Lafourche Parish president to seek re-election W
By Julia Arenstam Daily Comet Staff Writer
Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle says he’s plans to fight for his seat in parish government before his term expires at the end of 2019. Yet, the first-term president is still lacking a right-hand man. On Tuesday, the Parish Council voted 54 against Cantrelle’s latest nomination of Rodney Doucet to fill the vacant position. “We’re getting better,” Cantrelle said. Previous votes on his nominees for parish administrator were 7-2, 7-2 and 4-2 against. In a phone interview Wednesday, Cantrelle laughed when asked

WWII vet on mission to publicize dwindling number of vets
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A World War II veteran is on a mission to travel to all 50 states as part of an effort to raise awareness about the dwindling number of veterans from that war who are still alive. Sidney Walton, of San Diego, met Tuesday with Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards at the Commander’s Palace restaurant. The 99-year-old Walton started his tour in March. As he visits each state, he’s been meeting with governors — 17 so far — and regular people. His son, Paul, who is traveling with him, says his dad always regretted missing an opportunity when he was younger to meet a group of the last surviving Civil War veterans. Walton will turn 100 on Feb. 11 and plans to visit the White House that day. ___
83-year-old Louisiana man receives doctorate degree Friday
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — An 83-year-old Vietnam veteran isn’t sitting quietly in retirement. He’s earned a doctorate degree from Louisiana State University. Johnnie Jones will receive his Ph.D. in human ecology at an LSU graduation ceremony Friday. And the Marine Corps veteran isn’t quitting now that he’s reached the doctorate level. Next up, he says he hopes to go to law school, saying the schoolwork helps to make him the best he can be. Jones started taking LSU correspondence courses while he was deployed in Vietnam. He earned a sociology degree from the University of Hawaii after returning to the United States. Later, he earned a master’s degree in social work from LSU and then went to work for the corrections department, retiring 25 years later as a prison warden. ___ Lotto Numbers for December 12, 2018 07 - 13 - 16 21 - 24 - 40

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana state audit says the state police agency hasn’t been able to provide proof that it spent $2.4 million policing the French Quarter last year. News outlets report the Department of Public Safety disagrees with audit released Wednesday. The agency says $2.4 million in other funding was used to cover French Quarter policing costs until funding designated for that area’s policing became available. State police were allocated $2.4 million for French Quarter policing in 2017 through the New Orleans Public Safety Fund, which is legally required to fund public safety services in the area. Instead of re-designating the funding of previous expenses, state police submitted a single fuel reimbursement request. The audit says the state Legislature’s office can’t determine how funds were spent without proper documentation. ___

Trash thrown throughout: Residents want bear-proof cans
FRANKLIN, La. (AP) — Bleach, household cleaner and bungee cords aren’t stopping bears in a Louisiana parish, so one resident says she has to look out the window every morning to see if one has rummaged through her trash. She also says she’s had to pick up billing and medical information and needles among the litter scattered across lawns and streets. Black bears have been an issue in St. Mary Parish neighborhoods for years, KATCTV reported Wednesday. Centerville resident Jennifer Liner and others in the parish are frustrated with a lack of bear-proof trash cans. But officials say they can’t provide the receptacles until next year and that the issue is seasonal, at least. Liner said she has had to pick up her own and neighbors’ garbage from yards after her morning checks. Parts of St. Mary Parish, south of U.S. Route 90, already have bear-proof cans, but officials say new ones won’t be available until 2020 at the soonest. “I’ve tried bleach to try to mask it with that, I’ve tried Pine-Sol to see if that will work,” Liner said. “First of all, I haven’t made a full decision because y’all shot me down last time. I’m waiting to see what you’re going to do. That’s the bottom line,” he replied. Corey Perrillioux, who was Council Chairman at the time, said that Doucet’s outbursts at a previous meeting were a problem. “If I remember right I had to gavel you about three times because you kept speaking out of turn. That’s what set the tone with a lot of us thinking ‘this guy’s a malcontent. He can’t even follow protocol in a public forum.’ So I‘m glad you are here tonight to address it. But still I kind of get a vibe that you’re kind of combative tonight in the same vein,” said Perrillioux. Doucet said he had the outburst because as a “person of truth” he felt he had to speak up on behalf of the public who could not address an item on the agenda. Bayou Blue Councilman Craig Jaccuzzo said that Doucet’s style of “passion and emotion” can make people become productive and successful, but it can also get individuals passed up. “The key is to funnel those things in a direction that’s always positive. Sometimes we have
to funnel it into a positive manner and know how to put it in check,” said Jaccuzzo. Another differing view between Council members and Doucet was on the value of District Attorney opinions. While most members feel that DA opinions are guidance and should be followed, Doucet said in the future the Council needs to ask the DA to interpret the law and not simply give an opinion. “Ask the District Attorney if his opinion is law and he’ll tell you it’s only his opinion. He needs to tell us what the law is,” said Doucet. After the meeting, Doucet said he felt the Council did not want a “headstrong” person in the position, one who would possibly make changes and tell people what they should be doing. “But, I put it in God’s hands. If God wanted me to have this position the first time, I would have gotten appointed,” he said.

what his plans were for the parish’s no. 2 position. “I’m laughing because it’s so ... so ridiculous,” he said, referring to the four nominations that have been rejected by the Parish Council since February. Cantrelle has 60 days to make another nomination, but the only prospects he offered today were the Pope and Jesus. No interim administrator Cantrelle and his lawyer James Cobb are also appealing a Lafourche Court’s injunction against him and former interim administrator Brent Abadie. Last month, Judge Buddy Larose granted a preliminary injunction a gainst Cantrelle and Abadie, stating that a person may not serve in an interim position after they have been rejected for the permanent job. A hearing originally scheduled for Monday was rescheduled for Jan. 16. While that appeal is pending, Cantrelle said he hasn’t named a new interim administrator. In a previous interview, Abadie said he was transitioning back to his civil service job as risk manager. “I don’t know what to do any more,” he said about the interim job. “I have no clue.” The council also overrode eight of Cantrelle’s 10 budget amendment vetoes Tuesday. For seven of them, Cantrelle proposed alternate funding sources and told council members that if they didn’t override his vetoes, he would file supp l e m e n t a l appropriations to pay for the projects next year, just using different funds. In almost every case, the council over-
rode them anyway. Cantrelle said Wednesday that he still plans to file the supplemental appropriations to ensure the best funding streams for the projects. The parish president’s salary has also been scrutinized this year. The parish president is scheduled to receive a $36,000 raise according to a formula used to calculate the pay. Cantrelle said that increase will go toward his scholarships. Seeking another term Despite the turmoil between himself and the council, Cantrelle said he will seek a second term in next year’s election. He already faces two named opponents, Archie Chaisson, Thibodaux Public Works director and former parish administrator, and current Lafourche Parish Council Chairwoman Luci Sposito. Successfully working with the council was one of Cantrelle’s campaign promises during the 2015 election. He says it’s the only one he hasn’t fulfilled. “My door will be always open for any councilman or anybody in Lafourche Parish,” Cantrelle said during his swearing-in ceremony in 2016. “If we all work together, we can pull the wagon in the same direction. But if we start pulling in different directions, we will never accomplish anything.” Today, Cantrelle took some of the blame for the tension between the two branches of government. “It’s probably partly my fault, and probably other people’s fault,” he said. “I wish we could go back and do it again.” However, Cantrelle says he’s lived up to his other campaign promises, like accomplishing drainage projects, straightening up the permitting department and opening two satellite offices, giving a portion of his salary to local scholarships, instating term limits and opening an early voting site in central Lafourche. The primary election next year will be held on Oct. 12, with signups beginning Aug. 6. If necessary, a runoff will be held Nov. 16. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam @houmatoday.com. Follow her on Twitter at @JuliaArenstam.

Louisiana secretary of state diverted $90K to pay settlement By MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana secretary of state’s office diverted more than $90,000 from computer system improvements to pay its share of a sexual misconduct settlement involving the agency’s former leader, Tom Schedler. Dollars earmarked to upgrade software for business registrations, the state archives, the agency help desk and other systems were stripped. Instead, the money was paid to help end litigation accusing Schedler, a Republican who resigned in May, of sexually harassing a female employee for years. The financing diversion was described in documents obtained by The Associated Press in response to a public records request. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin, Schedler’s top aide who moved into the election chief’s job after the resignation, initially wouldn’t talk about the spending, citing a confidentiality clause in the settlement. When AP obtained the records, Ardoin spokeswoman Brandee Patrick said the money shuffled to pay the harassment settlement didn’t “cut anything to do with cybersecurity,” which Ardoin has described as a priority amid national concerns about voting security and foreign hacking into election systems.
C
The August deal settling the harassment claims against Schedler involved a $167,500 payment to the woman who accused Schedler of misconduct — and no admission of guilt from Schedler. A judge signed paperwork ending the litigation in October. Louisiana taxpayers paid $149,075 of the settlement, plus an additional $35,000 on private attorneys to respond to the lawsuit. Schedler personally paid $18,425. The secretary of state’s office covered $90,450 of the settlement’s price tag, while the rest was paid through the Office of Risk Management, Louisiana’s self-insurer. The sexual harassment lawsuit was filed in February, alleging Schedler harassed the woman for years and punished her when she rebuffed advances. Schedler’s spokeswoman said the pair had a consensual sexual relationship. The woman’s lawyer denied that. Ardoin, a Republican, became secretary of state when Schedler resigned and won a special election Saturday to fill the remaining year of Schedler’s term. In addition to administering elections, the secretary of state oversees Louisiana’s archives, registers businesses in the state and manages museums, such as the Old State Capitol. What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd When we live according to God’s law of love, we are being our true selves
When I was growing up, I used to think that Jesus was the first person to teach us about love. Of course, I later learned that when the Jewish lawyer asked him which was the greatest commandment in the law, he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment, and a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt 22:36-39) Jesus put these two commandments together from two different books of the Old Testament. Jesus taught us that the most powerful and essential element in life is love. Love is our foundation and our destiny. It is where we come from and where we are headed. As St. Paul reminds us, “So faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor. 13:13) Love is who we are. When we do not live according to law of love, we are not being ourselves. When we love, we are being true to ourselves and are acting according to our deepest convictions. We were made after the image and likeness of God. St. John tells us, “God is love.” When we love, we are living according to our divine dignity. We have heard this phrase “created in the

image and likeness of God” so often that it may have lost some of its power. However, if this statement is true, then our family of origin is divine. A loving God created us so we can be a source of love in our world. Thomas Keating once said, “Divine love is compassionate, tender, luminous, totally selfgiving, seeking no reward, unifying everything.” That’s the kind of love we should be seeking for our own lives. Relationships are the fundamental elements of Christianity. Like any relationship, we must cultivate our union with God and keep it alive. God always takes the initiative in dealing with us. St. John reminds us, “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:911) The spiritual writers of the past have always emphasized how God has loved us. This comes through most of their writings: God is the initiator, God is the doer, God is the one who seduces us. It’s all about God’s initiative. In turn we want to return the love in a similar way that God has loved us. It’s not like we have to prove our love for God by doing things. Our job is simply to complete the circuit. The saints experienced this full impact of Divine Love and for the rest of their lives they tried to find ways to return that love through service and worship. They realized that we can never earn God’s love. We only can re-

his work in the oil business and racked up a few more million dollars but he made millions and he desired the power of public office, even the Presidency. This in no way berates him. Somebody has to do the work and Americans and world leaders have lauded his life and success. I don’t believe anyone has said anything bad about him lately on national television and they shouldn’t. His life of incredible work and service is over. He has gone on to his greater reward. No one knows how they will be remembered after their death. Bad people are remembered for their evil deeds. Good people are remembered for their good works. How will you be remembered? Jesus Christ is remembered of course every day in some way. He is celebrated at Christmas, Easter, at church and in our lives of faith and devotion. He is remembered for how He lived, and what He did. He is remembered for what He called us to do in our personal lives of faith. No one has been remembered and worshipped like Jesus Christ. His life was different than most all people who are remembered. He came to serve in every way. He didn’t have any money, fast boats, big houses or political clout. He lived and died to demonstrate
of living that we find ourselves. We want more. The “more” we long for is a deeper relationship with God and others. As we prepare ourselves for the celebration Jesus’ birthday, may we be aware that he was
sent to remind us that we are worthy of honor, dignity and above all, God’s unconditional love. In turn, we are invited to share that love with others, bringing hope, joy and peace to our world.
a loving God. His life mission was to help, seek and save the lost. The bottom line is you will not be remembered like Jesus Christ or even George H.W. Bush. However, you can be remembered for loving people. You can be remembered for being a good mom or dad. You can be remembered for being good to your children and grandchildren. You can be remembered for being good to your parents. You can be remembered for being a good neighbor. You can be remembered for being a good citizen and faithful to your church or synagogue. You can be remembered for your service to your community and your country. Most importantly is to be remembered for
being you. God only made one you. Just be you. Be a good you. Try to be a better you and that is all you can do. Actually the world needs for you to be all that you were created to be. He only made one Jesus and one, “41” and he only made one you. So, be who you are and we all have room to improve. I have my work cut out being me and when we are remembered people will remember us for who we were while we were alive. Therefore, since you are reading this you are still working on how you will be remembered when your time here is through.

Will people remember you after you die? Will anybody even care? How will you be remembered? I can’t recall a more respected, loved and admired human than George H.W. Bush. The love and outpouring of celebrating his life was more than I’ve ever seen. I watched the President Kennedy funeral and recall the national horror and grief associated with his assassination. I remember when Martin Luther King was killed and the outpouring of grief that followed. We can remember these and many dark periods of sadness. President Bush of course lived a long life with many opportunities that few people will ever have. He became the 41st President of the United States. He was a former Congressman, CIA director, millionaire oilman, graduate of Yale, and came from a family who had money and many life achievements. While much has been said about his humility you don’t achieve all he did without being self-serving. It takes some ego to run for public office. If you don’t have a strong ego you can’t pull off all that running for such an office involves. You have to believe in yourself. Granted, Bush could have simply maintained
