Are You Ok? Free service for the elderly and disabled offered by LPSO Holly McKeon Contributing Writer

In 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau released W a study drawn heavily from the 2010 census reflecting eleven million or twenty-eight percent of people aged 65 and older, lived alone. Seniors living alone can lead to social isolation, which can have a devastating impact on their health and well-being. Social isolation can transpire once a senior enters retirement and therefore does not have the opportunity to be as active in society as they may wish. It must also be taken into account that as the elderly community continues to age; at some point, there can begin to be a lack of mobility, whether attributed to health problems See Are You OK? or inability to drive. Each of these scenarios can create obstacles in social engagement and interaction with others. Bereavement can be another risk factor for social isolation, as seniors who might have been married for many years suddenly find themselves alone. Additionally, according to AARP, more and more seniors do not have children meaning fewer family members to check in on them, provide care, and even companionship. Lack of friends, family, or resources can create a wide gap in a senior’s ability to utilize adequate social support networks, which are vital for the well-being of the senior community. Consider as well that a vast majority of the elderly reported having one or more disabilities in 2010, with the most common difficulties being walking, climbing stairs, and doing errands alone. Although there are great social programs such as senior centers, meals on wheels, and other supportive services, it is essential that seniors are aware and utilize as many resources as they can to assist with engagement activities but also and maybe even more importantly, securing a safety net. Lafourche Parish Sheriff Office’s Social Services deputies hold a special place in their hearts for members of the senior community. In an effort to ensure

their needs are being met, deputies often stop by senior centers and nursing homes throughout the parish to engage and visit with them. To assist the elderly within the community on a greater level, LPSO social services department implemented the “Are You OK” program in 2007. The program is a free telephone reassurance service designed to enhance the quality of life for older adults, or adults with disabilities, who live alone or who are at risk of sudden illness, falls, accidents, and/or social isolation. Currently, LPSO SSD has twenty-five participants enrolled. Through the program, the Sheriff’s Office places a daily-automated call to each person enrolled at a specified time. If there is no answer or response, the sheriff’s department will try two additional times, or if there is an emergency contact listed at the time of enrollment, they will call the alternate number. If there is still no response, LPSO dispatches a deputy is to the residence to ensure the person’s safety. LPSO Lt. Brennan Matherne said, “In the twelve months spanning December 1, 2016 through November 30, 2017, we had fifty-two instances where an officer responded after receiving no answer.” Lt. Matherne went on to recount a previous incident, which reflects the value of the program when he stated: See Are You OK? Page 3-A

Roundup From 1-A

Of the 66 individuals, 28 were specifically targeted in the roundup as the highest priority. A total of 20 individuals were arrested as part of the operation, and two other fugitives were arrested who were not part of the operation. Officials say they expect additional arrests to be made in the coming days. The combined child support payments owed by the arrested individuals amounts to nearly $430,000. The Knights of Columbus Hall on St. Patrick Street in Thibo-

daux served as the base of operations for Thursday’s roundup. This operation combined the efforts of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office, Thibodaux Police Department, Port Fourchon Harbor Police, and the Louisiana Department of Probation and Parole. “These roundups are important to impress upon these people that they do have an obligation to pay,” said Sheriff Webre. “We hope this effort sends a message to the community, especially to those who are behind on their child support payments, that we are vigilant in holding these individuals accountable for what they owe.” Anyone who owes child support payments is encouraged to contact the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office at (985) 448-3422 as soon as possible. Anyone who knows the location of any person wanted for failure to pay child support can submit information anonymously via Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by calling 1-800-743-7433 or by submitting a tip online at www.crimestoppersbr.org.

Aline

From 1-A

This was about the time I met Aline. My wife, Dot, had known her for many years through their activities in the Golden Meadow Women’s Club. I met her at a house party in our home and found her to be the most enthusiastic, positive person I had ever met. She must have been thirty years older than all of us but acted much younger. I learned later on that while in her nineties, Aline was an active participant in an exercise program at Physiofit in Galliano and was even on a billboard advertising the value of keeping in good health. Each year we looked forward to receiving a Christmas letter from Aline. It was always filled with fun and positive thoughts and always reminding us of her never ending quest to find another man to spend the rest of her life with. Her letter always ended with this quote: “We can’t all be stars, but we can all twinkle.” Aline is also one of the most independent women I have ever met. She lived alone in her home and enjoyed cooking holiday meals for her family and friends. She drove her car until she was about 95 when she called and asked if I would sell it because she had decided it was time for her to stop driving. I remember having the difficult task of taking away my mother’s and mother-in-law’s vehicles to protect them

and the public from their erratic driving. Aline made the hard decisions without burdening family or friends. Neighbors and friends would grocery shop for her and help with her yard. Aline loved it when friends would stop by to visit and particularly loved to talk politics when I would drop by. She always remained informed and interested in what was happening on the bayou and in the world around her. On her 100th birthday, we joined friends and family at her little home in Galliano. Dot and I brought her three small poinsettias with white wooden numbers 1-0-0. The next year we gave her the same gift with the numbers 1-0-1. The year after that I purchased the numbers 2, 3, and 4 to add each year to the 1 and 0 she still had. I’m certain I’ll be looking for a number 5 this time next year. In January of this year, at the age of 103, Aline informed us she had decided to move to an assisted living facility in Houma near to where her daughter and grandchildren live. This was another independent move on her part to do what she thought was best for herself. It wasn’t long after she made the move that she was sharing some of her cooking knowledge with the cooks in the assisted living complex. Everyone there knows her and loves her like we do. Now we’re joining her in celebrating her 104th birthday. Aline is sharp as a tack and in good health. She is happy and has made many new friends at her new home. We are always uplifted and invigorated

after a visit with Aline. She is such a joy to be around. We love her zest for life and the positive, never complaining attitude she has had throughout her life. We have learned so much from this wonderful special lady. To those of us who know and love Aline, we wish you a Happy Birthday! You are the star who makes us all twinkle.

Are You OK? From 2-A

“We had one instance where the female participant did not answer her call, her second party received the call which indicated she did not answer. The second party went to the home and discovered the female had fallen out of bed. Upon arrival of Acadian Ambulance Service, the paramedics discovered she had broken her hip. 5 surprising facts about pneumonia

(StatePoint) Pneumonia can strike anywhere and anytime, the American Lung Association reminds us. A serious, potentially life-threatening lung infection, pneumonia is primarily caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi that are transmitted from one person to another. The most common type of bacterial pneumonia is pneumococcal pneumonia. 1. Pneumococcal pneumonia can be serious. If you are 65 or older, your risk of being hospitalized after getting pneumococcal pneumonia is 13 times greater than for younger adults aged 18 - 49, and for those requiring hospitalization, they have an average hospital stay of six days. In severe cases, pneumococcal pneumonia can lead to death. Symptoms typically have an abrupt onset and may include coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain, high fever, excessive sweating and shaking chills. 2. It doesn’t happen only during winter.

Pneumococcal pneumonia is not a cold or the flu; you can get it any time of the year. Although rates of pneumococcal pneumonia tend to increase in the fall and winter months, cold air does not cause pneumonia, including pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumococcal pneumonia can be spread by coughing or close contact with an infected person, no matter the season. 3. Even healthy adults are at increased risk. One of the most important things to know is that for adults, risk increases with age as our immune system weakens and can’t respond as effectively to infection. Which means that otherwise healthy and active adults are at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. 4. Chronic health conditions can also lead to increased risk. Other factors, like your lifestyle and certain chronic health conditions, can also increase your risk. Smoking, alcoholism and certain chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, asthma,

work by teaching the body’s immune system to recognize and defend against harmful viruses or bacteria before getting an infection, and reduce the chance of getting certain infectious diseases. But rates of vaccination among U.S. adults remain low, lagging well behind expert recommendations and federal goals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that all adults 65 years or older receive

pneumococcal vaccination. If you are 65 or older, talk to your doctor to see if you are up to date on your CDC-recommended adult vaccinations, and take a personal risk assessment at Lung.org/pneumococcal, developed by the American Lung Association in partnership with Pfizer. This year, brush up on the signs and risk factors of pneumococcal pneumonia, as well as strategies for prevention, particularly as you age.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Bishop Fabre urged Religious Educators to find new way to reach our youth

The following is a brief summary of Bishop Shelton Fabre’s address to the Religious Educators of our youth. As a Bishop and spiritual father to all the young people of the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese, I have a deep personal longing for their true happiness and eternal salvation. I want us to be grounded in the reality that ultimately any vision for Religious Education Programs, any visions for youth ministry, and any changes to the structures that evangelize our youth are all oriented to salvation of souls. If we are to appreciate the vision that God is leading us, we must be open to this new vision with an open mind and heart: there is an urgency in our mission because an urgency exists regarding salvation. We are facing new and very real challenges in our culture. We can make the case that today secularization has more of an influence on our youth than the Gospel. Presently there is a rejection of a common moral code held by community as a whole. There are complex family issues. All of this is affecting our young people. We notice their decreasing attention span, difficulties in their ability to communicate in healthy ways, a real poverty of deep and meaningful relationships, as well as confusion over many foundational beliefs such as what it means to be human, what it means to be created male and female, and what is true love. Today’s youth are being raised in a culture bombarding them with exposure to many “isms,” each of which offers false promises of fulfillment only to leave us empty and searching for more. Some of these “isms” are: narcissism, consumerism, and relativism, to name only a few. There is an urgency. The situation we are facing with our young people demands that we produce an appropriate response. We must look for new ways to engage our young people. We must find new opportunities that allow them to encounter the love of Jesus personally. We must be ever more creative so that they take steps forward and grow in that relationship. In 1976 Fr. Pedro Arrupe, the Superior General of the Jesuits, gave a talk to the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia. He urged Catholics to fall in love with God. Following the speech, Fr. Arrupe fielded questions from the crowd and one participant listener passively remarked: “Falling in love. That’s great. Now give me something practical.” Fr. Arrupe spontaneously replied: “Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in love in an absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what

will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” We must form the whole person, not merely the mind. While we must have solid intellectual formation, there is also an urgency for more. Merely lecturing or presenting theological concepts no longer work. As we present authentic theological content, we must present this Truth so that we connect it to the real lives of the students. The aim of Religious Education is living in a relationship with the person of Jesus Christ, not merely the transmis-

sion of theological content. We cannot just “cover the material.” We present the material AND the students themselves make connections between the material and their relationship with God. We also must become experts in the students and the content. In the formation of a young person, it is vitally important that we not merely know the content, but that we know the student. We must become intentionally aware of

where each student truly finds themselves on their journey of faith. We must start from this awareness to help each young person take the next step in their relationship with God. Sometimes the journey with a young person can be a slow process that takes much patience and love. I am confident that God will supply us with the assistance of the Holy Spirit as we go forward together, assisting one another in the power of the Holy Spirit.
