Council agrees with Administration — ratifies insurance plan By Buster Avera Contributing Writer
In a unanimous move by the Lafourche Council, the parish and its employees will benefit from W thousands of dollars in savings in 2019 through the selection of a new insurance provider. Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle’s proposal to use coverage by Anthony J. Alford Insurance Corporation over longtime insurer Arthur J. Gallagher Benefit Services of Thibodaux was approved by affirmative vote of all nine council members at a Monday, November 12 special public meeting, Although Byron Landry and Buddy Ledet of Gallagher spoke on behalf of their company’s quote for 2019, it was clearly the Alford plan with its lower premiums and savings for the parish that drove the unanimous vote. Gallagher has been the parish’s insurer for 18 years, during the Gerald Breaux and Charlotte

Donations being accepted for 25th Annual LPSO Christmas Bicycle Giveaway
Donations are still being accepted for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office’s 25th annual Christmas Bicycle Giveaway. More than 4,200 bicycles have been distributed to needy children in our area. In 2017, 100 bikes were delivered to children throughout Lafourche Parish. Donations are accepted year-round, and used bicycles are refurbished and repaired by inmate workers. Sheriff Webre asks that any bicycles donated at this time be either brand new or in need of only minor repairs due to the giveaway taking place next month. Monetary donations are also accepted, and checks should be made payable to the Lafourche Deputies Association with the words “Bike Giveaway” in the memo line. Bicycles and monetary donations may be dropped off at any Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office location through the parish. “I want to thank the generous people of Lafourche Parish who have made this program possible for 25 years,” said Sheriff Webre. “Thanks to your donations, we have brought a little Christmas joy to thousands

One of the hardest responsibilities for a state trooper is knocking on someone’s door and telling them their loved one was killed by a drunk driver, Capt. Frank Besson said. “No mother, no father, no brother, no sister, aunt or uncle should ever have to hear that, especially when it comes to an impaired driver,” the Louisiana State Police Troop C commander said. “These crashes are totally preventable.” Troop C and the South Central Regional Safety Coalition kicked off the annual Zero for the Holidays campaign Thursday. Now in its 17th year, the campaign runs through Jan. 1. In addition to impaired driving, Zero for the Holidays targets speeding, unrestrained occupants, and aggressive and distracted driving. “We focus on the holiday season because it’s so precious to all of us,” Besson said. “A lot of people travel on the roadways from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. This campaign is about zero deaths. There are too many lives that are lost because of impaired drivers or people making bad decisions.” Troop C’s area, which covers Lafourche, Terrebonne and Assumption parishes, and the west banks of St. James and St. John parishes, recorded 38 fatality crashes last year, Besson said. Of those, 62 percent were alcohol-related. This year, the area has had 30 fatality crashes so far and 53 percent of them involved alcohol. Besson wants to see that number drop to zero. “Fifty-three percent is still unacSee Campaign Page 3-A

Beyond crazy in America By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist
The horrendous shooting of 12 innocent people at a country music bar in Twin Oaks California reminds us that no place in America is safe. If we thought there were some safe sacred zones in our country then we should ask the people in Pittsburgh. In particular, ask the people of the Tree of Life Synagogue in the community of Squirrel Hill where eleven people were murdered and six others wounded during a sacred hour of worship. Last week in Martin County, Kentucky, a woman shot her sleeping husband in his bed in the early morning hours. She then called a friend and told her that she was going to end her own life as well. She told her friend about their life stresses, consisting primarily of health issues and medical bills, and that she felt they could not overcome them. By the time her friend and others got there she was dead along with her husband. What makes a Marine Veteran decide to exterminate the lives of innocent people out for a night of dancing and fun in California? What gets into the mind of a man that causes him to wreak evil in the midst of a sacred place of worship? What happens to a woman who becomes so down that she sees the only way out of her misery is murder and suicide? Why did she feel like she had the right to take her husband’s life? In general, Americans have gone crazy in recent elections. If you want to alienate your friends on social media, then take a stand on either side of the political spectrum. State your opinion about how much you love the Democrats or the Republicans and soon you’ll have fewer friends who probably weren’t your friends to begin with anyway. Americans have been marching for a long time. Dr. Martin Luther King taught us how to peacefully protest. He demonstrated how to march and stand up for what is right. He had class. He wasn’t perfect but he was a man to whom we need to look for how to conduct ourselves when it comes to going against injustices. Most Americans just want the simple things of life. We want to live out our lives in peace. We would like to work our jobs, raise our families, save a little money and occasionally be able to buy a car and pay for a home. Most Americans dream of retirement and doing things like gardening, fishing, traveling a little or just having a life free of the big hassles, at least for awhile. We would like to be able to go the doctor when we need to and not feel that we will have to second mortgage our house to pay the bill. Overall, today’s Americans don’t feel
that anything is simple anymore. Too much on television is no longer entertaining but is filled with intensity; murder stories that are sadly true, gruesome violence and more bad news. Cable news and other networks have a “side they have taken and all of their reporting is constantly pushing their side. Pushing their side unfortunately means bashing every element of the other side with anything that is dirty, negative or just an outright lie. Thus, most Americans are sick of elections and election commercials. We are sick of robo calls and email boxes stuffed with financial solicitations to support candidates. Who wants to see a national news reporter wrestling a young intern for a microphone in the press room of the White House and totally disrespecting the President of the United States? We know the next two years will be nothing now but campaigning for the next Presidential election together with all the rancor, hostility, violence, uncivil marches and crude rhetoric that will accompany the upcoming election. Are we beyond crazy in America? Look to a supposedly safe dancing country music bar in Twin Oaks California. Look to a quaint neighborhood and a respectable synagogue in Pittsburgh, or a remote trailer in Martin County, Kentucky and we have to acknowledge that there is serious mental illness across our country. Look at how people conduct themselves today on social media. It’s like there are no restraints on language or demeanor barriers toward others. The highways are filled with people who are ready to run you off the road or at least show you their middle finger. Sadly, all you have to do to experience America’s craziness is to go to a public school, house of worship, a music joint or sleep in your own bed. Most often you don’t have to do anything at all because evil and mental illness can show up right in your face. What can we do? Live cautiously. Know where the exit doors are everywhere you go. We must utilize security from churches to bars to schools and our homes. Every American should be required to pass a screening test at the local health department before being issued a permit to own a firearm. People with PTSD problems and other people who have already been verified as having mental issues don’t need to be walking the streets with guns. Most Americans just want a safe, sane and peaceful life. However, overall we’re beyond crazy in this country and sadly we are way beyond trying to really do something to resolve and protect our people.

Boy, 13, pleads not guilty in shooting death of 6-year-old State once again breaks record for most adoptions in year
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s Department of Children and Families has again set a record for the most adoptions in a year, with more than 900 children finding permanent homes last year. Citing a press release, the Advocate reports 912 children were adopted into permanent homes by 631 families from October 2017 through the end of September. That’s up from the previous record of 771 foster children adopted by 548 families in 2017. In addition to the foster children who were adopted, officials say another 2,332 children were reunited with their families after being taken into state custody, either returning home or to the guardianship of a relative. Department Secretary Marketa Walters says permanency is their goal for children who enter foster care. Walters says that’s a safe, stable and loving home, whether through adoption or reunification with their family. Information from: The Advocate, http://theadvocate.com

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Music lovers will get an extra day this year at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The festival’s management announced Friday that they will add another day as a way to honor the festival’s 50th anniversary. The new day will be Thursday April 25. That will take the festival from seven days to eight days spread out over two weekends. The festival will run April 25-28 and May 25. Locals will also be able to get in for $50 on the first Thursday by showing Louisiana ID. The festival lineup will be announced in December. The New Orleans festival has hosted bigname musical acts such as Bruce Springsteen, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Elton John and also showcases hundreds of performers
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy in Louisiana has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old. The Advocate reports the child appeared in court Tuesday wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and accompanied by his grandmother and court-appointed attorney. First-grader Jahiem Holliday was shot to death this month in the backyard of a Baton Rouge home. Authorities say the boys were playing outside near a group of people who were talking about making a music video. Their ages are unclear. They say the 13-year-old went inside his home and returned with a gun thought to belong to his uncle. Police have said the boys may have argued. Prosecutors say the boy pointed a gun at the 6year-old and fired a shot that the defense says was accidental.

Louisiana GDP rises again in second quarter
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana posted growth of 4.3 percent in real gross domestic product during the second quarter, ranking 12th in the nation for growth. The Advocate reports the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released the figures Wednesday. They represent the second straight quarter of strong growth in Louisiana after a poor showing in 2017. Louisiana’s GDP was more than $249 billion during the second quarter. Gross domestic product measures the market value of goods and services produced. It’s a widely-used benchmark for the economy. Mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction rose by 0.40 percentage points in Louisiana after tumbling in the first quarter. Construction and utilities are among the other sectors that gained during the second quarter. The only sectors in Louisiana that fell during the period are educational services and finance and insurance.

“I think voters will be fed up. You won’t see any millage or sales tax passed,” he said. Jerry Lafont noted that the parish has spent $80,000 on studies on how to make the parish wide system work better. “We are quitting too soon,” he said. Interim Parish Administrator Brent Abadie said that the current system could use more time to work out problems. “We do have better financial accountability now. But we are in a very hostile tax environment. You are going to leave some districts out there with virtually no money now and no way to get it because they are probably not going to get a tax to support them,” said Abadie. Cory Perrillioux, who sponsored the ordinance, said there is still a need for the parish wide board. “I still want a parish wide board to oversight the local districts and to oversee the 1.6 mills parish wide. Let’s change course for the sake of the kids,” he said. Perrillioux and the majority of his fellow council members got their wish.

tion says there will be enough money available to fulfill a promised 2% cost of living raise for all parish employees next year. Prospective insurers were asked to quote on both a comprehensive plan that closely matched the present coverage as well as a higher deductible plan with combined “gap” insurance coverage. Gap insurance is designed to cover higher than expected out of pocket costs which result from emergency situations. A small additional monthly premium for gap as opposed to a huge medical bill during a sudden medical event makes gap insurance an attractive choice for employees who have seen their costs skyrocket. Alford’s plan included higher deductibles and higher out of pocket costs, but also gap coverage to offset the possibility of large medical bills. Gallagher did not want to quote a gap plan. Their standard proposal would have saved the parish $500,000. “There may be a time when gap coverage is widely utilized in our area, but the fact that it is not prevalently here yet is concerning. If ya’ll feel that combining $5000 United Health Care plan with gap insurance is the way to go, then certainly you can vote for Alford’s plan tonight. We’re not gonna do gap plan. We’re not gonna do it,” said Buddy Ledet in defense of his company’s quote. Cantrelle said the gap plan will lower the number of claims that the provider will have to process. “We want to get the number of claims down to about 75%. Right now I think we’re at 85%. It’s very, very important to not only save money for our employees, but reduce the claims that the insurance company would see,” he said. When asked by Council Chairperson Luci Sposito why Gallagher was “fired” as broker and another broker chosen from outside Lafourche parish, Interim Administrator Brent Abadie said this year’s plan was a break from other years.
“This year was done completely independent of anything that was done before. This was completely objective and had nothing to do with where any of the brokers came from,” said Abadie. The plan includes health, vision, dental, prescription medication and several supplemental coverages and will take effect on January 1, 2019 and run for 1 year.

ceptable,” he said. “That’s why we’re here today.” One number that Besson said he would like to see even higher is the number of motorists wearing seat belts. About 87.1 percent of drivers wear seat belts in Louisiana, but in Troop C’s area that number is 90.4 percent. “That’s a token of working together day in and day out to keep people safe on the roads,” Besson said. Lafourche District Attorney Kristine Russell said although law enforcement will step up patrols this holiday season, the ultimate responsibility to keep roads safer rests with drivers themselves. “This is a wonderful time of the year,” Russell said. “We love to come together to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. But with these celebrations comes a responsibility.” Ava Fontenot of Mothers Against Drunk Driving thanked law enforcement representatives from multiple parishes who joined together for a common goal. “When you are out there on the roadway and are tired and feel like you’re not making an impact, trust me, you’re giving these people you’re pulling over a second chance at life,” she said. “Hopefully next time they’ll make better decisions before they get behind that wheel after they’ve been drinking.” Law enforcement agencies will step up patrols in Terrebonne and Lafourche, and more troopers will patrol area highways throughout the holiday season, Besson said. But to reach the goal of zero deaths, the community must work together. “We’re asking the public to help us out,” Besson said. “Make those good driving decisions. Drive sober, buckle up, take your time and make sure your children are fastened properly. This is something we take very seriously. During the holiday season we don’t want any empty seats around the table.” Motorists can report suspected impaired drivers to local law enforcement agencies or State Police at *577.

Nicholls State Athletics Dept.
THIBODAUX, La. - For the second time in program history, the Nicholls State University football team is Southland Conference champions. The No. 15/18 Colonels continued their dominant play in every facet of the game and shut out rival Southeastern Louisiana, 44-0, Thursday night at Manning Field in John L. Guidry Stadium in the annual River Bell Classic. With the win, Nicholls (8-3, 7-2) secured the Southland’s automatic qualifier and head to the FCS playoffs for the second consecutive season. The Colonels earned the spot via the tiebreaker against Incarnate Word, which also earned a share of the regular season title with a 6-2 mark. Nicholls defeated the Cardinals, 48-21, to start their four-game winning streak. The win evened the series at 14-14 against Southeastern (4-7, 4-5 SLC) and was the largest margin of victory over the Lions. It was also the first Colonel shutout in league play since their 58-0 win over Northwestern State in 2007. Nicholls racked up a season-high 358 yards on the ground, led by freshman Julien Gums’ first career 100yard game. The New Orleans native totaled 121 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Dontrell Taylor added 95 yards and a score while quarterback Chase Fourcade rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns. The defense pitched its first shutout since 2011, holding SLU to 299 total yards and forced three turnovers. Two were courtesy of senior Ahmani Martin, who had a pair of jarring hits in the game’s opening minutes. The Colonels have thrived on fast starts during the current streak and Thursday night was no different but it was the defense that got things started.
Nicholls players celebrate the win over Southeastern Thursday earning a Southland Conference championship. hoto by Misty Leigh McElroy On the second play of the game, Martin delivered a crushing blow on a Julius Maracalin to force a fumble, and Darren Evans ran it back 51 yards to the SLU 14. On the Colonels’ first offensive play, Taylor scored on a rush for the early lead. Martin then forced another fumble on the second possession, with Ronald Ollie recovering it, but neither team could get anything going over the next few drives. But before the end of the quarter, Gums capped a 12-play, 52-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for a 130 lead. Early in the second, Fourcade and sophomore Dai’Jean Dixon connected on a 30-yard catch before Fourcade scored his first rushing touchdown of the night, this one from 9 yards out. Nicholls added a 23-yard field goal by Lorran Fonseca in the quarter and led 23-0 at the break. It marked the third consecutive game that the Colonels’ have shutout their opponent in the opening half. Over the last four games, Nicholls has outscored the opposition, 112-7, before the intermission. Things were the same in the third as the Colonels took the opening kickoff and pieced together a 10-play scoring drive for a 30-0 advantage. A 12-yard Taylor rush and an 18yard catch by Dixon moved the ball down the field before Gabe Fuselier caught a strike from Fourcade for a 10-yard touchdown. Fourcade finished the night 11-of-
18 passing for 128 yards. In the fourth, Fourcade added a 1-yard touchdown and Gums rumbled off a 64-yard carry before scoring his second TD of the night. Nicholls had an allaround effort on defense once again, with eight players recording 4 or 5 tackles. Ollie had the team’s lone sack and totaled 2.0 tackles for loss. In the pass defense, Martin added two breakups and Khristian Mims picked up his first career interception. Chason Virgil, who entered the matchup ranked third in the SLC in passing, was limited to 193 yards on 16 of 31. Tamarcus Russell led the Lion defense with a game-high 16 tackles. The Southland title is the first for the program since 2005. Nicholls will be making back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in school history. The Colonels will find out their next opponent Sunday, Nov. 18 during the FCS Playoff Selection Show, set to air at 11:30 a.m. central on ESPNU. What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd Ignatius of Antioch welcomed martyrdom in Rome as a ticket to Heaven
Ignatius of Antioch (35-107) was converted to Christianity and eventually became bishop of Antioch. In the year 107, Emperor Trajan visited Antioch and forced the Christians to renounce Christ or face death. Ignatius refused to deny Christ and was condemned to die in Rome. On the way to Rome, Ignatius wrote seven letters urging Christians to remain faithful to God and to obey their superiors. His writings attest to the sacramental and hierarchical nature of the Church from its earliest days. The following is his last letter to the Roman Community. “I am writing to all the churches to let it be known that I will gladly die for God if only you do not stand in my way. I plead with you: show me no untimely kindness. Let me be food for the wild beasts, for they are my way to God. I am God’s wheat and shall be ground by their teeth so that I may become Christ’s pure bread. Pray to Christ for me that the animals will be the means of making me a sacrificial victim for God. “No earthly pleasures, no kingdoms of this world can benefit me in any way. I prefer death in Christ Jesus to power over the farthest limits of the earth. He who died in place of us is the one object of my quest. He who rose for our sakes is my one desire. “The time for my birth is close at hand. Forgive me, my brothers and sisters. Do not stand in the way of my birth to real life; do not wish me stillborn. My desire is to belong to God. Do not, then, hand me back to the world. Do not try to tempt me with material things. Let me attain pure light. “Only on my arrival there can I be fully a human being. Give me the privilege of imitating the passion of my God. If you have him in your heart, you will understand what I wish. You will sympathize with me because you will know what urges me on. “The prince of this world is determined to lay hold of me and to undermine my will that is intent on God. Let none of you here help him; instead show yourselves on my side, which is also God’s side. Do not talk about Jesus Christ if you love this world. Do not harbor envious thoughts. Supposing I should see you, if then I should beg you to intervene for me, do not believe what I say. Believe instead what I am now writing to you. “For though I am alive as I write to you, still my real desire is to die. My love of this life has been crucified, and there is no yearning in me for any earthly thing. Rather within me is the living water that says deep inside me: ‘Come to the Father.’ “I no longer take pleasure in perishable food or in the delights of this world. I want only God’s bread, which is
the flesh of Jesus Christ, formed of the seed of David, and for drink I crave his blood, which is love that cannot perish. “I am no longer willing to live a merely human life, and you can bring about my wish if you will. Please, then, do me this favor, so that you in turn may meet with equal kindness. Put briefly, this is my request: believe what I am saying to you. Jesus Christ himself will make it clear to you that I am saying the truth. Only truth can come from that mouth by which the Father has truly spoken. “Pray for me that I may obtain my desire. I have not written to you as a mere man would, but as one who knows the mind of God. If I am condemned to suffer, I will take it that you wish me well. If they postpone my case, I can only think that you wish me harm.”
