Antique store a labor of love for former prosecutor By SCOTT YOSHONIS The Houma Courier

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — After a career in the legal profession, some of that as a Lafourche Parish prosecutor, Diana Sanders has found a new calling. Sanders opened an antique store, Back In The Day, 825 Jackson St., Thibodaux, in July 2018 essentially as a hobby in her retirement. While opening a business may not sound as relaxing, as say golfing or shuffleboard, Sanders said it’s a perfect fit for her. “This is a piece of cake for me,” Sanders said. “I was an attorney for 44 years. I did public defender work, and I was a prosecutor for 16 years, so it was very stressful. This is stress-free, I don’t stress over anything.” Sanders started out in the antiques business while she was still working as a prosecutor, setting up booths at local flea markets to sell and buy her wares. The small shop is now filled with items that Sanders hopes evokes a sense of nostalgia in her customers. There are large assortments of old toys and relics from a bygone era of the oil and See Antiques Page 2-A

With the spring inshore shrimp season officially closed, distributor Dean Blanchard said he’s probably received half of the normal haul from the shrimpers. “It was a disaster,” he said of the season, which closed June 28. Record rainfall in the Midwest caused water levels on the Mississippi to rise and stay high for several months. The Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre spillway twice this year — for the first time since it was created — dumping freshwater out of the river and causing it to inundate typically brackish or salty waters. The process displaced the brown shrimp. Blanchard said the shrimpers had fresh water not only to the east with the Bonnet Carre but the west from the Atchafalaya River, limiting where they could travel to try to find more shrimp. “We were going backwards,” he said. “Some were spending more in fuel than what you got in shrimp.” At a certain point, Blanchard stopped giving shrimpers credit toward diesel for their boats. He said, “I can’t afford to finance everybody.” As of June 28, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported a 66 percent decrease in brown shrimp catches in the Atchafalaya Basin and a 50 percent decrease in the Barataria and Terrebonne basins. The Pontchartrain and Calcasieu basins showed the largest decreases in the state at 80 percent and 86 percent, respectively. See Shrimp Page 3-A

Parish president names interim administrator By Julia Arenstam Daily Comet Staff Writer

Shortly before the Lafourche Parish Council Tommy Lasseigne meeting Tuesday night, Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle presented a familiar name as the new interim parish administrator. Cantrelle announced his appointment of project manager Tommy Lasseigne to the temporary job, stating, “Tommy has been reliable throughout my term as Lafourche Parish president and together, we have moved major projects forward.” Cantrelle said this is the fourth appointment he’s given to Lasseigne. Lasseigne served as the Human Resources and Finance director from January to October 2016 when he resigned the post. He then became a

parish project manager. Lasseigne was later appointed as interim parish administrator from February to June 2017 and again from February to August 2018, when he was removed by the Parish Council. The need for another administrator arose after Tim Vedros resigned the position last month. Last week, Cantrelle said he would consider making an interim appointment, but wasn’t sure who it would be. Applications for the permanent job closed July 3. Neither Cantrelle nor the Parish Council addressed the nomination at Tuesday’s meeting. Cantrelle did, however, get into a dispute with Golden Meadow Mayor Joey Bouziga over $100,000 that has been budgeted for the town’s seawall project. See Lasseigne Page 3-A

GLPC, other local agancies to participate in full-scale Coast Guard training exercise

gas business like oil cans and gas cans from years gone by. Perhaps counter intuitively, Sanders said she has more men who come into her shop than women and keeps about half of her floor space to cater to them. “They’re looking for old license plates, old farm equipment, old tools,” Sanders said. “This whole side (of the store) has a lot of old things, tool boxes, fishing lures, trains, things like that.” Sanders said she would rather sell items familiar to her customers that bring back fond memories of childhood, rather than going for the high-dollar-value antiques. But that doesn’t mean she sells junk. “I don’t like plastic. I don’t like anything past about 1990,” she said. “I try to get things from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, and I’ve even had things from the late 1800s and early 1900s. But those things are getting very hard to find.” But find them she will. Sanders said her favorite part of her new endeavor is not selling things but looking for them. “It’s more about the

portation Security Act of 2002. This full-scale exercise will bring together federal, state, local law enforcement, and emergency management partner agencies in addition to the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) and Greater Lafourche Port Commission Harbor hunt than anything else,” she said. “Even when I was little, I always collected. I used to go find old Coke bottles. I’d look for them, I’d dig for them. The selling end of it is boring to me, but you have to do it.” Sanders said she often buys things from customers who walk through her front door looking to sell. As a result, she has no shortage of inventory, with five storage units full of antiques waiting their turn. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. “If it wasn’t fun for me, I wouldn’t be doing it,” Sanders said. “And as soon as it becomes work and not fun, I’m out of here. But I love it, I really do.” Back In The Day is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. ___

Simultaneously, the GLPC will be testing its Harbor Police response and C4 Incident Management System. of their own computer, but if you wish to attend in person, a limited number of computer terminals will be available on the date of the tax sale on the third floor of the Fred H. Block Building, located at 200 West 2nd Street in Thibodaux. These computer terminals will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis. An LPSO representative will be on hand to answer any questions and direct you to a computer terminal. A tax title sale is the sale of properties that have delinquent taxes due. The tax titles for these properties are sold to the public for the amount of the delinquent taxes due, plus any accrued interest, penalties, costs and other statutory impositions. The tax title sale is a “low bid wins” style auction in which the property is sold to the purchaser willing to bid on the least percent ownership interest in the property. Winning bidders of the tax sale are expected to pay for their purchases within 72 hours of the close of the auction. Payment must be made in full, and all sales are final. Property owners must remit property tax payments by 4:00 p.m. on July 23, to avoid having their property subject to sale. Bills not paid in full by this time will result in the property being sold at the tax sale on July 24. Tax payments can be made at the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Administration Office (200 Canal Boulevard, Thibodaux) or at the South Lafourche Sub-station (102 W. 91st Street, Cut Off). For additional information, property owners can call the Thibodaux office at (985) 449-4431 or the Galliano office at (985) 632-5844. This auction and all future tax sales can be viewed online at www.LPSO.net. The link is just below the gold-colored “Tax Sale” graphic on the LPSO homepage. Using the convenient search options, bidders can set the parameters for any property that falls within their interests and budget.

Matthews and Dupre took Courteaux’s body and his truck. They picked up a 16-year-old male and transported Courteaux’s body to Morgan City where they left him near a wooded area. Dupre was booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on the charge of Second Degree Murder, and his bail is set at $1 million. The 16-yearold was charged with Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder, and he was placed into the Lafourche Parish Juvenile Justice Facility in Thibodaux.

Shrimp From 1-A

Venice-based shrimper Acy Cooper, president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, said he started to catch some “brownies” toward the end of the season, but the season was a “flop” overall. “We didn’t make money with it, just enough to get by,” he said. He ended the season catching about twothirds less than normal. To find saltier water, Cooper said, shrimpers in his area would probably have to go out 100 miles or encroach on someone else’s area. “A lot of boats aren’t big enough to make those long travels down here,” he said. “And no matter where you’re going, you’re going to be on top of someone else. It’s just a bad situation.” In June, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards sent a request for a declaration of a fisheries disaster to the federal government in an attempt to get relief for all of the fishing interests along the state’s coast. Blanchard and Cooper said they were hopeful that the request would result in some money for the people in the industry. Cooper also serves on the Shrimp Task Force and the joint task force working group that includes representatives from the oyster, crab and fish task forces. He said members of each task force plan to travel

to Washington, D.C., July 15-18 to talk with Congress about supporting the fisheries disaster declaration. He said most shrimpers understand the necessity for opening the spillway to save others from flooding. “We know it had to happen,” said Cooper. “It just kills us in the mean time.” Blanchard said he’ll probably have to lay off some of his workers soon, saying he can’t afford to pay them with all the credit he’s given and the lack of shrimp. “I don’t see anything else to do,” he said. Should the fisheries receive aid, it’s unlikely that it would be distributed within the next year. According to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, a fisheries disaster declaration requires the loss to be observed over 12 months. “Given that the extent of damage to Louisiana’s fisheries cannot be fully determined until floodwaters recede and a 12-month evaluation can be completed, LDWF cautions against any premature assessment,” according to the release. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission passed a resolution recently requesting for the department to continue to collect data to determine the loss and offer its support of the governor’s disaster declaration request. Despite the difficulties, Cooper said he never stopped going out to try to catch shrimp. “When you’re a fisherman, it doesn’t matter. You just go,” he said. “The day you don’t go could be the day you get your haul.” Blanchard and Cooper said that if the water recedes in the next few weeks, the shrimpers could still see a productive inshore fall season. Cooper said they’ve seen some positive signs with the amount of small white shrimp. “It all depends on the river,” he said. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Halle Parker can be reached at hparker@houmatoday.com or 857-2204. Bouziga told the council that Cantrelle promised to issue him the money on several occasions but never followed through. Cantrelle said he never made any definitive promises to the mayor and had parish Risk Manager Brent Abadie present a slide show about how much money the parish has given to the town over the past three years. The parish officials said the parish has covered $155,000 in garbage services for the town and that the town’s police department issues “predatory speeding tickets” to drive up revenue. Cantrelle asked Bouziga to present proof that the money was ever promised to the town before he would issue a check. Councilman Daniel Lorraine said the previous council committed $100,000 to the town. The money was voted on again by the current council, he said. “It should’ve been paid,” Lorraine said. “How many councils is it

going to take to give these people their money?” “In five months and 22 days, you’ll get your money,” Councilman Jerry Jones said, referring to the upcoming elections. The council also approved budget amendments and contracts for three library system projects: the Thibodaux branch addition, multibranch roofing and minor renovations projects and a system-wide upgrade to the library’s catalog software. For the Thibodaux project, the council approved a $250,000 budget amendment due to higher contingency costs and awarded the construction contract to B.E.T. Construction, Inc. for roughly $2.6 million. Members also approved a $100,000 budget amendment for the multi-branch project to cover the full bid cost of $557,200 awarded to Foret Contracting Group LLC. That project includes small expansions at the Raceland and Gheens branches, removing some walls at the Choctaw, Raceland, Bayou Blue and Larose libraries to create more

internal space and replacing the roofs at the Choctaw, Bayou Blue and Raceland branches. The new project on the list is a system-wide upgrade to the library’s catalog system. Library Director Laura Sanders said the upgrade is necessary because the current system is barely operating after a software update. The estimated cost for that project is $135,000. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam @houmatoday.com. Follow her on Twitter at @JuliaArenstam.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd In the 1980’s some doctors and nurses refused to treat patients with AIDS

A new documentary tells the story of America’s first inpatient unit at San Francisco Hospital dedicated to the care of patients with AIDS. Nurse Cliff Morrison helped create Ward “5B” in 1983, and worked with Dr. Paul Volberding to give patients compassionate care. I listened to Terry Gross’ interview of Morrison and Volberding on National Public Radio’s Fresh Air. Their experiences with this new “disease” brought back memories of my first dealing with an AIDS patient. When AIDS became known in the ‘80’s, even those in the medical field did not understand the complexity of this deadly disease. People were unenlightened and scared. Cliff Morrison remembers being appalled by what he saw happening at the Hospital: “I would go in patients’ rooms and you could tell that they hadn’t had a bath,” he says. “They weren’t being taken care of.” At the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980’s, the disease was considered a death sentence. No one was sure what caused it or how it was spread. Some doctors and nurses refused to treat patients with the disease; others protected themselves by wearing full body suits. Morrison organized a team of healthcare providers to open Ward 5B at San Francisco Hospital. This medical team encouraged patients to make their rooms like home, and allowed families and partners to visit whenever they could. They comforted patients by touching them, and would even sneak in pets. Dr. Volberding talked about his own struggle with AIDS. He said that he wasn’t worried about himself; his nightmare was the possibility of passing the disease onto his children. He had two young sons. The medical field knew that someone could contract AIDS through bodily fluids but they did not know what that included: kissing, touching, hugging? No! They didn’t know what we know now. Today, antiretroviral medicines allow people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to live long, productive lives. We also know that transmission is limited to sexual activity and blood contamination. The fear in dealing with AIDS patients is no longer a serious problem. In the late 80’s I was asked to go to someone’s home to give a person with AIDS the Sacrament of the Sick. I heard of AIDS but like most people, I did not know all the effects of the virus. I knew it was deadly and that this person was probably going to die. Much misinformation and homophobic fears were going around. A well-known priest from New Orleans wrote that AIDS was God’s punishment for homosexual behavior. I admit I was fearful but I also

knew that I had to be Christ to this person and his family. I asked myself, what would Jesus do? The AIDS in Jesus’ day was leprosy. In Matthew’s gospel the author tells us how Jesus dealt with this fearful disease. “A leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.’ He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’ Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” (Matt. 8:2-3) I thought about this passage and concluded that I needed to treat this person like Jesus would. So when I went to his home, I tried to put aside my fears. I wanted to treat this person as a human being who needed God’s healing. We talked for a while and then I administered the

Sacrament of the Sick. Part of the ceremony involves putting my hands on the person’s head and silently calling

down God’s healing power. Then I anointed his head and hands with the Oil of the Sick. He eventfully died but the
