Port Fourchon receives $16 million grant to build new airport road By Julia Arenstam Daily Comet Staff Writer
The Greater Lafourche Port Commission has received a $16 million grant for a new bridge and roadway around Port Fourchon. Parts of Louisiana’s congressional delegation announced the grant last Thursday after speaking with U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. The Port Commission plans to build a new bridge and roadway that will connect the South Lafourche Airport in Galliano with La. 1 and Port Fourchon. The federal grant will account for about 47 percent of the project cost, estimated to be $35 million, Sen. Bill Cassidy wrote in a letter of support in July. The project will construct a new threelane lift bridge over Bayou Lafourche and
a new two-lane 2,000-foot road between La. 1 and La. 3235 to help divert traffic and increase safety, U.S. Sen. John Kennedy’s office said. (This grant) will allow for collaboration on local, state, and federal levels to provide intermodal connectivity between the South Lafourche Leonard Miller, Jr. Airport and Port Fourchon,” said Chett See Port Page 3-A

According to a recent North Lafourche Levee District newsletter, the levee district has completed projects that raise Lockport to Larose Reaches A1, A2 and the Claudet Return Levee to 7.5 feet in elevation, significantly increasing flood protection for the vulnerable Town of Lockport. The A1, A2, Claudet Return, and Company Canal levees along the Bayou Lafourche ridge form a ring levee around the town of Lockport, which currently has some land that sits at less than 1 foot above sea level. As a result of NLLD building this levee system higher and stronger, the system is currently tied together with +7.5 feet of protection, greatly reducing the flood risk for the residents and businesses of Lockport. The A1, A2 and Claudet Return Levee represent an investment of over $2.8 million for flood protection in this area.
Ardoin wins election for Louisiana secretary of state BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Republican Kyle Ardoin has retained the Louisiana secretary of state’s job he’s been performing since May, winning a special election Kyle Ardoin Saturday that was set in motion when his former boss stepped down in a sexual harassment scandal. Ardoin defeated Democrat Gwen Collins-Greenup, a little-known candidate who significantly lagged in fundraising, to keep the position as state elections chief. The runoff election fills the remaining year of the term of Tom Schedler, a Republican who resigned as secretary of state amid allegations he sexually harassed one of his female employees. “The secretary of state’s office is turning the page and entering a new chapter, a chapter I believe will be the most meaningful and impactful in history,” Ardoin said in his victory speech. “Our administration will not be defined by change. Rather, we will continue to expand upon the excellent work of the women and men of our office.”

Ardoin From 1-A
Ardoin and CollinsGreenup emerged the top two vote-getters in a nine-person November primary for the position overseeing elections, state archives, business registrations and some museums, such as the Old State Capitol. Ardoin, Schedler’s chief aide from Baton Rouge and a former lobbyist, surprised opponents and political watchers when he signed up as a candidate in the final minutes of the registration period — after repeatedly saying he didn’t intend to run. He used conservative talking points about protecting voter integrity, and he positioned himself as an incumbent with a slogan of “Keep Kyle” though he’s only been in the top job seven months. He suggested his work in the agency for nearly a decade would keep him from needing “on-thejob training.” “I’m proud of the record of this office,” Ardoin said. “I feel like we have put this office on a trajectory for success, even after the difficult times we’ve faced.” The secretary of state’s office is in the middle of a multimilliondollar effort to replace Louisiana’s voting machines, but the work has stalled for months amid criticism the agency mishandled the bid process. A contract award was voided, and no timeline has been issued for restarting the work to replace the 13-

Port From 1-A
Chaisson, executive director of Port Fourchon. The project is part of the port’s larger plan to enhance the South Lafourche Airport, which provides air support to rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. “Port Commission Executive Director Chett Chiasson’s leadership and hard work on this BUILD grant will do enormous good in our efforts to continue growing our port,” Kennedy said. The port generates an estimated $2.6 billion in business and $652 million in local household earnings annually. It currently services 250 companies and more than 90 percent of the Gulf’s deepwater oil production. “Port Fourchon is a hub of economic activity, and as America continues to be a leading oil and gas producer, improving access to our offshore rigs is crucial,” U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise said. “Construction of this industrial corridor will not only be a boon to our local economy, but has incredible national significance because of the importance of American energy production.” The project is part of a $41.1 million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development grant package awarded to the state. The remaining $25 million will be used to widen Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam @houmatoday.com. Wife released after reporting she shot her abusive husband
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Authorities in a New Orleans suburb say a woman who reported that she had fatally shot her husband has been released without charges. The shooting happened Friday night in Metairie. A statement Saturday from the Jefferson Sheriff’s Office said the woman called shortly before 9 p.m. to say she had shot her husband, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The statement said the woman had evidence of years of physical and psychological abuse. She also had multiple physical injuries that gave credence to her story that she shot her husband Saturday because she feared for her life. An investigation was continuing and the results were to be turned over to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office. ___
Ochsner hikes minimum wage by $4 an hour to $12
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s largest nonprofit health care system, Ochsner Health System, is raising its minimum wage to $12 per hour — about $4 per hour more than the roughly 1,200 affected employees were previously making. The New Orleans Advocate reports that Ochsner made the an-
nouncement Thursday. The move is effective Jan. 20 and will affect more than 1,200 employees across the system. Ochsner is also the state’s largest private employer. The legal minimum wage is currently at $7.25 but Ochsner was already paying a minimum of $8.10 per hour. The health care company made the change based on recommendations drawn from a recent human resources review. The review focused on initiatives to improve the financial well-being of its employees. Rat found in vending machine at Florida high school
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Students at a Florida high school found an unwelcome surprise in a vending machine: a rat climbing the rows of packaged snacks and drinks. Video of the rat shot by an 11th-grader quickly spread on social media among students at Atlantic Community High school in Delray Beach. In the video aired by news station WPTV, the brown rat appears as large as a snack-size bag of chips. A Palm Beach County Schools statement says the vending machine was quickly locked Tuesday to keep students from using it. The district says the vending machine company was alerted and an exterminator was called to the school. Student Kael Williams said the incident was particularly disgusting because students eat from that machine throughout the day.
