19-year-old killed in early Thursday morning crash
VALENTINE, LA – Shortly before 5:30 Thursday morning, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash on LA 308 south Wof the Valentine Bridge. The crash took the life of 19-year old Robbie Istre of Cut Off. The preliminary investigation revealed Istre was traveling north on LA 308 in a 2007 Ford F-150 when, for reasons still under investigation, he entered a right curve in the roadway, crossed the center line, and ran off the roadway to the left. Istre’s vehicle then struck a tree and he suffered fatal injuries as a result. He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. See Accident Page 3-A

Wetlands forum highlights action and initiatives to push coastal restoration forward
THIBODAUX, LA - At the Coastal Wetland Communities Adaptation Leadership Forum, hosted by the America’s WET LAND Foundation (AWF) at Nicholls State University, a recurring theme emerged Louisiana’s coastal communities will survive the rising tide as local governments have taken extraordinary measures and partnered with the state and private industry to save the state’s disappearing coastline. Terrebonne Parish President Gordon “Gordy” Dove and Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District Executive Director Reggie Dupre, Jr. told the 75 participating coastal leaders how almost $1 billion in locally led restoration projects were made possible because the people of Terrebonne and Lafourche Parish voted to tax themselves and partner with the state, finding innovative solutions to save their land. “I honestly believe with another Ike, or another Rita, we would have a 90% reduction in homes going under water, but we could become a victim of our own success,” Dupre explained. “We want the feds to become a partner in these local projects

government has been slow to move some hurricane protection projects forward. The Morganza-tothe-Gulf project was authorized in 1992 to provide hurricane protection for Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. “But not a single dime has been spent by the federal government on this project, Kline noted, “and that’s not acceptable. Kline said the time is right for private companies to play a role in coastal restoration, not only in partnership with the state, and commended the America’s WETLAND Foundation for proposing an inventory of privately funded restoration initiatives designed consistent with the state’s coastal master plan. “This great ecosystem will be changing and we will never have a silver bullet to fix it all, but discussions like these continue to move the ball forward. We need to keep selling how important this issue is until it becomes part of the national psyche, concluded Representative Zeringue.

He also said Lasseigne lacked the “people skills to do the job. Lorraine has asked for Cantrelle to nominate Lasseigne to the position permanently. Cantrelle has until Sept. 8 to make his next nomination. “I’ll put up somebody and y’all vote, Cantrelle said. “This is getting ridiculous and the public doesn’t like it either. Some members of the council said Lasseigne was “running the parish even before being named interim administrator. As the council prepared to vote, Gros said, “He’s going to be doing the same thing except signing checks. After the council had voted to remove him from the interim position, Kelsey Benoit of the Choctaw area told the council that he had been threatened by Lasseigne. He alleged that Lasseigne recorded him during a conversation he had over a Community Action service for a friend. When he filed a public records request for that recording, Benoit said, he later received a “threatening call from Lasseigne. Lasseigne said parish employees felt threatened by Benoit’s presence at the office and that he never recorded the conversation. “I wish I had a recording, because I’d make you a liar, Lasseigne said. As Benoit made an attempt to leave the meeting, Lasseigne called him a “punk. “And that’s why he got fired, Councilman Jerry Lafont said. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam@houmatoday.com. Launches
Sunday, September 2, 2018 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
From 1-A
(Some launchers are still unsure if they should put money in the pay box which is also still near the sign.) A “Launch at Your Own Risk parish sign stands prominently at the entrance — and, truth be told, it is definitely a risk. The launch has no lighting. The bulkhead next to the launch ramp is still in disrepair with old creosote beams bobbing precariously in the water exposing enough concrete and iron protrusions to make any boat owner think twice about tying up there. And debris is everywhere. It’s a place begging for a lawsuit. When asked at Tuesday’s public meeting about plans for the launch, President Cantrelle said he has delayed improvements because of manpower shortages within his Public Works department and the need to move workers to more urgent jobs such as grass cutting. But parish employees have been working on the Leighton Launch in Thibodaux and Sheriff’s Office trustees have been used at Delta Farms to do some
housekeeping. Cantrelle promised more work will be done in Larose when time and manpower permit it. “There’s a lot more to come. It’s essential for the people of Larose. I guarantee we will be working on that boat launch, said Cantrelle. Cantrelle said there is money set aside for all boat launches and he promised structural work on walkways and LED lighting at the Delta Farms launch, but he gave no time line for the improvements. The 2018 Enacted Lafourche Parish Operating, Maintenance and Capital Budget shows a line item of $45,000 out of the parish’s Recreation Fund for the “Delta Farms Boat Launch Lighting and Launch Improvements to “provide better recreational op-
portunities for Parish residents and visitors using (the) launch. When that will happen is anybody’s guess.

Police: Synthetic marijuana leaving many users unconscious
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Police in southwest Louisiana are warning residents that dozens of people have been quickly knocked out by ingesting synthetic marijuana. The Lake Charles
Police Department says it has handled 30 incidents in the past few days, and Acadian Ambulance reports taking about 45 people to hospitals since Friday. A police department statement Tuesday says the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office also has dealt with similar calls. Police say a drug task force is trying to understand what is making the chemical so dangerous. Synthetic marijuana has been illegal in Louisiana since 2010, but can be found under
names such as K2 and Spice. Police say new brands called Bubblegum and Gumbo have surfaced and may be those causing the health problems. ___

In both school systems, more than half of all students, including those who are economically disadvantaged or those with disabilities, demonstrated top growth on English and math assessments.

What a Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd
We must honestly deal with the culture that allowed the abuse of children
The recent report of the Pennsylvania grand jury on clerical sexual abuse has shaken the faith of many people in Southern Louisiana and our whole country. The number of victims and perpetrators mentioned in the report is staggering. The pain and hurt inflicted on children over decades; the lives of hundreds of individuals and families whom these crimes have severely affected upset all of us. Moreover the coverups that failed to protect these children and end this sinful behavior are appalling and bewildering. As a Catholic priest for 54 years, I would like to apologize to anyone who has ever been a victim of sexual abuse by any member of the church’s personnel. I am sorry for any harm or pain anyone might have experienced and if I can do anything to ease that pain, please let me know. I do believe that God’s compassionate love and Jesus’ healing power will bring us through this difficult time. However, we as a Church must honestly and persistently deal with the culture that allowed the abuse of children to continue. We must address the sins committed in our communities, address the suffering and trauma it has caused, and work to bring healing and justice to its victims. We must also radically change the culture that permitted and protected it. Addressing this problem in an open letter, Pope Francis said, “Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain. So it is urgent that we again reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults.” When the Archbishop ordained me a priest in December 1963, I was still in the seminary. During the spring semester of 1964, six of us newly ordained went to six different Catholic Churches in the Archdiocese of New Orleans on a rotating basis for weekend pastoral experience. When I went to one parish, several altar boys were hanging around the rectory. I talked with them and some of them revealed to me that they were being sexual abused by the associate pastor. I knew the Pastor very well and reported this information to him. The Archbishop removed the priest from active ministry. However, no criminal charges were brought against the priest. Nothing to my knowledge was done to help the altar servers deal with the abuse. Everything was

kept quiet. Maybe some of us remember the Fr. Gauthe case in the Lafayette Diocese. He was accused of sexually assaulting 27 youth over a period of years. Bishop Gerard Frey was on the hot seat because he knew about the abuses and moved the priest from parish to parish. I was a deacon under Bishop Frey when he was at St. Francis de Sales Church in Houma. He is not an evil man. He just did what everyone was doing at the time – trying to give the priest a chance to repent. Other Bishops should have learned from the Lafayette and Boston situations but unfortunately they did not. Sexual abusers do not change. They need to be removed from their society. Most cases uncovered in Pennsylvania were old cases. Many per-

petrators went to a high school seminary where they were isolated and did not go through the normal psycho-sexual development that ordinary teenagers experience. They did not date or have much contact with young women. When they were under pressure, they acted out shamefully. I want to close with the words of Pope Francis, “Penance and prayer will help us open our eyes and our hearts to other people’s sufferings and to overcome the thirst for power and possessions that are so often the root of those evils. May fasting and prayer open our ears to the hushed pain felt by children, young people and the disabled. Make us hunger and thirst for justice that impels us to walk in the truth, supporting all the judicial measures that may be necessary.”
