The commercial, titled “Protect Our Coast. Protect Their Future,” was filmed across south Louisiana and features a diverse group of children from the region who are directly impacted by the coastal land loss crisis. Nicholls receives $300,000 donation for renovations

Houma-Thibodaux loses another 400 jobs By Keith Magill Daily Comet Executive Editor

Houma-Thibodaux lost 400 jobs last month and 1,000 last year, new figures show. The area’s unemployment rate, 4.2 percent last month, was down from 4.5 percent in November but

Nicholls State University is excited to announce a significant gift by legendary businessman and philanthropist Boysie Bollinger to renovate the student union. Bollinger, the chairman of the Nicholls Foundation Board, donated $300,000 to renovate the interior of the building. Renovations are expected to begin after Spring 2019 ends and be completed before Fall 2019. “I have been impressed with Nicholls’ commitment to the people of South Louisiana,” Bollinger said. “These students will go on to become the leaders of this region and this state. I’m proud to know that I help enhance their quality of life and impact their education.” Originally built in 1967, the building was named after Boysie’s father and founder of Bollinger Shipyards, Donald G. Bollinger, in 2000. “We are so grateful to Mr. Boysie Bollinger and the entire Bollinger Family for their commitment to Nicholls State University and our students,” said Dr. Jay Clune, Nicholls president. “The Donald G. Bollinger Memorial Student Union is located in the heart of our campus and

showed no change compared to December 2017, according to figures released this week by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The rate declined because the labor force, defined as a combination of people working or looking for jobs locally, continues to shrink. Residents no longer looking for work locally are not counted as unemployed. The metro area, comprised of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, has lost jobs three straight months. And for each of the past five months, the area has shown job losses compared to the year before. However, oil and gas exploration and production jobs are up 200 compared to December 2017, the fourth consecutive over-theyear gain. Prior to the streak, the category had not seen an over-theyear gain since December 2014. The area has lost roughly 16,000 jobs — nearly one of every five — since mid-2014 as low crude prices sparked layoffs and work slowdowns throughout the oil industry. See Jobs Page 3-A

Government pay days- scary future By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist

Federal employees working without pay have recently been admonished. We have heard they could borrow money to tide them over. People have said federal workers should have a reserve fund for government shutdowns. Our own massive government doesn’t have a rainy day fund. With our 22 trilliondollar debt we can’t pay our own workers. If we borrow money as a nation, we borrow it from our own people who are now not even earning a check. We have borrowed about 3 trillion dollars from our Social Security fund thus far. Our government also wants to scale these benefits back for our retirees. We have borrowed money from China and Japan and others to the tune of six trillion dollars. Government is a poor role model for financial management. Many state governments are in shambles trying to reduce pensions promised, increasing taxes to pay salaries and benefits while billions of dollars in debt. County and city governments are facing the same problems. Everybody has a big budget and not enough money to fund the budget. Too many have borrowed money to the hilt to keep everything going as if there is plenty of money. Sadly, we have lived in a panacea of lunacy. Whenever your outgo exceeds your income then your upkeep is your downfall. It is criminal when Government spends money it does not have,

knowing that the only way it will be funded is to further tax its citizens. Government steals the money you work hard for and then mismanages, mishandles and misappropriates it. They lie to us, kick the can down the road and enslave our children and grandchildren with massive debt. In reality does government even care about us? Do they care about our children having a chance at the American dream? Will our grandchildren really know what it’s like to drive on smooth roads and safe bridges? Will government pensions and Social Security become a thing of the past? If Government can’t pay you this week then why do you think they will pay us in our old age? Thus, as scary as it all is, we had better find a way to make and save some money because they are showing us firsthand that Government is not even competent much less infallible. Federal, state and local government must change. We must stop: spending money that we do not have; building other nations at the expense of our own; involving ourselves in the business of other countries; taking care of criminals flooding our country. We must start: keeping our jobs and payrolls in America. Finally, our future is scary. Without real change and working together we are going to drown together. It won’t be fun pointing our fingers at each other at the bottom of the lake. ___ Contact Glenn at GMollette@aol.com. Ad From 1-A

Restore the Mississippi River Delta — a coalition of local and national conservation groups working in Louisiana to protect people, wildlife and jobs by connecting the river and its wetlands — will run the ad for an additional six weeks, accompanied by an online advocacy campaign through social media, YouTube and at RestoreTheCoast.org. After the devastating no-call that cost the Saints their chance at the Big Game, many fans around the nation are calling for a boycott. Even if they miss the game, Restore the Mississippi River Delta is hopeful that fans will be on the lookout in the weeks to come for the real stars of the day — the children of Louisiana’s coast. According to Cochran, “These kids are the real stars of Sunday’s game. Their message, however, is one that will resonate long after the game ends. The restoration and protection of Louisiana’s coast is for their future and the future of our entire region. As our star quarterback Drew Brees has said, let’s all come together and work to give back to our state and communities and accomplish great things together.” The coalition is hoping to bring awareness to the issue of coastal land loss as told through the children’s voices because, ultimately, this is about their future. “It’s very important for my generation to care about this issue,” said Madeline Heymann, a 13-year-old New Orleans

native who appears in the campaign. “This is our future. Without action, our home and state are in danger.” Louisiana’s wetlands feed and fuel the nation, and the erosion of these ecosystems is the greatest conservation issue our nation is currently facing. Louisiana contains five of the nation’s 15 largest shipping ports by tonnage, provides 30 percent of commercial fishing landings in the lower 48 states, and generates $9.3 billion per year in tourism. To date, Louisiana has lost 1.2 million acres of land. Recent catastrophes, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the BP oil disaster exacerbated this coastal crisis. Without action, Louisiana is projected to lose up to an additional 4,000 square miles over the next 50 years. There are many ways to get involved in the fight to save coastal Louisiana. From volunteering to contacting elected officials to attending public meetings and other events, all Americans have the power to make a difference in restoring Louisiana’s coast. Jobs From 1-A

The U.S. industry has rebounded along with oil prices, but job growth has been limited mostly to inland shale fields, where drilling is less costly than the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Economists and analysts say that is beginning to change as companies drive down the break-even cost of Gulf drilling and oil prices have risen. Louisiana economist Loren Scott told local business people that he expects the area to gain 700 jobs this year and 2,100 in 2020 as oil prices rise and offshore drilling picks up. Louisiana’s unemployment rate, 4.3 percent in December, was down from 4.5 percent in November but up from 4 percent a year ago. Across the U.S., only Alaska, the District of Columbia and West Virginia posted higher jobless rates, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The U.S. jobless rate was 3.7 percent in December, up from 3.5 percent in November but down from 3.9 percent a year ago. Among trends in Tuesday’s report: 1. The local workforce continues to shrink. The area’s civilian labor force totaled 85,554 in December, down 928 for the month and 2,408 for the year. The figure is down from 107,577 in August 2014, a 20 percent decline. Since the oil bust began, one of every five people in the labor force have left Terrebonne and Lafourche, gone back to school or otherwise stopped looking for work. In December, 3,621 residents were unemployed and looking for work, 312 fewer than November and 44 fewer than a year ago. 2. The area has lost

nearly one-third of its oilfield jobs since the bust began, but the numbers are rising slowly. Jobs directly involved in oil and gas exploration and production have remained nearly steady since April. The total, 5,400, is down 100 for the month but up 200 from a year ago. And it’s down 2,300, or 31 percent, since August 2014. The trend is similar for oilfield-service jobs. About 4,500 people held such jobs in December, down 200 for the month and 100 for the year. The total is down 1,700, or

Louisiana ranks high for pedestrian danger, deaths

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana ranks among the most dangerous areas for pedestrians in a new national report. The state is listed as fourth in the nation for pedestrian fatalities in the report released by Smart Growth America. In Louisiana, 1,047 walkers were hit and killed by drivers from 2008 through 2017, an average of 2.25 for every 100,000 people. Baton Rouge is listed as 12th among the top 20 metro areas on the “Pedestrian Danger Index.” The report says the city had 182 pedestrian deaths over the decade, averaging more than 2 deaths for every 100,000 people. The report says the number of people struck and killed by drivers while walking increased 35 percent nationally over the decade. The report suggests better crosswalks, sidewalks and other infrastructure to make it safer for walkers. ___

Nungesser urges Louisiana residents to travel their state

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, Louisiana’s chief tourism ambassador, has an idea for where his state’s residents should vacation: close to home. As part of Tuesday’s “National Plan for Vacation Day,” Nungesser urged Louisianans to book trips around the state. The Republican lieutenant governor says they should see a part of the state they haven’t seen. He encouraged them to visit LouisianaTravel.com . 30 percent, since August 2014. 3. The losses have been worse for shipbuilding and other maritime jobs, but the decline has also slowed. The local offshore maritime industry employed 3,300 people in December, the same since April and no change for the month or year. The local maritime industry has shed 2,900 jobs, or 48 percent, since the oil bust began. 4. The area’s average pay is the highest among the state’s nine metro areas. Employees in Terrebonne and Lafourche earned an av-

erage hourly wage of $26.53 last month, up 55 cents from a year ago. That equates to a salary of $55,182 a year. The next closest metro area was Baton Rouge, with an average hourly wage of $26.20 in December. LSU went 10-3 with a Fiesta Bowl victory over Central Florida this past season, which was Orgeron’s second full season in charge since he took over after Les Miles’ firing four games into the 2016 season. Orgeron’s current salary pays a base of $3.5 million plus incentives and runs through the 2021 season. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/tag/Collegefootball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd

For a civilization to succeed, the family must succeed and flourish

Building a strong family life is an important task of families of all sizes and backgrounds. Trying to establish strong family ties is difficult in our secular world today. All too often today we read about one family member killing or injuring another family member. The family must be the core that holds society together. I found some quotes dealing with what some great minds thought family life should look like. I present them to you to see if your family can meet these ideals. Bob Ladouceur, a De la Salle High School football coach in Concord, California said, “Our tradition calls for a commitment to accountability. This is not an assumption – this is a promise that I will be there for you; and I can count on you being there for me.” Family members are accountable to each other. The more privileges we have, the more we are responsible to each other. The security of a family depends on our being responsible to each other. Sir Josiah Stamp, an English economics who died in 1941 said, “It is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities.” Applying this to the family, if a child has no responsibilities when growing up in a family and gets everything handed to him or her “on a silver platter,” this is the type of person who will probably be crippled for life and never want to move out of their parents’ house. Brad Henry, a former governor of Oklahoma, said, “Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.” No one has a perfect family. All of our families are a little dysfunctional. However, if we listen to what our parents are trying to tell us, evaluate it and apply it to our lives, we will probably be better off. American writer, Deb Caletti, described the role of love in a family. She said, “That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.” Parents usually “pick up their children” when they have fallen. True love is stronger than mistakes. However, we all must learn from our mistakes. If love exists among members of a

family, you will usually find a happy home, not a perfect home, but a happy one. Virginia Satir, an American Author who is known especially for her approach to family therapy, once said, “Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible – the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.” We are not supposed to be carbon copies of our parents. We will pick up some of their similar traits but God has made each of us different – with special gifts and characteristic. Each family member must get in touch with their own giftedness, develop it, and use it for the common good.

A French Proverb says, “Children have more need of models than critics.” Children see horrible models on television and the movies. They first need to see their parents and other adults as models. If parents are never around, they will be poor models. Being a model is more important than making a lot of money. Desmond Tutu, a South African Anglican cleric and theologian known for his work as a human rights activist, reminds us, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.” In another place he said, “God’s dream is that you and I and all of us will realize that we are family, that we are made for togetherness, for goodness, and for compassion.”

Catholic Foundation hosts Mother Teresa Women’s Giving Circle

The Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana announces its inaugural Mother Teresa Women’s Giving Circle, a new initiative dedicated to bringing together a group of women to learn about the needs in the diocese and community, and to raise awareness and funds for philanthropic giving. To kick off the Mother Teresa Women’s Giving Circle, the Catholic Foundation will host a Mass with Bishop Fabre on Saturday, March 16th at St. Thomas Aquinas in Thibodaux, followed by a brunch at Nicholls.

If we have not included your church, or you would like to be a part of the Worship Directory, please call the Lafourche Gazette at 693-7229.

Full Gospel Temple #2

As part of the kick off brunch, women interested are welcome to gather to learn about organizations and their needs, and decide together which projects to fund. There will also be opportunities to share ideas, serve with one another and, of course, plenty of time to socialize. For more information about the Mother Teresa Women’s Giving Circle, visit www.catholicfoundationsl.org. If interested in joining, contact Amy Ponson at 985-850-3116 or aponson@htdiocese.org.
