Louisiana releasing next month’s food stamp aid by March 2
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana is handing out all of next W month’s food stamp aid by March 2. Some recipients will be receiving the assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program earlier than normal. But the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services announced Tuesday that it was adjusting the March aid schedule. That’s because the agency handed out February food stamps early, doling them out in January because of the partial federal government shutdown. The children and family services department says it’s adjusting the March schedule to See Food Stamps Page 3-A

Danos to acquire Shamrock Energy Solutions
Danos announced this week that it has reached a tentative agreement to acquire the assets and business of Shamrock Energy Solutions, a privately held 22-year-old oilfield service company,
based out of Houma, Louisiana. The deal is expected to be effective in March, 2019, and will increase the number of Danos employees by nearly 50 percent, from 2,200 to 3,200. The closing is subject to certain remaining contingencies. “There are a lot of synergies between the companies,” said Danos owner and executive Eric Danos. “Both are privately owned, Louisiana-based and have a similar customer-centric, values-based approach to business.” The acquisiPictured left to right is Danos owner and executive Eric Danos, Shamrock owner and president Jeff Trahan, and Danos owner and tion will expand Danos’ portfolio executive Paul Danos.

Danos added, “This strategic investment allows Danos to better meet our customers’ needs through expansion of craftsmen, geographies served and service lines offered.” Danos will retain Shamrock’s team of over 1,000 employees, making it one of the largest service providers in the marketplace. “Danos exemplifies many of the same family-oriented values we’ve established at Shamrock,” said Shamrock Owner and President Jeff Trahan. “I’m excited to see how the integration of Shamrock’s business into Danos builds upon the foundation of excellence we’ve established when I purchased the business in 2008.”

Police: Suspect got stuck in mud trying to flee robbery
THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Police in Louisiana say a man robbed someone he met on a dating website but got stuck in the mud as he tried to flee the scene. The Houma Courier reports Thibodaux police say 25-year-old Kareem Acker was arrested Tuesday on charges including armed robbery. Police say Acker forced the victim out of his car at gunpoint and tried to drive away from responding officers, but
the car got stuck. Police say he then tried to hide a loaded gun in the mud after he was ordered out of the car. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports New Orleans police are investigating a similar case in which an unidentified suspect stole the wallet of a woman he met on a dating app. ___
Gov reveals plan to outfit every college with veteran center
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and other state leaders have announced a plan to put a veteran center on every college campus in the state by fall 2019. The Advocate reports the program announced Wednesday to help veterans navigate
campus life will cost about $520,000 annually. State officials say federal grants are expected to cover about $320,000 of the LaVetCorps program costs, with the Department of Veterans Affairs expected to contribute about $200,000. The newspaper says Louisiana gets more than $185 million annually from G.I. Bill funding. It says about 8,300 Louisiana college students are veterans and most are first-generation students. Louisiana Community and Technical College System, LSU System, Southern University System, University of Louisiana System and Xavier University in New Orleans are expected to take part. Sales Taxes From 1-A
“We have continued to witness an increase in trucks on our highways and are hopeful that this activity only adds to the sales tax collection in 2019 and beyond,” Kiger said. “We look forward to more jobs and opportunities and growth on the horizon.” The last time the parish broke $80 million was in 2014 when it collected about $83.2 million. Since the economic downturn, Lafourche sales tax collections reached a low of $72.4 million in 2017. Parish sales tax rates vary from 4.65 to 5.4 percent. Monthly collections average $6.7 million. “As always, it is our hope to see collections continue to grow — allowing additional dollars for infrastructure, education and tourism throughout our parish,” Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce CEO Tammy Ledet said. Terrebonne’s lowest point in recent years was $98.5 million in 2010. The sales tax numbers are starting to match up with other economic indicators, said Matt Rookard, Terrebonne Economic Development Authority CEO. Local unemployment numbers started to stabilize at the end of 2018, signaling the beginning of the slow recovery cycle, he said. “The increased sales tax revenue is a good sign that our economy is going in a positive direction,” said Nicol Blanchard, Houma Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce CEO. “Consumers are enjoying the low gas prices allowing them to have more spendable income while the oil and gas industry becomes more efficient and optimistic when planning for the future.
The chamber is encouraged by this growth and hopes that it continues.” In the future, 2017 will probably be known as one of the toughest economic years as the area stayed at the bottom of the down cycle, Rookard said. “We were at the bottom and stayed there for a significant time,” Rookard said. “I do think there’s a recovery coming.” As the job market stabilizes, consumer confidence will increase, and that drives sales taxes, he said. As TEDA continues to look for new development opportunities, companies are pivoting from getting by to planning for growth. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam@houmatoday.com. HOUMA, La. (AP) — The Krewe of Tradition is working to bring Mardi Gras costumes back into parade crowds in a south-central Louisiana city, with a four-hour costume-making workshop Sunday at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum in Houma. “I grew up in Houma, and my mom would make us costumes for us to go watch the parade,” said founding member Andrea Dupree told The Courier. “My mom remembered in the 50s and 60s that everyone would get into costume. We thought that offering people an opportunity to learn easy things about making their own costumes would maybe encourage more people to try it out.” Lance Brown, the krewe’s 2019 king, will lead the workshop. He says some materials and tools will be provided, but people should also bring their own materials and ideas. Brown says he’ll bring costumes he has made and
talk a bit about history. Children up to age 15 will be admitted free, but must be accompanied by an adult. Otherwise, admission is $5 per person. The workshop starts at 10 a.m. Support from the Louisiana Folklore Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is helping to put on the workshop ahead of Mardi Gras, which this year will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 5. The krewe does not have a full parade, but it does a small split parade on Mardi Gras, ending with a costume contest at Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne. “We’re trying to bring back the real handmade, community sort of feeling back to Houma,” Dupree said. ___

Louisiana’s flu season: Severe, but not as bad as last year
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana is having a severe flu season, with New Orleans and three nearby parishes getting the worst of it so far. More than 8 percent of patients are reporting flu-like symptoms to doctors statewide, making it a severe season, Frank Welch, medical director for the Louisiana Department of Health’s immunization program told The New Orleans Advocate. He said the figure is above 10 percent in the region made up of Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson parishes. Those patients included Jillian Archer, her husband and their 2-year-old daughter. Archer said she had hoped her daughter’s fever was just a cold, but then all three came down with aches, fever, sore throats and chills. Archer said she and her husband had both had flu shots and were sick for only about a day, but their toddler — who hadn’t — was out of daycare for 2½ weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend flu vaccinations for anyone at least 6 months old. Welch said it’s not too late to get the shot. Outside the immediate New Orleans area, Louisiana’s next-highest number for reports of flu-like illnesses are in northwest, central, and southeast Louisiana, where 5 to 10 percent of all patients reported them, according to a
state report for the week ending Feb. 2. That report, the most recent available, showed 2 to 5 percent of all patients reporting such symptoms in other parts of the state. Welch said the season is not likely to get much worse and is much less active than last year’s, which he described as the worst he’d ever seen. At its height, around 12 percent of people who went to the doctor last year had flu-like symptoms, Welch said, calling that number “just terrible.” The two types of flu making up the highest numbers of reports are in this year’s vaccine, he said. His advice: If you haven’t had this year’s vaccination, do so, because it will make recovery faster if you do get the virus. And, he said, “If you think you have the flu, stay home.” ___ Information from: The New Orleans Advocate, http://www.neworleansadvocate.com

Lady Tarpons cruise into Round of 16
Sunday, February 17, 2019 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Gazette Sports Reports
The South Lafourche girls’ basketball team is young, far less experienced than in years past. Just a handful of the team’s players significantly contributed to last year’s run to the Top 28 and the team plays four freshmen and several underclassmen in many varsity games. So it’s only natural that a young team would have a case of the jitters early in Thursday night’s Class 4A State Playoff opening-round game between the Lady Tarpons and Carencro. But when those nerves calmed and the team settled into the game, goodness, what a show! South Lafourche rolled past Carencro 5731 on Thursday night, clinching a spot in the second-round of the Class 4A State Playoffs. The Lady Tarpons and Lady Bears were gridlocked in a 4-all tie midway through the first quarter when the light switch flipped, first with a 3-pointer from freshman Ava Pitre and then an offensive onslaught, a 16-2 run over four minutes capped by a buzzerbeater 3-pointer by junior Makayla Bynum to put the team up 20-6 after a quarter. South Lafourche never looked back, roaring to a 37-8 halftime lead before pulling out of its pressure defense in the second half to secure the win. Lady Tarpons coach Rainie Terrebonne said before the game that South Lafourche had to play its best to beat a Carencro team that entered the game having won 7 out of its past 10 games. For about a 10-12minute stretch in the first half, they did, leaving no doubt and punching a ticket to the second round. “We started kind of slow, but once we got going, we got going,” Terrebonne said after the win. That, they did. Carencro pressed South Lafourche early, causing a bit of a sluggish start to the game on both sides. Terrebonne called an early first-quarter timeout to ease her team into the game. Whatever she said worked. Pitre started hitting, scoring 13 first-half points with several deep 3-pointers. Senior Sierra Lerille hurt the Lady Bears from the midrange, as well, scoring on penetration. Also big were Bynum with points and assists, Evan Duet with hustle and motor, as well as post players Abigail Bouzigard, Madelyn Bourgeois and Nalaysia Mack, who all kept the Lady Bears off the glass. Madison Ryan pitched in quality first-half minutes, as well. In the second half, the Lady Tarpons got a bit sluggish, allowing Carencro to chip the 29point halftime lead down into the low-20s a few times. But Terrebonne said South Lafourche didn’t press at all in the second half, which caused a slower-paced, more half court-heavy game, a style that’s not in favor of the Lady Tarpons. But even while playing at a different pace, South Lafourche still ballooned its lead back into the 30s in the fourth quarter before relenting a little late. With the win, South Lafourche now moves to the second-round of the Class 4A State Playoffs, a feat many did not expect possible from this
team in the preseason given the large senior class that departed last year. On Monday night, the Lady Tarpons will host No. 9 Salmen, a far stiffer test. Terrebonne said South Lafourche will work on all facets of their game before then, but added quickly that the team would also spend a little time on Thursday night enjoying the moment and relishing the postseason win. “For all the haters out there who didn’t think we could do it, we did it,” Terrebonne said. “So now, we’ve got to get ready for the second round and see what’s going to happen. Let the chips fall where they may.” ___ Tarpon boys close with a bang The 2018-19 season will not be a playoff campaign for the Tarpons boys’ basketball team. But no one will ever be able to say that the team stopped competing. They have the lateseason wins to prove it.
5-A
The Tarpons won their final two games of the 2018-19 season this week, first beating South Terrebonne 39-31 on Tuesday, then CCA 6737 on Thursday night. The Tarpons will end the season with a 12-15 record, just outside of the Top 32 teams in the Class 4A power rankings. Coach Brian Callais said during a recent radio interview that he’s proud of a youthful team for constantly competing and working hard to get better throughout the season. “We continued to get better,” Callais said. “And we told the guys, ‘Look, we’re young, but we have a good team here.’ Where we were at the beginning of the season compared to now, we’ve made a big leap forward.” South Lafourche sang farewell to three seniors this season, Jake Galjour, Trey Gallagher and Alex LaFont, young men Callais said will be hard to replace on and off the floor. But the Tarpons will return several contributing players, as well, and on paper, will be a team capable of having a winning season next season.

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The blood of the martyrs has always been the seed of Christianity
We often hear about Christians being persecuted for their faith in various parts of the world. It seems like whenever missionaries introduce Christianity to a new country or culture, a persecution begins once these followers of Jesus grow in size. Jesus told his disciples to go out into the whole world and teach the truths he had given them. They were to baptism the believers and make them members of his body. This was a difficult task in many communities, especially where another religious group dominated the culture. In the 16th-century missionaries were trying to introduce Christianity to the Far East. Paul Miki was a Christian from Kyoto, Japan. He was born at Tounucumada, Japan, and educated at the Jesuit college of Anziquiama. He joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. Paul understood the local religion and culture well enough to argue for Christianity to the point where he made enemies. Nine years before his martyrdom, the Japanese emperor had ordered all Christians out of Japan. Religious and political leaders ran the missionaries out of the country and burned down their churches. Paul Miki and his companions (two Jesuit priests, six Franciscan priests, and 17 lay people including catechists, a doctor, a cook, a carpenter, a translator, and three altar boys) remained to continue God’s work. The government arrested and sentenced them to death in December of 1596. The 26 men were forced to march 600 miles more than 30 days to meet their death in Nagasaki. Those in charge repeatedly offered them freedom if they would renounce Christianity; they all declined. When the march ended in Nagasaki, the officers tied the 26 martyrs to crosses and read the Decree of Execution. The victims started to pray and sing while Paul Miki began to preach in a loud voice: “Having arrived at this moment of my existence, I believe that no one thinks I want to hide the truth. That is why I declare that there is no other way of salvation than the one followed by Christians. Since this way teaches me to forgive my enemies and all who have offended me, I willingly forgive the king
Please don’t leave me behind when you move away. I won’t be alright!
and all those who have wanted my death. I pray that they will obtain the desire of Christian baptism.” The man reading their death sentence sought to paint the killings as a necessary government measure. He told the crowd the martyrs were all men from the Philippines who had come to infiltrate Japanese society and erode their traditions with their lies. Paul Miki spoke about his Japanese heritage and the truth of the Gospel. Here are his words as he hung on his cross: “The sentence of judgment says these men came to Japan from the Philippines, but I did not come from any other country. I am a true Japanese. The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I did teach the doctrine of
Christ and am telling the truth. I thank God it is for this reason that I am dying. Ask Christ to help you to become happy. I obey Christ. After Christ’s example I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” The executioners then stabbed these first martyrs of Japan to death with sharp spears while they hung on their crosses. The crowd heard the testimony of Paul Miki and would use his words to spread Christianity in Japan. Nearly 300 years later, missionaries returned to Japan. At first they didn’t find any churches or schools. However, they quickly learned that many people had kept the Christian faith alive in secret over the years.

Please don’t abandon your pets, it’s against the law! There is a huge problem in this parish of folks "dumping" animals, especially at boat launches, on roadways, and at restaurants, with the idea that they’ll be OK. THEY WON’T BE! Also, have your pets spayed or neutered.
