Golden Meadow man killed in Thursday morning crash

GOLDEN MEADOW, La. - Shortly before 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning, W Troopers with Troop C began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA 1 at the Golden Meadow flood gate. The crash took the life of 80-yearold Gerald Plaisance. The preliminary investigation revealed Plaisance was traveling south on LA 1 in a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane of LA 1. Plaisance’s vehicle struck a northbound 2007 Freightliner truck being driven by 37-yearold Adrian Echeverria of Cypress, TX. Plaisance was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on See Accident Page 3-A

Over 200 children in Lafourche Parish will celebrate the Christmas season with a new bicycle. Deputies with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office traveled up and down the bayou Thursday, playing Papa Noel for the 25th annual bike giveaway. Spearheaded by Maj. Dean Savoie, the department works throughout the year to collect new or gently used bikes for children. This year, 202 children will receive bikes, Savoie said. “Every child that wants a bike should have a bike,” he said. Most children were still in school as deputies drove around, checking their list twice. But when a child is home to get his or her bike, that’s the greatest sight, Sgt. Kevin Johnson said. While technology changes from year to year or week to week, “a bike is the one thing that’s timeless,” Lt. Brennan Matherne said. The Sheriff’s Office collects bike donations from residents with help from local companies. To qualify, children of any age must be a resident of Lafourche and meet family income requirements. They can receive another bike after three years, often growing out of the first, Savoie said. Every year, this is one of the best weeks for the Sheriff’s Office, like Mardi Gras, Halloween or the Night See Bikes Page 3-A

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them Fear not: for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men.”

Lafourche Correctional Complex grand opening held in Thibodaux

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office hosted a grand opening ceremony for the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on Wednesday, December 19 with over 300 people in attendance for the event. “Today is an historic and monumental day in the Lafourche Parish criminal justice system,” said Sheriff Craig Webre during his remarks at the ceremony. “My staff and I are forever grateful and honored to be part of and witness to what is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity: the grand opening of the new Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex.” The new $40 million facility replaces the Lafourche Parish Detention Center which was built in 1976. The Correctional Complex can house up to 533 inmates, compared to 245 at the existing jail. The Sheriff’s Office currently plans to move inmates from the Detention Center to the new Correctional Complex in January 2019. The facility measures at

approximately 125,000 square feet. Sheriff Webre stated, “While vast in size, we do not subscribe to the old adage, ‘Build it and they will come.’ Instead, the premise we subscribe to is, ‘Build it right, and they won’t come back.’” Captain Cortrell Davis, warden at the current jail and future warden of the new Correctional Complex, was one of several individuals to address those in attendance. “We are not here to celebrate a jail … we are here to celebrate change,” said Captain Davis. The Correctional Complex will focus on reform and rehabilitation. “For far too many years we have cycled people in and out of the revolving door of the jailhouse,” said Sheriff Webre. “Some of these individuals, as a practical matter, are serving a life sentence 30 days or six months at a time.” “This facility is not a jail or a prison,” Webre said.

Serving as tour guide, Leslie Hill with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, points out a few things for the guests who attended the ribbon cutting of the new Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux Wednesday. As a correctional complex, the department’s focus will be on returning a productive citizen to the community. The department already has more than 40 soft skill programs that educate inmates about things like parenting, job interviews and earning high school or higher education credits. Students

from Nicholls will help lead some of these programs in the new facility. As the state and federal governments continue to pass criminal justice and sentencing reforms, Lafourche Parish will work to end the evolving door of the jail, Webre said. See Opening Page 3-A

US adults aren’t getting taller, but still putting on pounds By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — You don’t need to hang the mistletoe higher but you might want to skip the holiday cookies. A new report released Thursday shows U.S. adults aren’t getting any taller but they are still getting fatter. The average U.S. adult is overweight and just a few pounds from obese, thanks to average weight increases in all groups — but particularly whites and Hispanics. Overall, the average height for men actually fell very slightly over the past decade. There was no change for women. One factor may be the shift in the country’s population. There’s a growing number of Mexican-Americans, and that group tends to be a little shorter, said one of the report’s authors, Cynthia Ogden of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The findings come from a 2015-16 health survey that measures height and weight. More than 5,000 U.S. adults took part. CDC records date back to the early 1960s, when the average man was a little over 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed 166 pounds. Now, men are almost 1 inch taller and more than 30 pounds heavier. But today’s average height of 5 feet, 9 inches is about

a tenth of an inch shorter than about a decade ago. The average woman in the early 1960s was 5 feet, 3 inches and 140 pounds. Now, women are a half-inch taller and about 30 pounds heavier, on average. The average height is about the same as it was a decade earlier: 5 feet, 4 inches. Other survey findings: — In the last decade, the average weight of men rose about 2 pounds, to 198. For women, it rose 6 pounds, to nearly 171. — Men have 40-inch waistlines, on average. Women’s waistlines are a little under 39 inches. — The average height of black men and white men has been holding about steady, at a little under 5 feet 10. — Mexican-American and Asian-American men are roughly 3 inches shorter than whites and blacks, on average. There was a similar height gap in women. In 2016, about 18 percent of the nation’s population was Hispanic, up from about 13 percent in 2000, according to U.S. Census figu r e s . Mexican-Americans account for nearly twothirds of the Hispanic population. ___ The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Judge rules Bayou Bridge Pipeline can continue construction

Months after three landowners filed a lawsuit challenging construction of the Bayou Bridge Pipeline, they have an answer. Last week, Judge Keith Comeaux ruled Bayou Bridge Pipeline had the right to seize property under eminent domain, and the project will pay $150 to each of the three landowners involved in the dispute. After obtaining all necessary permits and undergoing a rigorous, multi-year review process, the pipeline is now as much as 90 percent complete and is expected to be in service in the coming months. Despite the benefits the project is creating for local communities, these landowners with ties to nationwide anti-energy protests challenged the pipeline. After attempting to draw deep connections to the property, it was quickly revealed during trial last month that the property owners were more like outsiders with ulterior motives. At least one of the plaintiffs has never even resided in the state of Louisiana, and none of the three had paid taxes or maintained the land in any way. Additionally, one plaintiff

admitted she had never stepped foot onto the property. The ruling on Bayou Bridge is not simply a win for the energy industry, it’s a win for anyone with Louisiana’s best interests in mind. Judge Comeaux’s decision demonstrates that the rule of law will prevail over ill-conceived litigious attempts. Louisianians for Energy looks forward to the safe completion of Bayou Bridge and the great benefits it will play in fueling our state’s energy needs. Louisiana governor: Child care a reasonable campaign expense

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards says he disagrees with the Louisiana ethics board’s decision against allowing campaign funds to pay for a candidate’s child care. The Democratic governor said Wednesday he hopes the Board of Ethics will reconsider its opinion. He says child care is a “reasonable expense” associated with running for office. In November, the ethics board told a Baton Rouge woman running for a state House seat on the 2019 ballot that she cannot use campaign dollars for care of her children when she attends campaign events. Candidate Morgan Lamandre is asking the board to reconsider that decision, which is contrary to a board opinion issued nearly two decades ago. Edwards’ comments came in response to a question about the board ruling during the governor’s monthly radio call-in show. ___

Boat registration increase to begin in 2019

BATON ROUGE, La. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Licensing Section advises all Louisiana boat owners that beginning January 1, 2019, motorboat registration will increase by $9 for each boating length category. Motorboat registration is valid for a three-year period. The additional fees are a result of Act 698 of the 2018 Regular Legislative Session and will be dedicated to LDWF’s Aquatic Plant Control Fund and will be used to fight aquatic plants and invasive aquatic species across the state. For additional information, please contact LDWF’s Licensing Section at 225-765-2898 or visit our website at www.wlf.la.gov.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The company that has failed to end a 14-yearold oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is suing to challenge a Coast Guard official’s order to design and install a new containment system to capture and remove the crude before it forms slicks that often stretch for miles. A federal lawsuit that Taylor Energy Co. filed Thursday in New Orleans asks the court to throw out Coast Guard Capt. Kristi Luttrell’s Oct. 23 administrative order. The suit claims the Coast Guard’s actions ignored “well-verified scientific conclusions” and were taken in response to “adverse publicity.” Government lawyers recently disclosed a new estimate that approximately 10,500 to 29,400 gallons of oil is leaking daily from the site where a Taylor Energy-owned platform toppled during Hurricane Ivan in 2004. ___

Bayou Country Superfest heads to Baton Rouge in 2019

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Organizers of the Bayou Country Superfest say the festival is leaving behind the Superdome in New Orleans and returning to Baton Rouge next year. News outlets report the organizers announced Thursday that the 10th anniversary show of the Memorial Day weekend country music festival will be held at LSU’s Tiger Stadium. The festival launched at that stadium in 2010 and moved to New Orleans last year while the stadium underwent renovations. Superdome general manager Alan Freeman says the event had two successful years in New Orleans, but it’s the right time for it to return home. The 2017 show marked the festival’s third year of declining attendance, and the event scaled back to a single night this year. The festival will resume its two-night schedule in Baton Rouge.

Nicholls offers new scholarship for combat veterans

The Nicholls State University Office of Veteran Affairs and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association announced the creation of a new scholarship to help combat veterans returning to civilian life. The CVMA 6-4 Veteran Scholarship will award $500 to a student once per semester beginning this spring. Recipients must be an honorably discharged combat veteran who is at least a sophomore fulltime student with a minimum 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is named for the CVMA South Louisiana Chapter. “The most important thing about this donation is that it’s an example of veterans taking

care of other veterans,” Nicholls Veterans Coordinator Gilberto Burbante said. “In the veteran community, we say that we always take care of our own, and what better example than this. This is the CVMA’s way of showing that they have our back, and this money will go a long way for our veterans.” Formed in 2001, the CVMA is comprised of motorcycle-riding veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. With members from all 50 states, their mission is to support and defend veterans who served their country and fought for our freedoms. “We just want to be able to give back to our

veteran community and make sure the guys returning home from combat theater who are trying to make something of themselves are afforded every opportunity possible,” CMVA member and Navy veteran John Bruner said. “Coming back to school can be a make or break opportunity. A lot of guys coming back home have seen things and may have some issues that if compounded by financial burden can lead them down a darker path. We want to do anything we can to divert that in a positive direction.” For more information, visit nicholls.edu/ financial-aid/scholar ships.

illegal drug users and people who are homeless, jailed or in transient housing. A national advisory committee voted in October to recommend routine vaccinations for homeless people. Most of Louisiana’s patients have used illegal drugs or been in contact with someone else who had the disease, Kanter said. The Office of Public Health has bought 3,000 doses of vaccine, plans to buy 1,600 more and is working with partner organizations to reach homeless people and drug users, according to a statement from the Louisiana Department of Health. The department said five to 10 cases have been reported in Morehouse Parish, with fewer than five in neighboring Ouachita Parish, according to the department’s website. East and West Baton Rouge parishes also have reported fewer than five each, along with neighboring Pointe Coupee, Ascension and Livingston parishes. New Orleans and St. Tammany parishes also reported fewer than five each, as have Allen Parish in southwest Louisiana and Lafayette Parish in Cajun country. The illness is spread by eating or drinking something that’s contaminated, during sex or

through close contact such as living with an infected person. It can make people sick for weeks, even months. The CDC said in October that about 74 people had died and more than 4,300 have been hospitalized. Some infected people never show symptoms, which can include nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, feeling tired, fever, loss of appetite, yellow-

ing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale-colored feces and joint pain. “In the New Orleans area, we have a large homeless encampment and certainly opioid use,” said Kanter, who also is regional medical director in the New Orleans area. “We certainly have risk factors in place for a larger epidemic. We owe it upon ourselves to be as proactive as possible.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s Department of Health has declared an outbreak of hepatitis A, hoping to keep numbers low for the highly contagious liver disease. Twenty-five of the 28 cases reported this year are counted in the outbreak, said Dr. Joe Kanter, the assistant state health officer. “Compared to what some other states are experiencing, we’re quite fortunate and want to keep it that way,” Kanter said Tuesday, noting that Kentucky is reporting 3,122 cases, Tennessee 561, Florida 413 and Arkansas 217. Arkansas, California, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and West Virginia also have reported outbreaks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From January 2017 to October 2018, 12 states had reported more than 7,500 infections, it said in October. “We see a handful of hepatitis A cases every year,” Kanter said. “What has made this year different is the increased number, and the number specifically linked to outbreaks in the Baton Rouge area and the Morehouse Parish area.” Kanter said officials hope to convince people most at risk to get vaccinated, and want to best coordinate federal, state and community resources to fight the disease. “It’s easily preventable; the vaccine is great,” Kanter said. What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The candy cane and the Ten Commandments can teach us the true meaning of Christmas

The traditional Christmas candy cane was first introduced by a choir director to teach children (and adults) the true meaning of Christmas. Its interpretation has evolved over the centuries but it is still a powerful symbol for “The Reason for the Season.” The following is the traditional explanation for the “J” shaped white candy with red stripes. The hard candy reminds us that Jesus is our rock. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge.” (Psalm 18:2) The cane shape reminds us of a shepherd’s staff and the shepherds that came to worship Jesus. It also reminds us of how Jesus came into the world to be our shepherd. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11) The upside-down candy cane forms the letter “J” and reminds us of the name of Jesus that means “God saves.” (Matt 1:21) The peppermint flavor reminds us of the gift of spices from the Wise Men. “Opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matt 2:11) The white candy reminds us of purity and holiness. It recalls the virgin birth of Christ, the sinless life of Christ and the holy life that Jesus wants his people to live. “Be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16) The wide band of red reminds us that Jesus became a real flesh and blood human being and spilled his blood to save his people. “Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.” (1 John 4:2) The three red stripes remind us of the lashes Jesus received when he suffered for us and ultimately bore our sins that we might be healed. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross … By his wounds you have been healed.” (Peter 2:24-25) Another interpretation of the three stripes: they stand for the God of Love – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matt. 28: 19) The following are the “Ten Commandments for Christmas” by an unknown author. 1. You shall not leave “Christ” out of Christmas in spirit or spelling, like “Xmas.” Although in Greek “X” is

our “CH,” to most minds “X” stands an algebraic unknown. 2. You shall not value gifts by their cost, for many will signify a love that is more blessed and beautiful than silver or gold. 3. You shall give your very self with your gifts. Your love, your personality, and your service will increase the value of your gifts a hundred fold and the recipients will treasure them forever. 4. You shall not let Santa Claus replace Christ, thus robbing the day of its spiritual reality. 5. You shall show consideration to the salespersons, the mail carriers, and other Christmas workers. 6. You shall not neglect your church. The

Christmas services highlight the true meaning of the season for you, your family, and your friends. 7. You shall not neglect the needy. Share your blessings with those who will go hungry and cold and are in need of your generosity. 8. You shall be like a little child. Jesus said, “I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” (Lk 18:17) 9. You shall prepare your inner self for Christmas. Don’t spend so much time and money on gifts that you neglect your mortal soul. 10. You shall give your heart to Christ. Let Jesus be at the top of your Christmas list. May you and your family have a blessed Christmas!
