Qualifying begins Wednesday for Nov. 6 election
Qualifying for the November 6 primary election will be held this week, beginning on W Wednesday, July 18 and running through Friday, July 20. All local candidates will sign up at the parish clerk of court’s office. Several local and state offices will be on the ballot this year, including U.S. Congress, secretary of state, public service commission, parish school boards, and in the Tenth Ward, seats on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission board. In both Terrebonne and Lafourche, voters will also decide on separate propositions to allow fantasy sports contests in their respective parishes. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board will oversee the activity in the parishes that approve it. The Lafourche School Board has once again failed to get support for a ballot measure that would reduce its size from 15 to nine members. The board voted 7-7 Wednesday night on whether to present the issue to voters. Here’s how members voted: For: Ray Bernard, Mary Breaud, Dennis Chiasson, Marian Fertitta, Brooke Huddleston, Gregg Stall and Raymond Toups. Against: Al Archer, Richmond Boyd, Julie Breaux, Calvin Duet, Clyde Duplantis, Gary Foret and Ann Sanamo. A bill on the size reduction was also proposed in the Legislature by state Sen. Norby Chabert, R-Houma, but it was deferred by the Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee in mid-April and wasn’t revived. Chabert says most of the push-
back he heard was from current School Board members. Donald Johnson, who is waiting on state approval to represent the District 1 School Board seat after the death of Louis Thibodaux, couldn’t vote on the measure. Johnson said he was disappointed by the decision not to postpone the item until he can vote and called that a sign of disrespect. “I’m the new kid on the block,” said Johnson. “A request was made by the president to table this until I get my full approval from the state so my district can be fully represented. You have a whole district that’s not even going to be represented now. Yes we do represent different districts, but as a board we represent every teacher, parent and student in Lafourche Parish. This means that the parents and teachers of District 1 won’t have any representation on this matter.” See School Page 3-A

I am a member of the Lady of the Sea General Hospital Board of Commissioners, and I previously served on the Housing Authority of Lafourche Parish Board from 1996 to 2010. I have held many leadership positions on the local, regional and statewide levels in the Knights of Columbus and have been an active member since 1985. I am a Past President of the Rotary Club of Golden Meadow, and have been a member since 1993. I serve my church as the Chairman of the Building Committee, as a member of the Finance Committee, and by assisting at church services. I also serve on the boards of several other charitable service organizations. I was appointed as the interim commissioner for Seat E on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission for four months last year after the death of Mr. Wilbert Collins. The South Lafourche Public Library hosts a meeting every third Tuesday on the month from 3 to 5 p.m., focusing on “La Table Francaise”, a two-hour meeting held in French, dedicated to the preservation of the Cajun culture.
SL Bantam hosting Ralph Pere Football Camp
South Lafourche Bantam is teaming up with the family of Ralph Pere for a football camp. The camp will be hosted by Reed Pere, the Pere family, SLHS football staff, SLHS football players and SL Bantam, at the Larose Bantam Field (behind Larose Library) on Saturday, July 28th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Youth from ages 613 can participate. Registration is $20 and includes camp, t-shirt, and plate lunch. Plate lunches will also be sold to the public for $8 per plate. Face painting and games will be available free to the younger children. Concessions will also be sold. A DJ/band will be playing for the parents to enjoy. Please come out and support our youth. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will host free Hunter Education Classroom Courses in July for anyone ages 10 or older. The classroom course will be offered Wednesday, July 25 through Thursday, July 26. The first day will be the classroom portion from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lafourche Fire District #3 Galliano Station, located at 17462 West Main Street in Galliano. Concealed handgun course slated for Saturday, July 21
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will hold a Concealed Handgun Training Course on Saturday, July 21, at the LPSO Shooting Range Facility located at 3451 Highway 182 in Raceland. The class will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until approximately 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. The actual ending time will vary due to class size. The cost for the course is $110, and advance registration is suggested due to limited class size. This course is a prerequisite for those applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit from the State of Louisiana. Tarpon Battalion hosting Summer Seminar July 17-19 at SLHS
Plan your block parties now for National Night Out Aug. 7 The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will once again be participating in the National Night Out Against Crime scheduled for Tuesday, August 7. This is the 35th annual nationwide event. Citizens will host block parties throughout the parish, and Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies will be attending to meet community members to discuss crime prevention and any other concerns. Explorers from POST 323 will also be conducting fingerprinting and DNA swabbing in some areas. LPSO will supply the parties with hot dogs, but each party is encouraged to organize additional food and refreshments with attendees. That tax is currently 0.7 percent. If the 1 percent is approved, the proposition states, it will generate about $8.5 million per year. During the 2014 mid-term elections, turnout was over 50 percent in Lafourche, local registrar officials said. Lafourche resident Al Carter took a Facebook poll to determine how the public felt about the issue. Of the 938 votes the poll received, 97 percent were in favor of a reduction. “This battle has become personal for some representatives and is no longer about saving money or amending the budget,” said Breaux’s husband, Mark. “This cut would amount to less than 1 percent of the board’s total spending.” If the board drops by four members, it would directly save more than $39,000 per year, Business Manager Don Gaudet said. The number rises to more than $58,000 if it drops six members and more than $77,000 if it drops eight. Mark Breaux says this issue has been voted on four or five times in the past with the same results. He added that failure to find closure will eventually drag down the entire School Board. “This board had the

chance to save money by reducing the stipend from $800 to $400 a month for School Board members, but that motion was postponed indefinitely,” he said. Proponents of the 15-member board say with more members, more ideas and opinions can be presented that others may not have realized. Mark Breaux said this will, in turn, elevate discussion and make for a quality board. If the board is reduced from 15 to nine, it would leave north Lafourche with four votes, central Lafourche with three votes and south Lafourche with two. parents and currently have two longterm placements in our home, a 9-year old and a 16-year old foster son. All of our children attend public school in Lafourche Parish with five of our children attending Cut Off Elementary and our oldest child attending South Lafourche High School. As a parent of six children in the public school system, I am a proponent of public education and I know firsthand what our children and educators go through every day to make sure our children are receiving the best possible education. It has been through dedication and hard work that this school district is rated an “A” school district in the state of Louisiana. I vow to make sure that we continue to have the right resources in place to make sure we remain an “A” district. I have been, and will continue to be, an advocate for all children of our school system. With a new superintendent being appointed by the end of 2018, it is imperative that we restore the faith of this board back into the public. As public servants, to not only our constituents but all constituents of this district, we must have open communications at all time and be easily accessible to the public. I am in support of a reduction in the number of board members from 15 to 9 and we must work together as a board to figure out a way to properly compensate educators for the amount of time they invest into our kids’ education. Adams From 1-A
He officially served as a member of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission board for 20 years, most of them as chairman of the construction committee. He was appointed in June 1998 to fill Robert Champagne’s seat, was subsequently elected by special election to complete that term through 2000, then re-elected for three full terms as Port Commissioner by the people of the Tenth Ward of Lafourche Parish before his passing in June 2018. Before commissioners were elected, however, Bruce worked on what would become Port Fourchon with its founding father, Louisiana State Senator A.O. Rappelet. Vin told tales of holding the tape measure for “Rap” while he planned out his vision for the port. While Ervin Bruce held down a career in construction, he also, according to his fellow commissioners, “put us on the map” with his music. Vin Bruce brought Cajun music to the masses, winning awards and hearts throughout his long musical career. Lockport man arrested for Arrest reports solicitation of teenage girl
The following information is based on reports from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Those individuals have been booked with, not convicted of, the offenses shown. All accused should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
A Lockport man has been arrested for attempting to solicit a teenage girl for sex. Drexel Verdin Jr., 39, has been charged in the incident. At around 1 p.m. on July 1, deputies responded to a complaint on West 27th Street in Larose. Deputies said a 17-year-old female had been walking on the street when she was approached by a man, later identified as Verdin. He made contact with the teen and allegedly asked her for sex in exchange for money or drugs. When she declined, he asked to take nude photos of her instead. When she declined again, Verdin reportedly exited his vehicle and grabbed her arm. The victim was able to get away from Verdin, and he entered his car and fled the area. Following an investigation, detectives identified Verdin as the
suspect, and they obtained warrants for his arrest. Then on Tuesday, July 10, deputies observed Verdin driving in Lockport and initiated a traffic stop. Verdin was taken into custody for the active warrants. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux on charges of Soliciting for Prostitutes and Simple Battery. He was subsequently released on Wednesday, July 11, after posting $6,000 bond.

What a Life!

Abbot Aelred (11091167) was the abbot of the English Cistercian abbey of Rievaulz from 1147-1167. During his abbacy he built Rievaulx into a place of spiritual welcome and physical prosperity, wanting to make it a “mother of mercy” to those in need. In a three-book dialogue, Aelred defines human friendship as sacramental, beginning with creation, as God sought to place his own love of society in all his creatures, then linking friends to Christ in this life and culminating in friendship with God in heaven. His work on Spiritual Friendship is today the best known and perhaps most influential of his 13 surviving works. The following is Abbot Aelred’s Biblical homily on David’s and Jonathan’s (King Saul’s son) friendship. Jonathan, outstanding among all young men, took no heed of his royal lineage or his hope of the throne, but allied himself with David the servant and made him his equal in friendship before the Lord. The king had made David a fugitive, forced him to hide in the desert, and condemned him to death. Yet Jonathan preferred David to himself, exalting him, humbling himself. “You,” he said, “will be king and I will follow you.” What a splendid picture of true friendship! What an astonishing situation! Here was the king, raging against his servant and stirring up the whole country as if David were aiming at the crown. He accuses the priests of treason and puts them to death on a mere suspicion. He combs and searches woods and valleys, besieges the mountains and rocky crags with troops, and every man is sworn to wreak vengeance upon the source of the king’s indignation. Only Jonathan, who alone should have had greater cause for envy, thought it right to resist his father. Putting himself at the service of his friend, he offered help and advice in his time of need. Jonathan set friendship above a kingdom. “You are to be the king,” he said, “and I will be second to you.” Still, the father tried to incite his son to envy David. He covered him with abuse and frightened him by threatening to deprive him of the kingdom and strip him of his rank. When the king pronounced sentence of death upon David,

Jonathan still did not desert his friend. “Why should David die? How has he sinned? What has he done? When he risked his life and killed the Philistine, you rejoiced. Why then should he die?” So maddened was the king at these words that he tried to pin Jonathan to the wall with his spear, heaping further abuse and threats upon him. “Bastard son of a wayward woman,” he screamed, “I know well that, to your undoing and that of your shameful mother’s, you love him.” With this he spewed forth the full measure of his venom over Jonathan and uttered the words that were his final attempt to arouse bitter envy and jealous ambition: “As long as the son of Jesse lives, you will never establish your kingdom.” Who would not be
moved to envy by these words? Whose love, whose favor, whose abiding friendship would not be corrupted, weakened and destroyed by such an utterance? Yet in his great love, this young man kept faith with his friend. He was steadfast in the face of threats, unmoved by insults; forgetting renown, he thought only of service. He spurned a kingdom for the sake of friendship. “You,” he said, “will be king, and I will be second to you.” This is what truly a perfect, stable and lasting friendship is, a tie that envy cannot spoil, nor suspicion weaken, nor ambition destroy. A friendship so tempted yielded not an inch, was buffeted but did not collapse. In the face of so many insults, it remained unshaken. Go, therefore, and do likewise.
