Larose teen pleads guilty to manslaughter

A Larose teenager accused of shooting another youth in what was described as a game of Russian roulette pled guilty as charged to manslaughter Wednesday afternoon. Dejon Caine was W charged with the killing of Christopher Morris, 17, on October 22, 2016. Caine was one of a group of teenagers, which also included the victim, who were playing with a rusty .38 revolver when the killing occurred. Caine, who was also 17 at the time of the shooting, gave a statement to law enforcement and admitted to the killing, claiming that the shooting was accidental. The youths were allegedly pulling the trigger of the revolver at random before Caine took possession of the firearm. He contended that he did not know the gun would discharge when he pointed it at Morris and pulled the trigger. His statement regarding the game was corroborated by other participants. “This truly was a senseless crime,” said District Attorney Kristine Russell. “Firearms demand respect, and the recklessness of this killing demonstrates that. I know a lot of people are excited. It’s something everyone is looking forward to in our athletic department.” Local coaches say this is a long time coming for Lafourche Parish. Central Lafourche football coach Keith Menard was one of the most outspoken champions for the field turf cause because his field has been depleted heavily in recent years. Natural grass experts say that our natural grass surfaces were hosting sometimes two or three times more athletic events than they should each year to maintain healthy grass through the wear and tear. The local fields host high school varsity football, junior varsity football, freshman football, soccer, track and field, band practices/festivals and also PE classes from general students throughout the year. I have to say that I am very disappointed with our state Senators, Congressmen and Governor. I cannot believe that they would consider cutting off 37,000 elderly and disabled people from health coverage to balance the state budget. The Democrats and Republicans cannot see eye to eye on anything these days, whether it’s at the local, state or federal level. It is time to put politics aside and do the right thing for the people of Louisiana. They can’t

Fight From 1-A

The fight reportedly took place in a downtown Baton Rouge bar Tuesday night because the two had a dispute over legislation. Bishop took to the House floor on personal privilege to comment on the altercation. “I truly apologize if I did anything to upset y’all or make y’all look bad because the integrity of this body is one thing that I cherish and one thing I hold very dear,” Bishop said. “I feel like it was unbecoming of a gentleman and unbecoming for a member of this House,” Bishop added. According to The News Star, police were called but no arrests were made. Bishop referred to the incident as a “ g e n t l e m a n ’ s disagreement” and mentioned that a couple hundred years ago men used to settle disputes with dueling guns. “I apologize, and I would like to say I would hope it wouldn’t happen again,” Bishop said in his closing comments. “The next time it’ll just be dueling guns.” Chabert apologized for the altercation on the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon. “Rep. Bishop and I are like brothers, and we feel very passionate about the issues we both

agree on what to cut or what new tax to pass to increase revenues. I would like to try and help. First of all, the state’s highest priority should be to take care of our elderly and disabled people who cannot take care of themselves. I recommend keeping the temporary tax that is scheduled to expire on July 1 in place for an additional 18 months. It is a simple common sense solution and we wouldn’t have to spend additional hundreds of thousands of dollars at a special session to figure it out. Buddy Cantrelle Larose, LA

have fought so hard for, and we are going to continue to fight,” Chabert said. “Every now and then, like brothers, you go to a place you shouldn’t go. We’re both better men than that.” According to the initial report from The News Star, Bishop said Chabert “punched him several times” and that he did not fight back. “I humbly apologize to the people in this chamber, the people across the hall and the citizens of the state of Louisiana.” Chabert said. “There aren’t many words you can say when you find yourself in situation like this that really can redeem you,” Chabert acknowledged. “I think that we can get past this.” Chabert stated that he and Bishop will remain friends and that he is ready to get back to the important issues up for consideration in the final days of the regular session. LSU Tram now proposed to be 10-mile express bus route

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The plans for a 3-mile tram between Louisiana State University and downtown Baton Rouge have morphed into a 10mile express bus route. The Advocate reports the new plan was announced Tuesday by the Capital Area Transit System chairman, Jim Brandt. Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said in February that a streetcar wouldn’t be built along Nicholson Drive. Instead, she promised a system of bus rapid transit that would serve a larger number of area residents. The Capital Area Transit System already had plans to build bus rapid transit routes in another area, and Broome decided it should oversee the new project. The new plan would run the express route from LSU to Airline Highway and would cost up to $50 million. Information from: The Advocate, http://theadvocate.com

College-bound public high school grads on the rise

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana education officials say 23,517 public high school students who graduated in 2017 enrolled in college in the fall. That’s a record for

the state. Tuesday’s news release from the Department of Education says it’s an increase of more than 500 from the previous year; and it’s up by more than 3,000 since 2012. The department said school systems in Calcasieu, Lafayette, Livingston, Orleans and Bossier parishes account for more than half the increase in recent years. Those parishes represent 22 percent of graduates but 31 percent of the increase in college enrollment from 2012 to 2017. The number of college-going high school graduates deemed economically disadvantaged increased by 56 percent over those five years; and the number of collegebound minority graduates increased by 16 percent. ___

Louisiana’s riverboat casinos could soon be heading to land

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers have agreed to let the state’s riverboat casinos move onshore and rework their gambling space. A 54-41 House vote Tuesday sent the bill by Republican Sen. Ronnie Johns to the governor. The Senate previously voted 22-14 for the measure. Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to sign the changes into law. Riverboat casinos will be allowed to conduct gambling activities within 1,200 feet on land from their licensed berth and will no longer need an operable paddlewheel. Budget From 1-A

Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry, the Metairie Republican who handles the budget in the House, urged support. He said the document will show constituents where cuts would fall, as they determine if they want lawmakers to pass taxes. “Now it becomes real,” Henry said. “The priorities aren’t driven from inside this building. They’re driven from what you hear when you go back home.” Edwards said the budget would be devastating. He wants lawmakers to pass $648 million in taxes to stop the cuts, which are driven by the loss of temporary taxes set to expire July 1. The TOPS program would cover only 70 percent of college tuition. Louisiana’s food stamp program would end because the state couldn’t afford to administer it. Meat inspections done by the agriculture department would cease. Oversight of the state’s veterans’ cemeteries would shutter. Parks and museums would close. Inmates would be booted from local sheriff’s jails and sent to overcrowded state prisons. Financing for college campuses would be slashed. House Democratic leader Robert Johnson urged rejection, saying lawmakers should wait

until the special session that opens Tuesday to craft a budget. “We have a real problem. But we will not solve a real problem with pretend budgets, with pretend solutions. Because we don’t represent pretend people,” said Johnson, of Marksville. Senators who crafted the budget said they didn’t want it to take effect as is, but to demonstrate the need for more money. They said they prioritized lifesaving services for people who are elderly and developmentally disabled, who had been slated to take deep cuts to their programs in the initial House version of the budget. They also refused the House proposal that would have shut down the safety-net hospitals. The health department is one of the only agencies that would get more money next year, under the budget headed to the governor. About $1.4 billion in temporary taxes passed by lawmakers in 2015 and 2016 to plug budget holes are expiring with the start of the new budget year. With other

Turf

Sunday, May 20, 2018 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

From 1-A

In addition to that, middle schools also use the fields for their sporting events, as well. What happens is the fields take on water during August, September and October when the local climate is hot, humid and wet. Because there are so many games scheduled in those months, players tear the grass down to mud and the natural grass never has time to heal. Playing on such a barren surface makes players more prone to ankle/leg injuries because footing is less secure. In a game between Thibodaux and Central Lafourche played years back on a muddy field, coaches estimated than more than 10 players left the game with ankle sprain and/or foot/leg injuries. “It’s not safe,” Menard said. “Our fields just can’t keep up with what we’re asking of them. We need the carpet. It’s for our kids. They’re the ones who are suffering because of this more than anything.

They deserve more. This benefits all sports.” The turf should remedy a lot of issues of the past. It will have underground drainage, which will stop ponding, which will allow for quicker resumption of play on wet days. It also is hands-off. Once it’s laid down, local coaches will not have to do anything to it except vacuum it occasionally. The machine for cleaning is included in the school board’s purchase – one for each school. By not having to tend to the field, local

5-A

schools say they will save thousands each year in maintenance expenses they used to have to incur like fuel for mowing, sod and chemicals to make the grass grow properly. There also will be no more painting. Each school is getting a predesigned field which will feature the team’s mascot prominently on midfield and the school’s name in the end zones. “We think it’s a nobrainer,” Menard said. “We’re just happy the public gave us that support and now we can make it a reality.”

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd

Real or authentic life is the life of a person who lives in Christ

Throughout the Gospel of John the author gives us many other images where Jesus says “I am.” Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” “I am the Good Shepherd,” “I am the living water.” These wonderful images talk about the necessity of our being nourished and protected by Jesus. Yet the image of the vine and the branches goes even further. Our Lord tells us that our life flows directly from his life. We are so united that we do not really exist without him. Without Christ we would not be truly alive. He told us, “Without me you can do nothing.” Without being united to Jesus, we have the appearance of being alive. In reality we are merely existing. Henry David Thoreau got it right when he said, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”; someone added, “And they die with their song still inside them.” Real or authentic life is the life of a person who abides in Christ. A fake life is the life of persons who think that they can do anything without Christ. If we try to live only out of our own resources, then we are not really living. Jesus warns us not to cut ourselves off from our life source. If we are cut off, we will not bear any fruit. Not bearing fruit could be our refusal to go out of ourselves, pretending that we are self-sufficient, closing our hearts to those in need of our attention, our concern, our financial resources. We may be efficient at work or at home, but inside we are little better than dead. When Jesus invites us to abide in him, what does “abide” really mean? When we abide in Christ, we will have the chance of becoming authentic persons. Instead of our own self-interest being the source of our behavior, it will be our oneness with Christ. This may sound rather vague but let’s look at the image of the branch that lives in the vine. It draws its vitality and strength from the vine and it knows that it can withstand all kinds of harsh weather because it can rely on the strength of the vine. It does not stand alone. In our own lives when the harsh weather of loss, fear, pain, or separation comes, if we are firmly united to Jesus we will not have to go through these experiences alone. The lives of the saints prove this repeatedly. They were not free from pain or loss. Yet they were firm in their love of Christ and could endure things about which we can only wonder. Jesus wants us to bear good fruit. However, we cannot bear good fruit if we have hatred in our hearts. When we hate our enemies, the hatred is not in the enemy, the hatred is in our hearts. That hatred stops the flow of God’s love from producing good works in us. To love others we have to overcome our prejudices and fears. We have to recognize that other persons have dignity and are our equals. This involves the hard work of conversion. We

have to ask ourselves, what are my prejudices? What are my fears? A woman who lived through the Holocaust is still a person of faith. Somebody questioned her about how she could have faith in a God who would let something like the Holocaust happen? Her response was, “It wasn’t that God let it happen; God was there. However, God did not have enough friends on earth willing to do anything about it.” You see, Jesus abides in us and we must abide in him. As we grow stronger in our faith, then we have the courage to give ourselves for others. Maybe in preparation for Pentecost, we might identify the gifts of all the people in our community, celebrate them, and allow them to be used for the building up of God’s kingdom.

Each year students from Holy Rosary Catholic School are given the opportunity to participate in the V.F.W. Post 8535 Americanism Contest. Students can color a flag, draw a flag, or draw a picture from an event in American History. HRCS is proud to announce that Claire Arabie was the first place winner at the local, district, and state level. Claire’s drawing was a depiction of the Gettysburg Address. Claire received a trophy along with a monetary award at the recent V.F.W. banquet. Claire is the daughter of Garrett and Jill Arabie, who are parishioners of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church.

If we have not included your church, or you would like to be a part of the Worship Directory, please call the Lafourche Gazette at 693-7229.
