Voters renew taxes in Saturday’s election
Lafourche voters renewed four property taxes for the parish’s school system Saturday. The first three of the taxes are 7.49 mills apiece, and each generate $7.2 million annually. The fourth tax, a 2-mill tax, raises $1.9 million each year. A mill is $1 in tax levied on every $1,000 of taxable property. In Louisiana, the first $75,000 of a home’s value is tax-exempt. Proposition 1: The tax, which the School Board can spend as it decides, flows into the school district’s general operating account. The proposition passed by a margin of 83 percent to 17 percent, or 5,001 votes to 1,038. It will last through 2030. Proposition 2: The tax helps pay for school employees’ salaries. Eighty-four percent of the votes, or 5,077, were See Voters Page 6-A

House Republicans push larger teacher raises in $30B budget By MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A $30 billion state operating budget crafted by House Republicans that began advancing Monday would spend more on public school pay raises than Gov. John Bel Edwards wants, but less on other expenses for school districts. The budget bill for the financial year that begins July 1 would give teachers a $1,200 pay raise and an extra $600 to support workers such as cafeteria staff and custodians — rather than the $1,000 and $500 in salary hikes suggested by the Democratic governor. But lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee spurned a $39 million block grant increase pushed by Edwards and the state education board for school districts to spend as they’d like on things such as mandated retirement costs and technology upgrades. Committee Chairman Cameron Henry said increasing the pay hikes would help move teachers closer to the Southern regional average. “My preference is to give teachers the biggest raise that we possibly can, and support workers,” said Henry, a Jefferson Parish Republican. After nearly a decade of budget gaps, the governor and lawmakers agreed on a seven-year tax compromise last year that ended the years of instability. Now, state revenue collections are growing, and lawmakers are sifting through ideas for how to spend the cash. The budget proposal backed without objection by the Appropriations Committee would increase state spending by $300 million in the 2019-20 financial year. In addition to increasing the school pay raises, House lawmakers used dollars from the improved rev-

Longtime educator remembered for her passion, love of family, teaching By Casey Gisclair, Houma Times
The South Lafourche community is tight-knit — the kind of place where everyone has known everyone else for multiple generations. Linda Guidry Ask the average young adult from those parts about a memorable educator, then mention the name ‘Linda Guidry.’ Immediately, most will smile, then tell the tale of the sweet, but sometimes fiery red-headed educator with a heavy Southern accent who loved to teach, but who loved even more to bring out the potential in her students over the course of her long, successful career in the school system.
Guidry passed away on April 15, surrounded by the comfort of family. She was 73. Family and friends remembered the life of the longtime teacher and principal recently, saying that she was as genuine and passionate in their home as she was in the classroom. Guidry is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Roy Guidry, and daughter Laurie Laine Coleman (Mike) and grandson Charlie, daughter Kristine Collins (Drew) and grandchildren Kanaan and Dru. She is also survived by her step-son Keith Guidry (Paula) and granddaughters Rachel and Ashley, step-daughter Lillie Toups and step-grandchildren Roxie and Lee, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tidelands Golf & Country Club … celebrating 60 years in South Lafourche By Lon Griffin President – Tidelands Golf and Country Club
Tidelands Golf & Country Club is nestled roughly two miles behind South Lafourche High School (SLHS), on the old Bayou Raphael couteau (or ridge). As you enter Tidelands, you’ll be treated to your first iconic view of the golf course, with the #7 green and its cypress trees on your left and the #8 fairway straight ahead looking across the pond with a beautiful row of live oak trees. Tidelands is a beautiful, although modest semi-private 9-hole golf course. With its two tee boxes per hole, each at offsetting positions creating the 18-hole par 72 course, along with its clubhouse restaurant and pro shop, Tidelands has always been open to the public. After all these years its club membership still thrives today. Golfing on the
bayou has remained a relaxing alternative activity, and with friends, even a competitive challenge … all that just two miles behind SLHS. Tidelands Golf & Country Club is truly a unique story, established in 1959 by a visionary group of local business leaders led by Dr. George Perry, designated as the club founder. Back then, the Allain family had just recently donated the large front portion of the bayouside property for what eventually became the new South Lafourche High School in the fall of 1966. Dr. Perry saw the property in the back to be a good fit for creating this golf course in conjunction with the community activity the school would bring. One of Allain’s
main stipulation was it always be open to the public, which it has. As these developers looked for a location to create Tidelands, it seemed a local wooded area comfortably away from the community was a good fit. The beautiful higher ground, laden with palmettos, cypress and oaks trees on each side of the

Average US price of gas spikes 5 cents per gallon to $2.97 CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline jumped 5 cents a gallon (3.8 liters) over the past two weeks, to $2.97. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says Sunday that gas prices have spiked 66 cents since early January. But Lundberg says dropping crude oil costs could mean that prices at the pump will soon stabilize. The highest average price in the nation is $4.14 a gallon in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lowest average is $2.45 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The average price of diesel rose 3 cents over the past two weeks, to $3.17. ___
Diana Ross feels ‘violated’ by airport screener’s touching
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Diana Ross says she feels “violated” by an airport screener who touched her between her legs after she performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. In a series of tweets on Sunday, the Motown legend says she blames the Transportation Security Administration for a screening at the New Orleans airport that makes her want to cry. She said she can “still feel her hands” between her legs, front and back. TSA spokesman Mark Howell said in a statement to The Associated Press that the agency is investigating,
but its initial video review indicates all protocols were followed. He says the agency is committed to treating all travelers with respect and courtesy. Ross tweeted that she was treated like “royalty” while performing but “treated like “sh—” at the airport. Information from: The New Orleans Advoc a t e , http://www.newor leansadvocate.com ___
No mid-May Louisiana release of medical marijuana products
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s first batch of medical marijuana won’t reach the shelves by the mid-May deadline demanded by pharmacists and patients. But June could be a possibility. Louisiana State University’s agricultural center, which oversees one of two state-sanctioned growers, said Friday it expects to have a final therapeutic cannabis product to state regulators for testing by the end of May. The release to dispensing pharmacies will depend on how long the agriculture department takes to do its testing — and on nothing disrupting production plans to get the product to the department. Even when LSU’s grower GB Sciences gets medicinal-grade pot to shelves, it’s expected to be a limited supply for patients with the most severe conditions. It’s unclear who would be on that list. Only the agricultural centers at LSU and Southern University are allowed to grow cannabis. Southern University’s grower, Ilera Holistic Healthcare, started its work after GB Sciences, so it doesn’t expect to provide medical marijuana to pharmacies until the fall.

Holy Rosary St. Vincent de Paul Society warns of counterfeit activity
Our Lady of the Rosary Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is dedicated to serving the needs of the less fortunate and needy of our Larose community. We are here to serve those needs to the best of our ability and to the extent that our finances allow. We are able to do this through the generosity of the kind loving people in our church parish. Individual donations, poor box donations, donations from organizations and proceeds from the thrift store sales are our only means of providing these services and goods. It saddens us to inform the public and especially business establishments that cer-
tain individuals have been using our own organization’s name in issuing checks, which are not valid. The money, which was gotten from these “bogus” checks, was intended to help the poor and less fortunate. This causes us much distress and concern, as we are always ready to help anyone who is in need. We are hereby warning the public to be wary of any check being presented which bears St. Vincent’s name. These are to be considered counterfeit and reported to the Sheriff’s Office and the Church office at 693-3433 as soon as they are detected. We pray that the goodness of the people of our area will far outweigh the evil intent of this activity. Yours in Christ, Irvin Soudelier, President

Tidelands From 1-A
Bayou Raphael, and then mainly accessible by boat via the Breton Canal was a daring starting point. The rest of the development plan would follow once the long-term lease (and still ongoing) from the Allain family was secured. Within a year, the first area of land cleared allowed for 3-holes of golf to be played, although probably crudely fashioned, playable nonetheless. After years of continuous development, with the help and funding of many local c o m m u n i t y leaders/members of the day, Tidelands eventually yielded a cool, little 9-hole golf course by 1962. The original plan was to create a true 18hole course, but for various unknown reasons unfortunately did not happen. Its first full time grounds keeper, Cliff Mosley, along with Andy Griffin, spent their time maintaining the grounds for the members to enjoy golfing. And now continuing to maintain the course is Andy’s grandson, Johnny Moran as grounds superintendent who’s been here full time for the past 36 years after learning the ropes with his grandfather. Early on with the help of Jimmy Barrios and others, who also helped improve the property, the additional other 9-tee boxes was established and was finally in use in the early 1970’s. Tidelands is fortunate to continue having its many dedicated members helping this club in many ways over the years. It’s amazing how this concept has worked over the years, when the older generation steps back the next generation steps up to help.
Developmental stages progressed once the clubhouse was built around 1964 and utilities were extended to the property. Tidelands Golf and Country Club was now for real! The birth of the club’s marquee Shrimp-Oil Tournament began in 1962 and will be celebrating its 57th annual tournament in early June. Tidelands had its first full time PGA professional, John Lund working the pro shop. Several more followed suit over the coming years until it went without a PGA pro in the early 2,000’s. Bill Mulligan, the club’s last PGA professional is still part of Tidelands’ staff in a consultant role, helping out with lessons and his course management knowledge. The country club’s leisure lifestyle prospered well. Membership numbers totaled over 200 for many years. Those who enjoyed tennis, swimming, socials and of course golfing, made this a wonderful place to be. Many of us who grew up in the late 60’s and 70’s with our parents’ membership perks can recall those good times. How times have changed from those good old days with our newer generation of young adults and the advent of the technology age. The bayou culture has changed a lot from what we baby boomers remembered growing up then. However, the physical pleasure and serenity of golfing outdoors with friends and the country club leisure lifestyle is still available and affordable at Tidelands (although with the absence of tennis and swimming). Tidelands still thrives as a golfing community and is open to the public. It’s comprised these days with dedicated members, non-member green fee players/guest and of

“So many people have offered their condolences or memories and thoughts about Mom to us,” daughter Laurie said. “And they all seem to step around a few things — how much she loved her students and they loved her; how she encouraged and inspired so many people; how she made everyone feel special and important — she always had time and kind words for everyone she met.” Guidry was actually not born a Cajun. We’ve just adopted her to the area over time. She’s actually a native Alabamian who traveled around a lot as a child and young adult before marrying husband Roy in her early 30s and coming on to the Bayou. The two were a match made in heaven — both diligent. Linda knew little of the Louisiana life as a child, but often trawled with Roy, and did it well. “My dad always bragged how a woman from Alabama who had never trawled in her life could pick shrimp faster than any of his deckhands,” Laurie said. “She was the hardest working person we knew, I think that’s why she and my dad were a match made in heaven both of their hobbies included working.” Guidry got started as a teacher later than most — going into college when Laurie started school. But family and friends say it was one of her biggest passions and she knew she’d wanted to be in the profession since childhood. “She always played school whenever she’d get the chance,” Laurie said, recalling the words of her mother. When in the classroom, she taught with a passion and energy that became memorable to all those she’d impacted during her lengthy career at Galliano Elementary, then as a principal at Golden Meadow Lower. In the classroom, she’d wow with her “magical” science lessons. She also wore a butterfly on her attire

Laurie said it was a spiritual reminder that sometimes that ugly caterpillar is actually beautiful — just in the same way that Jesus was vilified before dying, then rising again. “Mom used her butterflies as a way to share the word of God with others in hopes that it would inspire people to develop the same relationship with the Lord that she had,” Laurie said. Behind the scenes, family remembers her quiet acts of kindness for those in need. Guidry would put money into a side account in the cafeteria and instruct workers to charge that account when any student couldn’t buy food. She also bought uniforms and supplies for those in need. “She had a heart for those in need,” Laurie said. “My mom once said that when she was a child, she was the student that teachers often turned their nose up towards. She said she was probably ‘the poor kid’ or ‘the dirty kid’ because of different situations in her life. Because of that, she gravitated towards these children and did her best to make them feel special, something that not everyone has a heart for doing.” As a principal, she
also worked magic — albeit in a different way. She gained popularity for her willingness to go to bat for her faculty and staff in their times of need. It’s the same love she showed to family members at home. Laurie said her mother and father worked hard to give their daughters a solid foundation. The family lived in the same home their entire lives, and both daughters are now grown, but live in the same neighborhood. Both, like their mother, are educators. Guidry retired later in life at as her health began to fail, but she adored being a grandmother. She also was an avid gardener (especially when planting things that attracted butterflies and hummingbirds). Guidry also loved to read and shop. In her final days, her health steadily declined, but in those final moments, family members say her strength never showed stronger. She survived breast cancer, severe asthma, Crohn’s and a heart murmur and other cardiovascular issues. After suffering two strokes earlier this year, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. In her final days, she inspired by never bringing attention to her fight, but instead of the feelings of others. “She kept working and never complained,” Laurie said. “She never shed a tear. She never
gave up. She never questioned God. She cared for others. She worried about others. She put everyone else first. Even in her final two months, she was worried that I wasn’t getting enough rest or was doing too much. What an inspiration? To be so selfless. To have such will and fortitude.” —-
GISCLAIR’S NOTE: I was taught by Mrs. Linda Guidry, and like everything mentioned in the story, I, too, can speak to the wonderful impact she had in my educational career. A Linda Guidry high-five as a child meant you were doing something super special, and she had that awesome ability to make us always feel worthwhile — a rare, but admirable trait. To the family, friends and former colleagues, my sincerest thoughts and prayers! financing. State employees would receive another round of salary hikes, under a plan adopted last year. Rep. Walt Leger, a New Orleans Democrat, unsuccessfully sought to rewrite the budget to more closely match the version sought by Edwards, including the flexible block grant for public schools. The committee voted 17-3 against the idea. Additional dollars sought by early childhood education advocates to help more children from birth to 3 years old also weren’t included in the budget bill. But lawmakers are proposing new dollars for early learning assistance from separate gambling measures being considered by the House and Senate. The full House is scheduled to debate the budget Thursday. Combined with other budget bills, total spending across state, legislative and judicial agencies next year would top $34 billion. While they boosted spending in the general operating budget, lawmakers on the committee stripped increases that had been proposed for legislative and judicial agencies before sending those budget bills to the House floor. Legislative agencies would get a largely flat $96 million budget next year, and the Louisiana Supreme Court and the judiciary would get a standstill $173 million budget. Both the Legislature and judiciary are sitting on surpluses. ___ House Bill 105: www.legis.la.gov Follow Melinda Deslatte on Twitter at http://twitter.com/melindadeslatte
