Effort to reduce Lafourche School Board members fails The Lafourche Parish School Board rejected a proposal to reduce the number of its members from 15 to nine at their monthly meeting WednesW day. After a lengthy discussion, the board decided against the proposal, citing the possible money needed to research something that they may not be able to do and the loss of representation and diversity on the board. Members of the Veterans Memorial Board invite residents of the Tenth Ward to use the free walking trail located behind the Memorial Wall on Hwy. 3235. The Walking Trail of Tears, which measures 5,400 feet long by six feet wide, is completely enclosed by a fence. Within the fence are four American flags flown at half-staff to honor the more than 50 fallen soldiers from the 10th Ward. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana is getting a $60 million federal grant that will allow the state to complete a nearly 15-mile pavement replacement and lane addition project between the Interstate 10 and Interstate 49 interchange and the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. Gov. John Bel Edwards and state Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson announced on Tuesday the FASTLANE funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Edwards submitted the application for funding in April. He and Wilson began working on the application during the governor’s transition last year. The entire project is estimated to cost more

than $300 million. Edwards and Wilson said the federal government’s investment enables the state to dedicate available funds to advancing other infrastructure projects. “While we are extremely grateful that the federal government is making this investment in Louisiana, this award will make it possible to invest in infrastructure projects across the State of Louisiana,” Edwards said in a statement. “From North Louisiana to South Louisiana — East to West — we have infrastructure needs that have been ignored for years. A robust Louisiana economy is dependent upon a strong infrastructure, and I am looking forward to getting projects underway across the state.” See Grant Page 3-A
protest over fatal police shootings of black men in other states, authorities said. It appeared to be the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the 2001 terrorist attacks. Thursday’s bloodshed, which unfolded just a few blocks from where President John F. Kennedy was slain in 1963, also evoked the trauma of the nation’s tumultuous civil rights era. Police Chief David Brown blamed “snipers,” but it was unclear how many shooters were involved. Authorities initially said three suspects were in custody and a fourth dead. But Brown later said police were not certain that all suspects had been located. Mayor Mike Rawlings said the dead suspect was slain by police using explosives in a parking garage where the man had exchanged gunfire with officers. Before dying, the police chief said, the dead suspect declared to officers that he was upset about recent shootings and wanted to kill whites, “especially white officers.” The suspect had also said he was not affiliated with any groups and stated that he acted alone, Brown added. As of press time Friday morning, none of the suspects had been identified, and the police chief said he would not disclose any details about them until authorities were sure everyone involved was in custody. The shooting began about 8:45 p.m. Thursday while hundreds of people were gathered to protest the week’s fatal police shootings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota. Brown told reporters the snipers fired “ambush style” on the officers. Two civilians were also wounded, Rawlings said. See Shooting Page 3-A

Bragging rights
Three old ladies are sitting around a table playing bridge and bragging about their sons. “Everyone should be so lucky to have a son like my Freddie, said Margaret, “Once a week he brings me a huge bouquet of flowers, he’s constantly bringing me out to restaurants to eat, if I so much as hint that I want something the next morning it’s on my doorstep. “That’s very nice about your Freddie, says Gertrude. “But with all due respect, when I think about the way my Sammy takes care of me, it just can’t compare. Every morning as soon as I wake up he greets me with bacon and freshly brewed coffee. Every lunch he comes over and cooks me a gourmet lunch, and every supper he brings me to his
house for supper. He truly treats me like a queen. “Well, says Barbara “I don’t want to make any of you feel bad or anything; but wait until you hear about my Harry. “Twice a week he pays someone $200 an hour just so he can lie on a couch and talk to them. And who do you think he speaks about at those prices?, asks Barbara with a big excited smile. “I’ll tell you who he talks about! All he talks about for the entire hour is me!

Grant From 1-A
Those projects include construction of a new Washington Street off ramp in Baton Rouge, advancing the design of a reconstructed interchange at Loyola Avenue for the New Orleans Airport, improving railroad crossings on the freight-rail corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and advancing design of the I-20/220 interchange into Barksdale. “The entire state stands to benefit from this grant, Edwards said. “By freeing up state funds for this project, we will be in a position to redirect resources to other critical infrastructure needs across Louisiana. This was a collaborative effort between state, federal and local stakeholders that will have significant impact on our state. “As we consider ways to invest in transportation infrastructure for Louisiana, this grant is a great first step to beginning that process, Wilson said.
Shooting From 1-A
Brown said it appeared the shooters “planned to injure and kill as many officers as they could. Video from the scene showed protesters marching along a downtown street about half a mile from City Hall
when shots erupted and the crowd scattered, seeking cover. “I think the biggest thing that we’ve had something like this is when JFK died, resident Jalisa Jackson said early Friday from downtown. Officers crouched beside vehicles, armored SWAT team vehicles arrived and a helicopter hovered overhead. Demonstrations were held in several other U.S. cities Thursday night to protest the police killings of two more black men: A Minnesota officer on Wednesday fatally shot Philando Castile while he was in a car with a woman and a child, the shooting’s aftermath livestreamed in a widely shared Facebook video. A day earlier, Alton Sterling was shot in Louisiana after being pinned to the pavement by two white officers. That, too, was captured on a cellphone video. Thursday’s shootings occurred in an area of hotels, restaurants, businesses and some residential apartments only a few blocks from Dealey Plaza, the landmark made famous by the Kennedy assassination. The scene was chaotic, with officers with automatic rifles on the street corners. “Everyone just started running, Devante Odom, 21, told The Dallas Morning News. “We lost touch with two of our friends just trying to get out of there.

Carlos Harris, who lives downtown, told the newspaper that the shooters “were strategic. It was tap, tap, pause. Tap, tap pause, he said. Brown said police don’t have a motivation for the attacks or any information on the suspects. He said they “triangulated in the downtown area where the protesters were marching and had “some knowledge of the route they would take. Video posted on social media appeared to show a gunman at ground level exchanging fire with a police officer who was then felled. Rawlings said one of wounded officers had a bullet go through his leg as three members of his squad were fatally shot around him. “He felt that people don’t understand the danger of dealing with a protest, said Rawlings, who spoke to the surviving officer. “And that’s what I learned from this. We care so much about people protesting, and I think it’s their rights. But how we handle it can do a lot of things. One of the things it can do is put our police officers in harm’s way, and we have to be very careful about doing that. Early Friday morning, dozens of officers filled the corridor of the emergency room at Baylor Medical Center, where other wounded officers were taken. The mayor and police chief were seen arriving there. Four of the officers who were killed were with the Dallas Police Department, a spokesman said. One was a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer. The agency said in a statement that 43-year-old officer Brent Thompson was the first officer killed in the line of duty since the agency formed a police department in 1989. “Our hearts are broken, the statement said. Theresa Williams said one of the wounded civilians was her sister, 37year-old Shetamia Taylor. The identity of the other civilian casualty was not immediately known. Mayor Rawlings said he did not believe either had life-threatening injuries. Williams said her sister was shot in the right calf and had thrown herself over her four sons, ages 12 to 17, when the shooting began. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to offer “whatever assistance the City of Dallas needs. “In times like this we must remember — and emphasize — the importance of uniting as Americans, Abbott said. Other protests across the U.S. on Thursday were peaceful, including in New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia. In Minnesota, where Castile was shot, hundreds of protesters marched in the rain from a vigil to the governor’s official residence. President Barack Obama said America is “horrified over the shootings and there’s no possible justification for the attacks. He called them “vicious, calculated and despicable. Speaking from Warsaw, Poland, where he was meeting with leaders of the European Union and attending a NATO summit, the president asked all Americans to pray for the fallen officers and their families and said the nation should express its gratitude to law enforcement. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which tracks on-duty deaths, said the fatal shootings made Thursday the deadliest day for U.S. police since Sept. 11. ___ Associated Press writers Jamie Stengle, Paul Weber and Emily Schmall in Dallas; Amy Shafer, Sarah Rankin and Benjamin Dashley in Chicago; and Kathleen Hennessey in Warsaw, Poland, contributed to this report.
School Board From 1-A
Here’s how the board voted: For: Ray Bernard, Mary Breaud, Dennis Chiasson, Marian Fertitta, Ronald Pere and Greg Stall Against: Louis Thibodaux, Brooke Huddleston, Richmond Boyd, Gary Foret, Julie Breaux, Clyde Duplantis, Ann Sanamo and Calvin Duet Pere, who represents Raceland, proposed the reduction, citing decreasing state dollars and tax revenues as well as rising costs. His original proposal would align the nine districts with the Lafourche Parish Council districts and would piggyback an election on the issue with an existing election to save costs to the board. If the board had decided to drop four members, it would directly save more than $39,000 per year, Business Manager Don Gaudet said. The number rises to more than $58,000 if it drops six members and more than $77,000 if it drops eight. Pere estimates the board would save about $105,000 per year if indirect costs are added in and more than $1 million every decade. But critics of the idea say 15 is the right number for the length of the parish - almost 100 miles from top to bottom. Others say that consolidating the board could potentially leave areas like Chackbay and south Lafourche under represented. Those against the proposal also cited the diversity of the board for opinions and the size of committees to give the board a better view on what needs to be done. “If we went by the Parish Council, there would only be two councilmen representing the 10th

Ward. We’d be dropping from four members to two members, said south Lafourche representative Calvin Duet. “In the past, I’ve had board members representing Bayou Blue living in the Country Club of Thibodaux. I don’t feel that’s adequate enough. I want to make sure Bayou Blue is well represented. I want to make sure that Bayou Blue is represented by someone from Bayou Blue, member Clyde Duplantis said. Board member Brooke Huddleston said she understands how some parts of the parish feel when it comes to representation in government. “The south of the parish does feel disconnected sometimes and that representation they have down the bayou is very pertinent to each and every person in that area of South Lafourche. They feel like they do have someone to talk to. They feel like they do have someone to go to, she said. Board members have been looking for ways to ease up pressure on the budget as they face an approximately $890,000 cut in state money, even with an $85,000 jump in Minimum Foundation Program money. They are projecting a $3 million decrease in
3-A
sales tax revenues for next year. Board member Dennis Chiasson suggested cutting the budget in other ways if reducing the number of board members was meant to cut the budget. Board Attorney Pat Amedee told the board at the finance committee meeting on June 22 it’s unclear whether it can legally decrease in size. There are few state statutes regarding reducing the size of a school board and most were written in 1968 to accommodate for changes stemming from integrating the schools. One state statute, Amedee said, requires school boards to be the largest size they can possibly be. None of the statutes reference decreasing in size. Terrebonne Parish voters reduced the size of their School Board from 15 members to nine in 2001, but Amedee said it’s unclear whether their home rule charter allowed for the reduction or if they are operating illegally. In 2012, board members pitched the idea to drop to nine members and follow the Parish Council district lines but were outnumbered almost 2-to-1.

HARAHAN, La. (AP) — A Harahan woman has been arrested after police say she stole and tore a Confederate flag. Harahan police say that 18-year-old Madelyn Christina was caught on surveillance video Monday stealing a Confederate battle flag from a flag pole in
front of a neighbor’s house. When contacted by police, Christina told officers that she stole the flag because it was racist. Kentucky and Mississippi joined the coalition challenging the directive to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. The coalition also includes Oklahoma, Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Maine, Louisiana, Utah, Arizona and Georgia. police shocked him with a stun gun. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Heather and Steven Aiosa woke up early Tuesday and saw 31-yearold Robert James Alcalde in their bedroom. The newspaper quotes Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri as saying Alcalde was acting paranoid, and crouched in the corner before throwing things off shelves. Steven Aiosa grabbed a .22-caliber rifle and walked with his wife outside to load it. The gun malfunctioned and he went back inside to get the machete. The report says Alcalde went outside and tackled Heather Aiosa, and that’s when her husband struck the man with the machete. Arriving deputies fired a stun gun at him six times. By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Catholic Bishops and Utah State Officials address pornography epidemic Last November, the U.S. Catholic Bishops published a pastoral letter on the morality of pornography. We would expect that from a religious group. What was more surprising is Utah’s Governor and Legislature publically acknowledged that: “Pornography is a public health hazard leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts and societal harms.” They further stated that: “Pornography is contributing to the hypersexualization of teens, and even prepubescent children, in our society. Due to advances in technology and the universal availability of the Internet, young children are exposed to what used to be called hard core, but is now considered mainstream pornography at an alarming rate.” They continue, “The average age of exposure to pornography is now 11 to 12 years of age. This early exposure is leading to low self-esteem and body image disorders, an increase in problematic sexual activity at younger ages, and an increased desire among adolescents to engage in risky sexual behavior.” The Utah State leaders continue, “Because pornography treats women as objects and commodities for the viewer’s use, it teaches girls they are to be used and teaches boys to be users. Pornography normalizes violence and abuse of women and children; pornography treats women and children as objects and often depicts rape and abuse as if they are harmless.” The Utah authorities stated, “Recent research shows that pornography is potentially biologically addictive, which means the user requires more novelty, often as more shocking material, to be satisfied; this biological addiction leads to increasing themes of risky sexual behaviors, extreme degradation, violence, and child sexual abuse images and child pornography.” They also state that “pornography use is linked to lessening desire in young men to marry, dissatisfaction in marriage, and infidelity; this link shows that pornography has a detrimental effect on the family unit; and overcoming pornography’s harms is beyond the capability of the afflicted individual to address alone.” In conclusion, “The Legislature and the Governor recognize the need for education, prevention, research, and policy change at the community and societal level to address the pornography epidemic that is harming the people of our state and nation.” The Catholic Bishops reminded us, “Men and women discover the call to love written in their very bodies. The human person is a unity of soul and body, and the body shares in the dignity of the image of God. The body reveals or expresses the person. It expresses in a visible way one’s invisible soul and manifests one’s masculine or feminine identity.” “Because of the beautiful meaning and dignity communicated by our bodies, we should treat our bodies with the greatest respect. We, and therefore our bodies, are not meant to be used but loved. St. John Paul II taught the opposite of love is not hate but rather using a person, as if he or she were an object. To love others is to recognize them as the gift they are, to seek what is truly good and best for them, and never to use them and thereby objectify
them as something less than persons. The body, then, is not raw, biological matter open to manipulation but is rather inseparable from who we are.” Chastity may be “an unpopular word,” but as Pope Francis has indicated, love is chaste. “All of us in life have gone through moments in which this virtue has been very difficult, but it is in fact the way of genuine love, of a love that can give life, which does not seek to use the other for one’s own pleasure.” Continued next week.
