Edwards to lawmakers in session: ‘Let’s turn this tide’
By Bridget Mire Daily Comet Staff Writer
The state 1st Circuit Court of Appeal affirmed a Thibodaux man’s convictions and sentences for the 2013 killings of a confidential informant and her acquaintance. A jury on Jan. 27 found 22year -old Traveyon Blackledge guilty of Traveyon second-deBlackledge gree murder in the shootings of 41-year-old Nikki Landry, of Larose, and 54-yearold Harry Lefort, of Cut Off. Their bodies were found Sept. 22, 2013, in Landry’s apartment. Blackledge was given two life sentences without the possibility of parole. Authorities said Blackledge’s father, 39year-old Toronzo Thompkins, of Raceland, ordered him and 39year-old Jerrard Major Sr., of Raceland, to kill Landry. She was set to testify against Thompkins in his cocaine distribution trial the day after she and Lefort were found dead. Thompkins was convicted of cocaine distribution anyway and is See Appeal Page 3-A

This is the time of year when hundreds of bald eagles are nesting and hatching their chicks in the forests and swamps of Louisiana, which now ranks as one of the population centers for bald eagles. Only Florida hosts more eagle nests annually. In the last statewide eagle count a couple of years ago, 353 nesting pairs were found that’s over 700 adult eagles, producing hundreds of baby bald eagles every year in Louisiana. Ten years ago the bald eagle was no longer considered endangered or threatened. However, it is still protected under federal law. Wildlife and fisheries researchers have found bald eagles nesting in nearly every part of Louisiana, but the largest concentration is in St. Charles and St. Mary parishes, and especially Terrebonne Parish. This bald eagle was spotted Saturday afternoon in the Lake Fields area behind Lockport.
Local non-profits benefit from Coach “O” Committee donations By Larry D. Weidel, Contributing Writer
It was about this time last year, on February 17th, that the community of south Lafourche gave one of the largest celebrations ever held locally to honor a favorite son of the bayou area. When Larose native Ed “Be Be” Orgeron, Jr. was named head coach of the LSU Tigers, members of this community and fans from all over the state gathered together to organize a banquet honoring Coach “O” for his achievement and to also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1977 State Championship Football Team on which Coach “O” played. It has been estimated that over 1,600 people attended this banquet and the entire event was a great success thanks to the local community, the sponsors, the cooks, the volunteers, and Larose Civic Center staff. This event was the brainchild of a group of local guys who called themselves the Coach “O” Committee, later to become the Coach “O” Day Board of Directors. This became a non-profit organization
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — After two years of inability to reach a permanent financing deal with the Republican-led Legislature, Gov. John Bel Edwards called on lawmakers Monday to pass long-term tax changes to close Louisiana’s latest budget gap and end a decade’s worth of financial uncertainty. The Democratic governor spoke to a joint session of the House and Senate as they opened their latest special session, the fifth special session called by Edwards to address budget uncertainty since he took office in 2016. He said he was hopeful “this could be the last.” “My number one goal is to put this problem behind us so we can get back to the business of making our state an even better place to live, to work, to retire or to pursue an education,” Edwards said. “But I need you to follow through with your end of the bargain and work with me.” Lawmakers and the governor are staring down a $1 billion budget hole that hits July 1, caused by the looming expiration of temporary taxes passed by lawmakers in 2016. Edwards wants the expiring taxes replaced with other taxes, saying without the revenue, Louisiana will be forced to make damaging cuts to education, health care and public safety programs.
whose mission was to distribute funds from the profits of this banquet to local churches, charities, civic organizations, and special needs of citizens in our community. Coach “O” stated, “I want to use the profits from this banquet to help the poor, the sick, and the hungry in our area.” In this past year, a check for $10,000 was presented to the Larose Civic Center, and donations of more than $30,000 have been made to local churches and nonprofit organizations. Reports back to the Board indicate the monies have gone to help people with electric bills, clothing, food, and disaster assistance such as fires and floods. Some of the churches used the funds they were given to enhance their youth services. One of the recipients of a donation from the Coach “O” Board of Directors was The Bayou Bell Ringers who responded to the Coach “O” Board in this way: “Thank you again for your generous contribution to the Bayou Bell Ringers. You have made it possible for us to replace See Coach “O” Page 3-A

Because of your generosity, we were able to continue our Mission and prepare the group for our Christmas Concerts.” It was Coach O’s intention to visit us again to help raise more monies to give to local charities but scheduling conflicts with him and open dates with the Larose Civic Center could not be resolved and he cannot be here this Spring. He did promise to come back next year and expressed his sincere appreciation to the committee for helping local citizens who have fallen on hard times. Now let’s cheer for LSU and Coach “O” and wish them another winning season this year.

This effort helps prevent pill abuse by allowing people to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs by turning them over to the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force for destruction. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Also, flushing unused medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards. “When a loved one passes away or following a major surgery, there could be a myriad of unused prescription drugs left,” said Sheriff Webre. “If not properly disposed,
they could end up in the hands of relatives or children. We want citizens to be proactive in ridding their homes of these dangerous narcotics, and these drop-off boxes provide a simple means of doing so.” All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers may be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Items that aren’t accepted include intravenous solutions, injectable drugs, and syringes.
Appeal

serving a life sentence. He was also later convicted of Landry’s murder and found guilty of negligent homicide in Lefort’s death. Major is still awaiting trial. Blackledge’s attorneys for his appeal argued that portions of jail calls made by Thompkins to people other than Blackledge shouldn’t have been allowed as evidence. Thompkins had called several other people in an effort to get in touch with his son. The 1st Circuit determined that the calls were made “in furtherance of the conspiracy” to kill Landry and showed the defendant’s motive. Blackledge’s attorneys also argued that his police statements should have been excluded as evidence because of an intellectual disability. State District Judge Walter Lanier, who presided over Blackledge’s trial, heard testimony that the defendant’s IQ was as low as 40. However, he accepted Gretna forensic psychologist Rafael Salcedo’s theory that Blackledge purposely gave wrong answers in an evaluation to make himself appear mentally handicapped.
Blackledge told detectives that he and Major entered Landry’s apartment and he shot Lefort. His cellphone records showed he’d called Landry the night of Sept. 21, 2013, and that he was at the scene in the early morning of Sept. 22, 2013. “During the interviews, the defendant gave a willing account of the events,” the 1st Circuit said in its judgment. “He provided responsive, intelligent answers to questions and gave a comprehensible account of the facts of the offenses. There was no indication that the defendant ever asked for an attorney despite being repeatedly advised of his rights. Further, the totality of the interviews clearly conveys that the statements were not being made because of any promises, coercion or threats.” The third reason for Blackledge’s appeal was that, after he refused to testify during his trial, Lanier didn’t tell the jury not to hold that against him. However, the 1st Circuit noted that Blackledge’s trial attorney never objected to the judge’s instructions. Lafourche Assistant District Attorney Joe Soignet, who handles appeals for the District Attorney’s Office, said the 1st Circuit’s judgment confirmed what prosecutors already knew. “It’s apparent they did a great deal of work looking through the record,” he said. “It also validates what the trial court did.” New Orleans attorney Roger Jordan Jr. and Baton Rouge attorney Gwen Brown represented Blackledge for his appeal. Jordan agreed that the 1st Circuit was meticulous in reviewing the filings but said he disagreed with the interpretation of the law. He said the next step will be to appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court.

“I’m going to listen. I’m going to be openminded. But I’m not going to pass taxes without a lot of scrutiny and clarification as to where it will go,” said Rep. Jim Morris, a Republican from Oil City. No lawmaker has offered a proposal to cut $1 billion in state spending. Edwards urged lawmakers who want spending cuts as the only solution to detail them, calling it disrespectful to Louisiana residents to suggest reductions without making “the tough and painful choices.” Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras has said he believes the solution will be a mix of taxes and cuts. “Nobody can credibly cut a billion dollars. That’s not feasible to do that,” said Rep. Tanner Magee, a Houma Republican who said he’ll support some replacement taxes. Republicans who say they’ll consider taxes want that coupled with legislation they say will curb long-term growth in government, such as proposals to tighten Louisiana’s spending cap and add new costshare and work requirements for some Medicaid patients. “I want to see what kind of budget reform passes out before I consider any revenue,” said Rep. Mike Huval, a Breaux Bridge Republican. Even for lawmakers who agree to taxes, Republicans and Democrats diverge on tax types. For example, while some Republicans suggest partial renewal of the expiring 1 percent sales tax, Democrats are resistant to that idea, saying it disproportionately hits the poor. Lawmakers began tax bill hearings Tuesday. ___
Louisiana collecting more state taxes from worker paychecks
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana taxpayers can expect to see a bigger bite out of their paychecks for state taxes. The state revenue department adjusted the amount of money employers withhold from paychecks for state taxes, in response to federal tax law changes approved by Congress and President Donald Trump. The updated withholding tables took effect Friday Louisiana’s income tax laws are tied to federal income tax policy. The changes lowering federal income tax liabilities will boost state tax collections. Louisiana is estimated to receive an additional $226 million in

US rig count remains unchanged at 975
HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. didn’t increase this week, remaining at 975 for the second week in a row. That exceeds the 751 rigs that were active this time a year ago. Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 798 rigs drilled for oil this week and 177 for gas. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Oklahoma increased by five rigs, Alaska gained four and Pennsylvania increased by three. Louisiana lost two.

He proposes raising or maintaining higher taxes on businesses and middle- and upper-income earners, largely ideas from a task force of experts that studied state tax laws. To make the threat of cuts more real, the governor brought guests to his speech who represent programs he said would be on the chopping block without replacement taxes, including a freshman at Southeastern Louisiana University who uses the TOPS college tuition program and a 10girl with year-old disabilities whose family relies on a state health care program. He focused little, however, in his speech Monday about his specific tax plans, saying he was willing to be “flexible” with lawmakers in developing a tax approach. “I am imploring you — let’s turn this tide together,” Edwards said. It’s unclear if he can reach a deal with enough GOP lawmakers for taxes to pass, particularly in the conservative House, where most tax bills must start and where Republicans have blocked previous Edwards tax proposals. Many tax measures require a hefty two-thirds vote.

Last year, Northside did something that not many teams do. They beat South Lafourche’s girls’ basketball team in The Tank – ending the girls’ basketball season in the Round of 8 in the Class 4A State Playoffs. This year, the Lady Tarpons had a shot at revenge and, boy, did they ever pay it back in full. South Lafourche crushed Northside 7042 on Monday night – advancing again to the Round of 8 in the Class 4A State Playoffs. The Lady Tarpons started strong, dominating the game from the early minutes – never bending, nor breaking against the Lady Vikings. Coach Rainie Terrebonne and players said the reason for that was simple: sweet, sweet revenge. “The girls came out and they knew they wanted to take care of business and get this revenge after what happened last year because we are not the same team that we were last year,” Terrebonne said. “It might be the same faces (but it’s) different uniforms and it’s different kids in them. We just came out here and they had that revenge factor that they were ready to get back at them and obviously, we did it.” “We really wanted revenge on them,” senior guard Traya Bruce added. “We just came out and did what we needed to do to get that W.” That they did. South Lafourche pressed the Lady Vikings relentlessly on Monday night, forcing turnovers and creating transition opportunities. The Lady Tarpons led 22-4 at the end of the first quarter, dominating the game with their defensive energy and offensive pace. Senior post Victorianna Nelson had six points in the opening quarter – exactly a year after she was forced to sit out last year’s game between the teams because of a severe knee injury. Nelson said she was motivated to get going early in the game because she wanted to make sure last year’s wrong would be made
right in the rematch. “I knew we had to win,” Nelson said. “I knew we had to come out strong. We couldn’t take any plays off. So we just told each other that we had to come out strong and that’s what we did.” The Lady Tarpons never let up. South Lafourche led 37-20 at halftime, then in the second half, they ballooned their lead out beyond 20 and even past 30 points at times. Bruce led the Lady Tarpons in scoring with 25 points in the win. Senior Kyzha “Tee” Jackson had 18, while Nelson pitched in 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 steals. Terrebonne applauded Jackson’s play as being huge in the win, but she said she’s proud of all 11 varsity players who saw the floor, adding that every, single player executed the team’s game plan flawlessly. “This was a great team win,” Terrebonne said. “Ramey (Messer) played a heck of a game out there. Tee played well. Elizabeth (Curole), you know, she had the defense always. Mac (Bynum) came off the bench and did well. Abigail (Bouzigard) played well. Sierra (Lerille), Caroline (Curole), Na’laysia (Mack), Bre’ylynn (Jackson) … they all came in and did what we asked them to do.” With the win, the Lady Tarpons survive and advance to the Elite 8 where they will take on No. 7 Minden. Revenge on Monday was sweet, but Bruce and Nelson said they have one last goal in mind – getting past the round in which the team lost last year. “We really want it, so we’ve just got to go out there and get it done,” Bruce said. “It doesn’t matter the team. We’re just going to go hard,” Nelson added. ___ CLHS, SLHS make boys’ playoffs
The two local boys’ basketball teams still have state championship dreams, as well. On Monday afternoon, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association released the boys’ basketball playoff brackets and both South Lafourche and Central Lafourche are in the field. The Trojans earned the No. 12 seed in Class 5A, which will keep them at home in the opening round of the playoffs – a date with No. 21 Southwood. That game will be on Friday night in Mathews. Central Lafourche ended the season as the District 7-5A Co-Cham-

pions after going 9-3 in the league. Southwood is a formidable foe. They’re just 16-14 on the season, but they’ve faced some of the best teams in Louisiana during that grind. Southwood has also lost close in most of its defeats, losing 11 games by 10 points or less. South Lafourche also is facing a fearsome foe. The Tarpons beat CCA on Saturday, which earned them a spot in the playoffs in Class 4A. South Lafourche earned the No. 30 seed which will pit them against No. 3 WoodlawnShreveport on Friday night. This marks the second time in three seasons that the Tarpons make it to the postseason under coach Brian Callais. But their time there will not easily be spent. Woodlawn made the Top 28 last year and has lost just five games all season.

The Central Lafourche High School girls soccer team is headed to the state championship game at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Thursday, February 22 to take on St. Thomas More.
Lady Trojans soccer team makes history Gazette Sports Reports
It’s not often that it can be said in local sports that one team has done something that’s never been done before. But the Central Lafourche girls’ soccer team can say exactly that this season. The Lady Trojans won two road games last week – first against West Ouachita and then against Caddo Magnet – victories which put the team in the Division II State Championship Match for the first time in school history. Central Lafourche will look to cash in on
their storybook season on Thursday night when they take on St. Thomas More in the Championship Match in Lafayette. Lady Trojans coach Jude Blanchard said he knows it will be tough to beat St. Thomas More, but added quickly that win, lose or draw, he believes in his team and knows that they’re enjoying a truly historic ride. “We set out to reach big goals a few years ago when we took over the program and I think this is just a testament to the See CLHS Page 8-A

The cyclists will cover more than 450 miles with overnight stops in Panama City and Walton Beach, Fla., Orange Beach and Mobile, Ala., and Gulfport, Miss. In addition to the physical and psychological benefits of the ride and cycling in general, the 2018 UnitedHealthcare Gulf Coast Challenge also helps raise awareness about America’s heroes’ needs while honoring their courage
both in defending the nation and learning how to address the challenges of daily life upon their return home. Daily routes, stops and events as well as registration information for single or multipleday public riders can be found at ProjectHero.org

kids and their hard work and dedication,” Blanchard said. “I couldn’t be happier for them and their successes throughout the playoffs.” To beat both West Ouachita and Caddo Magnet on the road in a span of just a couple of days is a Herculean feat. The Lady Trojans’ caravan logged hundreds of miles – going from Mathews to North Louisiana round-trip twice in a little more than 72 hours.
That didn’t bother the team, which took it all in stride, winning the first match 3-0, before taking on Caddo Magnet. In that match, the Lady Trojans broke a scoreless tie late in the match on a goal from McKenzie Champagne, which sent the match to its final margin. “It’s been a long week,” Blanchard said. “But I think we’ve made memories and I think even through it all, we all know that we’re closer now because of it.”
