After more than three months, Lafourche Parish School District’s superintendent remains out on medical leave, and his condition has not been released to the public. The Lafourche Parish School Board called a special meeting last Wednesday night to discuss during executive session the Superintendent Louis Voiron’s status. When the board members emerged from the closed meeting after about 40 minutes, Board President Brooke Huddleston said the discussion that took place in private was just for information. No action was taken regarding Voiron’s status. Huddleston said board members wanted an update since they last met to discuss the superintendent in private on July 31. The board initially approved his medical leave on July 19. Since that time, Huddleston said he has been using accumulated time for paid leave and also qualifies for access to three months of unpaid extended medical leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act. Huddleston said the board still doesn’t know the cause of Voiron’s medical leave. In the interim, acting Superintendent Jarod Martin, the district’s director of secondary and middle school education, continues to fill in for the role.

What a Life!

By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd

Our prayer life should include more than just saying or repeating words

I just finished reading a small but powerful book on prayer by Benediction Sister Joan Chittister entitled, “The Breath of the Soul.” I recommend it to all my readers. Often we think of prayer as saying various words to encourage God to do what we want. Sr. Joan outlines 42 different qualities we should bring to our prayer life. I want to comment on a few of them. The first one is SelfKnowledge. Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” In our busy world day, we must constantly stop and examine what is going on in our lives. Sr. Joan says, “The everything of a deep and demanding prayer life is an awareness and acceptance of the self.” When we know ourselves, we are becoming fully human and are in touch with the divine. Another chapter deals with Gratitude. The mystic Meister Eckhart once said, “If the only prayer you say in your life is ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” When we bow our heads in gratitude, we are acknowledging that all the works of God are good. We realize our dependence on our Creator who supplies us with every good gift. Patience is another quality of prayer. Coming to appreciate the difference between God’s time and our time is essential to becoming spiritual people says Sr. Joan. We want things to happen on our time when we want them. It is precisely when we experience difficulty with the discouragement in our prayer life that we become stronger. In God’s good time, God will come. Responsibility is another one of the 42 qualities. Fr. Dan Berrigan once said, “Prayer consists for most part in insisting that God do for us what we are unwilling to do for one another. Resolve: Let’s do for one another what we would have God do for us. This is known as God-like activity.” We are here to continue the work that God has begun and to work with the Creator to make this world a better place to live for all peoples. Another quality is Humility. Again Sr. Joan says, “The greatest obstacle to the spiritual life is the temptation to make ourselves our own God. It is one thing to know my own gifts and to nurture them but it is entirely another to presume that I have them all.” Humility does not mean we think less of ourselves, or put our-

selves down. It’s being who we are before God. Abandonment is another key element of prayer. Thomas Merton once said, “Pure love and prayer are learned in the hour when prayer has become impossible and your heart has turned to stone.” We often start off in the spiritual life with a wonderful feeling of the closeness of God. This is good but this is a feeling. God is still present when we don’t feel anything. When our prayer life is dry, that is when we are making true

progress in the spiritual life. Trust is another quality of prayer. Sr. Joan says, “The purpose of prayer is the process of falling into God. As the mystics say, we are beginning to learn that God alone is enough. The truth is that none of us really knows where we are going and must never take it for granted that we do. We can plan our lives but we cannot guarantee them.” We must learn to live our lives trusting that God has a plan for each one of us.

The last chapter is Attention. St. Benedict says, “Prayer should be short and pure, unless it is prolonged under the inspiration of divine grace.” Sr. Joan adds, “In prayer we melt into the presence of God within. The Silence of God becomes the central, major focus of our lives, the anchor of our hearts, the stabilizer that carries us through all the moments of life – with all the emotional upheavals that implies – on a straight and steady course directly to the heart of God.”

The $250,000 project is being paid for by the Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District and Lafourche Parish government. The parish is covering $200,000, and the fresh water district is covering $50,000. “It is really great to see this project get started. Some of these vessels have been derelict in the bayou for many years, and we are excited to play a role in finally getting them removed,” Ben Malbrough, the executive

director of the fresh water district, said in a news release. Bollinger Shipyards will provide the staging area at its Lockport facility next to the bayou for the project. Ben Bordelon, the company’s president, said Bollinger is pleased to assist with the “much-needed project.” “These derelict vessels are a danger to both commercial and recreational vessels,” said Bordelon. “Once the removal has been completed, Bayou Lafourche will not only be much safer for all types of maritime traffic, but it will enhance the natural landscape and beauty of the bayou.” The boats scheduled for removal have been decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard. While no environmental complications are expected, the news release stated that the contractor will take precautionary measures to ensure the bayou isn’t contaminated by any of the boats during the removal and are properly discarded. Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said the bayou should attract tourism and recreation. “We are hopeful that this project will increase activities like canoeing, kayaking, fishing and touring,” he said. Work is expected to begin in mid-November and take about one month to complete. — Daily Comet Staff Writer Halle Parker can be reached at hparker@houmatoday.comor 857-2204. Louisiana holding free flu shot events around the state

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s health department is holding oneday flu vaccination clinics around the state where people can get free flu shots. The free flu shot events began in October and are continuing this month. Events are open to the public, without appointments needed. The free flu shots will be available locally in Thibodaux at the Warren J. Harang Jr. Municipal Auditorium, 310 North Canal Blvd., on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 3 to 7 p.m. Those who don’t have private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid to cover the cost of the flu shot won’t have to pay for the vaccination. The Department of Health says more than 1,400 people in Louisiana died last year from the flu and more than 14,000 people were hospitalized. The agency is encouraging people to get their annual vaccination against the flu, saying a shot is recommended for anyone over 6 months old who doesn’t have a complicating condition. ___

Louisiana volunteer rescue crew ‘Cajun Navy’ changes name

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A volunteer search and

rescue group in Louisiana says it has changed its name to avoid confusion with a similarly named organization whose leader is accused of taking money from a fundraiser meant for children. The director of Pinnacle Search and Rescue, formerly known as Cajun Navy 2016, told KADN-TV it sped up its name change when the president of a separate group called America’s Cajun Navy was charged with fraud two weeks ago. News outlets report the change also comes as its own president, Jon Bridgers, faces fraud charges after a homeowner said he agreed to do contracting work on a house but never finished. Pinnacle Search and Rescue director Ben Husser said some were confusing the two organizations. Both groups include private boat owners who assist rescue operations. ___

Report: Louisiana tuition increases led the nation

THE CENTER SQUARE A new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says tuition at four-year public universities in Louisiana increased by 107 percent, or $4,810 per student, from 2008 to 2018, the biggest collective increase by percentage in the nation during that time span and the second-biggest by dollar amount behind Arizona. State funding per fulltime student fell 38 percent during that time, or $4,454 per student, the

second-greatest decrease by percentage behind Arizona, the report says. Cuts to higher education have worsened racial and class inequality, since rising tuition can deter low-income students and students of color from college, says the Louisiana Budget Project, which focuses on how state policy affects low- and moderateincome residents. ___

Still near bottom, but some progress for Louisiana schools

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A national education assessment released Wednesday shows math scores for Louisiana’s eighth graders went up five points over the past two years — the best rate of improvement in the nation. The Nation’s Report Card shows Louisiana still near the bottom in math and reading scores for fourth and eighth graders. And the percentage of students judged at least proficient was below 30% at each level: 29% for fourth grade math, 26% for fourth grade reading, 23% for eighth grade math and 27% for eighth grade reading. Still, the state’s education superintendent, John White, pointed to the nation-leading improvement rate for eighth-grade math as a sign of progress. The state education department also released figures showing Louisiana ranking high among states in improving proficiency for math and reading in grades four and eight.

play after the Ellender score, quarterback Patrick Gisclair rode his blockers through the line, then broke free into the open field for a 74yard touchdown run that put South Lafourche up 14-7. The Patriots self-destructed on their next drive, stalling out, then snapping a punt past their punter and out of the back of their own end zone for a safety which put the Tarpons up 16-7. With the next possession, Gisclair struck again, hitting Eric Thibodaux on a touchdown pass to put the Tarpons up 23-7 at the end of the first quarter. Then the defense got rolling. Ellender started to stop the Tarpons’ momentum in the middle phases of the game, even taking the ball into South Lafourche territory several times. But for every threat, South Lafourche had an answer, which sent the game to halftime with the same 23-7 score, an advantage which also held through the end of the third quarter. “We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot, Patriots coach David McCormick said. “Unfortunately this year, we’ve been good at that. One of the things we’re most consistent at is being inconsistent. In the fourth quarter, Gisclair scored on a short touchdown to send the game to its final margin on a drive set up with several runs from Derin Doucet, who was a workhorse in the win, pushing forward for more than 100 yards. The Tarpons will now take momentum into Week 10’s battle with Assumption, a game which will be for a piece of the district title. The game also will be huge for South Lafourche’s postseason positioning. With a win, they’re 100 percent in. A loss could knock the team out of playoff con-

along the way, but once we got to the point where we’d hit our stride and start clicking, we’d make some headway. Now, we’re going into Week 10 with a chance to accomplish one of our biggest goals, to win a district championship. On Friday, the Tarpons did good things in all three phases to secure the victory. South Lafourche struck first, forcing a Patriots’ punt, then pushing the ball into the end zone on a touchdown run from Braxton Pitre to go up 7-0. The Patriots answered South Lafourche’s score with the O’Ryan James show. James took the kickoff to midfield, then caught a 36-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7 midway through the opening quarter. Ellender wouldn’t be heard from again on the scoreboard. A month ago, South Lafourche was winless and desperately searching for offensive answers. But on Friday night, they’ll be playing for a district championship. The Tarpons’ recent roll continued on Friday in a 30-7 win over Ellender, the team’s thirdstraight win of the season after an 0-6 start. With the victory, the Tarpons are now 3-1 in district play. They will take on Assumption Friday night and, if successful, they’ll earn a piece of the district title, a feat that not many thought was possible just 28 days ago. “We’ve come a long way, but it was expected, South Lafourche football coach Blake Forsythe said. “We knew we were young and that we had a really difficult schedule. Central Lafourche’s defense held on as long as it could on Friday night against Destrehan. But in the second half, they just couldn’t hold on any longer and the Wildcats pushed past the Trojans and sent the team to a hardfought loss. Destrehan beat Central Lafourche 3815, thanks to a secondhalf onslaught that put the Trojans behind the scoreboard and unable to threaten victory. Coach Keith Menard said he thought his team fought for a half, especially defensively. But in the second half, the team just couldn’t fight any longer against a Wildcats team that has elite-level athletes. “I thought our defense played great for the first half. They did what they could, Menard said. “We couldn’t score enough or stay on the field long enough offensively to help them out. Those guys have an Alabama commitment at running back and college players all over their offense. If you keep giving them chances, they’ll score. We gave them too many chances. The Trojans led early. Destrehan scored first on a touchdown pass to Quincy Brown to go up 7-0, but then the Trojans struck back with a touchdown grab from Logan Wilcox, then a 2-point conversion to Jansen Folse to go up 87 at the end of the first quarter. But the Wildcats dominated the rest of the game after tasting their own blood. Alabama commitment Kyle Edwards

Two more scores made it 388 Destrehan. “We struggled to move the football, Menard said. “We have to execute better than that to limit their oppor-

tunities. Late in the game, the Trojans punched on in with a touchdown from Deon Jenkins to send the game to its final margin. The Trojans are now 5-4 on the season. They’re comfortably in the playoffs, but a win on Friday against Terrebonne will mean valuable seeding for the team.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Nicholls State University sophomore Julien Gums rushed for a career-high 178 yards and his second touchdown put Nicholls ahead in the final minutes as the No. 24/25 Colonels hung on for a 27-23 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday evening at Benson Stadium. Gums was the workhorse for the Colonels on the gamewinning drive, accounting for 68 of the 74 yards. His 1-yard touchdown run with 3:27 on the clock erased the UIW (5-4, 4-3 SLC) lead which it had just taken four minutes earlier. On the final defensive stand, the Cardinals moved the ball all the way to the Colonel 26 with less than a minute to go before Sully Laiche recorded a sack to keep the clock running. Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. With the two senior running backs - Dontrell Taylor and Kendall Bussey - sidelined with injuries, Gums stepped up to carry the ball a career-high 23 times. His longest rushes of the evening came on the final drive when he started it off with 31and 28-yarders. Gums’ other touchdown tied the game at 6-6 in the first quarter after the Colonel defense held UIW twice in the red zone to short field goals. UIW’s Jon Copeland threw for 381 yards on 55 passes and had a 1yard touchdown to Ameer King for a 13-6 lead in the second quarter. But a minute later, K.J. Franklin was the recipient of a 32yard touchdown pass which tied the game at

13-13. Franklin led Nicholls with 81 yards on three receptions, highlighted by his first career TD. Chase Fourcade threw for 150 yards and a touchdown, but the play of his day was a careerlong 64-yard touchdown before the break. On third-and-nine, Fourcade scrambled up the middle and outran the Cardinal defenders for a 20-16 advantage. In the third quarter, the Nicholls defense stopped two fourthdown tries as neither team scored in the period. On a fourth-andgoal from the 1, Keyondrick Philo was stopped in his tracks up the middle by Laiche for a turnover-on-downs. For the next UIW possession, the Cardinals went for it again on a fourth-and-four from the Colonel 28, and Elijah Reames batted the pass down at the line of scrimmage.

Leading 20-16 still in the fourth, Nicholls put together a 9-play drive to reach inside the Cardinal 30, but Jeremy Roundscoughed up the ball for the Colonels’ second lost fumble of the night. UIW answered with Kevin Brown’s 1-yard TD rush with 7:49 remaining. Along with Laiche, the defense was led by Khristian Mims with a career-high 13 tackles and Laryon James finished with 12. Laiche was one of three Colonels with a sack, joining Reames and Aquindas Steib. Nicholls is back in Thibodaux for the next two weeks with its final home games of the regular season. The Colonels will host Houston Baptist at 3 p.m. on Nov. 9 for their Hall of Fame Game. The matchup will be broadcast on Cox Sports TV and ESPN+.

Law enforcement participating in No Shave November

Several area law enforcement agencies are working together to participate in No Shave November, a national effort to raise awareness and funding for the fight against cancer in the month of November. Deputies and officers who donate $25 will be allowed to grow a beard during the month of November. Typically, per policy, many agencies prohibit facial hair other than a mustache. These policies will be suspended for the month of November for those who donate money at each agency. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office spearheaded the project and challenged several other agencies that were up for the challenge. Other agencies participating include the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Thibodaux Police Department, Lockport Police Department, Golden Meadow Police Department, Port Fourchon Harbor Police, Gonzales Police Department, and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Get your flu shot … Four tips for flu season By Greg Frank, Ph.D.

You know the signs. The thunderous cough. The pounding headache. The full-body fatigue. It’s the flu. Last fall and winter, influenza sickened roughly 40 million Americans and killed 60,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year’s flu season is nearly upon us. Here are four tips to stay healthy. 1. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. People should get the flu vaccine early. Every year, this shot prevents up to 6.7 million flu cases, 87,000 hospitalizations, and 10,000 deaths. The vaccine also helps makes the flu less severe for those who do catch it. The CDC recommends obtaining a flu shot as soon as possible. The treatment takes around two weeks to become fully effective, so there’s no time to waste. 2. Your mom was right: If you do fall ill, remember your mother’s advice. Drink lots of fluids. Juice, Gatorade, herbal teas, and chicken soup can help fight dehydration. Menthol ointments and humidifiers break up mucus and make it easier to breathe. These treatments aren’t fancy, but they provide real relief. 3. Remember that antibiotics won’t help. Influenza is caused by a virus. Antibiotics, which only treat bacterial infections, are completely useless against viruses. 4. Antibiotics come with risks. Antibiotic overuse accelerates the spread of drug-resistant bacteria known as “superbugs,” which already kill over 160,000 Americans every year. So remember — get your shots early, follow your mother’s advice, and don’t jeopardize your health by needlessly taking antibiotics. Greg Frank, Ph.D., is the director of infectious disease policy at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization.

All money collected will be donated to the American Cancer Society at the end of the month. The American Cancer Society funds and conducts research, shares expert information, supports patients, and spreads the word about prevention. For more information on the American Cancer Society, visit their website: www.cancer.org. Sheriff Craig Webre stated: “Our local law enforcement officers may look a little ‘different’ in November, but it’s for a great cause. Each of us has been directly affected or knows someone who’s been affected by cancer – and our law enforcement family is no exception. By growing our beards, we are embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose during treatment.” The public is welcomed to join in our efforts to participate to

raise money for this great cause. Checks can be made out to the American Cancer Society and dropped off at any Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office location.

Lafourche Heritage Days celebrated in November

Each year, citizens of Lafourche Parish can spend the first two weeks in November officially commemorating their history, culture, and heritage. “Lafourche Heritage Days was conceived by the Center for Bayou Studies at Nicholls State University to help Lafourche Parish citizens commemorate the origins their diverse heritage and to advocate for the preservation of that heritage in the face of coastal land loss.  It was made official by proclamation of the Lafourche Parish Council on February 27, 2018.  Dates for Lafourche Heritage Days, November 1st through 14th, were selected to commemorate the date of first mass settlement in the parish, which corresponds to the arrival of Acadian refugees in 1785 within the borders of what was to become Lafourche Parish.  That settlement and their culture still pervades Lafourche Parish 234 years later.  Hopefully, people will celebrate Lafourche Heritage Days in appropriately diverse ways each year in the future, and hopefully other parishes of the Lafourche Basin will join the annual commemoration. A number of events will be held during Lafourche Heritage Days. Saturday, Nov. 9 in Galliano: Day-long activities of “Lafourche Heritage Day at the South Lafourche Public Library from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including: - 10 to 11 a.m.: Roland Cheramie & Friends, “Cajun Music “Petting Zoo. - 11 to 12 noon: Chef Randy Cheramie, of the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls. Maryann Matherne Verret will perform a French Version of the song “Oh, Where Are You Going, My Dear Husband? Betty Lou Savoie joins in for a trio rendition of the famous Andrew Sister’s hit, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. - Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Youth Painting Ba-You (limited seating).
