Money stolen in two incidents at Raceland casino
A reward is being offered for information leading to arrests in separate incidents wherein cash was stolen from a Raceland casino on U.S. Highway 90. The first incident occurred on Friday, November 24. Through investigation, detectives learned an unidentified male subject had been gambling inside the casino for some time. At one point, the man approached the cashier’s counter, distracted the cashier, and stole a wallet-style money bag from behind the counter and immediately left the store. The incident was captured on surveillance video. Detectives have determined the man was driving a white SUV, believed to be a 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5-ft., 9-inches tall with a beard. See Casino Page 2-A

Louisiana State Police leader: Agency facing ‘darkest days’ By MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press

Wait? What? Who? Little Zayne Arceneaux from Lockport doesn’t quite know what to make of Mrs. Claus Friday night during the Town of Lockport’s Tree Lighting festivities. The event was held the night before the town’s annual Christmas Parade. If you want to see Santa and Mrs. Claus again this weekend, visit the Lockport American Legion Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for their first annual Holiday Craft Show. Plate lunches will also be available for purchase.
LPSO urges community to remain safe this holiday shopping season Holly McKeon, Contributing Writer
The bustle of the holiday shopping season is here and even though Black Friday has come and gone, there’s still lots of shopping left to be done. Consumers are carefully preparing their shopping lists for gift giving and hitting the malls, big box, and online stores to spend their hardearned money in exchange for smiles from gift recipients. Criminals, on the other hand, prefer
to take what is not theirs, lurking in the shadows and preying on unsuspecting people. Sheriff Craig Webre issued a public message about the importance of safety and tips to shoppers during the next several weeks. Criminals certainly do not take time off during the holidays. If anything, they are working overtime to see who their next target will be. In the announcement Webre stated, “While some of us may take some time off during the holidays, criminals do not. We will certainly continue to do our job to keep the community safe. See Shop Safe Page 2-A

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The leader of the Louisiana State Police said Monday that his agency is facing some of the “darkest days” it’s ever had, rocked by scandals from his predecessor involving improper use of public tax dollars. Col. Kevin Reeves acknowledged that morale has taken a hit. But he said the controversies stem from “the actions of a few” and don’t reflect the conduct of the entire state police agency. He said he doesn’t believe there’s a culture of inappropriate activity. “I don’t want to see all of the troopers painted with a broad brush,” Reeves said. Reeves, a 27-year veteran of the state police, took the helm in March, appointed by Gov. John Bel Edwards after the agency’s longest-serving superintendent, Mike Edmonson, retired amid questions about lax spending practices and criticism of his leadership. Since Edmonson’s exit, more criticism has emerged about inappropriate conduct. “Personally, I think that these are some of the darkest days that state police has had, and as a career state trooper, that’s troubling to me,” Reeves said. When he took over, Reeves launched a “top-to-bottom assessment of our agency,” work that he said continues to determine if the LSP has proper priorities and standards. See State Police Page 3-A

The Central Lafourche High School Performing Arts Club will present Mr. Scrooge’s Christmas, an entertaining holiday play for the whole family. The Club will perform this Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Dec. 9, for two performances, one at 2 and again at 7 p.m., in the school’s auditorium. HOUMA, La. (AP) — Working with dogs has taught Eddie Rodrigue a lot about life. He believes the more effort you put into it the more you will get out of it. “You’ve got to have patience,” the former Thibodaux Police K-9 handler said. “A lot of people want a well-disciplined dog but don’t want to put the time and effort in. You can send the dogs off to any training in the world, but if you don’t spend enough time with them when they get home they just revert back to the way they were. It’s kind of like raising kids. If you don’t put in the time, you never know what you’re going to get at the end of the day.” Since leaving law enforcement two years ago, the Raceland native now owns and operates his own dogtraining service, Rodrigue’s Cajun K9 in Thibodaux. He offers courses on everything from service dogs to obedience. See Trainer Page 3-A

Shop Safe From 1-A
“If you remain vigilant of your surroundings, minimize distractions, and use common sense, you can help us protect you and your family from being victimized.” Here are some useful tips for staying safe this shopping season. It is essential to remain aware of your surroundings, park in well-lit areas, and keep car doors locked while shopping. Try not to carry cash. Use checks or credit cards and bring only what you will be using to make purchases. Carry these items in your front pocket instead of your back pocket or purse. Do not post on social media where or when you are shopping. Doing so allows predators to know that you are not home. When parking, stay away from large objects such as trees and dumpsters, which are easy hiding spots. Try not to park near larger capacity vehicles like vans or vehicles with dark tinted windows. Change parking locations each time you store purchases in your vehicle and place bags in the trunk of your car or out of sight on the floorboard with a blanket or other camouflage over items. Although moving parking spots may seem a little over the top, it is well worth it in the event criminals are watching and waiting to strike vehicles with recent purchases put inside. Do not advertise high-end purchases. Instead, bring nondescriptive bags to put purchases in since criminals will be on the lookout for designer store bags/boxes. Save large items for last so you do not store them in your vehicle while it is unattended. Stay off your phone when leaving a store. Distracting phone calls will not allow you to remain aware of your sur-

roundings. Wait until you are in your car with the doors locked to check in with loved ones. Another option is to utilize one of many free family locator phone app’s, which generally have a one-step “checkin” process. There is power in numbers so shop with a friend or relative. Thieves are more likely to approach someone who is alone. However, children can be a distraction. It is better to leave them home or with a babysitter. If you are shopping alone, ask a security guard or store liaison to walk you to your vehicle. The ease and convenience to those who shop online can prove valuable to thieves as well. There are videos all over the Internet of criminals stealing packages from doorsteps. Many times, homeowners are actually home at the time of the criminal act! To avoid this scenario playing out with your deliveries opt to have your items held for in-store pickup, require a signature upon delivery, utilize real-time tracking of packages, have items delivered to a trusted neighbor, or even your place of employment if possible. To avoid being a victim of a cyber-crime, be sure to shop at wellknown, trusted stores, using secure pay such as PayPal. Otherwise, ensure the website is se-

then fled the scene in a pickup truck, believed to be a blue 2000 Nissan Frontier, heading east on U.S. Highway 90. The suspect is believed to be approximately 5-ft., 8-inches to 5-ft., 10-inches tall with a short-haired beard. A link to the video showing the suspects can be seen on the LPSO website. Anyone who can identify either suspect, or anyone with any information on these crimes, is asked to submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by phone at 1-800-743-7433 or online at www.crimestoppersbr.or g. Tips can also be submitted using the P3 Tips app on your mobile device. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 in cash if the information leads to an arrest.

As that investigation was continuing, a second incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, November 29. An unidentified male subject entered the casino and walked into the restroom. Through investigation, detectives learned he climbed through the ceiling in the restroom and climbed down over a partition wall. He then crawled into the casino office, stole cash, and exited the casino. He

State Police From 1-A
He’s traveled the state to speak with individual troop commands, to stress professionalism. And he’s changed the state police disciplinary process so a panel determines the appropriate responses to inappropriate behavior, rather than the superintendent. “It is my hope that through all the controversies, all the setbacks that we have in the agency, that we come out better on the other side, we come out stronger, we come out providing a better product,” Reeves said at a luncheon speech to the Press Club of Baton Rouge. Edmonson left after controversy over troopers’ billing thousands of dollars to taxpayers for overtime and expenses on a 2016 road trip to a law enforcement conference in San Diego during which they took sightseeing trips to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Though Edmonson
claimed he hadn’t approved the side trips, a state police review found Edmonson knew about the excursions, was in contact with the troopers throughout the trip and deleted text messages during the investigation. Reeves demoted two high-ranking troopers for the road trip after an internal investigation found the officers falsified time sheets and charged for hours they spent sleeping, touring the sights and playing golf. Other questions have been raised about Edmonson’s spending. The Advocate reported on a scathing draft audit not yet released by the Legislative Auditor’s office that the newspaper said documents widespread misspending by Edmonson, using public tax resources for personal gain. Edmonson hasn’t commented publicly on either the internal state police review or the draft audit. The state police said it has been working with the U.S. attorney’s office and the FBI in re-

viewing Edmonson’s activities. In addition, Reeves suspended a highway traffic enforcement program amid questions about whether troopers were charging for hours they didn’t work. Reeves launched a criminal investigation after seeing surveillance footage from WVUE-TV in New Orleans that appeared to show troopers claiming they worked hours they didn’t. The program won’t be restarted, Reeves said, “until there’s some meaningful change.” Reeves said he hopes to upgrade state police technology to have a computer-aided dispatch system that would let the agency track its troopers’ locations in real time. Lawmakers will be asked to spend $11 million on the system. ___ Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte

Working side-by-side with dogs runs in Rodrigue’s blood. His father handled K-9s for more than 30 years for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and served as his mentor. “I learned everything from him,” said Rodrigue, who’s certified by the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association. “I grew up training police service dogs. I ran my first narcotics dog when I was 11 years old.” Although he grew up surrounded by dogs, Rodrigue became inspired to follow in his father’s footsteps when he was 16 after a burglar broke into a house in Larose and stole a family’s Christmas presents on Christmas day. drigue and his father recovered the presents from the real-life Grinch and returned them to a much-relieved family. “I could not put into words the gratifications I felt when I saw the smiles on those children’s faces when we returned the presents,” Rodrigue said. “From that moment on I always wanted to be a K-9 officer and was truly amazed with what a properly trained K-9 could accomplish.” After 19 years in law enforcement, Rodrigue decided to hang up his badge to free himself up for some much-needed family time. “I don’t train as many police dogs now,” the 38-year-old said. “I kind of cater to the general public, training hunting dogs, obedience dogs and things like that. I wanted to do something so I could spend more time with my kids.” The extra time has given rise to Rodrigue’s second passion — watching his sons flourish on the national rodeo circuit with his wife, Danielle. “I grew up rodeoing,” he said. “I rode bulls when I was younger. I got out of it for a while, but then my oldest son (Jay, 11,) decided he wanted to get on a sheep
about five years ago. It all started from there. Now he lives for it.” Like training K-9s, bull riding amounts to what you put into it, Rodrigue said. “My oldest son finished as reserve world champion last year,” Rodrigue said. “It takes a lot of practice and coordination. People don’t realize how much practice these boys put in. You’ve got to be tough. Bull riding is different than other sports because when they open that gate, there’s nothing a parent can do to make their kid want to ride. The kid has to have

the desire to succeed. He’s got to fight for what he wants.” Meanwhile, Rodrigue’s other sons, Carson, 8, and Cade, 4, successfully compete on the local rodeo circuit. Rodrigue is also passing his dog-training skills to his children just as his father had taught him when he was a boy. “My oldest son is 11 and can work with a bomb-sniffing dog better than anyone else,” Rodrigue said. April hiring planned for Louisiana higher education leader
On November 6, South Lafourche High School hosted a Veteran’s Day Breakfast in honor of all our veterans. Cadets from the Army JROTC program, parents from the JROTC booster club, students of South Lafourche, and our lunch staff helped organize this event by making decorations and providing a wonderful breakfast meal for the veterans. Thank you everyone who helped and thank you veterans for your service!

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s top college board intends to choose the state’s next higher education commissioner in April. The Advocate reports that Robert Levy, chairman of the Board of Regents’ six-member search committee, said Tuesday the panel hopes to have final interviews with contenders around April 4. Joseph Rallo, in the commissioner’s job since January 2015, plans to retire from the position that pays him $364,000 a year. Although his contract ends in December, Rallo has agreed to stay until June while the board searches for a new commissioner. ___
US rig count rises by 6 this week to 929, Texas up 4
HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. went up by six this week to 929. That’s a significant rise from 597 rigs that were active this time a year ago. According to Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes, 749 rigs were drilling for oil and 180 for natural gas this week. Baker Hughes released its tabulation Friday. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained four rigs to reach 454 total. Kansas, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Utah each added one. Louisiana and Colorado each lost one rig. Others were unchanged.

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. They decide to go to the doctor for a checkup. The doctor tells them that they’re physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. His wife asks, “Where are you going? “To the kitchen, he replies. “Will you get me a bowl of ice cream? “Sure. “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it? she asks. “No, I can remember it. “Well, I’d like some strawberries on top, too. You’d better write it down, because you know you’ll forget it. He says, “I can remember that! You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries. “I’d also like whipped cream. I’m certain you’ll forget that, so you’d better write it down! she retorts. Irritated, he says, “I don’t need to write it down, I can remember it! Leave me alone! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream — I got it, for goodness sake! Then he grumbles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.
~ Luke 5:16
She stares at the plate for a moment and says, “Where’s my toast?
