Garza named French Food Festival Grand Marshal XL

There have been many men in the community that have held the honor of being named French Food F e s t i v a l Grand Marshal, following in the lines of this great tradition of civic minded, generous and supportive Garza contributors, we are proud to name Mr. Jose Garza as festival Grand Marshal XL. Jose is a native of Texas and long time resident of Bayou Lafourche. He moved with his family to Golden Meadow around the time he began public school, later moving to Larose where he still resides. Jose is the son of the late Jose, Sr. and Rosa Garza. He grew up with many siblings, some of which still help in his festival booth, or by baking cakes or selling tickets as part of French Food Festival’s important volunteer corps. His siblings are Paula Garza, George Garza, Xavier Garza, GG Garza, Rosa Garza, Ragin Dawson and the late Myrna Garza. Jose and Becky are the proud uncle and aunt to many nieces and nephews in their large family. He is a 1976 graduate of South Lafourche High School and has been employed since by Latelco, which is now Vision Communications. Jose has few hobbies but loves them all fiercely…they include hunting, fishing and helping in all things Larose Civic Center. Some of Jose’s many roles at the center included See Garza Page 3-A

Voters approve two constitutional amendments By BRIDGET MIRE, Daily Comet Staff Writer

Louisiana voters approved two state constitutional amendments dealing with property tax exemptions and one to dedicate money from any new gasoline tax to transportation and infrastructure. Here are the complete but unofficial results of Saturday’s elections: Amendment 1 — Passed This amendment adds property tax exemption for projects under construction. The exemption applies to commercial and residential sites. According to the nonpartisan Council for a Better Louisiana, new construction has traditionally been exempt from property taxes until

work is completed. However, the state Constitution was previously silent on the issue, the council says. Statewide: Voters cast 266,133 ballots (66 percent) in favor and 139,549 (34 percent) against. Of the state’s almost 3 million voters, 13.6 percent cast ballots on the measure. Lafourche: Parish voters passed the measure 5,920 (71 percent) to 2,449 (29 percent). About 14.3 percent of the parish’s 58,502 voters cast ballots. Amendment 2 — Passed This amendment adds a property tax exemption for surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty.

Voters on Saturday elected a new Lockport police chief and renewed a property tax to benefit the North Lafourche Levee District. They also elected a port commissioner and south Lafourche justice of the peace. For Lockport Police chief, voters elected interim chief David Harrelson Jr. Voters elected Curtis “Tompuss” Pierce, of Galliano, to the Greater Lafourche Port Commission’s Division E seat. They also elected Martin Wade, of Galliano, as justice of the peace for District 4. Here are the complete but unofficial results of Saturday’s elections: Lockport Police Chief Democrat Harrelson received 406 votes (59 percent). He defeated Democrats Ernest Boudreaux Sr., who received 203 votes (30 percent), and Chester Douglas, who received 74 votes (11 percent). Of the town’s 1,564 registered voters, 43.7 percent cast ballots. Former Chief Warren Vedros Sr. resigned in June after an indictment on eight felony charges. Harrelson will complete Vedros’ four-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2020. Greater Lafourche Port Commission Republican Pierce won with 1,237 votes (53 percent). He beat Republican Jimmy “T-Jim” Lafont, who received 1,102 votes (47 percent). Of 11,938 eligible voters, 19.6 percent cast ballots. The seat was left vacant after Wilbert Collins Sr. died in May. Pierce will complete Collins’ six-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2018. Justice of the Peace, District 4 Libertarian Wade received 1,377 votes (62 percent). He defeated Democrat Stacy Hernandez, who received 860 votes (38 percent). Of the district’s 11,938 registered voters, 18.7 percent cast ballots. See Results Page 3-A

Flight to Freedom- Domestic Violence Vigil to remember victims and honor survivors By HOLLY MCKEON Contributing Writer

Millions of household members fall prey to violence every single day, with many going unreported to authorities. Alarmingly, every minute nearly twenty people endure physical abuse by their partner, which equals out to more than ten million women and men yearly. The National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that on a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. Violence in the home affects everyone within its confines regardless if the abuser is committing acts of violence towards one person. The National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence reflects one in fifteen children exposed to violent acts. Moreover, 90 percent of those children exposed to domestic violence, saw the deviant act, as opposed to hearing it or other indirect forms of exposure. In 2016, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office answered 1,335 do-

mestic violence-related calls with 825 protective orders issued to victims of domestic violence who were seeking protection from their perpetrator. To bring awareness to domestic violence, The Pact Place will hold their fifth annual vigil, which will include the release of “butterflies for peace” on Tuesday, October 24th at the Lafourche Central Market in Raceland. Pam Guedry, PACT’s Program Director, said, “The purpose of the Butterflies of Hope, Flight to Freedom event is to honor the memory of those victims who died because of domestic violence. We will also honor victims who are surviving every day in their homes of violence, and celebrate the survivors who have left the abuse and are now living violence free.” Pam went on to explain, “The release of the butterflies is almost symbolic of the struggle survivors of domestic violence go through to break free from their cocoon of violence. It is a symbol of the transformation and hope.” See Vigil Page 3-A

US rig count declines by 8 this week to 928 HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. declined by eight this week to 928. That’s up from the 539 rigs that were active a year ago. Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes said Friday that 743 rigs sought oil and 185 explored for natural gas this week. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Alaska, Kansas, North Dakota and Pennsylvania each gained one rig. Texas lost four rigs, Oklahoma declined by three, California lost two and Louisiana and West Virginia each declined by one. Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio, Utah and Wyoming were unchanged. The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404. ——

Oil spills into Gulf of Mexico after underwater pipe bursts

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to an oil spill off the coast of Louisiana. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said in a news release Friday that oil spewed out of an underwater fractured pipe in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Venice, Louisiana. The offshore oil and gas operator, LLOG Exploration Offshore, says between 7,950 and 9,350 barrels of oil were re-

leased before the spill was halted. There were no reports of injuries. The Coast Guard said it was flying over the area Saturday and has spotted three sheens. Officials say any surface oil that appears would likely move southwest and not affect the shoreline. The Deepwater Horizon spill leaked more than 3 million barrels into the Gulf in 2010. ———

LSU starts fundraising campaign for wild tiger conservation

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana State University has launched a new fundraising campaign aimed at helping students’ efforts to save the school’s mascot — the tiger — in the wild. The campaign is tied to university participation in the U.S. Tiger University Consortium. The consortium includes LSU, Auburn University, Clemson University and the University of Missouri, all of which have tiger mascots and are working to help save wild tigers from extinction. LSU’s fundraising dollars will be used to start a fellowship program for students interested in research on tiger management and conservation, seeking to preserve tiger habitats and boost populations in the wild. LSU has a live tiger on campus named Mike, brought to the school in August from a Florida rescue facility and housed in a multimillion-dollar habitat next to Tiger Stadium.

Heaviest is best: Pumpkin sets record at California contest

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — The winner of the 44th World Championship Pumpkin WeighOff had the heaviest pumpkin recorded in the history of the San Francisco Bay Area competition. The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/2yd5T5Q ) that a forklift hoisted the giant pumpkin onto a scale and a crowd watched as it was weighed Monday in downtown Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. It registered 2,363 pounds (1,070 kilograms) to make it the seventh win for grower Joel Holland. The giant pumpkin earned the Sumner, Washington, man prize money of $7 per pound. Cindy Tobeck won the competition last year with a pumpkin weighing 1,910 pounds. Tobeck rode on top of her entry this year as it was brought to the scale, but its 2,002 pounds fell short of Holland’s entry.

One of the sponsors of the event, The Haven, is an organization whose mission is to empower survivors of family violence and sexual assault to live safe, independent, and violence-free lives. The Haven remains dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence by changing attitudes and beliefs for all people to live free from the threat of violence. The organization offers prevention and outreach services such as the Lunch and Learn series, which is open to the public. The session takes place at the First United Methodist Church in Houma on the last Friday of every month at noon and provides insight and education to the community on issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault. The Haven also offers prevention lessons to students from Pre K through college age. For example, Pre K through secondgrade school children learns through an interactive story time that “hands are not for hitting.” Sixth grade through eighth-grade students receive the lessons, which assist adolescents in developing positive social skills and build healthy relationships. Ninth through twelfth-grade students learn about dating violence, and how to develop healthy relationships and college-aged young adults learn the dynamics of do-

mestic violence and sexual assault. Topic examples include the relationship spectrum, stalking, intimate partner violence, and acquaintance rape. To learn more about age-appropriate lessons, please visit http://www.havenhelps.org/prevention. For those who may be interested in volunteering, there are many ways to do so at The Haven. Snacks are always in need for their Trauma Group and Children’s Group. Meals are also a great way to help the women and children currently staying at the shelter. Organize a drive at your place of employment, church or with family, donate clothing, or show your support at local events. Lafourche Parish President, James Cantrelle signed a proclamation naming October domestic violence awareness month. The announcement reads in part, “It is important to recognize the compassion and dedication of the individuals who provide services to victims of domestic violence and work to increase public awareness of domestic violence and is prevalent, and to eliminate it through prevention and education. Lafourche parish has a moral obligation to work to prevent violence and to address its brutal and destructive effects.” Cantrelle also dubbed October 24 as domestic violence awareness day. On this day, President Cantrelle urges all citizens to wear purple to show their support in

Tarpons roll; Trojans have a near miss versus Destrehan Gazette Sports Reports

On Friday the 13th, the South Lafourche football team made sure there wasn’t any voodoo or gri-gri’s at play in their matchup with Morgan City. The Tarpons entered the game heavily favored to beat the Tigers and they took care of business early and often on the field, scoring a dominant 48-8 win. With the victory, South Lafourche improved to 5-2 on the season and 4-0 in District 7-4A. Coach Blake Forsythe said he was proud of his team for taking care of business and leaving no doubt – getting enough of a lead for junior varsity players to play for a lot of the final two quarters. “I was proud of the kids for setting the tone early, getting the lead and not letting up,” Forsythe said. “We didn’t fall for the trap game. We didn’t take anything for granted. We played well early, did what we had to do to stay in front and we got a lot of kids some work in the second half.” The Tarpons were in attack mode throughout the game. South Lafourche got the ball first and moved easily down the field on an 11-play touchdown drive capped on a short run by Jeremy Rogers, which put the Tarpons up 6-0. On that run, senior halfback Corbin Allen eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season – the beginnings of a game where the standout had 139 yards and three

touchdowns. Allen also had a 65-yard touchdown run negated by penalty. Forsythe said Allen had plenty more to give on Friday, but the team saved him with the big lead. “We left some tread on the tires,” Forsythe said. “But I looked at him and asked him, ‘Do you want to rush for 300 yards tonight or do you want to be rested and have a shot to win a district championship?’ We both agreed that staying fresh was the right way to go.” After the early score, there was no looking back. Allen scored twostraight rushing touchdowns to put the Tarpons up 20-0 midway through the second quarter. For the rest of the half, quarterback Brock Bailleaux took some of the spotlight – first with a touchdown run to put the Tarpons up 28-0 and then with a masterful late-half two-minute drive capped with a 10yard pass to Allen as time expired to give the Tarpons a 35-0 halftime lead. On the two-minute drive, Bailleaux hit several passes to junior Jake Galjour, who had the presence of mind to get out of bounds, persevering time to set up the score. “A lot of guys pitched in and contributed,” Forsythe said. In the second half, the Tarpons’ scoring pace slowed, but the outcome never came in question. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Tarpons struck for two touchdowns in the last quarter – one from halfback Jakobe Washington to go up 41-0, then another on a 51yard scamper from backup quarterback Austin Danos which put the Tarpons ahead 48-0. Morgan City got their only points after a scary moment. Halfback Hayden Barron was slung to the ground after a run, landing awkwardly on his neck and shoulder area. Barron stayed idle on the turf for approximately 25 minutes while trainers waited for an ambulance, which took

him to Teche Regional Medical Center. Forsythe said Barron was moving both his arms and legs and was answering questions from trainers while waiting for an ambulance. Shortly after the game, Morgan City’s trainers alerted media that all Xrays were negative and Barron was diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms. “Hopefully he can get back on the field this season,” Forsythe said of the injured opponent. Right after the score, the Tigers hit a long pass, which set up their only points of the game in the final minutes. With the win, the Tarpons now push toward a huge home game with E.D. White on Friday night. Both teams are undefeated in district and with a win, South Lafourche can seal at least a piece of the district title. _______ Trojans fall in heartbreaker Central Lafourche nearly shocked the world on Friday night, but in the end, the mighty Destrehan Wildcats lived to see victory in a four-quarter battle. The Trojans led Destrehan 14-0 early in Friday night’s game, but they couldn’t hold on. Destrehan went on a 287 run after the deficit to secure a 28-21 road victory. The loss drops Central Lafourche to 3-4 on the season. Coach Keith Menard said he’s proud of the team’s effort, but he really wishes the team could have closed the deal and sealed a win. “I thought the kids played their tails off,” Menard said. “We made plays offensively and defensively, I thought we battled. But we had a few mistakes mixed in there, too. And I think when you face a team like Destrehan, it’s hard to get by with some of those things and it ended up costing us.” Mathews looked like it was upset-city for a while on Friday. The Trojans controlled a lot of the early stages of the game. The first points came on a 13-play drive capped by a run by Deon Jenkins which put Central up 70. After a stop, that lead ballooned to 14-0 when Jacob Barker hit David Robinson on a masterful 80-yard touchdown strike, which put the Trojans up two scores. But then, a couple quirky things happened. The Wildcats took the ensuing kickoff to the house, which cut the lead to 14-7 in the blink of an eye. On the very next possession, the Wildcats found lightning in a bottle again on a pick-six, which sent the game to halftime with the score tied at 14. “They got back in the game without an offensive touchdown,” Menard said. “We can’t let that happen.” In the second half, the Trojans hiccupped again, fumbling the football, which set up a C.B. Anderson touchdown reception which put the Wildcats up 21-14. Then Robinson struck again, returning the kickoff back for a touchdown, which tied the game at 21. The Wildcats got the kill shot late in the third quarter on a short run from quarterback J.R. Blood, which put them up 28-21. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. With the loss, the Trojans are now 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in league play. They’ll take on Terrebonne on Friday night.

Colonels carry momentum into bye week By Teddy Renois Daily Comet Staff Writer

Nicholls State University is carrying momentum and several bumps and bruises into its off week after defeating Abilene Christian on Saturday. Abilene Christian started fast scoring on the game’s opening drive, but the Colonels got a big play on special teams for their first score, then grabbed the lead and maintain it behind a record-setting performance from placekicker Lorran Fonseca. Fonseca made five field goals to set a school record, and to help No. 23 Nicholls take a 29-20 Southland Conference win over Abilene Christian on Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium. The win gives Nicholls its first threegame winning streak since the 2013 season as the Colonels improve to

5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Southland Conference. The Wildcats came out ready to play with a 5play 78yard drive for a 7-0 lead with 13:30 left in the first q u a r t e r, but the defense adjusted to Abilene Christian’s screen game on the next series and forced a punt near the goal line. Kevin Johnson blocked the punt and Adrian Richardson fell on it in the end zone tying the score and after Fonseca made a 27-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead with 12:49 in the second quarter, the Colonels never trailed again. “I have to give credit to coach Brian Wallace and he had a great scheme. We pick our spots, and we are not a

huge punt block team,” Nicholls coach Tim Rebowe said. “We wanted to come after it and put some pressure and force a bad kick. We got the block and we got the touchdown. (Special teams) had a big impact. We can look at the field goals obviously, but the kickoffs were in the end zone. The kickoff and punt coverage was good and we even had a big kickoff return. I thought we had some good field position and the special teams were solid.” The field position helped Nicholls take a 20-10 lead at halftime as the Colonels got a 43yard field goal from Fonseca and a 2-yard touchdown run from Dontrell Taylor (20 carries, 130 yards, 1 TD) with 26 seconds left in the second quarter.
