Applause filled the meeting room after the Lafourche Parish School Board unanimously approved a salary increase for all school employees Wednesday night. After freezing pay for three years, the provision of a step increase for all employees will coincide with the first state-financed raise for teachers and support staff in several years. Several board members expressed their excitement that the school district’s finance department found space in the budget for the raise, thanking the superintendent and the staff. “With the state raise and this, it’s not a whole lot, but at least it shows or teachers that we do have their best interest,” said board member Marian Fertitta.

Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou Tourism up 3rd consecutive year

Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou Tourism announced this week that tourism spending in Lafourche Parish is up for the third consecutive year. “I am very excited by our latest tourism and economic impact figures,” states president and CEO of Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou Tourism Timothy P. Bush. “The three years of growth speaks to our ability to promote our destination to visitors who value the experiences our destination has to offer. These numbers support our belief that more and more visitors continue to see Lafourche Parish as a destination worth visiting for our outdoor, food, and cul-

tural experiences.” Research conducted by the University of New Orleans Hospitality Research Center shows that visitors to Lafourche Parish spent $77 million. For Louisiana and Lafourche Parish, those visitors generated $9.9 million in state and local taxes. Without tourism, nearly 42,000 Lafourche Parish households would have to contribute an additional $275 per household in taxes for the year. In 2018, tourism spending supported 1,110 jobs in the parish, a nine percent increase over 2017. “We are pleased by these latest tourism numbers,” stated BoardPage of 3-A DiSee Tourism

Louisiana pushes presidential primary back to April in 2020

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana will shuffle election dates in 2020, moving the presidential primary from March to April because of Easter -related scheduling conflicts. Lawmakers made the adjustment in an

elections bill sent to the governor. Under the change, Louisiana’s presidential and municipal primary will be held April 4 next year, rather than its originally scheduled March 7 date. After 2020, the primary will revert back to the first Saturday in March. The secretary of state’s office said the municipal general election, which comes five weeks after the primary, would have fallen on Easter weekend. Moving all elections up a week would have pushed Louisiana’s presidential primary to Feb. 29, the same day as South Carolina’s primary. The secretary of state’s office says national political party rules forbid that. House Bill 563: www.legis.la.gov

Cantrelle said. When reached on his cellphone Tuesday afternoon, Vedros declined to provide any comment, saying he submitted his resignation letter. “You have no comment from me, zero, none,” Vedros said. In his resignation letter, obtained by The Courier and Daily Comet through a public records request, Vedros said the job conflicted with his role as a deacon in the Catholic Church. Because the church prohibits a deacon from holding public office, Vedros said he “would be unable to fulfill the duties of Parish President as specified in the Home Rule Charter.” “After much soul searching and prayer, I have concluded that it is not a good fit for me to attempt to fulfill my commitments to the Church at the same time as performing the duties of Parish Administrator,” Vedros wrote. “There-

fore, I am compelled to tender my resignation from service in the Government of Lafourche Parish effective immediately.” He thanked Cantrelle and the council for appointing him and said he regretting having to resign. Vedros was appointed to the position in early February and approved by the council later that month. He was the fourth confirmed parish administrator under Cantrelle’s administration. He was the fifth nomination presented to the council since the last administrator, Leif Haas, resigned in February 2018.

passage. House Republicans’ efforts to undo parts of the 2018 tax compromise stalled in the Senate. Industrybacked bids to roll back changes Edwards made to a property tax break for manufacturers failed to win support. GAMBLING Lawmakers refused to legalize sports betting. Although Louisiana voters in 47 parishes agreed in November to legalize online fantasy sports contests for cash prizes, efforts failed to pass the tax and regulatory provisions required to start the betting. MARRIAGE AGE Sixteen will be set as the minimum age for someone to marry in Louisiana, with those under 18 needing parental and judicial permission. Lawmakers also agreed to prohibit anyone 16 or 17 years old from marrying anyone who is three years or more older. DEATH PENALTY The Senate voted down a proposal to end capital punishment, and the sponsor of a similar House measure shelved it. Senators narrowly scrapped a measure to shield the identity of drug suppliers for executions, an effort aimed at restarting long-stalled lethal injections. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Lawmakers passed a measure aimed at making state officials pay a share of their sexual harassment settlements, rather than relying entirely on taxpayer dollars. They barred state employees from including nondisclosure clauses in sexual misconduct settlements that involve public funds. PAY ISSUES Edwards again failed to win support for a minimum wage hike and equal pay protections. A

proposal to give municipalities the authority to set their own minimum wage rates stalled. Lawmakers gave pay raises to judges, sheriffs, district attorneys and assistant district attorneys. OTHER BILLS Louisiana will join 44 other states in creating statewide regulations for ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, aimed at expanding availability. Lawmakers enacted new penalties for parents who harass referees at their children’s sporting events. Louisiana won’t raise its legal smoking age from 18 to 21. The state won’t restrict new highway billboards. Louisiana’s gun laws won’t be strengthened or loosened. Hank Williams’ iconic “Jambalaya (On the Bayou)” won’t become an official state song. ___ Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte

The board also approved the return of a contract day to employees on a 185-plus day contract. It was removed last year as a cost-saving measure and was the equivalent of a pay cut for those employees. Lafourche Parish Association of Educators President Blake Bogan said the organization stood behind the superintendent’s request to add both the step increase and the contract day to the proposed 2019-20 budget. “I’m sure they will all greatly appreciate this,” he said of the teachers in the school district. According to today’s agenda, the step increase will cost about

$485,000, and the return of the contract day will cost $81,000. Once passed, Superintendent Louis Voiron thanked the board for its support and assured them that the school district staff understood the need to remain fiscally responsible and maintain a healthy fund balance. “We do feel like we’ll be able to hold it going forward,” he said. While applauding the move, most board members noted that this was just a start on what was needed after freezing pay for three years. “I look forward to the day that we can catch up on all the past steps because they are so deserving of this and so much more,” board member Tyler Dufrene said. When Voiron introduced the proposal in May, he said he also hoped to slowly see more counselors added to the elementary schools. The cuts to positions over the past few years meant that there were some schools that shared two counselors to serve 800 to 1,000 students. A final draft of the

stated Board of Directors Chair, Jeremy Punch. “These numbers prove that tourism does add value to our community through the revenue it generates and as well as adding quality of life here in Lafourche Parish.” Louisiana welcomed 51.3 million visitors in 2018, representing an increase of nine percent over the 47.1 million visitors reported by DK Shifflet in April 2017. Visitors spent $18.8 billion, an increase of seven percent over 2017. The travel and tourism industry generated $1.9 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2018.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Love always demands the best from us, and brings out the best in us

In 2010 some newspapers ran a story about “Curly” Veith, a rich man and a Christian, who died at aged 95. When his business was flourishing, Curly said, “I used to lie awake at night thinking of the hungry and homeless children all over the world. So I decided to give all my money away to help them!” He has given away more than $23 million! He has set up Mission Enterprise Limited to channel funds to worthy causes everywhere – American Indians in Colorado, street kids in Bangkok, water wells in East Africa, land for a school in Australia. In addition, with the courage of his convictions, he has contacted other rich business people and challenged them to give generously to needy people and projects. Clearly this elderly man has taken to heart Jesus’ message to his followers the night before he died when he said: “I give you a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” The love that imitates the love of Jesus for others is a practical, unconditional, down-toearth kind of love. It involves a compassionate love that is self-forgetting and self-sacrificing so that others might be free – free to be good, kind, unselfish, generous and loving persons too. Jesus showed us this type of love for people in so many wonderful ways – in kindness, compassion, generosity, patience, perseverance, endurance, faithfulness and forgiveness. There was no limit to what his love would give. True love is the opposite of selfishness. Selfishness confines us, keeps us shut in. It builds barriers, even walls, between others and us. What frees us is caring about others and caring for others, being friends, being sisters and brothers, being good neighbors. In short, it’s love alone that frees us from the bondage of selfishness. It is our love for others that keeps the great love of Jesus for people alive in our world today. An American journalist, watching Mother Teresa caring for a man with gangrene, remarked to her, “I wouldn’t do that for a million dollars.” Mother Teresa replied, “Neither would I do it for that amount, but I do it for love of God.” That should be our motivation. Let’s face it. Loving

our neighbor can be difficult and demanding. In the face of Islamic terrorism, or in time of war, we are strongly tempted to dehumanize the enemy and regard them as not part of the human family, and unworthy of our love and respect. Still, Jesus’ commandment to love, and his own example of forgiving those who crucified him, constantly call us to reconsider things and seek reconciliation rather than total victory. It is only when we work with God’s grace that we can truly love others unconditionally. It is only by living every day close to Jesus that we can love as Jesus loved. If we do not, we will be relying only on our human efforts alone, and we will love with another type of love but not the unconditional love Jesus asked for when he

FATHER’S DAY MEMORIALS

said, “I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you.” Love always demands the best from us, and brings out the best in us. Being loved gives us a surprising energy and courage. Love makes us fruitful, productive, strong and constant in doing good. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, famous for her work on the stages of dying, has written, “Love is the flame that warms our soul, energizes our spirit and supplies passion to our lives. It’s our connection to God and to one another.” Freedom from selfishness and freedom to love and care for others, that’s what life is all about! That’s the only way. So Jesus strongly insists, “Love one another, as I have loved you.”
