Sheriff’s Office to offer public jail tours By Dan Copp Daily Comet Staff Writer
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is giving the public an opportunity in January to see its newly completed jail. Several public officials have already toured the $40 million Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex during its grand opening on Dec. 19, and now residents will have a chance to walk through the facility. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering three public jail tours beginning at 2 p.m. Jan. 6. The second tour will be conducted at 6 p.m. Jan. 7, and the third is planned for 6 p.m. Jan. 8. Registration is required, and the deadline to register is 5 p.m. Jan. 4. Construction of the 118,095-square-foot structure at La. 3185 and Veterans Boulevard near Thibodaux began in 2016 after parish residents in 2014 approved a 0.2 percent sales tax for the project. Inmates will be moved from the parish jail just across the road in about three weeks, the Sheriff’s Office said. Originally built in 1976, the current facility holds about 245 inmates. WASHINGTON (AP) — Christmas has come and gone but the partial government shutdown is just getting started. Wednesday brought the first full business day after several government departments and agencies closed up over the weekend due to a budgetary stalemate between President Donald Trump and Congress. And there is no end in sight. So far, the public and federal workers have largely been spared inconvenience and hardship because government is closed on weekends and federal employees were excused from work on Christmas Eve and Christmas, a federal holiday. The shutdown began at midnight December 21. Trump said Tuesday that the closed parts of the government will remain that way until Democrats agree to wall off the U.S.Mexico border to deter criminal elements. He said he’s open to calling the wall something else as long as he ends up with an actual wall. Asked when the government would reopen fully, Trump said he couldn’t say. “I can’t tell you when the government’s going to be open. I can tell you it’s not going to be open until we have a wall or fence, whatever they’d like to call it,” Trump said, referring to Democrats who staunchly oppose walling off the border. “I’ll call it whatever they want, but it’s all the same thing,” he told reporters after participating in a holiday video conference with representatives from all five branches of the See Shutdown Page 3-A

Jail Tours From 1-A
The facility will provide education on job interviews, parenting and other training to try to help inmates become productive citizens. The department provides opportunities for inmates to earn high school or higher education credits, the Sheriff’s Office said. Students from Nicholls State University will help lead some of these programs in the new facility. Lafourche sheriff’s Lt. Brennan Matherne said the jail tours will help highlight how the new facility will operate. “This is certainly an opportunity for the public to see their tax dollars at work,” Matherne said. “This is Sheriff Craig Webre’s vision that he presented to the voters in 2014, and it has been realized. Citizens now have the opportunity to see what the future of corrections looks like for Lafourche Parish. We understand some people may never want to see the inside of a ‘jail,’ but we encourage citizens to come see what we intend to accomplish to provide a better quality of life for all residents. We especially challenge those who may have negative thoughts about the new facility, rehabilitation or corrections in general to come and see it firsthand. Give us an opportunity to show you a new perspective.” If you’re interested in a jail tour, contact Sgt. Karyn Dardar at 860-7575. Attendees need to submit their names, phone numbers and the names of other persons attending the tour. Identification will be required during the tour, which is for those 17 and older. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Dan Copp can be reached at 857-7639 or at dan.copp@houmatoday.co m. Coast Guard rescues 6 from disabled boat
MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) — The Coast Guard says a helicopter crew rescued two adults and four children early Christmas Eve from a disabled bass boat in Louisiana. A Coast Guard news release says the 16-foot bass boat was in water too shallow for a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office rescue boat to reach. The sheriff’s office reported at 12:50 a.m. Monday that the boat was in trouble in the Atchafalaya Bay near Morgan City, about 70 miles from New Orleans. A Coast Guard news release says a helicopter was in the air at New Orleans 25 minutes later and reached the scene at 2:30 a.m. All six people were hoisted into the helicopter, and were at the airport in nearby Patterson before 4 a.m. ___
Woman in active labor crosses stage to graduate college
ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A woman in active labor crossed the stage to graduate from college in Louisiana. The Daily Advertiser reports 31-year-old Anshonarial Greenhouse was in active labor during Louisiana State University of Alexandria’s fall commencement ceremony Dec. 13. The Marksville native crossed the stage with a little help and received her bachelor’s in business administration, with a concentration in accounting. Then she headed to a hospital, where she’d spent much of her final semester. Greenhouse had begun having contractions at 25 weeks, too early to give birth. She’d received medicine to stop the early contractions. But she wanted to be with her fellow accounting graduates. One of those was Greenhouse’s mother. On Saturday, Greenhouse had a healthy baby boy, Zaire. His birthday is a day before her own. Information from: The Advertiser, http://www.theadvertiser.com

A Happy New Year By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist
A Happy New Year is on the agenda for most people. Arrive at 2020 alive. Another full year of life will give you the opportunity you desire to pursue happiness and fulfillment. You can’t achieve anything in this world if you are dead. Think about driving a bit slower, eating healthier, some daily exercise and monitoring your health. The reality of life is that at some time and in some way each of our lives will end. Be mindful of health and taking care of yourself in 2019. Make a couple of friends in 2019. Too many close friends can be a lot of work but too many Americans are isolated and lonely. My wife and I spent almost two hours visiting people in a local nursing home on Christmas Eve. I played the violin for different people in their rooms and then the dining room. Everyone was very quiet and no one seemed to have any visitors during our visit. I felt the heaviness of their loneliness on Christmas Eve. People come and

people go in this life however be open to building a couple of friendships with people that you might visit with occasionally. A good life consists of having some good people you can talk to. Have something to do. If you are going to school, or working a job or raising a family you have plenty to do. Some people are trying to do all three and it’s more than enough. Everybody needs a constructive day. Have something that you need to do. Have something to look forward to and something to occupy your time. You need to feel like your life counts for something and it’s up to you to make it count. Create your life. Come up with something to do that is meaningful to you. Be smart about your money. Make some. Give some away. Save some and spend some. You can’t take any of it with you so you should try to enjoy whatever income you have. How-
ever, you might live longer than you think. A good friend of mine told me he would run out of money at age 90. He was 89 and concerned. He lived to 93. He had Social Security but his income dramatically dropped his last three years. We never know about our longevity but try to save and spend in balance. Seek wisdom. Pray, meditate, seek the wisdom of God and smart people. Make sure the people you consult know what they are talking about but listen and learn. We are never too old to learn. So dear reader, Happy New Year to you. May 2019 be the best year of your life. It won’t necessarily be easy or free from aggravation or pain but I hope you will have peace and joy throughout all the events and circumstances of your life. Keep this in mind, your happiness will begin and end in you. Happiness is an inside job and 2019 is now all before you. Contact him at GMollette@aol.com. What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The fourth wise man’s gifts were accepted by Jesus on the road to Calvary
Each Christmas we tell the story of the wise men from the East who made their way to Bethlehem to worship the newborn king and laid their treasures at his feet. Henry Van Dyke tells us about another wise man who also followed the star. He life long journey brought him to Bethlehem and beyond. He finally found the king in a different way. His name was Artaban. Artaban lived in Persia and was a man of great wealth, great learning and great faith. He had searched the scriptures to find the time when the Savior should be born. Artaban and his companions knew that a new star would appear and they agreed that he would watch from Persia and the others would observe the sky from Babylon. Artaban told his friends at his home, “My three champions are watching at the ancient temple in Babylon and I am watching here. If the star appears, they will wait ten days for me.
Then we will all set out together for Jerusalem. I believe the sign will come tonight. I have made preparations for the journey by selling all of my possessions and have bought these three jewels – a sapphire, a ruby, and a pearl. I intend to present them as my tribute to the king.” Then one of his friends said, “Artaban, no King will ever rise from the broken race of Israel. You will only be chasing shadows.” They all bid Artaban farewell. Artaban put his jewels back into his saddlebag and went out on the roof to take up his vigil of watching the night sky. As Jupiter and Saturn rolled together like drops of glowing flame about to blend into one, a bright blue spark was born out of the darkness beneath them, rounding itself with purple splendor into a crimson sphere. He got on his horse and began his journey. However, when he got to the desert, he had to use one of his jewels to buy a camel. This delay caused him to miss the others. When he reached Bethlehem, he found out that the young family had gone to Egypt. Artaban, followed the king to Egypt, looking everywhere for traces of the little family. In Alexandria, a Rabbi told him to seek the king not among the rich but among the poor. He passed through
countries where famine covered the land, and the poor were crying for bread. He made his dwelling in plaguestricken cities where the sick were languishing in misery. He visited the oppressed and the afflicted in the subterranean prisons. He searched the crowded slave-markets. Though he found no one to worship, he found many to serve. As the years passed, he fed the hungry, clothed the naked, healed the sick and comforted the captive. He had used all his jewels that he was saving for the king to respond to those in need. Thirty-three years had now passed away since Artaban began his pilgrimage. His hair was now pure white. He knew his life was near the end but he was still desperate with hope to find the king. He had come at last to Jerusalem. It was Passover and the city was filled with strangers. A large crowd gathered and Artaban asked what was going on. Someone answered, “We are going to the execution of two robbers and another called Jesus of Nazareth, who has done many wonderful works. The priests and elders said that he must die, because he claims to be the Son of God. Pilate condemned him to the cross, because he said that he was the ‘King of the Jews.’”
These familiar words fell upon the tired heart of Artaban. They had led him for 33-years over land and sea. Now that he found the king, he

military stationed in Alaska, Bahrain, Guam and Qatar. Trump argued that drug flows and human trafficking can only be stopped by a wall. “We can’t do it without a barrier. We can’t do it without a wall,” he said. “The only way you’re going to do it is to have a physical barrier, meaning a wall. And if you don’t have that then we’re just not opening” the government. Democrats oppose spending money on a wall, preferring instead to pump the dollars into fencing, technology and other means of controlling access to the border. Trump argued that Democrats oppose a wall only because he is for one. The stalemate over how much to spend and how to spend it caused the partial government shutdown that began Dec. 22 following a lapse in funding for departments and agencies that make up about 25 percent of the government. Some 800,000 government workers are affected. Many are on the job but must wait until after the shutdown to be paid again. Trump claimed that many of these workers “have said to me and communicated, ‘stay out until you get the funding for the wall.’ These federal workers want the wall. The only one that doesn’t want the wall are the Democrats.” Trump didn’t say how he’s hearing from
