HOUMA, La. (AP) — Plenty of high school students from the area head to Mexico for their senior trips at the end of each school year. But for one local teen, his experience in Mexico over this past summer didn’t feature relaxing on a beach in Cozumel or Cancun. Instead, Reece Guidry was playing rugby in Mexico City. Guidry, now a 5-foot-10, 235-pound senior football player at Central Lafourche High School, was selected to compete in an international rugby competition as part of the Under 19 USA South Panthers. He was introduced to rugby by his former youth football coach Gregg Dinicola a few years back. “Coach Gregg always played rugby and still does and used to bring the Reece Guidry ball out to practice and we would always throw it around,” Guidry said. most insidious criminal acts that a person can commit,” Webre said. “It sets in motion a generation of future abusers. If I steal your car, you don’t go out next week or 10 years from now and steal your neighbor’s car. But a child who grows up in a household with abuse or violence is statically at much greater risk of growing up to commit this horrible crime.” Lafourche Parish sheriff’s deputies answered 1,488 calls related to domestic violence last year, despite it being one of the most underreported crimes. There were also 665 protective orders issued for victims last year in Lafourche, the Sheriff’s Office said. To combat this onslaught of abuse, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office aided in the creation of a state law prohibiting people convicted of domestic abuse battery and those with qualifying protective orders from possessing firearms. Since passage of the law, there have been no homicides committed in the parish by those prohibited from having a firearm, the sheriff said. District Attorney Kristine Russell said her team of prosecutors is also taking proactive approaches to combat domestic abuse. This year alone the DA’s office has handled 239 domestic violence cases, Russell said. See Vigil Page 4-A

The Alternate to Dying By Glenn Mollette Guest Columnist
In recent years I ’ v e watched good friends walk the valley of battling cancer. Somewhat slowly they went through the process of fighting for their lives. Finally, one day it was over and they died. I sat with one dear friend in his home months before he died and he asked, “Why me?” He was about 63 and had just started thinking about retirement and then his life was over. I was talking to a classmate from high school who was telling me about his elevated PSA while his significant other had just been diagnosed with cancer. She had just decided to go with a double mastectomy. We were sharing our troubles and we both agreed that we are aging. The alternative to dying is aging. If we are to live there is only one way to go and that is adding additional years. While many of us still feel and want to act like we are 21 we aren’t. We all know people who died at young ages from disease or an accident or were killed in war. Some of us have been fortunate to live awhile and most of us are very grateful for every day of life. We shrug our shoulders sometimes and say we’re 40, then 50, then 60, 70 and so forth. It’s hard to believe that we have achieved our particular age. The flipside to this increasing number are life’s problems that accom-
pany aging. We don’t see as well. We don’t hear as good. We don’t stand as straight. Our knees and hips hurt. Our hair turns color or falls out. We start having other internal problems related to heart, liver, kidneys, thyroid, lungs and the list goes on. Aging means more trips to the doctor and other medical specialists. The trade off to dying young is frequent body checkups and tune-ups. They aren’t fun at all and are sometimes financially prohibitive for many. I’m not for socialized medicine but I’m for everyone having access to healthcare. If it takes socialized medicine to insure this then I’ll vote for it to happen. I’m totally against the powers that be at an insurance corporate office deciding that I can’t have a surgery if my doctor says it’s imperative for my health and even life. I am opposed to someone at a government Medicare office saying that Medicare won’t pay for a heart
surgery; a chemo treatment, dialysis or whatever is needed for anyone’s health and life. I am opposed to killing babies on the front end of life and I’m opposed to killing old people at the back end of life. Life should be given every opportunity. We are fortunate if we get to live awhile. The longer we live we will deal with blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, polyps, nodules and so forth. Finally, something takes us out and this good life we enjoyed is over. Thus while we are alive we do all we can do to live wisely and to do our best. We trust that our doctor will do all that he can do and we look to God in faith that beyond this life is a much, much better place where our dear friends and family await our entrance to where they have gone on before.

Army Insurance
Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center, where he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance. It wasn’t long before Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones was having a staggeringly high success rate, selling insurance to nearly 100% of the recruits he advised. Rather than ask about this, the Captain stood in the back of the
room and listened to Jones’ sales pitch. Jones explained the basics of GI Insurance to the new recruits, and then said, “If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don’t have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000.” “Now,” he concluded, “Which group do you think they are going to send into battle first?”
Nicholls State University will begin collecting canned food later this month to donate to area food banks for the holiday season. The annual food drive, Nicholls CAN, is a campus-wide movement to donate non-perishable food items. The collection will begin Oct. 29 and end Nov. 9. Michael Williams, associate professor of art and coordinator of the food drive, said the goal is to collect one can per student, faculty and staff on the campus, or about 7,000. Last year, the food drive collected and donated 14,386 items of food. Annually, more than 5 million households in the United States required the services of a food bank. Louisiana ranks 49th in food security with more than 20 percent of its residents having “limited or uncertain” access to foods, according to a re-

Rugby From 1-A
“One day we were at his house watching an LSU game and we asked if we can start a team. That’s how the Bayou Hurricanes started. We got a team together in 2014 and won the state championship in 2015.” Guidry, who plays offensive line in football, plays up-front rugby positions prop or hooker. “You have three front rows, the scrum,” Guidry said. “It’s eight big guys up front, like the offensive and defensive lines in football. They are front row positions. The prop holds up the hooker and you just keep pushing. They call us the big ugly guys.” Unlike in football, Guidry said there are very few breaks in rugby. “The main difference to me is the fitness,” Guidry said. “In football you have breaks in between each play. In rugby, the game keeps going. The level of fatigue is very different.” It was through his play with the Hurricanes and at national regional tournament a group of with Louisiana all-stars that
Guidry was picked to play for the Panthers in Mexico. “I played some of my best rugby at those regional tournaments,” Guidry said. “Some of the USA coaches were there and that is how I was selected to play for the USA team.” Guidry’s mother Sandy said her son was overwhelmed when he found out he was selected to the USA South team. “He was so excited when he got chosen that he called me up crying,” Sandy said. “It was fabulous. It was phenomenal that he got selected.” While in Mexico, Guidry and the Panthers placed second in the tournament behind the host country. The tournament also featured teams from the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. While Guidry said he enjoyed the trip to Mexico he also noticed some major cultural differences. “The roads, the driving, the food, they were all different,” Guidry said. “They didn’t have washers and dryers. We had to wash and dry our uniforms by hand. The technology is not as up to date as it is here.” While there are some colleges that offer rugby scholarships, many other colleges have club teams. Guidry said he hopes to continue playing the sport in college in some capacity following his senior year at Central Lafourche. “Rugby in college is growing, but it’s not really that big yet,” Guidry said. “I will just wait and see where it takes me.” ___
Vigil From 1-A
“In our office each and every one of our domestic violence cases has two goals: seeking justice and striving to support our victims,” Russell said. “That’s 239 wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, children and partners whose world was shattered by abuse.” According to the Violence Policy Center, Louisiana is ranked second in the nation for homicides among women killed by male offenders in incidents that included one victim and one offender in 2016. Nearly one in four women age 18 and older have been the victim of physical violence by an intimate partner, and domestic violence remains the leading cause of injury to women. The vigil’s guest speaker, WWL-TV news anchor Kristin Pierce, who also suffered at the hands of domestic abuse, told attendees that as a reporter she covers many stories
about deaths or severe beatings resulting from domestic violence. However, she said, many people don’t hear much about how those tragedies build up. “You don’t hear about pushes or slaps,” Pierce said. “You hear about deaths and murders. For me, I wasn’t even sure my first red flag was even abuse. He pushed me so hard that I slammed up against a wall and couldn’t move. I think I knew at the time that it wasn’t right. It just got worse and worse.” As candles were lit, organizers read the names of those who lost their lives to domestic violence. Pierce encouraged those who are suffering from abuse to seek help. “For the people who experience this or know people who have experienced this, you really start to realize you’re not alone,” she said.

New interchange between I-49, I-220 officially opens
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Officials celebrated the opening of a new interchange between Interstate 49 and Interstate 220 in Louisiana. The Shreveport Times reports Gov. John Bel Edwards and other officials celebrated the opening of the new interchange between I-49 and I-220 in north Shreveport on Wednesday. Contractor PCL Construction began work on what was called the I-49 North Segment K2 project in 2014 at a cost of $142 million. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development also recently completed adjacent I-49 Segments J and K1, which totaled $81 million. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says they’ve delivered a piece of infrastructure that opens the door for improved movement of goods, services and people very safely. He says that translates to a local and state economy that reaps benefits through a modern transportation system. _____
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s high school student performance on the ACT college readiness test declined in the latest scores and remains below the national average. Figures released Wednesday by the Iowa group that administers the test show the latest average composite score among all states was 20.8 for the 2018 high school graduating class. Louisiana’s average was 19.2 , down from 19.5 a year earlier. The test measures how students perform in English, reading, math and science. A perfect score is 36. In 20 states where all or nearly all high school graduates took the ACT, 13 states had a higher average score than Louisiana. Minnesota led with a 21.3 average. In Louisiana, 53 percent of graduates were deemed to meet the English readiness benchmark, while only a quarter met science and math benchmarks. ___
nomic impact on the city. Essence Communications CEO Michelle Ebanks announced Wednesday that growth in festival attendance, which reached more than 510,000 this year, sparked a $280 million impact on New Orleans and the state. That’s the highest fiscal input in the event’s 24-year history. Ebanks says the four-day festival has emerged as the leader in size and economic significance among the country’s largest live events and is a top destination for tourism during the Fourth of July weekend. Mayor LaToya Cantrell says the 2018 festival generated “tremendous economic activity for the city — money that went to our large and small businesses.” ___
Louisiana’s first legal medical marijuana crop to be picked
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The first legal crop of
medical marijuana in Louisiana is set to be harvested this week. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the licensed grower working with the Louisiana State University Agriculture Center, GB Sciences, expects to start the drying process by next week. The company says it could have product packaged and ready to ship by the middle of next month. However, regulations have made it unclear when medical marijuana will be commercially available in the state. The agency that regulates the medical marijuana program, the state Department of Agriculture and Forestry, has not identified an independent, third-party lab to test the product before it ships to dispensaries. This testing is a requirement of the program, and the agency expects proposals from labs this month. Information from: The Times-Picayune, http://www.nola.com

A passenger who had fled the scene on foot was later found, after notifying police via phone that he too was shot while inside the vehicle. The passenger sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a local hospital, to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The passenger’s identity is being withheld in attempt to not jeopardize the investigation. Five arrested for Vehicle Thefts and Burglaries
Five people have been arrested in connection to recent vehicle burglaries in the north and central areas of Lafourche Parish. Kobe Wilson (age 18), Christopher McCormick (age 17), and Curt Pierre Jr. (age 18), all of Thibodaux, were arrested in connection to incidents in the north area of the parish. Jordan Picou (age 26) and Michael Molaison Jr. (age 24), both of Raceland, were charged for incidents in the central area of the parish. Detectives had been investigating a string of vehicle thefts and burglaries in the north area of Lafourche Parish dating back to late May 2018. Several subdivisions were hit including Highland Lakes, Sugar Ridge, Acadia Woods, Rienzi, and on Millstone Drive. On Wednesday, October 17, the Lafourche Parish Interagency Crisis Management Unit executed search warrants at McCormick’s and Pierre’s residences in the Marydale community. Two handguns were recovered from McCormick’s residence and several other items of stolen property were found at Pierre’s residence. Through investigation, detectives learned McCormick and Wilson allegedly committed numerous vehicle burglaries and stole three vehicles which were later abandoned near Marydale. Detectives also learned Pierre was given much of the stolen property to store at his residence. All three were booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. McCormick and Wilson were each charged with three counts of Theft of a Motor Vehicle and 20 counts of Simple Burglary. Their bonds are set at $575,000 each. Pierre was charged with Illegal Possession of Stolen Things, and his bond is set at $75,000. Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, detectives had also begun investigating a vehicle theft and vehicle burglary which occurred overnight at residences on Fantastic Acres Boulevard in Mathews. On Wednesday night, deputies and Troopers from Louisiana State Police located the stolen vehicle in Raceland and
conducted a traffic s t o p . Picou and Molaison were traveling in the stolen Wilson vehicle and detained. A f t e r questioning, they were each arrested a n d b o o k e d McCormick with Theft of a Motor Ve h i c l e and Simple Burg l a r y . Picou’s bond is set a t Pierre $50,000, and Molaison’s bond is set at $25,000. Sheriff Webre applauded the efforts of investiPicou gators in this case and encouraged citizens to keep valuables out of sight and vehic l e s l o c k e d . Molaison “Our detectives were diligent and did an outstanding job in this case,” said Sheriff Webre. “Ultimately, the best way to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of vehicle burglary is to remove all valuables from your vehicle and lock your vehicle each night. For the most part, criminals are seeking easy targets with unlocked doors or where valuables are in sight. By removing valuables and locking your vehicle, you dramatically decrease the chances your vehicle will be burglarized or stolen.” Through the use of social media, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to promote the #9pmRoutine. This national awareness campaign aims to remind citizens to remove valuables from their vehicles, lock their vehicles, and lock their home each night at or before 9 p.m. since most vehicle burglaries occur during the late night or early morning hours.

What a Life!
Sunday, October 21, 2018 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE

Jesus tells us what we need to take and what we need to leave behind in life
When I was young, I used to go fishing with my Grandfather. We didn’t go very often but when we did, he brought everything needed to catch fish, nets and bait to catch crabs, a cast net to catch shrimp and ice chests for food. We were loaded down. He didn’t have a big motor, about six horse power, and we had to rent a skiff. One day in August we went fishing with all our gear around the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. We traveled from the dock to the five-mile bridge and started to fish. We didn’t catch very many fish and as evening was setting in, we started back. Unfortunately, my grandfather’s motor wouldn’t start. We had to row the boat back to the dock. Unfortunately, darkness prevented us from seeing the dock and we passed it up. When we tried to get closer to shore, the waves swamped the boat and the gear we had went floating all around us. We salvaged most of our “stuff” but we had to spend the whole night on the shore waiting for sunlight so we could see to get back to the dock. Jesus is always giving us some valuable advice about our life journey. He tells us there are some things we need to bring with us and some things that we need to leave behind. In Mark’s Gospel Jesus uses very strong and strange words about cutting off parts of our body. Jesus is not advocating that we start cutting off various limbs or plucking out our eyes. He is using a form of speech that was very popular in his day and is also very common in our own day. It’s called “exaggeration.” So what is Jesus trying to tell us? We must not allow any part of ourselves to hinder us from our life journey. If any part is dragging us down, then we have to make some strong decisions that will enable us to continue our journey without too many burdens weighing us down. Jesus warns us against taking along things that are not appropriate as we move toward the fullness of life. To enter eternal life, we cannot be using our hands, feet, eyes, or mouth or any part of ourselves in any inappropriate way.
If we use our hands for purposes of violence or theft, or for sexual exploitation, then we must cut off that use of our hands. If we use our feet to bring us to places filled with danger for the good of our spirits, then we must cut off that use of our feet. If we use our eyes to look at pornography or waste them on reading trash, or viewing violent, dehumanizing films – we must cut off that use of our eyes. If we use our mouths to swear, to gossip, to bad-
mouth others, to put down our families or coworkers, to stir up prejudice against people – then we must cut off that use of our mouths. We know from experience that when we are with certain people or places, we find ourselves acting in ways that we regret. Yet, we continue to go back to those dangerous situations because we tell ourselves that we are strong – that nothing will happen. We just want to have a good

time. In the Lord’s prayer, we ask that we not be led into temptation and yet we often lead ourselves into temptation. Sin often comes dressed in an adorable guise. It’s easy to say, “It will be different for me.” The results are certain. Jesus is looking out for our own good and wants our journey to be successful. He is telling us what we must leave behind.
