Study: Oil spill cleanup caused illness

By Holly Duchmann Daily Comet Staff Writer

Seven years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill dumped millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, a federal study confirmed what one local doctor had suspected for years. Chemicals used in the cleanup W made thousands of people sick. Dr. Michael Robichaux, a ear, nose and throat doctor in Raceland, said he saw many patients experiencing the same symptoms after being exposed to the oil dispersants. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain, skin rashes, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, as well as endocrine disturbances where his patients bodies were not producing enough stress-relieving hormones. “I saw it over and over again, and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that this type of process exists. I lived through it, I saw it and I’m still seeing it,” Robichaux said. The federal study, conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, specifically examined associations between the two oil

Health department reminds residents of importance of annual flu vaccine

With flu season starting, the Louisiana Department of Health reminds all residents of the importance of getting an annual flu vaccine. The flu causes approximately 500 deaths and nearly 3,000 hospitalizations each year in Louisiana, and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. “We’re seeing flu activity early this year and an annual flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu, which can be very serious even deadly,” said Dr. Rebekah Gee, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. “Flu shots have been proven time and time again to be both safe and effective, and I encourage everyone to take this important step to protect their communities this flu season.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Louisiana Department of Heath recommend a yearly flu shot for everyone over six months

A Cut Off felon was arrested Tuesday after leading deputies on a highspeed pursuit throughout the South Lafourche area. Daniel Borne, 39, of Cut Off was taken into custody Borne after a brief standoff with deputies following the pursuit. Borne was scheduled to appear in court for a jury trial on Tuesday due to several charges stemming from multiple incidents. The charges included burglary, theft, DWI, drug possession, and traffic violations. When Borne failed to appear, eight warrants for Contempt of Court were issued for his arrest with a total combined bond set at $1.2 million. At around 1:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call that Borne had allegedly stolen a truck from a residence on East 58th Street in Cut Off. The resident said Borne had arrived the night before on a motorcycle, which was also later determined to have been stolen. When the resident awoke, Borne and his truck were gone. While deputies were conducting the investigation, Borne returned to East 58th Street in the stolen truck. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic

of age who does not have a complicating condition, such as a prior allergic reaction to the flu shot. While recommended for everyone, getting a flu shot is especially crucial for people who may be at higher risk for serious complications. This includes babies and young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and people 65 years and older. Symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches and nausea. Vomiting and diarrhea also can occur and are much more common among children than adults. The main way the flu is spread from person to person is through the coughs and sneezes of an infected person. A transfer can also occur when a person touches their own nose or mouth after coming into contact with infected droplets, nose drainage or saliva from an infected person.

More oil than initially believed spilled off Louisiana coast NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Coast Guard says the amount of oil discharged into the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana’s coast last weekend is substantially higher than initial estimates. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement says oil spewed out of an underwater fractured pipe Saturday in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southeast of Venice, Louisiana. The Coast Guard said in a news release Thursday that offshore oil and gas operator LLOG Exploration Offshore reports about 16,000 barrels of oil were discharged. The operator initially estimated that 7,950 to 9,350 barrels had spilled. The Coast Guard says multiple flights over the area have detected no recoverable oil. Skimming vessels from Clean Gulf Associates and Marine Spill Response Corporation remain on standby. The Deepwater Horizon spill leaked more than 3 million barrels into the Gulf in 2010. —

Another major topic of Scott’s presentation was on the new face of oil production in America and how oil will not reach more than $50-$60 a barrel any time soon, barring a major war in the Middle East. This is around half of their mid2014 levels. Due to the advent of shale drilling, advancements in efficiency and technology, and companies haggling with suppliers for cheaper supplies, the price of oil will most likely continue to fluctuate toward equilibrium or a “break-even point” on the price of oil sold versus the cost, he said. “Shale was a real revolution. It’s causing this weird thing to happen that will cause everything to move toward the break-even point,” Scott said. “Any time the price goes above the breakeven point, the suppliers are going to want more money, which will bring the price down. When the price goes below the break-even, the companies are going to ask for cheaper supplies.” Here, according to the report, is how some local companies are dealing with the downturn: Edison Chouest, a Galliano-based company that builds and operates oilfield supply boats, will see a difficult year in 2018.

The company’s shipyard in LaShip has fallen from 1,000 employees to 500, but is unlikely to shut down. The same can be said for the company’s Port Fourchon repair yard even though it employs less than 100 workers. However, if the oil industry does not recover soon, the North American Shipyard in Larose, which employs 500-600 people, may be forced to close. To maintain crew levels, Chouest has gone from a work schedule of 28 days on, 14 days off to 14 on, 14 off. Thoma-Sea Shipyard in Houma currently employs 350 people and should remain stable due to diversifying into other types of shipbuilding such as for the Coast Guard and Pacific fishing trawlers along with taking on blue and brown water tug and barge repair. The company is also trying to get a Navy contract that could add 150 more jobs. Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport has stabilized due to a 58-boat contract with the Coast Guard to build fast response cutters, which should keep the 800 people Bollinger employs working until 2024 and its 150-person repair yard at Port Fourchon going until at least 2019 according to the report. Gulf Island Fabricators in Houma has

bounced back to 1,000 employees and has taken on work building windmills for wind farm platforms in the northeast Atlantic along with research vessels for Oregon State University. The company has also diversified into brown water, military and river cruise vessels. Danos, based in Gray, should remain stable until 2019, according to Scott and has secured a new contract with Hess Oil. Port Fourchon has an $888 million LNG energy export facility in the works that should hopefully be finished by 202223 that could employ as many as 200 people. The port is seeking approval from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the port to 30 feet to allow for larger ships and has picked up three new leases with Oceaneering, FCC Environmental and Omni Energy Services Corp.

skin and eye irritation. Robichaux, a former state senator, said he wrote to local politicians several times trying to raise awareness on the issue but never received a response. So against the advice of his attorney, he opened a detox program for his patients. “I did it anyhow because I had so many friends who were ill with this and there was nowhere else for them to turn, nothing else they could do. Out of desperation we decided to go along with this, although I was apprehensive on whether or not it would be effective,” Robichaux said. Out of the 112 sick people who participated in the detox program, which included sitting in a 188-degree sauna for alternating periods of time, everyone showed

improvements, Robichaux said. “It was phenomenal. It was beyond belief the results we got,” Robichaux said. Although the detox program helped alleviate the symptoms, some patients suffered from long-term effects, such as memory loss and other mental issues, Robichaux said. Jorey Danos, of Chackbay, was one of the local men who experienced significant lasting health issues, which he credits to his time working with the oil spill clean-up effort. Danos worked the cleanup from May to August in 2010 in Venice and Grand Isle where workers were not given safety instructions or proper safety gear, he said.

stop, but Borne refused to stop, and he turned northbound onto LA Highway 308. He forced several drivers off the roadway as he continued to the Larose area, eventually turning onto LA 657, and then turning southbound onto LA 3235. At that time, Borne began firing several rounds from a handgun in the direction of pursuing deputies, and he continued firing at deputies at various points throughout the pursuit. Borne continued southbound and turned left onto West 134th Place where a male passenger jumped out of the vehicle. Borne later crossed the Galliano Pontoon Bridge and proceeded north on East Main Street. When the truck he was driving ran out of fuel, Borne pulled off the highway in the area of East 104th Street in Cut Off. At that point, Borne attempted to flee on foot, but deputies quickly surrounded him and ordered him to surrender. Borne, who still possessed the handgun, fired a single round into the ground and held the firearm to his own head. Deputies continued to speak to him and convinced him to drop the gun and surrender. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Deputies had detained Borne’s passenger after he bailed out of the vehicle. Investigators learned that as the pursuit began, the passenger requested to exit the vehicle multiple times, but Borne pointed the gun at him refusing to allow him to exit the vehicle. Detectives also discovered several bullet holes in the tailgate area of the stolen truck Borne was driving, as well as a business on West Main Street in Galliano. There are no known injuries as a result of the incident. The investigation is ongoing. Borne has been booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux on the eight contempt warrants. He was additionally charged with four counts of Attempted First Degree Murder of a Peace Officer, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Illegal Use of Weapons, and two counts of Theft of a Motor Vehicle. His total bond is set at $1,895,000. Sheriff Webre thanks the fellow law enforcement agencies that responded to assist, including Louisiana State Police Troop C, Louisiana Probation and Parole, Golden Meadow Police

Washing your hands is the best way to prevent the spread of the flu after such contamination. Teaching your child to cover his or her nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and to wash his or her hands immediately after coming into contact with any infected fluids, including their own, will help them keep both themselves and others safe from infection. Newly infected adults and caregivers are able to spread the flu as early as one day before showing symptoms and will continue to be contagious up to seven days after the symptoms have begun. Dr. Frank Welch, medical director for the Louisiana Department of Health Immunization Program, said while the flu shot protects individuals from getting the flu, it also keeps people from spreading it to others who are more vulnerable. “Some people are not eligible for a flu shot, which makes it especially important that others in the community get vaccinated,” Welch said. “Although a young, healthy person might not get very sick from the flu, they can be a carrier and pass it on to someone in a high-risk group who might become seriously ill.” Welch added the flu shot is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, who can pass on antibodies to their babies that will help protect them. The flu shot starts to offer partial protection immediately, but takes about two weeks to offer full protection. Flu shots are now available at local pharmacies, clinics, doctor’s offices and federally qualified (community) health centers. Check flushot.healthma p.org for a flu shot provider near you. Visit www.ldh.la.gov/fig httheflu for more information and resources. The nasal flu spray has been shown to be ineffective over the past several years, and is no longer recommended by the CDC. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Your motivation must come from within this week, Aquarius. Others are not around to be your cheer squad. Your inner drive is there; it just may need a boost. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, keep to yourself this week if you feel unwanted conflict is coming. Enjoy some solitary time until the waters calm down.

Supervised Visitation and Monitored Exchange Center. “The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to be a strong advocate for victims of domestic violence,” said Sheriff Webre. “In many cases, the victims of domestic violence feel helpless and feel they are unable to fight back. We want to reassure those victims that we are here fighting for them daily. We encourage everyone to join us on October 24 to remember those who have died as a result of domestic violence and honor the survivors.” For more information about the vigil, please contact The P.A.C.T. Place at (985) 532-4390. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, help is available! Call the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Police Social Services at (985) 4494476.

What a Life!

St. Ignatius on the way to his death encourages an Asian community

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote seven letters to various churches while he was in chains on his way to his death in the Roman Coliseum. The following is part of the letter he wrote to the Trallians in Asia. Tralles is a town near Aydin, Turkey. “Full hearty greetings and every good wish from Ignatius also known at Theophorus to the holy church at Tralles in Asia. You are dear to God, the Father of Jesus Christ, elect and a real credit to him, being completely at peace because of the Passion of Jesus Christ, who is our hope, since we will rise in union with him. “Well do I realize what a character you have – above reproach and steady under strain. It is not just affected, but it comes naturally to you, as I gathered from Polybius, your bishop. By God’s will and that of Jesus Christ, he came to me in Smyrna, and so heartily congratulated me on being a prisoner for Jesus Christ that in him I saw your whole congregation. I welcomed, then, your godly good will and I gave thanks that I found you to be following God. “An ancient writer gives us this advice, ‘Let no one be called good who mixes good with evil.’ For they speak of Christ, not that they may preach Christ, but that they may reject Christ. They speak of the law, not that they may establish the law, but that they may proclaim

things contrary to it. For they alienate Christ from the Father, and the law from Christ. “They also defame his being born of the Virgin; they are ashamed of his cross; they deny his passion, and they do not believe his resurrection. They introduce God as a Being unknown. They suppose Christ to be unbegotten; and as to the Spirit, they do not admit that he exists. Some of them say that the Son is a mere man, and that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are but the same person, and that the creation is the work of God, not by Christ, but by another strange power. Be on your guard, therefore, against such persons. “Cloth yourselves in meekness, be renewed in faith, that is the flesh of the Lord, and in love, that is the blood of Jesus Christ. Let no one cherish any grudge against their neighbor. Do not give any Gentiles the occasion to speak evil of us because of a few foolish people. For, ‘Woe to them by whose vanity my name is blasphemed among the people.’ “Jesus loved us when he gave himself a ransom for us, that he might cleanse us by his blood from our old ungodliness, and bestow life on us when we were almost on the point of perishing through the depravity that was in us. He is our only hope. “Be careful, therefore, to take part only in the one Eucharist. For there is only one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and one cup to unite us with his blood, one altar and one bishop with the presbyters and deacons, who are his fellow servants. Then, whatever you do, you will do according to God. “My friends, I overflow with love for you and with a joyous heart I make you strong although it is not so much I but Jesus Christ. Although imprisoned for his sake, I fear more be-
