Firefighters battled a boat fire in Lafourche Parish this afternoon, authorities said. About 1:39 p.m. Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 responded to a vessel fire in the Port Fourchon area in Lafourche Parish, fire officials said. Fire crews arrived on the scene to find smoke billowing out of the engine room in a 280-foot vessel, authorities said. Firefighters contacted the boat’s captain, who called a fire team into the area to deploy water mist and secure doors to the surrounding areas. Firefighters stretched a hose into the engine room to extinguish the blaze, fire officials said. Fire crews remained on the scene for a few hours to ventilate toxic gases and smoke and ensure no hot spots remained on the vessel. The cause of the fire was engine failure, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

Easter … Think about it By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist

Easter is an exciting day for Christians around the world. Churches around the globe look forward to celebrating the resurrection of Christ. Clergy persons look forward to a one day larger attendance. Church choirs and music programs try to shine brighter and give their best effort. For one day the light and victory of new life and victory over death rings bright in a world filled with so much gloom and death. Merchants will sell some clothes as some people still buy new outfits for Easter. Some people are like me in that I got over worrying about what clothes I wear to church a long time ago. I still dress up sometimes of course but I don’t mind wearing an old suit. Attitudes are changing toward Easter in America. Many church crowds have dwindled and Easter doesn’t seem to resurrect some of the religious dead anymore. There was a day when people who never attended church all year would rise up and go. Today, that’s happening less. I actually have heard regular church attenders say they aren’t going on Easter Sunday. “Too many people and not enough seats or parking,” I have heard recently. Regardless of what you do on Easter please take a moment and think about life and death. Death is real. We are all going to die. The cemetery is a lonely

place. The only hope I know of dealing with death and the cemetery is the story of Easter. Easter is about Jesus who was crucified for the sins of the world. The Bible says he arose from the grave and was seen by more than five hundred people. His disciples were beat down and had given up all hope after his crucifixion. When they saw Jesus they were totally transformed from men who were emotionally devastated to men who were filled with hope, vigor and power. They literally hid and ran for their lives when Jesus was arrested and crucified. After they had spent time with the risen Jesus they were willing to face anything and literally die for him. These men were filled with new hope and victory. Don’t we all need this today? Surely every person on the planet needs hope and victory.

We need it for daily living. We need it as we face the hour of death. We all can use some newness of life to just face today. Thomas is known for being a big doubter but he changed his mind when he literally touched the risen Jesus. In the Bible story he exclaimed, “My Lord and my God,” John 20:28. We don’t have that privilege of being convinced like Thomas. However, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Once again Easter rolls around on the Calendar. Think about it. Think about all of it. Think about life, death, eternity, heaven, hell and the cemetery. Think about all that stuff. It can be morbid. The point of Easter is victory and celebration and more. I choose the point of Easter and if by chance it’s all a hoax what do I have to lose? If it’s all true I certainly have a great deal to gain. him at Contact GMollette@aol.com. Learn more at www.glennmollette.com

Raise From 1-A

House sent the proposed school funding formula back to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on Tuesday. BESE is the administrative body charged with creating policy and regulations for operating schools. Currently, the Louisiana’s House of Representatives has a $1,000 raise for teachers and $500 raise for support staff included in its budget as a special appropriation to schools. The special appropriation would come from outside the formula set by BESE to guide state aid for schools. The formula is called the minimum foundation program, or MFP. BESE’s proposed formula was unanimously approved and included continued money for the raises in the form of a 1.375-percent increase in state aid to school districts on a per pupil basis. The House returned the proposal with a recommendation to remove that increase. Meaux said there’s no guarantee for future money if the raise isn’t included in that formula. The House would have to vote to include the money each budget season. “It has put everything at risk,” said Meaux. “We want the increases to be permanent and not just something that we get as a one-time stipend.” Should the state remove the special appropriation in a future budget, Meaux said the responsibility would fall onto the school districts to find the local revenue to maintain the raise. “Many of our school districts can’t make up the difference in what doesn’t come from the states,” she said. pointed to She parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche, stating they don’t have the tax base to generate the revenue necessary to pay the raise on their own. With the parish’s depressed economy, Voiron said Lafourche’s school district wouldn’t have another source for the money. “Right now, it needs to come from the state level. We’ve had some struggles the last couple of years with local revenues,” he said. Voiron and Martin

supported the 1.375percent increase in the MFP for school districts but understood that the state’s financial considerations. “I understand there are concerns about revenue estimating and sustainability,” said Voiron. “But if the numbers indicate that the revenue will be there and it will be sustainable in the future then I think it should be included.” BESE President Gary Jones said it wasn’t unusual for the House to return the board’s proposal. “We go through this dance every year,” said Jones. “We think we sent over a good formula in the first place.” BESE board member Sandy Holloway, whose district includes Terrebonne and echoed Lafourche, Jones, stating the proposal’s return was just a part of the process. “I believe strongly that teachers and support staff in our schools should receive more pay for the important work they do,” said Holloway. “A funding increase is needed for our local school districts to meet ever-increasing budget requirements.” She said she felt the board’s proposal addressed those needs. Jones and Holloway said BESE will schedule a special meeting in the next few weeks to determine if any action will be taken on the House’s recommendations. Jones said it will give board members the chance to speak with their constituents before reconvening. When a decision is made, the formula will start the review process again, starting in the House education committee. A decision on adopting a proposed formula will have to be made by the end of the legislative session on June 6.

Proposition 4 is a 10-year, 2 mill property tax for providing additional support to public elementary and secondary schools in the District, in particular to pay the District’s unfunded obligations for the retired employees of the school system. This proposition has been renewed one time to date. Yearly revenue estimate is approximately $1.9 million. The tax will begin in 2022 and would remain in effect until 2031. “We are very proud to be the 3rd highest ranked academic school district in the State of Louisiana and attribute this success to the outstanding staff members in all capacities of our district,” said School Superintendent Dr. Louis Voiron at a recent Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce event. “Together, we can all make a difference to improve the lives of children, and in turn, create a bright future for our parish as a whole.” Some voters in the town of Lockport will also decide on a special tax of 5.24 mills for Fire Protection District No. 2, for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, maintaining and/or operating fire protection facilities, fire trucks and fire fighting equipment for the District. Yearly estimated revenue from the tax is approximately $367,000, beginning in 2021 and ending in 2030. Lafourche is one of 25 parishes statewide with an election on May 4. Terrebonne Parish has no election on this day. The next statewide election, the Gubernatorial Primary Election, is set for October 12. To view your ballot, visit www.geauxvote. com.

Scalise

From 1-A

Representing Shell, Joni Tuck said the company takes the royalty rates into consideration when deciding where to invest. She said that’s part of why Brazil is so attractive to the company. The legislators asked for Tuck and Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association board member Lori LeBlanc to send them data comparing the United States’ rate to others in the world. LeBlanc had asked the representatives to look into royalty rate reform. “Do it in a way where you can bring those multi-billion dollar investments in the U.S. versus going to other countries,” she said. Several SCIA members called for the legislators to continue working toward deregulating the bank and oil industries. Scalise noted that when they were talking about deregulation, he was looking at the regulation that was designed

not to improve the industry but to inhibit drilling. “Regulations can actually be counterintuitive to what they’re supposed to do and that is to create a fair and safe environment for everybody,” he said. Organization representatives also stressed the ties between the oil industry and coastal restoration and tried to explain the close relationship. Deputy Port Director Davie Breaux said the service port exemplifies the effect of both public and private investment to maintain infrastructure and build the land for it. He said the relationship isn’t normal. “But that’s what makes us unique,” said Breaux. Port Commission Board President Chuckie Cheramie, whose family has been in the industries since the 1940s, said the commission works hard to create new land to help the state. Scalise said he was pushing for the expansion of GOMESA – the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act – to include any state interested in allowing offshore drilling, like Virginia. He said the federal government needs to use the revenue-sharing incentives in the act to encourage states to produce energy. All of the House members present stressed their commitment to keeping the country “energy independent.” In his own introduction, Kustoff noted that the energy industry was bound to be an important topic in the 2020 presidential campaign, predicting it will be “front and center.”

“Your livelihood is going to be part of the debate,” he said. “We’re on your side.” Throughout the roundtable, jokes were made about the Green New Deal – the controversial resolution on cutting carbon emissions pushed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. Marine Offshore Services Association representative Aaron Smith said the country will need the oil and gas industries to start using more renewable energy. “There is no green without black,” said Smith. “Everything it will take to build up that infrastructure comes from down here in Louisiana.”

He identified himself as the owner of the truck, and told deputies the truck was in the process of getting repossessed due to him being unable to make payments. He admitted to driving the truck into the canal in an attempt to defraud the insurance company. He told deputies he had returned to the truck to retrieve some personal property he had left inside. Delaune was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex. He was charged with Attempted Insurance Fraud. He was released on Monday evening after posting $20,000 bail.

OBITUARIES

LINDA D. GUIDRY

On Monday, April 15, 2019, Linda D. Guidry, 73, entered into her eternal home, the Kingdom of Heaven. As a life-long educator and retired principal, it was only fitting that she passed away at exactly 3:30 p.m., a time signaling that the school day was done. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Roy Guidry, and daughter Laurie Laine Coleman (Mike) and grandson Charlie, daughter Kristine Collins (Drew) and grandchildren Kanaan and Dru. She is also survived by her step-son Keith Guidry (Paula) and granddaughters Rachel and Ashley, step-daughter Lillie Toups and step-grandchildren Roxie and Lee, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Linda served as an inspiration and example to a plethora of people as her life was a testament to the goodness and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even though she faced much adversity in life and her health was problematic for many years, she showed tremendous fortitude and will; she worked hard to be an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, mentor, and educator. She has always credited these abilities to her unwavering faith. As an educator, she showed compassion and care to thousands of children over the years. This faith can be summed up in the following scripture: Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path. While she will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, we can take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is experiencing unbridled joy as she undoubtedly adds a little more excitement to Heaven. A private graveside burial will be held at a later date for immediate family. In lieu of flowers or donations, please continue Linda’s legacy of care and compassion by showing those qualities to others in need: donate money to children’s lunch accounts who may not have enough to pay for meals, donate books and school supplies to ease financial burdens, give food to the needy, hope to the weary, and pray for the salvation of all.

GARY “GANU CHERAMIE

Gary “Ganu J. Cheramie, a native and resident of Pointe Au Saucisse, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, age 53. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 22nd at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Golden Meadow, from 9 a.m. until service time. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at a later date. Ganu is survived by his brothers, Noel, Alton Sr., Ray and Larry Cheramie; sisters, Peggy Bowie, Mary Turner and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Eula Mae LaBiche Cheramie and brothers, Dudley, Ricky and Perry Cheramie Sr. Samart-Mothe Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Donations for burned black churches up after Notre Dame fire

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A crowdfunding campaign for three African American churches in Louisiana recently gutted by arson was climbing after social media posts urging the public not to forget the plight of the small houses of worship as the eyes of the world were on the fireravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Suspect Holden Matthews, 21, is in custody in connection with the Louisiana fires and faces charges that include hate crimes. The fires happened in and around Opelousas beginning in late March. Matthews was arrested a week ago. The campaign hit $500,000 Tuesday evening, with contributions ranging from $5 to thousands of dollars. The money raised is to be distributed equally among the three century-old churches: St. Mary Baptist Church, which burned on March 26 in Port Barre, a town just outside of Opelousas; and Greater Union Baptist Church and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Opelousas, which burned over the following 10 days. ___

The state’s trucking industry backed the proposal. Supporters said the signs can be distractions for truckers and other motorists, causing accidents. But the proposal faced heavy opposition from Baton Rouge-based Lamar Advertising Company, one of the nation’s largest outdoor advertising firms. The company called the measure “anti-business, suggesting it was being wedged into a fight between the trucking industry and trial lawyers over anti-trucker advertising. Similar legislation is pending in the Senate, though it’s unclear if Tuesday’s vote will stall that measure. House Concurrent Resolution 4: www.legis.la.gov

Former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco enters hospice care

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana officials are calling for prayers for former Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who has entered hospice care for incurable cancer. The 76-year-old Democrat served from 2004 to 2008 as Louisiana’s first and only female governor. Blanco’s time in office included the devastating hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She was diagnosed and treated for a rare eye cancer in 2011. It returned and spread to her liver in 2017.

Billboard restrictions refused by Louisiana House committee

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lawmakers have rejected efforts to restrict new highway billboards in Louisiana. The House transportation committee voted 14-3 Tuesday against the measure after a three-hour hearing. Rep. What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd When we pray, we talk to God; When we read the Bible, God talks to us.

St. Isidore (c. 560636), the Archbishop of Seville in Spain, once said, “Prayer purifies us, reading instructs us. Both are good when both are possible. If we want to be always in God’s company, we must pray regularly and read regularly. When we pray, we talk to God; when we read, God talks to us. All spiritual growth comes from reading and reflection.” In his 2010 encyclical, “The Word of the Lord,” Pope Benedict XVI advocated this specific approach to Scripture as a key to our personal holiness. He recommended what St. Isidore advocated for spiritual growth: “Divine Reading,” in Latin “Lectio Divina.” This prayer method has been part of the Benediction tradition for centuries. There are five basic steps, in which we answer four questions, and then resolve to act upon those answers. Step 1: The Reading. Start with a reading from Scripture and become familiar with the text. Have a desire to understand its true content. What does the biblical text say? Read it several times and pay attention to what words or phrases touch your heart. Step 2: The Meditation. What does the biblical text say to us? Here, each person, individually but also as a member of the community, must let himself or herself be moved and challenged. The word of God is not an ancient text to be read simply for its historical importance. It is a living and active way that our God reveals himself to us and guides us.

Golden Meadow Lions Club sponsoring new hearing aid program

The Golden Meadow Lions Club is sponsoring a new program to provide financial assistance for the purchase of hearing aids for those individuals with limited financial resources. Applicants will be evaluated on financial need. Obtain more information and applications by contacting Lion Pat France at 985-2581544, Lion Ray C. Bernard at 985-6322312, or Lion Henry Lafont, Jr. at 985-693-3308, or any Golden Meadow Lions Club member.

He is still speaking to you and to me today. Are we taking the trouble to listen to what he has to say? Step 3: Pray. What do we say to the Lord in response to his word? Talk to God; talk with God about everything. Prayer, as petition, intercession, thanksgiving and praise, is the primary way by which the word transforms us. The word of God requires a response that begins with prayer. St. Augustine echoes St. Isidore’s idea of prayer, “Your prayer is the word you speak to God. When you read the Bible, God speaks to you; when you pray, you speak to God.” Step 4: Contemplation. Our prayer concludes with contemplation in which we sit still and ask God to show us his own way of seeing and judging re-

ality. We ask ourselves what conversion of mind, heart and life is the Lord asking of us? We sit in silence and allow God to show us his will. St. Paul tells us: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2). Contemplation aims at creating within us a truly wise and discerning vision of reality, as God sees it, and at forming within us “the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16). The word of God is “living and active, sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).

Step 5: Action. We should remember that the process of Divine Reading should move us into action. Knowing God’s will, we should become a light to our world on how to love others. Once we know what God is calling us to do, the next step is simple: do it. Conclusion. If all Christians would undertake the prayerful reading of Scripture, our wounds of the separation would begin to heal. For the Christian, a faith-filled understanding of Sacred Scripture will always lead us to worship where we celebrate the word of God as a timely and living word. In our worship, God speaks to us and directs our everyday lives. God’s people listen attentively and respond. Our worship of God is by its very nature steeped in Sacred Scripture.
