Three men charged with Israeli national extradited cocaine inside PlayStation to Australia to face court
Publish date: Monday, 1 November 2021, Publish time: 12:17pm
TL Bureau, Gold Coast
Three men will appear in Southport Magistrates Court this week for allegedly importing 1.5 kg of cocaine, which was bound for the Gold Coast. Australian Federal Police, Queensland Police, Australian Border Force and NSW Police investigators from Taskforce Sentry charged the men in October when cocaine was allegedly found concealed inside a PlayStation 5 console. A 48-year-old Tweed Heads South man and a 32-year-old Palm Beach man have been charged with attempting to possess a marketable quantity of border controlled drugs, namely cocaine. They are both due to Southport Magistrates Court today (November 1, 2021). A 35-year-old Burleigh Heads man was also charged with attempting to possess a marketable quantity of border controlled drugs, namely cocaine and is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on November 4. If found guilty, the three men face 25 years’ imprisonment. The cocaine had an estimated street value of $346,500, more than six
times the median Australian annual wage. The men were charged after a suspicious consignment sent from Portugal to Sydney was identified. On examination of the package by officers from Australian Border Force (ABF) a white powder, which tested as cocaine, was found concealed within a PlayStation 5 console. The consignment was destined for an address in Tweed Heads in northern New South Wales. Investigators replaced the delivery with a replica consignment, which was allegedly collected by a 48-year-old man. AFP, QPS and ABF, with support from NSW Police, arrested three men on October 12 and later conducted search warrants at addresses in Burleigh Heads and Tugun. AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Ben Moses said the operation showed how Taskforce Sentry brought together Commonwealth agencies with
state police to dismantle criminal networks. “Our goal is to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs from overseas and onto Australian streets,” Detective Acting Superintendent Moses said. “Illicit drugs continue to enrich organised crime, enabling them to buy more guns, fuelling more violence and making our communities less safe.” ABF Acting Commander Amanda Coppleman said that this case illustrated how the ABF’s border detection capabilities are playing a significant role in Taskforce Sentry activity. “Border detections by our officers are generating hundreds of referrals to the taskforce. These detection referrals have included narcotic detections comprising cocaine, MDMA, GHB and heroin,” Acting Commander Coppleman said. Taskforce Sentry comprises of members of the AFP, the Queensland Police Service’s Crime and Intelligence Command, ABF and the Department of Home Affairs, collaborating to gather intelligence, implement investigative strategies and take action against syndicates smuggling and distributing illicit items including through postal and cargo streams.

Publish date: Monday, 1 November 2021, Publish time: 7:45aBriabane A 50-year-old Israeli national accused of being involved in a conspiracy to import 200 kilograms of cocaine into Australia will face Brisbane Magistrate’s Court this month (November 2021) after being extradited from the Philippines. Australian Federal Police officers, with assistance from Philippine authorities, including the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation in the Philippines, extradited the man from Manila to Brisbane on 24 October 2021 as part of Operation PIRUM. The man – who is alleged to be part of an Israeli Organised Crime syndicate – is now completing mandatory quarantine before facing court in Brisbane next week (9 November 2021), where an application will be made to extradite him to Sydney to stand trial. He will face charges including conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, conspiracy to traffic a commercial quantity of a controlled drug and conspiracy to deal in the proceeds of crime exceeding $1,000,000.
If found guilty, the maximum penalty for these offences can include life imprisonment. Police will allege the man was part of a syndicate that imported border controlled drugs into Australia, including a conspiracy to import a 200 kilogram shipment of cocaine in 2010. In November 2010, the AFP executed more than 20 search warrants in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria as part of Op PIRUM, an extensive investigation into alleged drug trafficking by the syndicate. Two men were arrested for their roles in the alleged importation of the cocaine. In July 2016, a 56-year-old man was sentenced in the Sydney Supreme Court to eight years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of four years and six months, for his involvement with the importation. In September 2017, a 69-year-old man was sentenced to seven years and two months’ imprisonment, with a nonparole period of three years and six months, for his involvement in the same importation by the syndicate. An arrest warrant was issued by Australian authorities for the Israeli national in October 2013, who was based overseas when he was allegedly involved in the importation.
New AFP-led Taskforce Vanguard makes significant impact to high volume crime This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force and AUSTRAC
TL Bureau, Brisbane
The new Australian Federal Policeled High Volume Crime Taskforce Vanguard has made a significant impact on the community, with the arrest of 30 people for drug and money laundering offences, and the seizure of millions of dollars in cash and hundreds of kilograms of illicit drugs and tobacco. TL BureauSydney The AFP-led Taskforce Vanguard was fully established on 1 July 2021, with about 30 investigators operating across four teams in NSW targeting drug crimes and money laundering activities. It was purpose-built to combat the increasing trend of organised crime syndicates adapting their methods of importing illicit drugs into Australia since the COVID-19 pandemic, and turning to a high volume of lightweight packages through air cargo and parcel post systems.
Australian Border Force detects and seizes hundreds of small-scale drug importations in international mail and air cargo shipments each week. This year alone, ABF has seized more than 11 tonnes of drugs entering Australia through air cargo and parcel post systems, with NSW processing approximately 85% of Australia’s incoming mail. Since its inception, the taskforce has resulted in more than 50 search warrants, 30 arrests, the seizure of more than $3.5 million in cash and seizure of hundreds of kilograms of illicit drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. Investigations have involved the seizure of illicit drugs hidden in a range of items, including handbags, whey protein, exhaust pipes, a baby rocking chair, water filtration units and mailing tubes said to contain blueprints.
Investigators have identified links in a number of investigations between organised crime groups importing illicit drugs and subsequent money laundering activities to move the proceeds of the drug activities offshore. Taskforce investigations have seen money alleged to be the proceeds of crime being moved to Dubai, Vietnam and China, with links to Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMCG) allegedly identified during one operation. AFP officers have not ruled out links to OMCGs in other investigations. The AFP-led Taskforce Vanguard brings together innovative officers with a keen ability to think outside the box to develop investigative strategies that bring police to the forefront of tackling the ever changing global criminal environment. The dedicated investigators who make up the taskforce are developing
new methods of evidence-gathering and targeting people of interest and criminal organisations. This has been possible through a network of strong agency partnerships. The AFP has brought the skills and resources of Australian Border Force and AUSTRAC members into the taskforce, complemented by strong collaboration and intelligence sharing with the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Australian Taxation Office, Department of Home Affairs, and US Homeland Security Investigations. Taskforce Vanguard officers operate closely with their offshore law enforcement counterparts to share intelligence and help investigate the activities of transnational serious organised crime syndicates, through the AFP International Network and its Liaison Officers based in posts around the world. Behind this taskforce is a global
effort with support and intelligence shared by the AFP’s international partners, connected through the AFP’s International Network. Agencies are supporting this taskforce by sharing intelligence, capabilities and resources. The Taskforce is enabling a number of AFP projects, including Operation AVARUS, the AFP’s national strategy to combat Money Laundering and actioning intelligence derived through Operation Ironside. AFP Detective Superintendent Craig Bellis said illicit drug importations and the movement of money go hand in hand, and the taskforce is going after both. “The AFP-led Taskforce Vanguard has been purpose built to actively target organised crime networks that are exploiting mail systems, and to actively pursue money laundering organisations that are enabling this crime,” Det. Supt. Bellis said.

internet development in Lithuania
TL Bureau, Vilnius Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis approved a development plan for high speed broadband internet connection intended to accelerate country-wide expansion of electronic communications infrastructure. The plan provides for at least 100 Mbps internet speed access across the country, including households and institutions in major cities and in remote areas in 2021–2027. “Our goal is to achieve broadband connectivity and 100 Mbps download speed in all households of Lithuania. This will allow operating mechanisms, streaming high definition video information and enabling virtual reality (for teaching, telemedicine and other purposes). It will also open up possibilities to provide new services, reduce regional exclusion and promote the creation of high added value jobs,” the Minister said. It is planned to allocate EUR 75 million for the development of ultrafast internet connectivity. These funds are to be used for building transmission towers and fibre loop. While planning investment into
high-speed internet development, it is necessary to ensure that main public and economic activity spaces and public institutions are connected to the broadband network. Ultrafast data flow rates would highly benefit public institutions, such as schools, hospitals and others. High-capacity network infrastructure is expected to attract more market participants’ investment and, at the same time, to allow new market entry, promote competition in the broadband market and usage of broadband services. Before drafting the plan for broadband internet development, the experts conducted an in-depth analysis. It showed that around 32 percent (or 429 546) of Lithuanian households have no access to fixed broadband internet with at least 100 Mbps data rates. The plan prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Communications sets up measures to be implemented by Lithuanian public authorities within the financing period of 2021–2027 EU structural assistance with the view to achieve ultra-fast broadband internet development targets provided for in Lithuanian and EU strategic documents.
