Parish president changes nominee for administrator By Julia Arenstam Daily Comet Staff Writer
Lafourche Parish President Jimmy W Cantrelle has changed the person he’s Rodney nominating to Doucet serve as parish administrator. After first nominating Tommy Lasseigne for the position last week, Cantrelle announced Monday that he was changing the nomination to Rodney Doucet. “I don’t know. ... It’s just a guessing game; I didn’t know who would approve,” Cantrelle said about the change. The decision to change was not based on any criticism from the council, he said. Cantrelle previously nominated Doucet for the position in early April, and he was rejected by the

Airport improvements projects to cause temporary delays in coming months
The Greater Lafourche Port Commission (GLPC) would like to make those traveling near the South Lafourche Leonard J. Miller, Jr. Airport in Galliano aware of ongoing and upcoming improvement projects that will cause a series of temporary single lane closures through March, 2019. These projects include one for Airport Culvert Improvements and the other addressing Airport Entrance Road Improvements. The Airport Culvert Improvements being made will replace a pair of aging galvanized drainage pipes (with a concrete one) that pass underneath the main drainage canal of Airport Road near NRCS and airport maintenance facilities. Local vendors and businesses will be in full holiday spirit, rolling out the red carpet for shoppers this Sunday as the second annual Holiday Mingle and Jingle (HM&J) gets underway beginning at 10 a.m. at Joe’s Septic Contractors. The market, which is an annual fundraiser put on by Trixy Boudreaux, is sponsored by the Shooting Da Crap nonprofit organization with proceeds benefiting Give Kids the World and The Center for Pediatric Therapy Scholarship Fund. With this year’s Jingle boasting more than 60 vendors, kid fun stations, and plate lunches, Boudreaux knows it is another excellent opportunity to raise even more funds while providing a unique and festive shopping experience for patrons. We spoke with Trixy who explained how HM&J came to life in 2017 when the holiday market idea first came to her. “Last year’s event was planned in 12 days. It came to my mind, and I try my best to be still and listen to God’s callings.” Boudreaux understands that even in the busy life they live, it’s important to give back to the community that has been so good to them and the HM&J allows her to do just that! “My market is a branch of the SDA Clay Shooting event held in the spring, and although all are welcomed, the clay tournament mostly involves men. So, I knew that with this event I could get more kids and women involved, and still include men as another opportunity to raise money for our nonprofit organization,” Trixy further explained.
project is set to begin in late December with an expected 60-day completion time. Projected cost for the project is $484,921. The Airport Entrance Road Improvements project is already underway with a 90-day completion schedule that will see the contractor rerouting existing drainage and widening of Airport Road where it intersects with Highway 308. This reconfiguration will result in a left and right turn lane. Projected project cost is $1,174,829. As construction progresses, expect minimal delays and spots of single-lane

In 2007, Rouses acquired 17 stores from the A&P chain, effectively doubling its number of locations at the time. Since then, it has expanded rapidly, including adding locations formerly operated by Winn-Dixie, Belle Foods and LeBlanc’s Food Stores. “We will take great care of these stores and their customers,” Rouses CEO Donny Rouse said in a press release. “I am excited to welcome Frank’s associates. I know they will appreciate the commitment we make to our team members and the communities we serve.”

Since 2011 the Boudreaux family has raised $190,000 between the SDC and HM&J events, directly benefiting GKTW and CPT. “These children’s charities are very dear to our hearts. We are part of the Mickey Maniacs that wholeheartedly support these organizations. GKTW helps last wish children and CPT was also chosen because we know that therapy services are very important for children with needs,” stated Boudreaux. “Starting the CPT scholarship fund for qualified families helps numerous children yearly even to have or continue services after insurance runs out. Changing and making a difference in these kids’ life is ultimately our goal in raising the money,” Trixy added. Boudreaux is adding a toy drive this year and is asking community members to consider donating a wrapped or unwrapped toy which can be dropped off at any time during the event. Toy donations will benefit children in need from Lockport to Golden Meadow. Trixy would like to stress welcoming the community to come and enjoy a day of festive family fun and shopping. Community residents will surely delight in the diverse selection of gift ideas with so many vendors on site! Shoppers are sure to find something special for everyone on their list. Vendors will showcase all types of arts and crafts, custom-made wooden items, sweets and gourmet food items of all sorts, baby items, wall hangings, wreaths, vinyl accessories, kids clothing, ladies boutiques, homemade bath products - salts, soaps, bath bombs, homemade candles, handmade jewelry, and wide variety of other items. Trixy is passionate about shopping locally. “Our community is small, and we have so much talent and passion in our area. It’s important to shop locally because we want to see our fellow neighbors succeed in things they feel so passionate about and love to do. Our community is truly amazing.” Be sure and bring the kids by Santa’s workshop which includes pictures with Santa, letters to Santa, a reindeer food station, elf station, and picture prop areas. There is also a Winter Wonderland for kids to enjoy while parents shop and includes a jump house and various craft stations! Over fifty door prizes will be up for grabs with a value of $25 each, which have been generously donated by vendors and community.
“Every person that enters my market with their $3 entry donation (16 and older) will receive a ticket for a chance to win a door prize. Door prizes are awarded to winners throughout the day. Children 15 and under are free to enter,” said Boudreaux. “Our community has been so supportive to our events even in our economic downfall. It truly shows the character of the people in our community, and my husband Chad and I are forever grateful to everyone who supports our events in every way. God Bless everyone,” Trixy stated. Boudreaux would like to give a special thanks to her husband Chad for supporting her vision and helping make this event a success. “We are a wonderful team,” added Boudreaux. presented to the council as an administrator nominee, he has served in the interim position twice. The council removed Lasseigne from the interim position in August. Cantrelle later placed parish risk manager Brent Abadie in the interim position and nominated him for the permanent job. That, too, was voted down by the council and has led to a legal dispute with the Lafourche District Attorney’s Office. “The comment was made that I didn’t get qualified people. I don’t know how you get more qualified than Brent and Tommy,” Cantrelle said. “This guy (Doucet) is super qualified too.” Cantrelle said he did not advertise for the position because his term in office expires in January 2020, just more than a year away. “Who’s going to leave a job for a one-year job?” Cantrelle said. Doucet served as a Lafourche Parish councilman for District 8 from 2008-12. He unsuccessfully ran for parish president against former Parish President Charlotte Randolph, Cantrelle and Tommy Lasseigne in 2011. Because of his experience in parish government, Cantrelle said, Doucet would be able to handle the pressure of the job. Doucet was not present at his last nomination hearing because he was out of town, Cantrelle said. After criticism from the council about Doucet’s absence, Cantrelle said he would ask Doucet to attend the Dec. 11 meeting. The Dec. 11 meeting could be the last council meeting of the year. The council will vote then whether to hold a second meeting or cancel it due to the holidays.

Former Louisiana Gov. Blanco: ‘no escape’ from her cancer
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco says there’s “no escape” from the incurable cancer that has spread throughout her body. News outlets report Blanco was honored Wednesday by the Council for a Better Louisiana and gave what felt like a farewell speech. Blanco is the state’s first elected woman governor and served from 2004 to 2008. She was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2011, and the disease reappeared during a checkup in 2017. Blanco is a devout Catholic and says she’s made peace with the disease. She spoke while being honored by the organization for her work in improving education in Louisiana. She says education is the best way to raise people out of the poverty plaguing Louisiana, which has ranked low in health, income and quality of life surveys.

JOHN DONALD WERNER, JR.
John Donald Werner, Jr., “Coach Don,” 74, passed away at his home on Friday, November 30, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deborah Werner; his son, John Werner and wife Sherling; his daughter, Rebecca Johnson and husband Emanuel; grandchildren, Camille and Claire Loupe and Leah and Micah Werner; and four step grandsons. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Rita Werner, and father and mother-in-law, Louis and Earline Zeringue. The family will have a private service in his honor at a later date. Don will always be remembered for his love for his family, his love for golf and Sugarland Country Club, and his love for coaching. He was especially proud to be able to assist in coaching his granddaughter’s travel softball team this past year. He was the former CEO of Lady of the Sea Hospital (retired in 2013). He was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed. What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Listening to others in a non-judgmental way takes hard work on many levels
Has anyone ever yelled at you and said, “You’re not listening to me! Or sometimes I wonder whether God yells at us with the same message, “You’re not listening to me! Listening to others is so important yet it takes a lot of work. The following reflection is called “Please Listen. The author is Leo Buscaglia. I will use paragraphs from the poem and add my own insights. “When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked. We all have a tendency to want to “fix people. If someone is pouring out their heart to you, we may want to ease their pain or show
them possible solutions to their difficulties. However, that’s not want they want or need. They want someone to listen to them without judging them. They want an understanding heart, not a head with all the solutions. “When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings. Again, when we listen with our hearts and not our heads, we can emphasize with another’s feeling. Feelings and emotions are neither good nor bad. They are an expression of how we feel at a certain time. Feelings can come and go. Dismissing another person’s feeling is to disregard that person. It’s important to take everyone where they are. “When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem. Listening is hard work because we want to give our opinion and thoughts to help “solve the problem. However, listening is listening. God gave us two ears
and one mouth so we can listen more and talk less. (We usually do the opposite). Again, listening and fixing are two different things. People want to be understood, not fixed. “I am not helpless. Maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless. When you do something for me that I canand need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy. Most people have the answers to their problems within themselves. What they are looking for is not some “guru who has all the answers to life’s problems. They want a nonjudgmental person who will allow them to vent their frustrations so they can get out the feelings harboring within. Once spoken, the individual can usually see what needs to be done. “But when you accept as a simple fact that I feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can stop trying to convince you and get about this business of understanding what’s behind this irrational feeling. The relationship we have with ourselves is most important. We all have various fears and secrets from the past that we carry around with us. We have all
made mistakes that we may consider shameful or embarrassing. It’s important that we live in the present, not the past. God forgives us. We have to forgive ourselves. A non-judgmental person can help us do this.
