Lafourche drainage projects showing results By Dan Boudreaux Daily Comet Staff Writer

Two drainage projectsWin south Lafourche Parish that have been in the works since Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008 are producing dramatic results for residents as they near completion. The project along La. 3235 near Frank’s Supermarket in Larose involved redirecting the drainage ditches and lines. That has allowed for the water to flow out of the areas where it previously pooled and nearly flooded neighborhoods along both sides of the highway from West Ninth to West 14th streets. “You can’t imagine the difference. Before this, I was telling people I was going to have Bayou Lafourche in my front yard,” said Jerry See Projects Page 5-A

First Baptist Church of Golden Meadow hosting first annual free Thanksgiving Day feast Holly McKeon Contributing Writer

Thanksgiving is thought to have originated in 1623 in Plymouth, MA, as a day of prayer and feasting, taking place to express gratitude for the end of a drought that had befallen the new colony. It was initially considered a harvest festival and celebrated on a national level on and off since 1789 when Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. A fact many may not be aware of is in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln actually declared two days of national Thanksgiving - the first celebrated in August to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg, and the more familiar Thanksgiving celebrated in November as a federal holiday to give thanks and praise. Today, Thanksgiving is a day of tradition, feasting on fabulous foods comprised of old family recipes, surrounded by family, friends, and football. More importantly, the day is also one of giving thanks, practicing hu-

mility, self-reflection, and extending one’s bounty for others to enjoy. It is a great time to put away the cell phones and other gadgets, engage in heartfelt conversations all the while embracing one another with love, peace, and laughter. The First Baptist Church of Golden Meadow will be doing just that when they host their first annual Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, November 23 at noon. We spoke to Bernadette Chouest of FBC who said, “With so much to be thankful for, First Baptist Church of Golden Meadow will be opening its doors to the whole community on Thanksgiving Day.” “We are reaching out to those who may need a place to celebrate Thanksgiving with a particular focus on those who may be alone or that Thanksgiving would be a financial burden. We will serve a full meal, have fellowship, and share with them the love of Jesus Christ,” said Chouest. “FBC invites our community to come share a meal with us. This will See Dinner Page 4-A

A doctor’s cure

A woman went to the doctors office, where she was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and told her to go relax in another room.

The older doctor marched down hallway to the back where the first doctor was and demanded, “What’s the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was PREGNANT?” The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said, “Well, yes I did! But I bet her hiccups are gone now!”

Consumers considering used car purchases urged to check out vehicle history

Consumers in the market to purchase a used car should keep an eye out for flood-damaged vehicles during their search. Hurricanes and flooding events in Louisiana and nearby states in the last few months mean that consumers need to be on their guard. “Louisiana has been through enough floods to know that the aftermath can bring out scammers and people looking to take advantage of unsuspecting victims,” said Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. “Protecting yourself and your finances from vehicles that have been flooded or otherwise damaged beyond repair is important enough that consumers should be willing to walk away from deals that can’t be researched.” Under Louisiana state law, if a vehicle has been declared a total loss because it has flooded, it cannot be resold. Consumers should be aware that any vehicle that is declared a total loss as a result of flooding and is issued an insurance settlement will become the property of the insurance company and be issued a certificate of destruction. The policyholder will not have the opportunity to buy the vehicle back if it was a total loss caused by flooding. Any vehicle whose power train, computer or electrical system has been damaged by flooding is a total loss under Louisiana law. The law has an exemption for antique vehicles. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), overseen by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, is designed to prevent concealment of flood damage and help consumers research a vehicle’s history. A list of approved vehicle history report providers can be found on the NMVTIS website at www.vehiclehistory.go v/nmvtis_vehiclehistory.html. Many car owners don’t carry comprehensive auto coverage that covers flood damage, so those vehicle histories may not reflect that they had water damage. Taking extra precautions can save you time and money when buying a used vehicle. The Louisiana Department of Insurance offers the following tips: Check the vehicle for hidden damage. While a vehicle may look perfectly fine on the surface, there could be hidden damage that is not immediately noticeable. Flood damage can compromise the vehicle’s computer and safety mechanisms, which pose significant safety hazards to the new owner. Do your own inspection. Take time to inspect the vehicle yourself or arrange for it to be looked at by a mechanic you trust before purchasing. Know the signs of flood damage. Check the vehicle for water damage

Megan Chiasson, a member of the South Lafourche High School FFA chapter in Galliano, was on stage and in the spotlight Oct. 25-28 during the 2017 National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. Chiasson, a sophomore at South Lafourche High School and the daughter of Chett and Lana Chiasson, was selected to play trombone in the National FFA Band. She submitted an audition tape and was selected to help bring full instrumental balance to the band from a pool of applicants nationwide. The National FFA Band performed several times during the national convention and expo. Chiasson joined fellow band members in Indianapolis for rehearsals three days before the convention and expo began. A huge thank you goes to the South Lafourche High School band directors, Randy Chiasson and Jared Boudreaux, as well as, FFA Chapter Sponsor Eric Zak for supporting Megan in this endeavor.

Thank You Lafourche Parish

It has been the greatest pleasure of my professional life to have served you, the citizens of Lafourche Parish, as your District Attorney for the past fifteen years. I cannot move on to the next phase of my life without first taking the opportunity to thank all of you, from the bottom of my heart, for having entrusted me with this awesome responsibility. From the moment I was first elected in 2002, I have tried to justify your trust in me by giving this job the best of my skill, time and effort. I hope I succeeded in that regard. In the thirty years I’ve been a prosecutor in Lafourche, I’ve seen how crime can affect our community. That’s why I have dedicated my life to bringing justice to our parish, and why I look forward to continuing my life’s work as I once again assume the role of an assistant district attorney. Serving as District Attorney has been both gratifying and humbling. The relationships I have formed on this journey have been and will remain very special to me and my family. I will always be grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. So again, thank you for allowing me to serve you as District Attorney. It is an honor I will always cherish.

Ledet. “Now when it rains the water actually drains out of here.” According to Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle, the project should have been a state job, but the parish decided to do much of the work itself. The parish was also able to get rights-of-way from land owners like Ledet to run the drainage lines under yards to cut the total project cost from $4 million to just over $1 million. The other project that’s nearing completion is the road and drainage work along La. 308 in Golden Meadow. Before the project, Councilman Daniel Lorraine said, rainwater would take weeks to drain off the road. “This services around 100 people. I wish we could have gotten more, but getting a road and drainage project together is rare. We were fortunate to get both,” Lorraine said. The Golden Meadow project saw drainage improvements and the road being raised around 11 inches at a cost just over $700,000. Both projects were paid for through Community Development Block Grants.

We just want to open our doors to those who may not have a place to celebrate Thanksgiving or cannot afford to celebrate Thanksgiving though we invite everyone in the community. We are trying to give people a place to spend Thanksgiving Day that is not by themselves.” Bernadette explained. Although no takeouts are available everyone is welcomed to stay, enjoy a great meal and conversation with friends or new acquaintances. Here are a few fun facts about Thanksgiving, which could be great conversation starters! Did you know Americans eat approximately

46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving Day or that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be our National bird instead of the eagle? Another fun fact, in 1953, Swanson had close to 260 tons of extra turkey after Thanksgiving. A salesman brought up the idea of packing the leftover turkey into aluminum trays along with some side dishes. Viola! TV dinners were born! Lastly, Campbell’s soup originated the green bean casserole when about fifty years ago they published the recipe in their annual cookbook. Now, Campbell’s sells more than 20 million dollars in cream of mushroom soup every year! FBC would like the community to know they will provide pick-up and drop off services for those who need a ride. The event is free and open to everyone who would like to join. The menu will consists of turkey and gravy, rice dressing, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, corn/peas, sweet potato crunch, cranberry sauce, rolls, and a wide array of desserts. Colonels drop nail-biter in River Bell Classic, 21-17, playoff chances uncertain

HAMMOND, La. — For the third straight year, the River Bell Classic came down to the final play, but like last year, the No. 17/25 Nicholls State University football team was on the short end as the Colonels dropped a 21-17 decision Thursday night at Strawberry Stadium. Nicholls led 17-7 early in the third quarter before Southeastern Louisiana (6-5, 6-3 SLC) used its potent rushing attack to score two unanswered touchdowns. The Colonels had one last chance after getting the ball back with 33 seconds left in the game, but a Hail Mary from the SLU 37 was intercepted in the end zone on the final play. With the loss, Nicholls dropped to 8-3 overall, 7-2 in the Southland and is eliminated

from contention for the Southland Conference regular season championship. The setback also slimmed the Colonels’ chances of earning their first playoff berth since 2005. Nicholls totaled 323 yards of offense with 229 on the ground, despite playing without the Southland’s leading rusher, Kyran Irvin. But the Colonels were shut down in the second half, scoring only an early field goal in the third quarter. Tahj Smith followed up his career game last week with 84 yards on 13 carries, and Dontrell Taylor added 74 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Taylor put Nicholls on the board for a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The defense held SLU to 95 yards in the

first half, but a big run by Marcus Cooper went for 67 yards to even the game at 7-7. For the night, Nicholls totaled 11 tackles for loss, led by Terrell Encalade with three. Ahmani Martin made several big stops for the Colonels, finishing with a teamhigh nine tackles. Early in the second, the Colonels put together a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive to regain the lead. Nicholls ran the ball eight times, but it was 15-yard receptions by Jarrell Rodgers and Damion Jeanpiere Jr. that fueled the possession. Rogers started the drive with his catch and Jeanpiere’s put Nicholls at the SLU 14. Three plays later, Nicholls ran an end around for Jeanpiere and he scored from 7 yards out to double the lead. The second interception ended another drive for Nicholls with 1:39 remaining, but the defense held Southeastern to a three-and-out as the Colonels took over at their own 25 with 33 seconds left. Fourcade scrambled three times for 8, 12 and 18 yards, setting up a final play with 4 ticks on the clock. Like in last season’s 44-42 loss, Fourcade heaved a pass into the end zone, but Lyons came down with the ball for SLU to keep the River Bell in Hammond for the second straight year. The Lions finished with 267 yards on the

Cooper totaled 142 yards on the ground on just 11 carries. The eight wins is the

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd

Jesus wants us to see the eternal principles behind the laws

Jesus condemns the religious leaders of his day for making religion a show for others to see. Jesus was always interested in the principles behind the laws. Jesus condemns the Scribes and Pharisees for worrying about all the rules and regulations and forgetting their purpose. All Ten Commandments are based on two great principles. The first is reverence – reverence for God, for God’s name, for God’s day, for the parents God has given to us. The second principle is respect – respect for human life, for a person’s possessions, for their personality, for their good name, for oneself. These principles are eternal. The Scribes and Pharisees’ whole outlook on religion had one fundamental defect. By creating thousands upon thousands of rules and regulations, they made religion an intolerable burden. Here is a good test to find out whether a religion is true. Does it act like wings to lift a person up, or like deadweight to drag a person down? Does religion bring joy to a person or sorrow? Does religion carry a person, or does the person have to carry it? Whenever religion becomes a matter of burdens and prohibitions, it ceases to be true religion. They also turned religion into show business. If religion consists in obeying countless rules and regulations, it becomes easy for people to “show” everyone else how well they fulfill those regulations, and how pious they are. Jesus selected certain actions and customs that the Pharisees displayed as their piety. Jesus said, “They make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long.” The phylacteries were little leather boxes that devout Jews wore on their wrist and forehead. These little boxes contained key scripture passages. These men wore large boxes, to draw attention to themselves. The Pharisees liked to be given the principal places at meals, on the left and on the right of the host. They liked the front seats in the synagogues. In Palestine the children and unimportant people occupied the back seats. The front row seats were reserved as places of honor. The most honored seats of all were the seats of the elders, which faced the congregation. When the Pharisees sat there, everyone could

see them and notice the false air of piety. The Pharisee also liked to be addressed as Rabbi and to be treated with the greatest respect. They claimed greater respect than that which was given to parents, for they said, one’s parents give ordinary, physical life, but a person’s teacher gives eternal life. They even liked to be called father as Elisha called Elijah (2 Kgs. 2:12) and as the fathers of the faith were known. Jesus insists that Christians should remember that they have only one teacher – and that teacher is Christ.

produces showy displays of piety and pride is a false religion. The 19th-century Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, reminded us that in a church service, the presider, the choir, the homilist, the reader, the organist, and those of us just sitting in the pews are the actors, and God is the audience. God is watching. In our everyday Christian lives, God is the audience. If we remember who the audience is, our lives will become magnificent acts of worship and living. And God will applaud.

The Christian has only one Father in the faith – and that Father is God. Jesus is not saying that we should not call our teacher in school, “teacher,” or our priests, “father.” He is emphasizing that we have only one teacher and one father. We should never forget that! The Pharisees wanted to dress and act in a way that draws attention to themselves. The real Christian should be willing to die to self so that if people see their good deeds, they may glorify not the person, but our heavenly Father. Any religion that
