Antony J. In addition to what we have provided, more than 30 countries have joined us to deliver security assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began. Together, we are working
around the clock to deliver security assistance every day, and we are expediting shipments of even more of the arms and defense equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself. We remain in close contact with Ukraine and are supportive of President Zelenskyy’s commitment to engage in diplomacy that leads to Russia stopping its attacks and withdrawing its forces. We are focused on putting Ukraine in the strongest possible negotiating position by continuing to provide security assistance to help Ukraine defend itself and by increasing pressure on Putin by imposing severe costs on Russia. We and our Allies and partners will continue to provide security assistance, humanitarian aid, and economic support to Ukraine. The United States and the international community will make Putin’s war of choice a long-term strategic failure for the Kremlin.

More Vaccinators To Return To Hospital System
TL Bureau, Melbourne Victoria’s army of COVID-19 vaccinators will start returning to the public hospital system, following an extraordinary year delivering more than 6.1 million doses through the country’s best performing state-run vaccination system. With the Commonwealth cutting funding for the COVID-19 response beyond September and more people getting vaccinated at GPs and pharmacies, Victoria’s network of vaccination centres will start to scale down. The move will free up a workforce of highly skilled professionals to deliver other services across our health system. By the end of May, approximately 30 state-run vaccination centres will remain in operation, with a focus on services in priority Local Government Areas and vulnerable communities. The Commonwealth’s COVID-19 vaccination program will also continue through GP clinics and pharmacies, which are now delivering up to 75 per cent of doses in the program – up from around 50 per cent during the Delta outbreak. While supporting the
Commonwealth’s COVID vaccination program was a critical priority in the race to vaccinate millions of Victorians in a short period of time, the time has come for workers to return to the public hospital system, which is still under pressure. With demand reducing now and most Victorians have had a third dose, immunisation programs have a natural home in primary care and that’s where the Commonwealth’s program will endure over the long term. The vaccination centre at the Alfred Hospital closed this week, having delivered more than 70,000 doses since it opened, while the high-volume centre at Cranbourne Turf Club will finish vaccinating Victorians in May. Victoria is one of the most vaccinated places in the world. More than 96 per cent of adults have had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and twothirds have had three doses – including around 90 per cent of those aged over 70. If you haven’t had your third dose, now’s the time to visit a state-run centre, GP or pharmacy to get protected ahead of winter. To book, visit covid-vaccine. healthdirect.gov.au.

Three people charged after £16m worth of crystal meth seized in Australia TL Bureau, Sydney This is a joint release between Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force, National Crime Authority (UK) and the Metropolitan Police (UK) Three UK nationals have been charged for their suspected involvement in smuggling 24 kilograms of crystal meth worth almost £16 million into Australia last year. A 52-year-old woman from Croydon, a 52-year-old man from Sevenoaks and a 51-yearold man from Orpington were arrested by officers in the UK on 13 April 2022 from the Organised Crime Partnership, a joint team of National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Officers. The woman, who works in the cargo sector, is accused of accepting a shipment filled with methamphetamine and failing to properly inspect it before it was marked as security cleared and sent to Australia. She is also alleged to have tracked the shipment as it travelled through the system. The 52-year-old man is believed to have travelled to the shipping centre in Croydon, UK on 26 June 2021 and paid for the shipment to be sent to Australia. The 51-year-old man is alleged to have arranged the contact between the other man and the woman to organise the shipment. Upon arrival in Australia in July 2021, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers selected the consignment for examination. A detailed examination revealed 24 plastic bags containing a crystalline substance. Presumptive testing of the substance indicated it was methamphetamine. The ABF subsequently referred the consignment to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation. All three people were charged with being concerned in the exportation of Class A drugs. The 51-year-old man was also charged with possession with
intent to supply a Class B drug and production of a Class B drug after a number of cannabis plants were found at his address. They will appear in Croydon Magistrates Court today 14 April 2022. Detective Inspector Guy Carmichael of the Organised Crime Partnership, said: “These drugs would be worth a significant amount in the UK, some £4 million, but their value in Australia would have been remarkably higher at £16 million, or just shy of $28 million Australian dollars. “Working closely with partners in Australia, including the Australian Federal Police, has seen a large quantity of these dangerous drugs taken off the streets and a suspected key supply chain taken out of action. “We will continue to target those who are supplying illegal drugs, whether within the UK or overseas.” AFP Detective Acting Inspector Brendon Basford said the information that identified the two suspects was the result of an investigation into an Australianbased organised crime syndicate alleged to be responsible for multiple importations of illicit drugs, and the shipment that is
the subject of these allegations has an estimated street value of just under AUD $28 million. “AFP investigators identified a person of interest in the UK tracking a shipment in a manner that we believed was suspicious, and passed on the information we had to the National Crime Authority via the AFP’s international liaison network,” he said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our partners have taken the initial information we provided and built a brief of evidence on criminal offences in the United Kingdom, having a tangible impact on the alleged suppliers to the enterprise seeking to exploit the Australian community.” ABF Commander Susan Drennan said the arrests demonstrated the agility of law enforcement partners globally to work collaboratively and share information to achieve a joint disruption outcome for all agencies. “This is a great example of the reach of our professional law enforcement relationships worldwide. Our tough action against criminals attempting to endanger the lives of those in our community does not stop at our borders,” Commander Drennan said.
Sydney man sentenced for importing 144 kilograms of cocaine TL Bureau , Sydney
A 45-year-old Sydney man has been sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment for importing approximately 144 kilograms of cocaine hidden in hydraulic cylinders. The man was arrested as part of a joint Australian Federal PoliceAustralian Border Force (ABF) investigation after 24 blocks of cocaine, worth an estimated $64.8 million, were found concealed in the pistons of two hydraulic cylinders in October 2020. The drugs were substituted with an inert substance and delivered to a warehouse in Botany, NSW where they were collected by the 45-year-
old man. Further information about Operation Tethys can be found at this link. He pled guilty in June 2021 to attempting to import a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs, contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth), and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border-controlled drugs, contrary to section 307.5 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). He was sentenced yesterday to 11 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of six years. Detective Superintendent Matthew Ciantar said the outcome was a warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade. “Australian law enforcement and
its partners are working tirelessly to combat organised crime and keep illicit drugs off our streets and out of our homes,” said Detective Superintendent Ciantar. “If you are involved in the supply or distribution of these dangerous substances, law enforcement will find you and the penalties are severe.” ABF Acting Commander Operations Queensland, Julie Pettrey, said the collaboration between the AFP and ABF was crucial in identifying and disrupting the flow of illegal imports. “Criminal networks try to evade detection, however, the ABF and our partner agencies work around the clock to stop breaches at our borders,” A/g Commander Pettrey said.

Geotech investigations to get underway for pumped hydro at Lake Onslow
TL Bureau, Wellington
Drilling is about to get underway for one of the key options of the NZ Battery Project geotechnical feasibility investigations, in what has the potential to be the largest hydro project in New Zealand, Minister of Energy and Resources Megan Woods has announced. “The geotechnical investigations starting at Lake Onslow tomorrow, and those being proposed for the coming months, will provide valuable insight into the regional geology and its suitability in supporting pumped hydro infrastructure, that, if constructed, has the potential to support a fully renewable electricity system and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity,” says Megan Woods. “The purpose of this geotechnical work is to get a good sense of what’s going on underground. That includes understanding things like rock strength, geological properties and features such as faults, landslides and shear zones, and the interactions between groundwater and surface water. “This first hole will be drilled to approximately 100 metres. Core samples will be taken and tested, and monitoring equipment will be installed to monitor things like groundwater flow over the long

As part of Whakahokinga Mai, the Afghanistan Departures Taskforce plays a key role in facilitating travel documentation, accommodation and flights for those eligible for assistance. term. “This work will help determine the best tunnel route and location for an underground powerhouse, and ultimately, give a better picture of the scheme’s technical feasibility and costs. These technical investigations will inform the broader Lake Onslow feasibility study that also considers the environmental, cultural, and social implications. “A pumped hydro scheme at Lake Onslow is one of the options being explored by the NZ Battery Project, which has been set up to explore possible solutions to the dry year shortage problem in a 100 per cent renewable electricity system. A dry year energy storage solution is key to removing our reliance on fossil fuels to generate electricity and will greatly help us reach our climate change targets.” “The work at the first site is expected to be completed in early May. If other resource consents and permissions are granted, there will be more work at other sites around the lake and the Teviot Valley area that is expected to be completed throughout the rest of this year. “At most sites, a mobile drilling rig will drill boreholes around to 50 or 100 metres deep and extract core samples for analysis. Test pits will be excavated to sample material near the surface and non-intrusive
geophysical surveys will also be undertaken. “Geotechnical work will take place on both private and public land such as road reserves. Any proposed work on private land will first be discussed with the landowners. “While all sites will be remediated, we’re also doing everything we can in the planning stage to ensure the impact on the environment from this work is low. For example, each potential site is examined by an independent ecologist, archaeologist and cultural values assessor and following their advice, we can avoid sensitive environments and make sure appropriate measures are in place to further avoid or minimise the impact on these values. The sites have also been selected to lessen any disruption to the local community. “I appreciate this work creates uncertainty for those in the area, and I want to thank the local community and mana whenua for their willingness to work with us while we are in the informationgathering phase,” Megan Woods said. The NZ Battery Project is also investigating the feasibility of other potential solutions to the dry year, including smaller pumped hydro schemes at other locations, other hydro-based options and alternative approaches such as bioenergy and hydrogen.
Afghanistan humanitarian mission sees more than 1500 people come to Aotearoa New Zealand
Government taking action to reverse environmental decline
TL Bureau, Wellington
The Environment Aotearoa 2022 report released today shows the Government’s plan to turn around decades of environmental decline and make New Zealand carbonneutral is more urgent than ever, Environment Minister David Parker said. “Our environment is at the heart of who we are as a country. It sustains our economy and is core to our identity as a people, but for too long we haven’t protected it and this report highlights the urgency of turning around the decline,” David Parker said. “While most of the data in this report pre-dates actions we have taken to reverse decades of environmental decline, it nevertheless underscores the necessity of our plans to clean up our environment for current and future generations. “The Government has work underway across water, climate, biodiversity and more that directly addresses many of the issues raised in today’s report.” In the most significant change to the management of freshwater since the 1991 Resource Management
Act, the Government’s Essential Freshwater reform package was put in place to address the degradation of the country’s lakes, rivers, wetlands and estuaries. “Having swimmable and drinkable water is a birth right of every New Zealander, that the Government is working to restore,” David Parker said. “We are focused on implementing real change as quickly as practicable. The freshwater reforms aim to make material improvements to water quality within five years and to restore our waterways to health within a generation.” The Government’s National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020 sets minimum national bottom lines across key measures of freshwater health. It lays out the pathway to restore our waterways in both urban and rural areas. Councils have until the end of 2024 to notify regional plans that implement the NPS-FM. The Jobs for Nature programme, which aims to boost nature-based jobs, training and environmental benefits while accelerating COVID-19 recovery, is making a strong impact. “With more than 7,000 jobs created
and more than 380 projects funded, progress so far is pleasing and includes over four million plants going into the ground and over 1,300 hectares of freshwater areas being restored,” David Parker said. “Through the creation of naturebased jobs we are creating enduring benefits for our freshwater and biodiversity, mitigating the impact of climate change, and protecting cultural values, like gathering kai.” Climate Change Minister James Shaw said the report emphasises the critical need for urgent climate action. “We need to see bold, enduring action to cut emissions right across Aotearoa. The actions taken by this Government have changed the trajectory of our emissions, but there is much more work to be done. “New Zealand’s emissions reduction plan, to be released next month, will provide a comprehensive suite of actions and initiatives to cut emissions across every part of Government and every sector of the economy. It will put Aotearoa on a pathway to net-zero. “The report casts the impacts of climate change into sharp relief.
Our glaciers are retreating, and areas of our coast are increasingly subject to rising sea-levels. New Zealand’s response to the climate impacts we cannot avoid will be addressed in our first National Adaptation Plan – a draft plan will be released for feedback soon. “A collective commitment to change is the only way we can build a low-carbon, equitable future, and to ensure the wellbeing of all New Zealanders and our environment for generations to come,” James Shaw said. Among the many serious concerns identified in the report is the fact that our rare ecosystems and indigenous species are under threat, including 94 percent of reptiles and nearly three-quarters of terrestrial birds at risk of becoming extinct. “The report paints a picture of a stark reality in which the time to take action on our environment and make sustainable longterm decisions is now – before irreversible damage is inflicted,” David Parker said. “This is the time to act, and we know what needs to be done. The Government is committed to leading the all-of-society response required.”
arrival to Aotearoa New Zealand. “This would not have been possible without the hard work of our people onshore and offshore, cooperation with the advocates involved and the great support from our partner countries who played an important role in helping us get our people safely from Afghanistan to New Zealand,” Nanaia Mahuta said. “It has nearly been six months since Operation Whakahokinga Mai was established and I am pleased we have managed to bring nearly 90 percent of those we set out to assist, to Aotearoa. This leaves less than 200 to be assisted from Afghanistan before the operation concludes. We encourage those final 200 to assess their situation and get in contact as soon as possible, before this opportunity closes. The dedicated Afghanistan Departures Taskforce will close on 29 April 2022. Support will continue to be provided by MFAT to the remaining New Zealand citizens, Permanent Residents and eligible visa-holders until 30 July 2022. From 30 July onward, assistance may be provided on a case by case basis to those with exceptional circumstances preventing them to travel before that date. Alongside efforts to assist citizens, permanent residents and Afghan visa holders, New Zealand has supported the Afghanistan people through $12 million in humanitarian aid.

IFC’s Green Bond to Itaú to Boost Climate-Smart Transportation in Brazil
TL Bureau, Sao Paulo
IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is providing a financing package of $200 million to Itaú Unibanco S.A. to support lending for the acquisition of climate-smart vehicles. The project aims to widen access to finance for the purchase of these vehicles in Brazil and help strengthen the climate finance market, mitigating climate impact and supporting economic recovery in the country. The investment entails both IFC’s and Itaú’s first green bond in the country. It consists of the subscription of green debt securities to be issued by Itaú in the form of Letras Financeiras (LFs), an exclusive debt security for local financial institutions. By supporting access to finance for climate-smart vehicles, the LFs will contribute to Brazil’s commitment to the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. IFC’s support will promote clean transportation financing to
influence the Brazilian banking sector to grow their credit portfolio in the climate-smart vehicle segment, contributing to Brazil’s long-term vision of a low-carbon future and the diversification of its transportation fleet. “The financing structure for this funding is innovative, and it also reinforces the ESG agenda of supporting clients’ climate transition,” says Daniel Goretti, Director of Treasury at Itaú Unibanco. “One of IFC’s strategic priority in Brazil is to support investments in climate-smart and modern technologies to mitigate climate impact. This project with Itaú will contribute to this effort by supporting local capital markets as a key source for catalyzing finance to climate-smart vehicles, while also better supporting Brazil’s economic recovery and building a more resilient and sustainable economy,” says Carlos Leiria Pinto, IFC’s Country Manager in Brazil.
The project is well aligned with the World Bank Group Climate Commitment, which requires that 85 percent of all IFC’s new operations to be aligned with the Paris agreement by 1 July 2023, and 100 percent by same date in 2025. Itaú and IFC have a long-standing relationship and the institutions have worked together in several projects over the years, including investments and advisory services focused on different products and segments, such as capital markets, gender finance, microfinance, and climate finance. In 2015, IFC provided $400 million to Itaú to finance renewable energy, water treatment, and energy efficiency projects in Brazil. IFC has invested in Brazil’s private sector since 1957 to address the country’s most critical development challenges, including urbanization, social inclusion, competitiveness and productivity, and management of natural resources.

FROM THE DESK OF Secretary Antony J. Blinken U.S. DEPARTMENT of STATE
TL Bureau, Washington D.C.
This week I visited Howard University to talk about how to deepen the educational ties between India and the United States. As I have come to learn throughout its history, Howard University has played an important role in building bonds between our countries. And really, it’s hard to overstate the importance of those bonds not just as we look back but, I believe, as we go forward. Let me tell you about one key figure from what has been already a very storied past. Howard Thurman, former dean of Rankin Chapel here at Howard. Going back to September of 1935, Thurman led a four-member delegation on what was a monthslong pilgrimage to India. He was trying to find lessons from the country’s independence movement that might be relevant to the racial justice movement in the United States. Near the end of the trip, Thurman met with Mahatma Gandhi. They talked, the books record, for about three hours, covering a wide range of issues: segregation, faith, nonviolent resistance. The conversation and the trip made a lasting impression on Thurman. So when he came back to Howard, he developed his interpretation of nonviolence – not as a political tactic, but as a spiritual lifestyle. He shared his
views with sermons, speeches, and eventually what came to be an incredibly influential book, Jesus and the Disinherited. Gandhi’s views and Thurman’s interpretation of those views – of nonviolence – would influence one of the greatest figures in our nation’s journey, Martin Luther King, Jr. As he traveled the country laying bare the sins of segregation, Dr. King carried two books with him. One was the Bible, the other – Jesus and the Disinherited. These connections and so many others across our shared history make clear that our people do share a special bond, and that as the world’s oldest and largest democracies, our countries always have something to learn from each other. That’s why we see our cultural and educational ties continue to grow every single year. We’re incredibly fortunate in the United States to have 200,000 Indians studying at our universities, enriching our campuses, enriching our fellow citizens. And we see many American students studying and working in India through programs like Fulbright, the Gilman fellowships, including some who are here today. To make it easier for people to continue learning from each other, Indian Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar and I announced yesterday the Working Group on Education and Skill Training, which will bring
academic institutions in the United States and India together to develop new joint research programs. The group will also focus on creating more opportunities for universities to partner on exchange programs that the Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield runs so that ultimately more of our people can learn alongside each other. I know the importance of building stronger bonds between U.S. and Indian higher education systems. Many students have benefited from studying in both countries. Students are using that knowledge now to teach in the United States and Indian respectively. That’s a very powerful thing. Students are developing recommendations on how India and the United States can support each other’s clean energy transitions. They are promoting trade between our countries and more equitable opportunities that flow from that trade. And that’s just to name a few examples of the things that people are working on. So in foreign policy, one of the things we talk a lot about is the importance, the strength, the imperative of people-to-people ties. We do a lot of work as diplomats between our countries, but ultimately what really matters are those bonds between our people – between students, between businessmen and women, between academics, between tourists and
others. This is what really brings us together. And when we’re talking about that, in effect we’re talking about students: those who do the daily work of sharing their perspectives, sharing their knowledge with each other, and in so doing, building what are really lifelong personal and professional relationships with one another. That’s what makes all the difference because these kinds of connections, the peopleto-people connections, many of them fostered by the exchange programs that we run, they actually build lifelong connections and a lifelong appreciation for each other’s countries, cultures, histories, and futures. And as a result, we are better able to take on shared challenges together.I believe firmly that the United States and India need continued collaboration, hard work, and leadership for the biggest challenges both countries face, whether it’s combating COVID, whether it’s building a more inclusive global economy, whether it’s tackling the climate crisis. To put it another way, the U.S.India Strategic Partnership, I am convinced, is absolutely crucial, essential, for addressing the problems of the 21st century, and the work of students at institutions like Howard University, is at the heart of that relationship.
Acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
TL Bureau, London
On 5 April 2022, WHO was notified of 10 cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in children under the age of 10 years, across central Scotland. By 8 April, 74 cases had been identified in the United Kingdom. Hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, E, and D where applicable) have been excluded after laboratory testing while further investigations are ongoing to understand the aetiology of these cases. Given the increase in cases reported over the past one month and enhanced case search activities, more cases are likely to be reported in the coming days. Description of cases: On 5 April 2022, the International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) for the United Kingdom notified WHO of 10 cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in previously healthy young children (age range: 11 months to five-yearold) across central Scotland. Of
these 10 cases, nine had onset of symptoms in March 2022 while one case had an onset of symptoms in January 2022. Symptoms included jaundice, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. All 10 cases were detected when hospitalised. As of 8 April 2022, further investigations across the United Kingdom have identified a total of 74 cases (including the 10 cases) fulfilling the case definition1. The clinical syndrome in identified cases is of acute hepatitis with markedly elevated liver enzymes, often with jaundice, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms, in children principally up to 10 years old. Some cases have required transfer to specialist children’s liver units and six children have undergone liver transplantation. As of 11 April, no death has been reported among these cases and one epidemiologically linked case has been detected. Laboratory testing has excluded hepatitis type A, B, C, and E viruses (and D where applicable) in these cases while Severe acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and/or adenovirus have been detected in several cases. The United Kingdom has recently observed an increase in adenovirus activity, which is cocirculating with SARS-CoV-2, though the role of these viruses in the pathogenesis (mechanism by which disease develops) is not yet clear. No other epidemiological risk factors have been identified to date, including recent international travel. Overall, the aetiology of the current hepatitis cases is still considered unknown and remains under active investigation. Laboratory testing for additional infections, chemicals and toxins is underway for the identified cases. Following the notification from the UK, less than five cases (confirmed or possible) have been reported in Ireland, further investigations into these are ongoing. Additionally, three confirmed cases of acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology have been reported in children (age range 22-month-old to 13-year-old) in
Spain. The national authorities are currently investigating these cases. Public health response Clinical and public health response has been implemented across the United Kingdom to coordinate case finding with investigation into the cause of illness in these cases. Further investigations by the national authorities are ongoing to include more detailed exposure history, toxicology testing, and additional virological/microbiological tests. Guidance has been issued to experts to support a thorough investigation of suspected cases. Further investigations and a clinical and public health response to the cases reported are also being undertaken in Ireland and Spain. WHO risk assessment The United Kingdom has reported a recent unexpected significant increase in cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in young children. Although the potential role of adenovirus and/or SARS-CoV-2 in the pathogenesis of these cases is one hypothesis, other
infectious and non-infectious factors need to be fully investigated to properly assess and manage the risk. As there is an on-going increasing trend in cases in the United Kingdom over the past month together with more extensive case searching, it is very likely that more cases will be detected before the aetiology has been found (either biological, chemical or other agent(s)) and corresponding appropriate control and prevention measures have been taken. WHO is closely monitoring the situation with other Member States and the United Kingdom and partners for cases with similar profiles. WHO advice Further work is required to identify cases both inside the United Kingdom and internationally. The priority is to determine the aetiology of these cases to guide further clinical and public health actions. Any epidemiological links between or among the cases might provide indications for tracking the source of illness.

On the Fence of Whether or Not To Move This Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Spring and Spring? By: Your Home Sold Guaranteed Realty Summer Celebrations Across England TL Bureau, London
TL Bureau, Santa Clara Ca
If someone is thinking of selling a house, it may be because they’ve heard prices are rising, listings are going fast, and sellers are getting multiple offers on their homes. But why are conditions so good for sellers today? And what can you expect when you move? To help answer both of those questions, let’s turn to the data. Today, there are far more buyers looking for homes than sellers listing their houses. Check the maps of the latest buyer and seller traffic from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) to help paint the picture of what this looks like: Notice how much darker the blues are on the left. This shows buyer traffic is strong today. In contrast, the much lighter blues on the right indicate weak or very weak seller traffic. In a nutshell, the demand for homes is significantly greater than what’s available to purchase. What It Means It’s an incredible advantage when you sell your house under these conditions. Since buyer demand is so high at a time when seller traffic is so low, there’s a good chance buyer will be competing for your house. According to NAR, in February, the average home sold got 4.8 offers. When buyers have to compete with one another like this, they’ll do everything they can to make their offer stand out. This could play to sellers’ favor and mean they will see
things like waived contingencies, offers over the asking price, earnest money deposits, and more. Selling when demand is high and supply is low sets you up for a big win. If someone is also looking to buy a house, They may be tempted to focus more on just the seller’s traffic map and wonder if it means they will have trouble finding the next home. But remember this: perspective is key. As Danielle Hale, Chief Economist at realtor. com, says: “The limited number of homes for sale is a lesson in perspective. This same stat that frustrates wouldbe homebuyers also means that today’s home sellers enjoy more limited competition than last year’s home sellers.” If we will look at the big picture,
the opportunity as a seller today is unprecedented. Last year was a hot sellers’ market. This year, inventory is even lower, and that means an even bigger opportunity. Even though finding the next home in a market with low inventory can be challenging, is that concern worth passing on some of the best conditions sellers have ever seen? As added peace of mind, remember real estate professionals have been juggling this imbalance of supply and demand for nearly two years, and they know how to help both buyers and sellers find success when they move. A skilled agent can help capitalize on the great opportunity someone have as a seller today and guides them through the buying process until they find the perfect place to call their next home.

MAGPIES MAKE LATE CHANGES UNDER THE LEAGUE’S COVID-19 CONTINGENCY FRAMEWORK TL Bureau, Brisbane
The Collingwood Magpies have selected Melbourne Vixens nominated athlete Gabby Coffey for tonight’s match against GIANTS Netball under the Suncorp Super Netball League’s COVID-19 Contingency Framework. The Magpies have also elevated nominated athletes Nyah Allen and Zoe Davies, and selected temporary replacement player Olivia Wilkinson (Peninsula Waves 19-and-under – Victorian Netball League). Collingwood’s Sophie Garbin, Gabrielle Sinclair, Molly Jovic and Geva Mentor have been ruled out of tonight’s Round 5 match through government COVID-19
health and safety protocols. The Magpies selected Coffey after exhausting their own list of nominated athletes and training partners – dependent on position (goalers, midcourt and defenders). Coffey has signed a temporary replacement player contract with Collingwood, following approval by the League and with support from the Vixens. IOC announces passing of IOC Member Alex Gilady
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is deeply saddened to learn of the death of IOC Member Alex Gilady at the age of 79. TL Bureau, Lausanne A pioneer of television at the Olympic Games, he was first a sports commentator (1968), then Head of Sports (1975), Special Operations (1977), Vice President (1981-1996) and Senior Vice President of NBC Sports, the longstanding Olympic RightsHolding Broadcaster in the United States of America. NBC’s initial Games broadcast was in Tokyo in 1964, the same year Mr Gilady started his career as a journalist in his home country of Israel. His contribution to Olympic broadcasting was recognised by the IOC with his appointment in 1984 to the Radio and Television Commission (in which he stayed until 2015), and 10 years later with his election as an IOC Member. IOC President Thomas Bach said: “With the passing of Alex Gilady we are losing a pioneer of the modern Olympic Movement, particularly in regard to broadcasting, but also far beyond that. He has always stood up for the Olympic values, often when sometimes the situation was not easy for him. “We all appreciated his open personality and his frank way of speaking even if we did not always agree, because with Alex we always knew that he was speaking from the heart. He was always a genuine person.” President Bach added: “In Alex I have lost a dear friend who advised, inspired and supported me in many respects. In fact, it was Alex who convinced me in 1996 to run for a seat on the Executive Board for the first time. Since then, he has always been at my side. Above all, he was a great man and a wonderful friend.”
Recently, as Vice-Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Mr Gilady established excellent relationships with some of the key members of the Organising Committee. This paved the way to finding solutions for the many issues that had to be addressed, particularly around the unprecedented postponement of the Games. In this role, he made full use of all his experience in the Coordination Commissions for the previous four Olympic Games – Athens 2004 (1998-2004), Beijing 2008 (2002-2008), London 2012 (2005-2012) and Rio 2016 (20102016) – and, since 2017, he was already deploying this as part of the Coordination Commission for Paris 2024. Mr Gilady was also a member of the Board of Directors of Olympic Channel Services S.L., Spain (20152022) and other IOC commissions, namely International Relations (2014-2015), Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport (2015-2022) and Communications (2015-2022). Following a playing career in second and third division football and basketball, he moved on to take up more roles in sports administration as Chairman of the Television Commission at
the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF, now World Athletics) between 1985 and 2008 (after which he retired and became Honorary Chairman for life), and Chairman of the TV Council at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) between 2004 and 2019. Educated at the Naval College, Mevo’ot Yam, Michmoret, in 2007 Mr Gilady was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy by Haifa University, also in Israel. The vast majority of his many awards, though, came from his work in television, in which he was also the founder, President and CEO of Keshet Broadcasting Ltd, a commercial television franchise in Israel, from 1993 to 1999. He took over the Presidency of Keshet Broadcasting again in 2005, a position he occupied until 2017. Mr Gilady was the recipient of seven Emmy Academy Awards for the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Salt Lake City 2002, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012; and an Award for Best Journalistic Story with the subject “The Sea” in 1970. He also won the highest Israeli Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Award for producing President Sadat’s first visit to Jerusalem in 1977; the “Man of the Year Award” for becoming the first Israeli to broadcast from Egypt, also in 1977; and an All Electronic Media Award for producing the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel in 1979. The IOC expresses its deepest sympathies to Alex Gilady’s family. As a mark of respect, the Olympic flag will be flown at half-mast at Olympic House in Lausanne for three days.
Sébastien Ogier when the country made its WRC debut one year ago. With the event not forming part
of Ogier’s programme of selected rallies for 2022, Esapekka Lappi again completes the TGR WRT line-up after finishing third on his comeback in Sweden. Fourth in Sweden was Takamoto Katsuta, who continues his full campaign with TGR WRT Next Generation on a rally he claimed two stage wins on in 2021. After the two winter rounds in Monte Carlo and Sweden, Croatia provides the first pure asphalt test for the new Rally1 cars. The event is based out of the capital city Zagreb with the stages taking place close to neighbouring Slovenia. The roads are characterised by a wide
variety of different asphalt types, meaning grip levels are constantly changing. Many sections are fast and flowing and include jumps and crests, while others are more technical and twisting. Following shakedown on Thursday morning and a ceremonial start in Zagreb in the evening, the rally begins on Friday with the longest leg of the event, consisting of two loops of four stages all familiar from the 2021 event. Much of Saturday takes place in similar territory just to the south-west of Zagreb, but there is also a longer trip towards the Adriatic coast near Rijeka for the new Platak stage.

Public Presented with More Alternatives for Rail Baltica Section from Kaunas to the Polish Border
TL Bureau , Vilnius
During the public meeting, four alternatives of the Rail Baltica railway section from Jiesia (Kaunas) to the LithuanianPolish border were presented to the public this week. The project organisers introduced the residents to the proposed alternatives and further project solutions. The organisers of Rail Baltica project — joint venture partners Sweco Lietuva UAB (responsible partner) and DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH — have planned four alternative routes for the Rail Baltica railway between Jiesia (Kaunas) and the Lithuanian and Polish border. Trains will be able to travel with the speed up to 249 km/h on this electrified Rail Baltica railway line. The aim is to be able to reach the main cities of the country, as well as airports and Vilnius and Kaunas railway stations, in the shortest possible time, and to facilitate fast and convenient international
connections (for example, from Kaunas to Warsaw or Riga). “Rail Baltica railway project is important for the economy, it will also increase public transport opportunities, significantly improve the military mobility of our country and the entire region and will contribute to the development of environmentally friendly transport. In order
to realise the full potential of European railways, we must not only maintain the high quality of the project (train speed, use of the latest technology) but also live up to public expectations, therefore, we call on the public to engage in the ongoing territory planning process and join the dialogue to find the best alternative,” said Loreta Maskaliovienė, Deputy Minister
of Transport and Communications. Four alternatives from Kaunas to the Polish border were selected following a strategic environmental impact assessment, which analysed not only environmental but also social and economic factors. The project promoters also carried out an evaluation of all alternatives according to the established criteria and a cost-benefit analysis. After analysing the results obtained and the proposals submitted by the project promoters, the two alternatives that best meet the objectives were deemed to be 3A and 6A. The Ministry of Transport and Communications is currently examining the proposals and questions submitted by the public, and the persons who have submitted inquiries will be provided with a reasoned explanation, with a written response provided within 10 business days from the day of the public debate. Upon completion of the publicity procedure, after answering the questions of the
residents and examining all the comments received, the optimal route alternative will be confirmed. Specific, publicly discussed communications infrastructure solutions will then be planned. Only after that, during the stage of approved solutions, specific plots of land will be formed, on which it is planned to build the Rail Baltica railway line. Owners and users on whose plots of land or neighbouring properties Rail Baltica section is planned to run will receive notifications by registered mail. This will also be announced in the media specified in the legislation. Back in 2015, Lithuania implemented the first stage of the Rail Baltica project, when a European-gauge railway line was built from the Polish-Lithuanian border to Kaunas. The total length of the Rail Baltica railway line in the Baltic States will reach 870 km: Lithuania — 392 km, Latvia — 265 km, Estonia — 213 km
