Distracted driver kills motorcyclist

Louisiana State Police reported shortly after 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, Troop C Troopers began investigating W a two-vehicle fatality crash on LA 307 just north of the St. Lawrence Church near Kraemer. The crash took the life of 65-year old Dana Caparros of Larose. The preliminary investigation revealed 20year old Sierra Mathes of Lockport was traveling north on LA 307 in a 2004 Honda Accord. Caparros was traveling south on LA 307 on a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Mathes entered a right curve in the roadway, crossed the center line, and struck Caparros in the southbound lane. Caparros suffered serious injuries and was transported to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service where he later succumbed to his injuries. Mathes was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured. Caparros was wearing a DOT approved helmet. See Accident Page 3-A

Southeast Louisiana wetland project brings together energy, conservation, and community partners

HOUMA, La. – Recognizing that Louisiana’s coastal wetland loss impacts everyone, Ducks Unlimited and ConocoPhillips have teamed with the South Lafourche Levee District and Energy Transfer Partners to restore more than 1,200 acres of coastal marsh in southeast Louisiana. “It is good to see other industry partners adding to DU’s coastal restoration efforts,” ConocoPhillips retired Director of Coastal Wetlands Phil Precht said. “Coastal wetlands protect the infrastructure we all depend on, and that shows in the way this project has support from conservation, energy and community partners.” Ducks Unlimited constructed the

marsh terracing project on ConocoPhillips’ property adjacent to the South Lafourche Levee District’s protection levee. Approximately 29,000 linear feet of earthen terraces were installed to create suitable conditions for desirable plant communities that will enhance foraging, loafing and nesting conditions for a multitude of waterbirds while also improving habitat for fish and helping to protect the levee. “Energy Transfer has long been committed to environmental stewardship,” said Energy Transfer Partners Chief Operating Officer Matthew Ramsey, a long-time member of Ducks Unlimited. “It plays a

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana and Mississippi are leading the nation in the number of people who have become the most seriously ill from West Nile virus this year. State health departments are warning residents to take precautions against mosquitoes, which spread the virus. “Not in my house, not on my skin, not in my yard,” said Dr. Raoult Ratard, Louisiana’s state epidemiologist, as he repeated the state slogan for fighting the disease Wednesday. Precautions include making sure door and window screens don’t have holes; wearing long clothes and using mosquito repellent; and making sure the yard doesn’t hold any standing water where mosquitoes might breed — even in something as small as a bottle cap. Records: Man accused in deaths says arrest stopped his spree

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Records say a Louisiana man accused of killing three people last year and wounding another told authorities his arrest stopped his planned killing spree. Citing court records, The Advocate reports Ryan Sharpe compared killing humans to hunting deer, telling authorities he had 12 government-issued hunting “tags left to fill. He said he’d filled five tags by killing the men and a deer, which he says counted for two tags. An East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Department report says Sharpe told authorities he would have finished filling the tags and turned himself in had it not been for his October arrest. Authorities say Sharpe shot four people, three fatally, in a string of attacks that left residents in a rural area north of Baton Rouge on edge for weeks. A judge ruled Sharpe incompetent to stand trial last week. Information from: The Advocate, http://theadvocate.com ___

Louisiana library plans ‘Drag Queen Story Time’ for children

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Residents are defending a Louisiana public library’s plan to host fraternity brothers who are going to read to young children while dressed as drag queens. All but one of the 20plus citizens who spoke at Tuesday’s Lafayette City-Parish Council meeting said they support the Oct. 6 “Drag Queen Story Time, The Advertiser reported. The event is being planned by a provisional chapter of the Delta Lambda Phi fraternity at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The fraternity was founded by gay men and embraces bisexual, transgender and progressive men. “It’s important for young kids to understand this is normal behavior, even if it may be different to some, Brad Parfait, a sophomore at UL-Lafayette told The Advocate . “It’s not something you should be bullied over. Similar events have been held in Atlanta,

New York City and Orlando, Florida. The library system’s director, Teresa Elberson, says she has no plans to cancel the event, unless the library governing board instructs otherwise. ___

Grocery stocks clerk gets car after his kind act went viral

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A grocery store clerk whose act of kindness toward an autistic 17year-old went viral has been given a new car. Jordan Taylor was given the car Tuesday after the Rouses Market employee’s kind gesture went viral last month, The Advocate of Baton Rouge reported. Taylor, 20, had been shelving bottled orange juice when he noticed Jack Ryan “Ziggy Edwards watching him. Edwards was transfixed by the work, Taylor told news outlets, so the clerk asked if Edwards wanted to help. The two quickly established a system in which Taylor picked up orange juice and milk containers and handed them to the teenager, who promptly put each carton in its proper place. Edwards’ father,

Webb, said they’re proud of Taylor for pursuing his dream of becoming a math teacher by enrolling at Grambling State University. A crowd-funding account has raised more than $100,000 toward Taylor’s college tuition. The teen was offered a job helping to stock shelves part time.

Central High School football coach Sid Edwards, filmed the two working together and had a conversation with Taylor in which he said he hoped to go back to school someday and become a teacher. Neighbors Federal Credit Union announced it had given Taylor the car. The company’s president and CEO, Steve

Impairment is not suspected as a factor in this crash; however, a standard toxicology report is pending on the part of Caparros. Mathes submitted a breath sample which showed no alcohol present. Distraction is suspected to be a factor on the part of Mathes and this crash remains under investigation. Troopers urge motorists to avoid all distractions while driving. Distractions, such as cell phones, passengers, radios, etc., take a driver’s focus away from the road. When focus is taken away from the road, the serious injury and fatality crash rate rises. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving please visit the government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov.

to complete this project, Parish Councilman Michael Gros said. “The first phase of this project is to the replace and raise the decking. By increasing the height of the dock, water will be able to flow under the dock, which will prevent the constant buildup of vegetation and floating debris,” the group said in a Facebook post this week. “This will also make the dock more user-friendly during high water levels.” Friends of Bayou Lafourche are also working to compile a list of all launches, parks and other facilities along the bayou as part of the overall mission to revitalize its recreational use. Efforts to remove the weir in the center of the Thibodaux area are also continuing. Gros said the new floating dock will help prepare the area for when it is removed. “Once that weir comes out, we can anticipate more recreation on the bayou than in the past in the Thibodaux area,” he said. The Theriot Boat Launch in Raceland recently received some major improvements as well, including repairs to the bulkhead, reconstruction of the wooden wharf and a concrete sidewalk, Dufrene said. project for $112,900. The launch leads from Theriot Canal to Bayou Lafourche. Councilwoman Luci Sposito said the launch has been needing a complete overhaul for years to improve functionality. Smaller improvements have also been made to the Lockport, Leeville, Butch Hill, Golden Meadow and Larousse boat launches, Dufrene said. Those include adding limestone, smaller wharf repairs and ramp improvements. The recent Lafourche Parish boat launch projects and costs include: - Lockport Boat Launch: The Department of Public Works lifted the concrete ramp, repaired the wharf and added limestone. Cost: $15,600. Leighton Boat Launch: DPW is making wharf repairs at an estimated cost of $4,000. A floating dock will be installed pending council approval at a cost of $19,900. Theriot Boat Launch: Dupré Brothers made improvements to the bulkhead and reconstructed the existing wooden wharf with a vinyl bulkhead and concrete sidewalk. Cost: $112,900. Leeville Boat Launch: Water district installed a meter. Cost: $560. - Butch Hill Boat Launch: Limestone was added at a cost of $1,600. - Golden Meadow Boat Launch: DPW installed boards at the bottom of the three new docks. Cost: $1,077. - Larousse Boat Launch: Limestone was added at a cost of $1,975. West Nile From 1-A

meningitis out of a national total of 133, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday on its website. Mississippi had 15 such “neuroinvasive” cases, Texas 14 and California 12. South Dakota had nine, Iowa seven, Nebraska six and Alabama and Pennsylvania five each. Dr. Paul Byers, Mississippi’s state epidemiologist, said Mississippi is “always” among the states with the highest rates for West Nile virus. “Regardless of whether we report the disease in your county ... we want everybody to take those appropriate precautions,” Byers said. Reports of infections of the brain and nervous system are more reliable indicators of West Nile’s seriousness than statistics for flu-like West Nile fever or symptomless infections found most often when people donate blood, he and Ratard both said. That’s because most patients will be hospitalized, Ratard said. “And it’s the major problem with West Nile,” he added. “One out of 10 (with neuroinvasive West Nile virus) will die; one out of 10 will have per-

manent disabilities.” The CDC reported eight deaths so far this year: two in South Dakota and one each in Louisiana, Iowa, Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. Overall, the CDC said, 45 states and the District of Columbia have reported the virus in people, birds or mosquitoes this year. About one in five infected people becomes ill, and the virus spreads to the nervous system in about one in 150, according to the CDC. West Nile fever diagnoses depend on whether a patient even goes to the doctor, and then on whether the doctor tests for it. And most people bitten by an infected mosquito never show any symptoms. They’re diagnosed only if their blood is tested. The CDC reported 98 cases of fever and 89 positive blood tests. Ratard said 1,054 people in Louisiana have come down with the most serious form of the disease over the past 16 years. “So we probably have 100,000 to 200,000 people that were infected in Louisiana, and that are immune,” Ratard said. CDC figures often lag behind state reports. Louisiana reports there have been 31 residents with dangerous nervous system infections, including two deaths, and 13 cases of West Nile fever. Mississippi has reported 10 fever cases in addition to the 15 nervous system infections, Byers said. Variations from state to state and year to year depend on various local factors, Ratard said. He noted that although Louisiana is seeing more cases this year than last, numbers are still down considerably from the worst years, such as 2002 and 2012. Louisiana had 142 nervous system infections by this week in 2002, out of a total of 204 for the

year. There were 95 such cases by now in 2012, out of 160 for the year. There were nearly 3,000 cases of encephalitis and meningitis caused by the virus in both 2002 and 2012.

Gulf Coast marshes provide continentally critical habitat for wintering waterfowl and represent a top habitat conservation priority for Ducks Unlimited. “Louisiana’s coastal marshes are a focus of DU’s Gulf Coast Initiative,” said DU Director of the Southern Region Jerry Holden Jr. “Though Ducks Unlimited focuses our conservation efforts where waterfowl need us most, these same wetlands provide many functions and values necessary for sustaining wildlife and fishery resources, local communities and

ecosystems. From waterfowl habitat to clean water and community protection, wetlands are nature’s greatest assets, and we work with partners across North America to enhance and restore them.” Leaders from the South Lafourche Levee District recognize the importance of projects like this one for community protection. The Bayou Monnaie project fits into the Levee District concept of Comprehensive Hurricane Protection, creating a marsh apron to protect the toe of the levee from every day wave action while benefiting wildlife and fisheries resources. “All communities need infrastructure, an economy and a good environment. This project

helps us get closer to all three goals,” said SLLD General Manager Windell Curole. “What makes this project better is that all of our partners understand those goals and how to make them work together for our community.”

Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 14 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 If you want to get out and see the sights, you have to plan an excursion, Aries. Start planning a vacation and don’t forget to invite a pal along for the trip. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Do not be quick to accept the word “no,” Taurus. If you are seeking a promotion, it may take another round of negotiations to sell your position to a supervisor. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Some things are at play and you may need to gather some facts. Don’t try to piece things together, but rather start at the beginning and get a comprehensive view. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You have to hunker down and work through tasks that hold little interest for you, Cancer. Success comes from tending to all of the details, even those that are less interesting. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Plenty of opportunities to make big changes are on the horizon, Leo. You need to figure out what it is you want to do with yourself and where to make change.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, sit quietly aside and let others talk while you listen. Listening can be a great way to learn about others as well as yourself. Use this time wisely. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, indecisiveness may cost you in the days ahead. Try to come to a decision on an important situation so you can begin moving forward once again. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Sometimes you don’t see the purpose behind certain actions. Don’t hesitate to ask questions to clear things up. Forge ahead and things will become clearer. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sooner or later, if you try different things you are bound to stumble on the right course of action, Sagittarius. It just may take longer than you initially expected. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Don’t worry if you cannot get your act together just yet, Capricorn. You will find your groove soon enough and everything will ultimately fall in place.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd We should not judge or profile a person by their outward appearances

The following edited story was sent to me by a reader: Our house was right across the street from the John Hopkins Hospital clinic’s entrance in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the clinic. One summer evening when I was fixing supper, someone knocked at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. He is hardly taller than my 8year-old, I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. The appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and raw. His voice was pleasant as he said, “Good evening. Do you have a room for just one night? I came for a treatment this morning, and there’s no bus ‘til morning. I’ve been hunting for a room since noon with no success. No one seemed to have a room. I guess it’s my face. I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments … ” I hesitated but his next words convinced me, “I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.” I told him we would find him a bed, but rest on the porch. I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. “No, thank you. I have plenty.” He held up a brown paper bag. When I finished supper, I went on the porch to talk with him. It did not take long to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was crippled from a back injury. He did not say it by way of complaint. In fact, he prefaced every other sentence with a thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the little man neatly folded the bed linens and seated himself on the porch.

He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, he humbly asked for a big favor, “Could I please come back and stay here the next time I have a treatment? I would be glad to sleep in a chair.” He paused a moment and added, “Your children made me feel at home. My face bothers grownups, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again. On his next trip, he arrived about 7:00 a.m. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had ever seen! He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that they would be very fresh. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a.m. I wondered what time he had to get up to do this for us. In the years he came to stay overnight, there was never a time he did-

n’t bring fish, oysters or vegetables from his garden. When I received these little gifts, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. “Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!” Maybe we lost roomers once or twice but if only they could have known him. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him. We learned what it means to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God. He was a gift for us. “The Lord does not see as humans see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (1 Sam 16:7) So should we!
