plato (Sal Mineo) was exiting the building where he was hiding and was shot by the police. The thing that impressed me was I only remembered those violent scenes. That stayed in my memory while the other parts of the movie were very vague. This made me wonder about the power that violent scenes have on our psychological makeup. These scenes were in no way equal to the violence we see on our televisions, movie screens, and video games today. No one was blown up. One reason we have so much violence in our society is that it’s all around us. Even our evening news features violence. The movie is about dysfunctional families, bullying, loneliness, and the good and harmful effect we have on each other. It’s also about hope. We can all change. We can all learn to love and care for others. Sounds familiar? It’s about life today. The same issues … a different time. Jim Stark’s family is well off, but his parents and his maternal grandmother are constantly fighting with each other. The family bickering has a tremendous effect on Jim. He says, “You’re tearing me apart! You say one thing, he says another, and everybody changes back again.” At one point in the film Jim asks his emasculated father, Frank Stark, “What can you do when you have to be a man?” His father doesn’t know. Earlier Jim tells the officer, “She eats him alive, and he takes it.” Like Hamlet, Jim feels a pointless choice between being and not being. Jim has a hard time making friends and his parents keep moving from city to city. The first time Jim talks with Judy (Natalie Wood), the girl next door, she’s ready for him. He says, “You live here, don’t you?” She answers, “Who lives?” These are lost people going nowhere. The other major character in the movie is short, lonely, angry and persecuted Plato (Sal Mineo). His parents are divorced and his mother is never home. A motherly black housekeeper is raising him. He wants to be friends with Jim, but Jim is primarily interested in Judy. In a dinner scene,
Judy gives her father (William Hopper) a peck on the cheek, and he reacts with embarrassment, “What’s the matter with you? You’re getting too old for that kind of stuff.” Judy responds: “Girls don’t love their father? Since when? Since I got to be 16?” Her father is probably afraid of his sexual feelings toward his daughter. Another failed father. The movie ends when Jim, Judy and Plato hid out in a deserted mansion near the observatory. In a tender
scene, Plato goes to sleep at the feet of Jim and Judy, while she hums Brahms’ “Lullaby” and Jim observes that they are like a family. It feels good. Jim and Judy also acknowledge their love for each other. Love and caring can change people. When Plato wakes us, he thinks his friends have abandoned him. Jim tries to calm Plato but his fears take over and he is eventually shot by the police. However, the power of love has changed everyone. Christ’s love can change us too.

Picture from the past … Pictured are players who participated in the first football game played in the south Lafourche area in September of 1948, between Golden Meadow High School (GMHS) and Cut Off High School. One can see the camaraderie amongst the players from the two rival schools. Standing top row, left to right, Billie Bob Collins, Easton Pitre, Eris Bouzigard, Jasper Plaisance, and Linton Doucet. Pictured in the middle are Lurrey Terrebonne, Jerry Galliano, Loy Duet and Leroy Lefort. Pictured at the bottom is Lionel Terrebonne. Not shown is Leroy “Blackie” Chabert. At the end of the ’48 season, GMHS was crowned district champs with a 7-1 record. The team played an undefeated Buras High School team in a bi-district contest sponsored by the Larose VFW, in the first-ever Oyster Bowl held at the Larose Park. Golden Meadow lost that contest to Buras, 31-6.
