No evidence of foul play in Metairie woman’s death
Lafourche Sheriff’s Office reported no evidence of foul play has been discovered in the Mia West death of a Metairie W woman whose body was found last month in Raceland. The body of Mia West, 43, was discovered near a sugarcane field on October 13. West was reported missing in Jefferson Parish on October 7. Six days later, on October 13, a sugarcane farmer located an abandoned car in a field along LA Highway 307 in Raceland. It was later determined to belong to West. The Lafourche Parish Interagency Crisis Management Unit responded and began conducting an extensive search of the area. Supported by a helicopter from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, West’s body was located in a nearby wooded area. An autopsy conducted on Monday, October 15 in Jefferson Parish confirmed her identity, but the date and manner of her death could not be determined. See West Page 3-A

VRIGNE-MEUSE, France (AP) — Augustin Trebuchon is buried beneath a white lie. His tiny plot is almost on the front line where the guns finally fell silent at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, after a four-year war that had already killed millions. A simple white cross says: “Died for France on Nov. 10, 1918.” Not so. Like hundreds of others along the Western Front, Trebuchon was killed in combat on the morning of Nov. 11 — after the pre-dawn agreement between the Allies and Germany but before the armistice took effect six hours later. His death at almost literally the eleventh hour only highlighted the folly of a war that had become ever more incomprehensible to many in nations drawn into the first global conflict. Before Nov. 11, the war had killed 14 million people, including 9 million soldiers, sailors and airmen from 28 countries. Germany came close to a quick, early victory before the war settled into hellish trench fighting. One battle, like the Somme in France, could have up to 1 million casual-
ties. The use of poison gas came to epitomize the ruthlessness of warfare that the world had never seen. For the French, who lost up to 1.4 million troops, it was perhaps too poignant — or too shameful — to denote that Trebuchon had been killed on the very last morning, just as victory finally prevailed. “Indeed, on the tombs it said ‘Nov. 10, 1918,’ to somewhat ease the mourning of families,” said French military historian Nicolas Czubak. There were many reasons why men kept falling until the call of the bugler at 11 a.m.: fear that the enemy would not abide by the armistice, a sheer hatred after four years of unprecedented slaughter, the ambition of commanders craving a last victory, bad communications, the inane joy of killing. As the hours ticked down, villages were taken, attacks were thwarted with heavy losses and rivers were crossed under enemy fire. Questions remain whether the gains were worth all the human losses. Historian Joseph Persico estimated the total dead, wounded and missing on all sides on the final day was 10,900. See Veteran’s Day Page 3-A

Veteran’s Day From 1-A
U.S. Gen. John J. Pershing, who had been bent on continuing the fighting, even had to explain to Congress the high number of last-day losses. Other nations also were not spared such casualties. With two minutes to go, 25-year-old Canadian Pvt. George Lawrence Price was slain by a German sniper. About 150 miles away in France, a 23year-old American, Henry Gunther, was killed by German machine-gun fire one minute before the armistice. Trebuchon, 40, also was shot minutes before the cease-fire. He was running to tell his comrades where and when they would have a meal after the armistice. All three are considered their nations’ last men to fall in active combat. “THE FUTILITY OF THE LARGER WAR” Anti-German sentiment ran high after the United States declared war in April 1917, and Gunther and his family in Baltimore were subjected to the kind of prejudice and suspicion that many of German descent faced at the time. “It was not a good time to be German in the United States,” said historian Alec Bennett. Gunther had little choice when he got drafted. He was given the rank of sergeant, but he later was demoted

when he wrote a letter home critical of the conditions in the war. Soon after, he was thrown into the biggest U.S. battle of the war, the Meuse-Argonne offensive in northeastern France. There were reports he was still brooding over his demotion right on Nov. 11. When he emerged from a thick fog in the valley around Chaumont-devantDamvillers, he and his comrades faced a German machine gun nest on the hillside. Indications are that the Germans fired one salvo over his head as a warning, knowing the war was almost over. But he still charged onward. “His time of death was 10:59 a.m., which is just so haunting,” Bennett said. Gunther was recognized by Pershing as the last American to die on the battlefield. Questions remain whether it was a suicide run, an attempt at redemption or an act of true devotion. “It is just as puzzling now as it was 100 years ago,” Bennett said, adding that one thing is clear: “Gunther’s act is seen as almost a symbol of the futility of the larger war.” But there was one more cruel twist for his family: They were unaware he had been killed. Upon his expected return “they went to the train station to meet Henry — not there!” said Bruce Malone, superintendent of Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, the final resting place for 100 Americans who died Nov. 11. “A NEED TO KILL ONE LAST TIME” There was no mystery surrounding the death of Price, the Canadian. It was an utterly senseless loss of life. He was a farm laborer in Saskatchewan when the swirl of history plucked him off the land in October 1917 as the Allies sought ever more manpower for the Western Front. The summer after he was drafted, he was part of the surge of victories
that seized villages and cities right up to Nov. 11. By that time, Canadians were retaking Mons in southern Belgium, where soldiers from the British Commonwealth had their very first battle with the Germans in August 1914. It was especially sweet for the Commonwealth commanders to retake the city, bringing the war full circle where they lost their first soldier, English Pvt. John Parr, on Aug. 21, 1914. Price decided to check out homes along the canals while civilians in the center of Mons had already broken out the wine and whiskey they had hidden for years from the Germans to celebrate with the Canadians. Suddenly, a shot rang out and Price collapsed. “It really was one man, here and there, who was driven by vengeance, by a need to kill one last time,” said Belgian historian Corentin Rousman. The final minutes counted not just for the casualties but also for the killers. “There are rules in war,” Rousman said. “There is always the possibility to kill two minutes before a cease-fire. Two minutes after, the German would have had to stand before a judge. That’s the difference.” At the St. Symphorien cemetery just outside Mons, Price, the last Commonwealth soldier killed in the war, lies a stone’s throw from Parr, the first. “He is not forgotten,” Rousman said of Price. “It’s a soldier whose tomb is often draped in flowers.” “PART OF THIS GREAT PATRIOTIC MOMENTUM” Trebuchon’s grave stands out because of the date, underscoring the random fortunes of war. He was a shepherd from France’s Massif Central and could have avoided the war as a family breadwinner at age 36. “But he was part of this great patriotic momentum,” said JeanChristophe Chanot, the mayor of Vrigne-Meuse, where he died. Trebuchon knew misery as part of France’s most brutal battles — Marne, Somme, Verdun. He survived right up to his last order — to tell soldiers where to gather after the armistice. Instead, his body was found with a bullet wound to the head. He was recognized as “the last French soldier killed during the last French attack against the Germans,” Chanot said. The date on his grave — Nov. 10, 1918 — remains controversial, even if it was meant to soothe a family’s sorrow. “It was a lie, without a question,” said Czubak, the French historian. ___ Photojournalist Virginia Mayo and video journalist Mark Carlson contributed. JOTB, which has grown in popularity over the years, will feature more than twenty local vendors at four locations between Larose and Cut Off. We spoke to MNL owner, Rayni Spaulding who explained why it was important to include local vendors as a part of their event. Rayni explained, “Here at Merle Norman we are a family. Our family work goal is always to be better than we were yesterday. In society today, people focus on trying to be better than everyone else, so this year we are trying to promote unity. We want to see the community come together and support each other. Spending money within
the community helps the area thrive and is a big part of that unity.” Spaulding said she and Nikki Terrebone, MNL Manager, will continue their vision to incorporate the talented people in the community with their salon’s Holiday Open house each year. Their shared vision does not stop there. In addition to promoting talented local vendors the Salon will be accepting new toy donations on behalf of CASA of Lafourche. CASA holds a special place in the hearts of those at MNL. “There are so many kids in our parish that are currently in Foster Care or group homes, and we want to make sure they have as many blessings as our own children have. We love giving back and supporting our community and would like to encourage more people to do the same,” said Rayni. For those interested in participating in the scavenger hunt, arrive early enough to visit each vendor, which is a requirement! Vendor booth locations will include Lil Sweet Pea’s Boutique, Lil Boujee Boutique, and Audrey’s Florist/Premier Stitching, all in Cut Off and of course Merle Norman in Larose. Completed scavenger forms will need to be handed in at MNL no later than 6:30 p.m. to be entered in the Saints ticket giveaway. All participants will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize, a pair of Saints tickets! Entrants who complete the scavenger hunt and turn in their form will also receive a swag bag of goodies, while supplies last! The gift bag includes discount coupons to several of the vendors and sample products! Guys who attend but may not be privy to utilizing the items in the swag bag should keep in mind that their wife, sister, mother, or daughter would probably be elated to receive something like that from you! What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd
Only love can break through the current hate and violence in our society
We cannot risk being negative, hateful, critically minded, or a gossiper because we will not be usable instruments of God. That’s why Jesus commanded us to love. This is most urgent and crucial. Rev. Alvin Herring, Director of the international group Faith in Action, has given us the following reflection on how Christians should respond to the current evil and violence. “It is times such as these, when the twin specters of hate and violence rise to remind us again that they can still wound us. They can still reach us where we are most vulnerable and cast us into fear and doubt, causing us immeasurable pain and grief along the way. In the midst of our pain, even at the height of our grief, we should be comforted to know that our faiths can sustain us and our creator is still by our side. “I have come to understand that violence, particularly violence aimed at the center of what we believe and hold dear, is designed to take away the very thing (our faith) that gives us hope and strength. Its aim is to challenge us so severely that we will shrink, our faith will wane, and our connection to the Divine and to one another will loosen and ultimately fade away. “But it is precisely through and for times like these that our faith was built. It was built to last. Built by our foremothers and forefathers who were forced off their land and were regarded as savages and uncivilized. Our ancestors who withstood the whip and the auction block built it. Built by our generations who came to these shores to work and to contribute only to be ostracized and regarded as the ‘other.’ “Built by a generation who survived the concentration camp and the death house. Built by our generations whom they interred in times of war because the country could not trust its own. Built by distant generations who were escaping tyranny in their own land and thought freedom could be created here. “There was violence in those moments as there is violence now. How do we respond to such violence? What is our prayer today? I am moved by a Bible verse that has both comforted and emboldened me over the years. The verse is found in the book of Joshua at a time of intense peril for his people. Joshua says, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ (Josh 24:15) “How will we serve our creator at this time? We are full of grief, pain and dismay, and that is how it should be. Our losses feel too great to bear. Eleven slain in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, two lives lost in a senseless murder in Louisville and the potential loss of life had the bombs of a deranged man, full of hate, gone off – they were all acts of violence motivated by hate. “Allow me to remind you that we are people of resilient faiths. When
practiced with fidelity, our faiths are only about love. In this moment we are to pick each other up and help each other stand. “Stand in defiance of hate for sure, but stand in the name of love. It is our love that no one can conquer. It is our love that an assassin’s bullet or a bomb makers’ bomb cannot extinguish. “It is our love that will ultimately change the laws to get rid of the guns who sole purpose is killing people, care for
the mentally sick, changes the hearts of those who are overcome with hatred and prejudice. “It is our love that binds us back together again. It will be our love that will comfort us now. One day perhaps, when this kind of violence is a mere sad memory, we will look back and with wonder, marvel that through all of the senseless violence and hate, we nonetheless became the generation of love.”
Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux encourages to #iGiveCatholic
Archdioceses across the country to participate in Giving Day Nov. 27th Schriever, LA – Kick off the charitable season on #GivingTuesday, November 27, with #iGiveCatholic – an online crowdfunding event that brings the Catholic community together to give thanks and give back. The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is one of 28 participating archdioceses and dioceses for #iGiveCatholic. Considered the most successful Catholic crowdfunding event to date, the fourth annual #iGiveCatholic will be held on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. “This is an exciting opportunity for everyone in our diocese to celebrate Catholic philanthropy,” said Bishop Shelton Fabre. “We truly

These funds helped our parishes and schools accomplish projects such as new digital billboards for a church parish, replacement of sewage systems, and even new electrical wiring for lights in classrooms.
