Lorraine’s measures shot down again By Buster Avera Contributing Writer

District 9 Councilman Daniel Lorraine was again the victim of a lack of support as fellow council members failed W to support his measures. Opposition from council members at a November 2017 meeting at which Lorraine tried unsuccessfully to pass two ordinances carried over into last Tuesday’s Parish Council public meeting when two more of his ordinances were each shot down for lack of a “second”. In one of the November ordinances Lorraine

LA 308 North of US 90 to close until further notice

Louisiana Hwy. 308, between U.S. Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 182 in Raceland, will be closed to traffic until further notice. The reason for the closure is due to a structural problem with the existing timber bridge located on LA 308, approximately 1.2 miles north of US 90. The bridge needs to be closed for emergency repair work.

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.6 percent in December, the eighth consecutive month the unemployment rate has declined. Compared to December 2016, the unemployment rate has decreased 1.4 percentage points. The last time the unemployment rate was lower was in March 2008. “While there remains room for improvement, we are pleased to see consistent declines in the state unemployment rate and continued over-the-year improvement in job opportunities,” said Ava Dejoie, Executive Director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. “The increasing vitality of the state’s labor market is evidenced by every new hire, and we expect to see additional growth moving forward.”

South Lafourche fire department gets new chief New Fire District #3 Chief, Kully Griffin.

Bridget Mire - daily/houmacourier

By Bridget Mire Daily Comet Staff Writer

Since joining Lafourche Parish Fire District #3 in 1999 as a volunteer, Kully Griffin has worked his way up to volunteer fire chief, training officer and assistant fire chief. Now, he’s leading the department, having been appointed fire chief at a board meeting Monday. The former chief, Freddy Guidry Jr., died June 30 at age 70. Griffin was named interim chief in July but had to go through the civil service process. Griffin said he joined the fire department after another member kept telling him about it. Guidry, then assistant chief,

took him under his wing and they formed a strong working relationship. “Ninety percent of what I learned came from him,” Griffin said. “He was my mentor even before I knew what a mentor was. He helped me tremendously. Without him, there’s no way I would have even considered or been ready to take this job.” Fire District 3 has a little over 50 employees and a little under 50 volunteers, Griffin said. It has 13 stations from Larose to Fourchon, three of which are staffed 24/7. Griffin said the department’s growth over the years has been a source of pride, though he credits Guidry with much of it.

Health Unit to give flu vaccines at no cost

The Louisiana Department of Health will offer flu vaccines at no cost to the patient at more than 55 Parish Health Units located throughout the state. Flu vaccines will be offered at no cost on Wednesday, January 31, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Lafourche Parish Health Unit in Galliano, 133 W. 112th St., and Thibodaux at 2535 Veterans Blvd. The clinics scheduled for Wednesday are open to the public, and walk-ups are welcome. Wear short or loose-fitting sleeves and bring your private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare card if you have one. The vaccine is available to anyone who has not received a vaccine this flu season. “Louisiana is experiencing a severe flu season and the flu strain we are seeing now is one that typically causes more severe illness, and results in higher hospitalization rates and deaths,” said Dr. Frank Welch, state immunization medical director. “In more severe seasons, the flu causes approximately 700 deaths and nearly 8,000 hospitalizations each year in Louisiana. We are already on track to meet and possibly exceed these statistics for the 2017/18 flu season.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Louisiana Department of Health recommend a yearly flu shot for everyone over six months of age who does not have a complicating condition, such as a prior allergic reaction to the flu shot. A flu shot is especially crucial for people who may be at higher risk for serious complications including babies and young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and people 65 years and older. The flu shot starts to offer partial protection immediately, but takes about two weeks to offer full protection.

Letters and Opinions

Pro-choice or pro-life?

prothere’s So, choice and pro-life. Two very different opinions. When I was in college, I thought prochoice was valid … drank the Kool-aid, so to speak. One day, I seriously it what considered meant and I realized ONLY one of two sides was given a choice. Since then, I became 100% pro life, because if both sides can’t weigh in, there are no true choices! So, here’s the conundrum: I’m expected to look the other way

and support Planned Parenthood? That’s an oxymoron because only one part is planned for children to live but one part is planned for them to die. Planning seems very lopsided. Yes, people have rights to their opinions. However, it’s beyond my how understanding murder is an opinion that is a good option. Just saying! So I leave with a “I don’t quote here: know how someone’s reproductive system can simultaneously be 0% not my business and 100% my financial responsibility.” Sherry Robichaux Cut Off

attempted to request traffic calming devices (speed bumps) to be installed on West 202nd Street in Galliano. The vote was 4-5 with Council members Jerry Jones, Luci Sposito, Cory Perrillioux, Bo Melvin, and Jerry Lafont voting “nay”. In the other ordinance, he tried to restrict cast netting, pets and the maximum number of rod/reels allowed per person on the new Leeville Fishing Pier. His motion failed 2-7 with only himself and James Bourgeois in favor. Lorraine’s lack of Council support carried over into Tuesday’s meeting when he sponsored two measures dealing with a proposed turning lane at the intersection of Hwy. 308 and the Airport Access Road in Galliano. One ordinance would have approved an agreement between the Greater Lafourche Port Commission and the Parish Council for the Port to grant servitude for construction of a turning lane on the Airport Road at Hwy. 308. The other ordinance would have created a similar agreement between the Parish and the Lafourche Parish Water District which also owns property along the Airport Corridor. Both ordinances failed for lack of any Council member seconding the motion to consider the ordinance. Without a “second” the ordinances failed. Absent from the meeting were Melvin and Bourgeois. Lorraine noted the apparent “battle line” which most other Council members have drawn between themselves and anything Lorraine sponsors. “This is all grant money. But if ya’ll are just going to shoot down whatever I want … it’s terrible. This (the ordinances) is negotiating with the Port for grant money and ya’ll are going to shoot it down? Come on gentlemen (and Miss),” said Lorraine. Jerry Lafont responded that he had spoken to Chett Chiasson about the ordinances.

“It’s the way it’s written, Daniel. I spoke to the Port, to Chet today about it, and he’s in agreement. Never has this council ever done a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement by ordinance which is law. It’s always been done by resolution,” said Lafont, Lorraine said he would not bring the two proposals back up as resolutions and that if Lafont was against them, he could inform the Port that they had failed. “I am not against them as an ordinance. It needs to be a resolution,” Lafont repeated.

Labor From 1-A

The Houma/Thibodaux unemployment rate remained unchanged, but lost 1,500 jobs from December 2016. The number of seasonally adjusted employed individuals increased by 19,196 from November 2017 to 2,019,587. The number of seasonally adjusted employed individuals increased by 45,088 compared to the same time last year. From November 2017, the number of seasonally adjusted unemployed individuals decreased to 97,337. This is the lowest number of seasonally adjusted unemployed individuals for the year, and also the lowest since May 2008. Compared to December 2016, the number of seasonally adjusted unemployed individuals has declined by 28,578. The increase in the civilian labor force this month positively affected the labor force participation rate, a measure indicating the share of residents engaged in the labor market. The labor force participation rate increased over the month from 58.2 percent to 58.7 percent. Industries that showed the largest job gains appeared to be construction and manufacturing. Among Louisiana’s metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), remaining seasonally adjusted data shows: • Alexandria gained 200 jobs from November 2017 and remained unchanged from December 2016. • Baton Rouge gained 1,300 jobs from November 2017 and 9,000 jobs from December 2016. The Baton Rouge MSA has had 12 straight overthe-year increases. • Houma remained unchanged from November 2017, but lost 1,500 jobs from December 2016. • Lafayette lost 1,500 jobs from November 2017, but remained unchanged from December 2016. • Lake Charles lost 700 jobs from November 2017, but gained 4,200

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign for Mardi Gras season to start up

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will join other local law enforcement agencies in participating in the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign which runs through the Mardi Gras season – February 214. The campaign is coordinated and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Additional deputies will be assigned to saturated patrol efforts to target impaired drivers and help keep motorists safe. There will also be several checkpoints held in conjunction with the campaign. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk

driving is a deadly epidemic that takes the lives of more than 10,000 people each year, on average. In 2016, 268 people were killed as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol in Louisiana alone. Sheriff Craig Webre reminds citizens to have a plan to get home safely before you decide to drink. Whether you are attending a parade or a party, or drinking at an establishment, never drive if you have had anything to drink containing alcohol. Remember that driving under the influence of illegal narcotics can also lead to a DWI arrest. In fact, some legal medications can impair your ability to drive. Always read warning labels and instructions on prescription and overthe-counter medications.

The principal discharge from this existing source is made into local drainage, thence into Bayou Lafourche, waters of the state classified for primary contact recreation, secondary contact recreation and propagation of fish and wildlife. Under the SIC Code 1389, the applicant proposes to discharge treated sanitary wastewater, exterior vehicle and equipment washwater and stormwater runoff from an existing oilfield service company and marine terminal. During the preparation of this permit, it has been determined that the discharge will have no adverse impact on the existing uses of the receiving waterbody. As with any discharge, however, some change in existing water quality may occur. Louisiana to tell tourists the state will ‘Feed Your Soul’

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Louisiana has a new tourism slogan: “Feed Your Soul.” Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser on Tuesday announced that the state’s tourism department was moving on from its 7-year-old “Pick Your Passion” slogan to the new branding effort. The Republican lieutenant governor says the new brand tells travelers that Louisiana has soulful, rewarding experiences. On Fat Tuesday, the new slogan will be rolled out around the country, with “Feed Your Soul” food trucks serving king cake and handing out Mardi Gras beads and cups in high-traffic areas in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Washington, D.C. Nungesser’s office says the “Feed Your Soul” strategy was created after six months of research and testing done by tourism marketing firm Miles Partnership. Nungesser announced the slogan at the Louisiana Travel

They included new nonstop flights to London-Heathrow and seasonal nonstop service to Frankfurt, Germany. Within the United States, new flights were added to a dozen cities including San Francisco, Boston and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The number of passengers has risen 35 percent since 2010, including records of 10.6 million in 2015 and 11.1 million in 2016. “This is a clear sign that New Orleans isn’t just back on its feet, it is as vibrant as ever,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “As a top travel destination in 2018, we

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd The simple lifestyle of St. Anthony of the Desert helped him to live until he was 103

St. Anthony of the Desert was born in Coma, Lower Egypt about 251 AD. He was a man of severe austerity and personal holiness yet he lived to be over a 100-years-old. St. Athanasius wrote his biography entitled the “Life of St. Anthony” in 360. Anthony’s parents were wealthy landowners who died when Anthony was about 18 years old. They left him a large inheritance to care for his unmarried sister. Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:21 resonated with him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven; then come, follow me.” Anthony gave away and sold his property, donating the proceeds to the poor. He secured a place for his sister in a convent and became the disciple of a local hermit. He is often pictured with a pig because he allegedly worked for a while as a swineherd. Anthony traveled to a desert region 60 miles west of Alexandria. He remained there for 13 years and earned the title of “Father of Monasticism” for his holiness and good example. Anthony attracted hundreds of men and women who ventured into the desert to join his various small monastic communities. Athanasius tells us that the devil attacked Anthony with boredom, laziness, and visions of women. Anthony fought these off with prayer and ascetic practices. He moved into a tomb residing there for some time. He next went to a mountain region by the Nile called Pispir, where he lived isolated in an ancient Roman fort for about 20 years. While living in the fort he would not allow anyone in to see him, nor would he venture outside the walls of the fort. A small opening served as a passageway for food and without opening the doors he could listen to the visitors’ questions and offered spiritual advice. After the many years in isolation, he decided to leave the fort and went to Fayyum, where he spread the Christian faith. In 311, Anthony went to Alexandria, where he visited the imprisoned persecuted Christians and supported them in their hardship. The governor saw that he was publicly proclaiming the Christian faith so he expelled him from the city. He again returned to the Roman fort, where many people came to seek his advice. Anthony saw this as a distraction, so he left the fort and went deeper into the desert. He traveled for

three days until he came upon a spring of water and some palm trees and settled there. It was only a matter of time until people were seeking his spiritual teachings. Later the monastery of Saint Anthony the Great was constructed there. Anthony and his disciples both prayed and worked. They later compiled some of his spiritual advice into the book of “Sayings of the Desert Fathers.” Word of Anthony’s holiness and wisdom reached Emperor Constantine, who wrote to him offering praise and requesting Anthony’s prayers. Anthony’s disciples were pleased with the letter, but Anthony did not respond to it. His brother monks urged him to answer the Emperor’s letter. He finally did and sent blessings to

the emperor and offered prayers for peace and safety. In 338, Anthony traveled to Alexandria to help Athanasius refute the teachings of Arius, who taught that Jesus was not divine. Though not a learned man, Anthony was still quite successful in admonishing the heretics and pointing out their errors. Anthony wanted to be buried in an unmarked, secret grave. He died in 356, and they buried him on the mountaintop where he had lived. They discovered his body in 361, and brought it to Alexandria. Later, they took his remains from Alexandria to Constantinople, to avoid desecration and destruction by the invading Saracens. His feast day is January 17.
