Shipyard employee, two others arrested for felony theft at Port Fourchon

A shipyard employee and two other men were arrested after approximately $100,000 of metal had been stolen from a shipyard in Port Fourchon over the past several months. Travis Bouziga, 38, of Golden Meadow, was an employee of the shipyard and is suspected to have arranged for the theft of metal by two other men – David Ingram, 53, of Galliano and Davin Burns, 34, of Cut Off. On January 3, deputies responded to the Port Fourchon shipyard where various metal items were reportedly stolen. Through an investigation, detectives identified Ingram and Burns as suspects in the theft. They also identified Bouziga, an employee of the shipyard, as having assisted in the theft. Further investigation revealed there had been multiple instances of metal theft dating back several months. Detectives learned Bouziga had arranged for Ingram to steal metal on numerous occasions and have it scrapped. They would then split the

Trump’s wall and illegal prowlers By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist

A few years ago I visited South Africa where the average house was surrounded by a concrete wall. South Africa has many villages and rural communities of impoverished people where the main goal each day is to find a clean drink of water. However, people throughout many of the towns and cities lived behind walls. Brazil is another country I’ve visited a couple of times where steel bars in windows and walls around houses are prevalent. Thieves and robbers are common in Brazil and South Africa and it is understandable why they want walls around their houses to protect their valuables and families. Gated communities, security fences and security guards have been on the rise in America. We have security in our banks, schools, neighborhoods and churches. Any reasonable thinking business, factory, government building, apartment complex and family must have security and a defense in place. We used to go to bed at night when I was a kid and never thought about locking the door but I remember my mother making a change one night. She said, “We’re going to start locking our door.” There were reports of prowlers in the community where we lived and she wanted to protect us.

Today we have prowlers roaming the communities of America. There are estimates of anywhere from 11 to 27 million illegal immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security has estimated approximately 12 million illegal immigrants are in our country. The Pew Research Center has estimated just over 11 million illegal immigrants are in America. Three Yale School of Management Professors published a paper in 2018 estimating the illegal population is somewhere between 16 and 29 million people. These are people who have said, “To heck with our laws and rules we are coming to do whatever we please in America.” These people are robbers and thieves. They have no regard for what is expected in America. Their goal is to get into our country first and then gain the sympathy of America to allow them to stay here. We know many good hard workers come from Mexico. The “good” hard workers come legally. Most Americans are sympathetic people. We give large amounts of money to charities, churches, food pantries and pay large amounts of money back into our federal government which in turn utilizes our money to help millions of Americans, refugees and immigrants. Research how much money is paid out to refugees. The Cash and Medical Assistance Program reimburses states for 100 percent of services provided to refugees and other eligible programs, as well as associated Administrative costs. Some Refugees and other noncitizens can get SSI, Supplemental Security Income for up to Seven Years. The cost is billions of dollars. I’m not opposed to helping true refugees but the overall financial load is not light - 8.8 billion over the next five years or $80,000 per refugee. The President has asked for five billion dollars to build a wall on our Southern border. He is trying to protect us. It’s not a silver bullet that will solve all of our problems but it’s adding a layer of security.

If we don’t build a wall along the Southern border we will soon become like many other third world countries with walls around our houses and subdivisions. Trump’s five-billion-dollar wall will look

like a pocket full of change in comparison to a nation of gates and walls trying to protect ourselves from millions and millions of illegal prowlers.

And new discoveries near BP’s Na Kika platform provide additional development opportunities, officials said. BP is already the Gulf’s largest oil producer, and officials say the latest discoveries will help it grow output to about 400,000 barrels a day within the next decade. All of the platforms are roughly 140-160 miles southeast of the Gulf’s main oilfield service hub at Port Fourchon. BP’s announcement comes a day after Danos, an oilfield service company based in Gray, said two new contracts in the Gulf prompted it to hire 150 workers. ___ Information from: The Courier, http://www.houmatoday.com

Perry Gisclair, who has served as a commissioner for a total of 12 years and board president the past six years, said he welcomes what awaits him and his fellow board members. “The great people of the 10th Ward of Lafourche elected us to this commission because we live here and want to work hard on their behalf. Analysis: 2019 may be light on Louisiana legislative action

By MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana residents hoping to see the governor and lawmakers tackle the state’s entrenched problems and enact sweeping change might need to lower their expectations. This year probably won’t be the year for them. The two-month regular legislative session that starts in April comes after 10 mostly contentious legislative sessions — including seven special sessions to deal with state finances — were packed into three years. It also comes in an election year. Many lawmakers are likely to be less ambitious after the exhausting budget and tax battles they’ve waged since 2016. In addition, lawmakers and Gov. John Bel Edwards likely will be less interested in irking voters in a year where they’re running to hold onto their current seats or to advance to new elected positions. Election-year sessions often aren’t memorable, and they’re not typically known as reform years. That’s not to say some people won’t try to be ambitious. A few lawmakers are talking about trying to rewrite Louisiana’s tax laws. Chatter continues about trying to raise the gas tax to address a multibillion-dollar backlog of road and bridge work. Others want to overhaul Louisiana’s method of collecting sales taxes. Some want to revisit additional hot-button topics of years past. The question is whether any of those bigpicture ideas can rally enough support among skittish politicians trying to preserve their chances on the ballot. The governorship, six other statewide jobs, and all 144 state legislative seats are up for grabs in the Oct. 12 primary election. Edwards, a Democrat running for a second term, gave a sneak peak of his legislative agenda to the Press Club of Baton Rouge last week. The list was largely a modest one. The governor will revisit his failed proposals to increase the state’s minimum wage and to enact new equal pay provisions, but their chances of passage seem slim. He’ll push statelevel legislation to prohibit health insurers from refusing coverage to people because of their medical conditions — aimed at duplicating a provision of the federal health overhaul that is threatened by litigation. Edwards’ top priority is a $1,000 teacher pay raise, the start of an effort to return salaries to the Southern average. Passage of the pay hike would be significant, but it’s also not exactly touching on a controversial subject. Republicans and Democrats seem to be in widespread agree-

Danos secures major contracts

GRAY, La. – Danos has secured a contract with Equinor for production operation support on its Titan SPAR platform, located in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The Equinor project began late 2018 and employs production personnel on the floating drilling and production structure located at Mississippi Canyon block 941 at a depth of nearly 4,000 feet. This is Danos’ second job with Equinor, as it was awarded a contract for coatings maintenance on the Titan platform earlier this fall. Danos has also been awarded a multi-year contract for production operations with another major oil and gas producer in the Gulf of Mexico. As a result of these recent contract awards, Danos has increased its production workforce by about 150 new employees. The majority of these new positions are production operators who will be working on the Gulf Coast, with projects spanning from Galveston, Texas, to

Police: Man’s car stolen as he exits to chase wallet thief

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a man’s car was stolen after he exited to chase a woman who had taken his wallet. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune cites a police report as saying the man was carjacked early Monday in Mid-City. The police report says the man’s car was stopped at an intersection when another man approached his door and grabbed the steering wheel. Police say that at about the same time, the woman got into the passenger seat and grabbed the man’s wallet. The driver accelerated and left the other man behind. The woman then jumped out with his wallet. Police say the man got out to go get his wallet back, but returned to discover his car was missing. The police report was unclear on if he retrieved his wallet, and didn’t provide further details. Information from: The TimesPicayune, http://www.nola.com

ment about backing some sort of teacher pay raise, with most of the questions centering on how much to boost salaries and whether to extend the increase to school support workers as Edwards wants. The largest fight on teacher pay may simply be about who gets to take credit for the raise. House Republican leaders, who regularly clash with the governor, have blocked the income forecast boost that Edwards wants to use to pay for the salary increases, saying the state has too much financial uncertainty for the changes. They say they want to wait more months into the year to see if the projections stay on track. If the House GOP leaders continue to hold out on the forecast changes, that could complicate Edwards’ plan to include the teacher raises in the budget proposal he’ll release in February. House Republicans could then adopt the forecast changes later and add the money for the teacher raises into the budget themselves. The main events in the 2019 legislative session may be political posturing and the battle to take credit. The looming elections are expected to provoke more partisan wrangling and even less willingness to compromise. Republicans in the majority-GOP House and Senate likely will be angling to put Edwards in uncomfortable positions with some of the maneuvers they make and the bills they propose. Meanwhile, the Edwards administration will be trying to protect its prior-year wins and stop anything that would put the governor in a politically tricky spot from reaching his desk. The differing sides won’t necessarily want to make it easy for their opponents to claim a win. That could make it difficult to find compromises in policymaking this year. ___

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The family is a place where we love each other far beyond our merits

This past year was an up and down year for many of us. Whether we agree or disagree with the present policies of our country, one thing we can agree on is the importance of our families. When we speak of family life today, having a single idea of what a family looks like is difficult. In the U.S. 31 percent of families have less than two parents. Also when speaking of the family, different emotions surface – joy, thankfulness, sadness, pain, anger, disappointment. A story from 15th century Germany can help us see the value of each family member. In the city of Weinsberg, Germany, an ancient fortress stands on the very top of the hill overlooking the city. The townspeople of Weinsberg tell an interesting story about that fortress and that hill. In the days of chivalry and honor, an enemy encircled that hill and sealed all the townspeople inside the fortress. The enemy commander sent word up to the fortress, saying that he would allow the women and children to go free before he launched his devastating attack. After further negotiations the enemy commander also agreed, on his word of honor, to let each woman take with her, the most valuable possession she owned provided she could carry it. You can imagine the enemy army’s anxiety and surprise when, a few minutes later, the women marched out of the fortress, each carrying her husband on her back! Our family members are our most valuable possessions. When Mary and Joseph return to Jerusalem to look for Jesus, they are surprised to find him sitting with the doctors and asking them questions. When they express their worry and anxiety, Jesus replies that he must be about God’s affairs. Mary and Joseph do not understand what Jesus means. Misunderstandings occurred in Jesus’ family. This can be reassuring when it happens in of our own families. Misunderstanding causes pain and confusion. Many older parents find it difficult to accept the choices that their adult children make. In particular, they struggle when their adult children no longer go to Church, profess their faith or choose alternative lifestyles. To love is to continue to accept the other person, even if their choices are hard to accept. To love requires giving freedom that is appropriate to age and maturity. This balance is difficult to achieve. The task of parenting is to nurture this maturity. For any parent, letting go is difficult. To let go does not mean to stop caring; it means I cannot do it for someone else. To let go is not to cut myself off. It’s the real-

ization that I cannot control another. To let go is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences. To let go is to admit powerlessness, which means the outcome is not in my hands. To let go is not to try to change or blame another; I can only change myself. To let go is not to fix, but to be supportive. To let go is not to judge, but to allow another to be a human being. To let go is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes, but to allow others to effect their own outcomes. To let go is not to be protective; it’s to permit another to face reality. To let go is not to deny, but to accept.

To let go is not to nag, scold, or argue, but to search out my own shortcomings and to correct them. To let go is not to adjust everything to my desires, but to take each day as it comes. To let go is not to criticize and regulate anyone, but to try to become what I dream I can be. To let go is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future. To let go is to fear less and love more. The family is a place where we love each other far beyond our merits. Loving like this and being accepted like this helps us to see our own worth and value. It produces more family happiness and joy than can be found anywhere else.
