Local schools earn top rankings on state Honor Roll By Julia Arenstam Daily Comet Staff Writer

Several local elementary schools have ranked among the top 90 in the state, according to the Louisiana Department of Education’sHonor Roll released last week. Schools across the state were ranked on their childhood education programs as a result of their performances during the 2017-18 school year. Performance ratings are based on classroom observations between teachers and students. “Louisiana took a great step forward when it began publicly reporting the performance of early childhood centers alongside their counterparts in K-12 systems,” State Superintendent of Education John White said in a news release. “The Honor Roll released today compliments that effort by recognizing and rewarding the sites that achieved remarkable success this past year. We applaud these sites for providing families, See Schools Page 3-A

Construction is progressing on the LA 1 Improvement Project’s Segment E in Leeville. Construction of Phase 2 – eight miles of elevated highway between Golden Meadow and the new Tomey Doucet Overpass in Leeville – is divided into Segments A, B, C, D and E. Segment E, at a cost of over $13 million, will widen the existing bridge at a 90-degree curve in Leeville for 1750 feet and extend it northward by 390 feet. The widening of the intersection will accommodate a tie-in for the future elevated highway coming from Golden Meadow. The Segment is scheduled to be complete in early 2020.

A new partnership is providing residents of south Lafourche Parish with opportunities to continue their education. Fletcher Technical Community College and South Lafourche High School announced the partnership to offer adult education courses at the school’s campus in Cut Off. “We wanted to provide more opportunities in a space where the community is familiar with it,” Fletcher Chancellor Kristine Strickland said. Fletcher announced the new program last week in a joint ceremony with school officials and state Rep. Truck Gisclair, D-Larose, who helped facilitate the new partnership. To start, the school will host adult education courses for those looking to take the HiSET, or High School Equivalency Test that was formerly called the GED, three days a week. Classes will be held from 5-8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Fletcher soon hopes to grow its program in the south end of the parish by offering college-level courses for degree programs or certifications, Strickland said. “That way people don’t have to drive all the way up to Schriever or Houma to get an education,” she said. Fletcher recently took over the old South Central Louisiana Technical College campus in south Lafourche. But due to the age of the facility and a lack of participation from the community, Strickland said, Fletcher hopes

Japanese to build $70M vegetable oil plant in Louisiana

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — A Japanese company has broken ground for a $70 million vegetable oil plant in the New Orleans area. A news release from the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission on Friday says Fuji Vegetable Oil Inc. plans to process palm oil, palm kernel oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil at the plant. The complex will also include storage and distribution facilities. The project is expected to create 39 jobs with an average annual salary of $77,000. Fuji expects to begin hiring in late 2019, and the plant is expected to be complete in June 2020. Fuji Vegetable Oil Inc. is the U.S. arm of Fuji Oil Holdings Inc. of Osaka, Japan. LSU-Alabama on CBS draws best TV rating of college season

CBS says LSU-Alabama in prime time Saturday drew the best overnight television rating for any college football game this season. The top-ranked Alabama’s 29-0 victory against the Tigers, who came into the game ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25, earned a 6.7 rating. That was up 81 percent from last season’s 3.7 rating in prime time. CBS says the game peaked with an 8.0 rating between 9-9:30 p.m. Eastern. The previous highest rated game this season was Ohio State at Penn State on Sept. 29, which drew a 5.3 rating on ABC. Georgia at Kentucky, the first half of CBS’ SEC doubleheader, drew a 2.8 rating.

Python presents slithery situation at Texas Goodwill store

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A Goodwill worker collecting clothes and other items at a Texas sorting center was surprised to find an albino python clinging to the side of a bin. The python was huddled in a pile of clothes when the worker discovered it Thursday at the center in Fort Worth. Manager James Murphy says it’s not clear if the snake slithered away from its owner and was accidentally dropped off or if its donation was intentional. The python had a serpentine journey: It arrived at one of nearly 40 Goodwill donation drop-offs in the area before being transported to the Fort Worth sorting center. Goodwill staffers will care for the python until the owner claims it or a permanent home is found.

moving the classes to the high school will be more appealing to potential students. “Where we are in education is that it is really going to take partnerships to be able to move and impact communities,” she said. As the industry demands change for workforce education, Fletcher has seen an increasing need for residents to continue their education to enter or re-enter the workforce. “For many years, if you didn’t have high school diploma, or if you just had one, you could often find work in good job where it could sustain a family,” Strickland said. “Now we’re seeing a shift. A lot of it has to do with technology and a higher skill level being required to enter into the workforce.” As new generations enter the workforce, it’s clear they are going to need at least some postsecondary education, whether that is an associate’s degree or a certification, Strickland said. New training and education could also help residents combat the ebbs and flows the local economy has seen and allow work to pivot during economic downturns, she said. “We’ve begun an opportunity where we begin to see high schools and higher education align and then on top of that aligning with business and industry,” Strickland said. done throughout Louisiana. We are caring for our earliest learners in safe, emotionally supportive and educational environments, and because of that, our entire educational spectrum will benefit,” said Tony Davis, state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member. “Our state is being well served by its investment in early childhood education, and I hope we can continue to raise funding to expand these kinds of gains.” Area schools that received the top gains designation are South Larose Elementary School and the Church Street 1 & 2 Head Start. Local birth to three achievers are Little Angels Developmental Center and Mrs. Tuts Circle Of Learning Developmental Center in Lafourche Parish. The Honor Roll for 2017-18 includes 90 in the excellence category, 153 in the birth to three category and 56 in the top gains category. in key spots throughout the season and sometimes our youth just showed up for us,” Forsythe said. “Friday, we made mistakes in special teams early that put us behind the 8-ball

and we had errors in the other phases later in the game to keep us out of reach. It’s been some of the same things we’ve seen all season.” Forsythe said he and his coaching staff will

work hard this offseason to correct the mistakes, adding that the team will work hard in the weight room and in spring practices before getting back into the grind in 2019. Forsythe said he

from Sully Laiche and two by Patrick Riley. Khristian Mims paced the team with eight tackles, and Allen Pittman had six stops and a sack. The Huskies had just 13 first downs and were 5 of 15 on third. In the first quarter, Nicholls started the game with a recordbreaking field goal by Lorran Fonseca. After a penalty pushed his try back five yards, the senior etched his name in the record book with a 56-yarder for a 3-0 lead. The previous mark of 55 yards was set by Kyle Leisher at Tad Gormley Stadium in 1999. Bussey closed out the scoring in the period with a 4-yard touchdown run. The Colonels then had a 66-yard scoring drive in the second, capped on a 13-yard catch and run by Taylor. Fonseca added a 35-yard field goal later in the quarter for a 20-0 lead. HBU answered with its best drive in the first half, reaching the Colonel 30. But two penalties pushed the Huskies back and Nicholls ended the possession with sacks by Laiche and Riley. Nicholls got the ball back with 1:39 on the clock and flawlessly executed the two-minute drill, marching 78 yards on 10 plays to set up a jump ball in the corner of the end zone to Dixon (5 rec., 74 yards) for a 2yard touchdown. In the third, Gabe Fuselier started the drive with receptions of 14 and 15 yards, while Taylor rushed for 26 to put Nicholls inside the red zone. Four plays later,

Fourcade scrambled and scored from 6 yards out for a 34-0 advantage. HBU scored its first touchdown on a 67-yard catch by Terry Tillmon in the third. The Huskies forced and recovered a pair of fumbles in the third, including one to start their drive at the Colonel 27. But Nicholls had two more sacks to knock them out of field goal range. Before the end of the third, the Red and Gray scored on a 90-yard drive with Fourcade sneaking in from a yard out. It was set up on a 20-yard catch to the 1 by Dixon, and a 37-yard pass earlier to Damion Jeanpiere Jr. (7 rec., 96 yards). Jeanpiere surpassed the 2,000 receiving yards plateau for his career, becoming just the fourth Colonel to do so. Nicholls now moves into a three-way tie with the McNeese Cowboys and UIW. Nicholls returns home for its final two games of the regular season, starting Saturday, Nov. 10 against Stephen F. Austin. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. For tickets, call 985-448-4790 or visit NichollsTickets.com

Trojans roar to playoffs, while Tarpons bow out No. 20 Colonels roll in 41-20 win at HBU with lopsided defeat Gazette Sports Report

After a couple of tough losses in the second-half of the season, winning a football game sure felt good to the Central Lafourche football team. To do it against a longtime rival, well, that just made it all the sweeter. The Trojans beat Thibodaux 49-28 on Friday night, ending the team’s season with a 6-4 record, easily punching a ticket into the Class 5A State Playoffs. Coach Keith Menard said the win was good for his team, giving a jolt of life into the club after a couple late-season losses. “That was good for us to get that surge of momentum as we move forward and get to the playoffs,” Menard said. “The kids have been working hard and they’ve kept the right attitude and mindset. To get a victory over our rivals, that was a good source of motivation for our kids. We had a lot of very happy young men in our locker room after the win.” The game was won on the legs of powerful tailback Deon Jenkins with the help from the Trojans’ offensive line. Jenkins rushed 38 times for 316 yards and six touchdowns in the win, helping the Trojans overcome a fast start from Thibodaux, which needed to win in order to make the Class 5A State Playoffs. The teams were tied at 14 at halftime when the pendulum swung in favor of Central in a dominating second-half performance. The Trojans recovered an onside kick try by Thibodaux to start the half, which set up a short touchdown run from Jenkins to go up 21-14 early in the quarter. Thibodaux tied the game at 21-all when quarterback Tyren Young hit Cullen Nazio on a pass to even the score early in the quarter, but Jenkins came back with his fourth touchdown of the game late in the third quarter to put Central Lafourche up 28-21, a score which held until the final period. In that quarter, the Trojans finally separated. Jenkins added another score with 8:53 to play to go up 35-21. Thibodaux answered that touchdown by returning the ensuing kickoff for a score to cut the lead to 35-28, but the Trojans never faltered again, getting another touchdown from Jenkins to go up 42-28 with 4 minutes left. After a defensive stop, Central put ice on its catch, punching in a late-game touchdown on a 16-yard score from Aaron Delaune to send the game to its final margin. With the win, Central Lafourche earned

the No. 21 seed in Class 5A. They will take on No. 12 Slidell on Friday night on the Northshore. Menard said the team’s focus will be on improving all week and getting ready to play its biggest game of the season in a win or go home situation. “We have to show back up to work and get ready to play a really good opponent,” Menard said. “It’s a challenge, but we look forward to it. Our kids are ready to approach it head-on.” ___ Tarpons fall at East St. John

South Lafourche has been inconsistent all season, having untimely mistakes in all three phases at inopportune times throughout the season. The Tarpons’ regular season finale was no different, as big plays loomed large in a 50-0 shut out against East St. John. The Tarpons had mistakes in special teams early in the game. Several miscues in the punting game for South Lafourche led to short points and an early lead for a Wildcats team that also returned a kickoff for a score in the game. The Tarpons also had defensive lapses, allowing both rushing and passing yardage to the Wildcats. And offensively, South Lafourche just never could sustain itself, struggling with the size, speed and quickness of the Wildcats’ defense. The Tarpons end their regular season with a 2-8 record. Coach Blake Forsythe said he knows that record isn’t good enough to appease fans, but added that he’s working to build a program able to sustain long-term success and this is year two in the process. “We had young guys

HOUSTON - A dominating all-around performance by the No. 20 Nicholls State University football team led to its second convincing win in a row as the Colonels defeated Houston Baptist University, 41-20, Saturday afternoon in Husky Stadium. Coming off a 27point victory over Incarnate Word, Nicholls (6-3, 5-2 SLC) used another fast start to lead 27-0 at halftime and 41-7 in the third after Chase Fourcade’s touchdown pass to Dai’Jean Dixon. With the game in hand, HBU scored on a blocked punt and a rushing touchdown to make the final. Nicholls finished with a season-high 616 yards of offense, with 313 rushing and 303 in the air. Fourcade was nearly flawless in his passing once again, completing 24 of 30 for 279 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for two scores, with running back Kendall Bussey (64 yards) adding another. D o n t r e l l Taylor sparked the ground game with his second-straight 100yard effort, going for 104 on nine carries. For the season, Taylor is averaging 8.3 yards per carry and leads the team with 582 yards. Freshman Julien Gums added 42 yards, and backup quarterback Charles Brooks rushed for 40. The Colonel defense held HBU to 237 yards and minus 21 yards rushing. Nicholls had a season-high seven sacks, led by three

also wanted to thank his senior class for their dedication to the Tarpons football program, adding that he wishes their final year with the team could have been more prosperous.

Lady Tarpons punch ticket to Pontchartrain Center Gazette Sports Reports

They did it again! For the secondstraight season, the South Lafourche High School volleyball team is going to the LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament in Kenner. The Lady Tarpons punched their ticket to the State Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon in a thrilling four-set win over Lakeshore. South Lafourche lost the first set 23-25, but then rallied back to score threestraight (25-21, 25-14, 25-22) to secure the match. It’s the second time in school history that South Lafourche makes it to the Pontchartrain Center. The Lady Tarpons will try and continue their ride to the State Championship alive on Thursday against Ben Franklin at 4:20 p.m. Coach Jamie Cantrelle said having been to Kenner before will be beneficial to the Lady Tarpons who now know what to expect and have all of the first-time jitters gone. “We definitely are,” Cantrelle said when asked if the team was more ready to compete at the top level. “I think playing at the Vandebilt Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center kind of gave us a feel for what it’s going to be like over there. Of course, the atmosphere is going to be really crazy. We know what it’s like there. We know what the atmosphere is like. I think this time, we’re going in and we’re ready and we’re focused and ready to play.” Saturday’s match was a heavyweight fight. Lakeshore came to play, but the Lady Tarpons were just a little bit better at the end of the day. In the first set, Lakeshore jumped ahead early on the powerful right arm of outside hitter Sarah Tucker, who was dominant throughout the match for the Lady Titans. But South Lafourche tinkered with its alignments and made a few small adjustments in the rest of the match, which allowed for the four-set win. In the second set,

South Lafourche High School girls’ volleyball team members focus on the task before them, making it to the State Quarterfinals on Saturday. It will be the second time in school history that the team makes it to the Pontchartrain Center for the event. the teams fought blowfor-blow with Lakeshore drawing within 1 point in the middle of the set, trailing 15-14. But South Lafourche used powerful offense from seniors Taylor Toups, Abigail Bouzigard, Marcelle Pitre and underclassmen Claire Chiasson and Ava Pitre to secure the set. South Lafourche setter Sierra Lerille was also huge throughout the match with pinpoint ball placement to allow the outside hitters to roam at the net. In the third set, it was South Lafourche’s defense that took control. Lakeshore made the first run, taking a 9-6 lead. But with Tucker playing best, South her Lafourche stiffened with excellent back-line play from Jacie LeBoeuf, Bailey Melancon and Alissa Cosse, which enabled the team to score an easy third-set win and their first lead of the match. The Lady Tarpons ended the set winning 19 of the final 24 points, which sent the jam-packed crowd into a frenzy. Cantrelle said the fans were a huge part of the match. “We have the best, most supportive fans,” she said. In the fourth, the Lady Titans refused to bow, battling South Lafourche throughout the set. Lakeshore led 12-9 midway through

the set, then 16-13. But like they did in the third set, South Lafourche stiffened defensively, securing several long rallies for points, while cleaning up some service errors that plagued the team earlier in the match. At match point and with South Lafourche up 24-22, Tucker served it into play. Toups dug it to Lerille, who set it to Chiasson. Chiasson rose above the defense, smashed it into the finger tips of a Lakeshore defender, which caused the ball to ricochet onto the floor, thus sealing the win. South Lafourche players stormed the floor after the win with players and coaches relishing the moment. But after the fact, Cantrelle said South Lafourche is heading to Kenner with a new mindset and a desire to go to the state tournament and win. But she added that she’s also happy with the way the team played in such a high-stakes game. “I’m super proud of the way they performed today,” Cantrelle said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy match. We knew we had to come out swinging. We went down that first set, but I knew the girls were focused after that. We were ready to play and we definitely performed very well after that.”
